Quote: You Can’t Sulk, We have to Win
By Matthew Cerrone - Sep 27, 2008 10:08 am

The Mets play the Marlins today at 1 pm, while the Brewers take on the Cubs in Milwaukee at 4 pm.

The Phillies face the Nationals in DC at 4 pm.

The Brewers need to win, coupled with a loss from the Mets, to win the NL Wild Card today.

On the other hand, the Mets need a win to at least guarantee that their season continues in to tomorrow, regardless of what the Brewers do tonight.

The Phillies need just one win, either today or tomorrow, regardless of what the Mets do, to win their second-consecutive NL East Division Championship.

David Wright, on the next two games:

“It comes down to two must wins for us down the stretch and we have to get the job done…We had the opportunities, we controlled our own destiny and now we don’t, we need some help.  You can’t sulk on what could’ve been, you have to focus on these next two games, leave it all and hope for two wins…We have to win these two games…We dug ourself a hole, and now it’s up to us to dig ourself out of it.”

This is it, folks.  We’ve gone through six months of drama, six months of ups and downs and stress and excitement and belief and frustration, and now we get two more days of it, two more days to see how this all plays out.

In other words, the time for criticism is over, the time for would’ve, could’ve, should’ve is over, it’s all about right now, and all about a win.

Good luck, gentlemen.  I’ll see you on the other side.

I am really torn about this weekend. On one hand I want to see them make it to erase last years demons even though realistically they won’t advance past round 1. On the other hand I would like to see them get eliminated today so that the ceremonies tomorrow will be positive. The thought of this going into tomorrow and then having them break our hearts again with all that is going on with the Shea ceremonies would just be terrible but as all Mets fans know, pretty appropriate based on their history.

    • HOFMets57 says:

If they get eliminated today, the ceremonies tomorrow will NOT be pretty.

      • mextache says:

Agreed. Good riddance to this season, this team and this stadium.

Is anyone else sick and tired of hearing/reading these quotes from Wright? How about a big hit in a big spot ONCE this year David?

Not only is he playing like A-Rod in the big spot he’s starting to sound like him too.

        • ridethesnake says:

What is he suppose to say when asked a question?

And enough about the A-Rod comparisons. He is 25 years old, has never gone 1-25 in a huge series against Philly like A-Rod did against the Sox (and other similar series), and is paid 5x less.

If Wright was paid $22mil and didn’t have a monster September in 2007 (he finished the season with a 17 game hitting streak with 15 runs and 11 RBI, including an 11th inning GW hit with 7 games left while the pitching fell apart mostly to go 5-12), I’d have a problem with the pressing in the big spots more than I do.

        • Knuckles99 says:

Matt, I am going to the game today. I want to correct you on something, we do not have to win, the Mets have to win. I have to root. THEY MUST PLAY AWESOME! That is their job. Mine is to funnel money into the system, as my responsibility is to the U.S. as well.

  2. CleonJones says:

David Wright… walking, talking cliche machine. Not clutch with originality. Not clutch with runners on.

    • ridethesnake says:

He was clutch last September. Look it up.

      • mextache says:

I know about September 2007…Wright was great. But this year has been a different story. His numbers are great (tying Piazza in RBIs etc) but he hasn’t gotten the big hit when it mattered most. I don’t think that’s unfair to say.

Wright has been given the ‘franchise guy’ title so he needs to play like one when it counts most. Talk is cheap.

I know the guy wants to win maybe even more than we fans want them to win but actions speak louder than words.

By the way, I love the name ’snake’.

    • SPR says:

Yawn. I’m sick of these quotes. It’s a game. Play t well and satisfy your fans. That’s it.

      YOU BETTER WIN THIS AFTERNOON

      LET”S GO METS!

  3. HOFMets57 says:

David, for all intents and purposes, always seems to say the right thing. His demeanor and timing are always dead on.

I just wish I could say the same for his clutch hitting..

    • Nate W. says:

actually this quote applied more three days ago than right now. When they had a chance at controlling a playoff spot it would have been a good time to grasp the moment and have to win.

    • dulcetpine says:

true enough, but i know it is killing him. he wanted it so bad he started to press, and that is not a good formula for success.

oh well. i am already looking forward to next summer, but then again, i always look forward to summer….

  4. dulcetpine says:

i love the mets, but lets face it. the season is over pretty much. now all we have to do is look forward to the shea goodbye celebration. i am bummed once again they will not make the playoffs, but we all saw this coming.

the bullpen, and lack of clutch hits has been the teams demise. philly getting hot towards the end didn’t help, but lets face it, the mets lost 5-7, and that is establishing a september to forget trend, proving last year was not an anomaly but a matter of fact.

  5. atlantasnumber1metsfan says:

I don’t know about the rest of you, but last night was the first night I just felt some fatigue with this team…wake me up when it’s over cuz i’m just tired.

  6. Genesis Does says:

Win two and pray the cubs win one.

Stop the Wright bashing, please. The guy has had more than his share of magic moments for a 25 year old. He’ll re-adjust his swing next year and go back to the .330 hitter he was.

With a real bullpen, we run roughshot over the nl this year. We’ve overcome a ton of injuries to make it this far. We’ve experienced some exciting young rookies. Here’s hoping Shea has one last miracle in her, if not, there’s always next year.

If they do lose, however, I hope its today. Because I don’t want shea to go down with boos. I want to say goodbye in peace.

I won’t be posting any more for the regular season. See you all on the other side. Hopefully with a playoff spot clinched.

    -what Nintendon’t

  7. kjmcc0729 says:

Jeez, it is nice that Wright has realized now, on the verge of missing the playoffs, that they have to win games! Would have been more helpful if it dawned on him Wednesday night!

I don’t know if anyone else is tired of hearing this crap from wright or not, but I say just shut up and win a freaking ballgame!

  8. LarryFlint says:

HEY GUYSSSSSS IN TIMES LAST THIS QWE NEED A COLLECTIVIE REASONING OF WHY WE ARE HERE!!!!!!!!!! TO WIN@!!!! AND GET MAD HCIXKA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GO JERYR MANUEL! UR U BUT PEEPS THINK UR JERRRRRRRRY!

WHY WERWE HERE? TO COLLECTINVLY REASON THE METS TOO WIN

  9. JoeDinBuffalo says:

This year i rooted for a team that was forced to rely an outfielder who hasn’t played the game at the major league lever for 2 years. My team needed to start 2 rookies, who never regularly played the outfield until a month ago. My team saw 3 starters on their rotation and a the closer go down for lengths of time and have to rely on a rookie pitcher to be their ace for two months of the season. I watched a slugger come back and put the team on his back, and my center fielder be a leader.
My team has had odds thrown at them all year. I came to terms with the end of the season on Wed. and it wasn’t because of lack of heart, or the will to win. It was because I know they got much further than most teams would have under the same circumstances. I haven’t given up on the season yet, but if they do fail. I will appreciate what they have done.
    Thank you mets

    • LarryFlint says:

SOUNDS LIKE LAST MISIOSN FORM MY GAME!

    • mextache says:

Valid points all but the fact remains they had control of this thing in spite of all that which throws the excuses and accomplishments out the window.

Amazingly, they blew the division with 17 to play again and the Wild Card with 7 to play.

You’re a better person than I because in my eyes there’s nothing to thank this team for this year.

      • LIMetfan74 says:

I agree. Im going to the game tomorrow and if they blow it today I will not boo but I will not applaude them. Silence is golden!

    • RodKanehl says:

I’m glad that you appreciate CHOKING. Its entertaining in a very sad kind of way. Do really think your team is the only one that faced adversity this year? Get real, grow up, stop justifying bad GM and bad manager and bad interim and overpaid babies that don’t come to play whne the chips are down.

      • JoeDinBuffalo says:

No, they aren’t, but they also don’t deserve to be booed at every waking moment when they still have a chance. Some of us sound more and more like Phillie fans everyday.

        • NYP-BOS-NYP says:

Or Yankee fans. Look at us, calling the Yankees the best team money can buy, insulting their culture and their fans, with their sense of entitlement and expectations of dominance no matter what, because they paid for it, damn it!

Look in the mirror, people. We have become them.

I applaude your post, Joe D. You (and I now, I’m sure) will take a lot of crap from people for it, but you’re right, this team has come amazingly far considering what they had to work with.

I’ll be disappointed if things do not work out in our favor, but this anger being displayed here is completely misplaced. We are not “owed” a winning season by the Mets. The Mets do not owe us anything except to play as hard as they can, and anyone who thinks they’re not, anyone who says they don’t want to win or don’t care about losing or any of that nonsense is ridiculous and ought to go root for the Phils or the Yanks or anyone else.

These guys put their heart and soul into this game every day, and for a fan to claim that the fans care more about winning than the players do is (a) ridiculous, (b) not supported by any evidence whatsoever, and (c) arrogant as all hell.

I’m disappointed. I’m sad. But whatever happens, we got close — way closer than we have any right to expect, frankly.

These guys have plenty of heart. They just didn’t play consistently and get it done. Well… yet, anyway.

I, too, will not be hanging around in the game thread today, listening to the taunts of the trolls and the anrgy rants of the “entitled.” That makes the game even less fun to watch. But I’ll be supporting my team, win or lose. Because that’s what fans do.

          Let’s go Mets.

  10. LIMetfan74 says:

Can somebody other than Johan PLEASE step up today!
Go down fighting and not roll over like dogs again.

  11. erik says:

I’ll be disappointed if the Mets don’t make the post season, but lets’s be realistic; With the way things were going for the first 3 months, did anyone really believe they would be in this position? Most of us thought they would be in third place behind the Phils and Marlins at the best. The way they fought back to make a run at it was admirable. Yes, the BP caused a lot of heartache, but atleast now the team knows what they have to work on in the off season. And look at the players we have discovered: Murphy, Evans, A Reyes (for Def), Niese, and even Ayala has been a pretty decent surprise. Let’s not forget Wright is still 25 yrs old and still learning. Comparing him to A-Rod is unfair. A-Rod is a multy time MVP and one of the best players in the game. Him not being clutch is different fron Wright not being clutch. There’s more, but I’ve written too much already. I’m out.

    • LIMetfan74 says:

I like Murphy but Evans and Reyes are not everyday players.

      • erik says:

I didn’t say they were all starters, but as of today I’d rather have Evans over Marlon and Endy hasn’t exactly lit it up either and who knows Easley’s status for next season.

  12. mdemaio says:

Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!

    • RodKanehl says:

The Germans bombed Pearl Harbor… Wow…. Where did you flunk out of elementary school? So much for George Bush’s No student left behind. He obviously left you behind.

      • backinbusiness says:

        Oy…check your pop culture dude

        • JoeDinBuffalo says:

These kids never saw animal house? wow.

        • backinbusiness says:

i is hard to believe that anyone on a sports blog (1) never saw the movie; (2) doesnt know the reference regardless!

        • JoeDinBuffalo says:

Aron Heilman: War’s over, man. Marlins dropped the big one.
David Wright: Over? Did you say “over”? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!
          Brian Schneider: Germans?
Jerry Manuel: Forget it, he’s rolling.
David Wright: And it ain’t over now. ‘Cause when the goin’ gets tough…
          [thinks hard]
David Wright: the tough get goin’! Who’s with me? Let’s go!
          Jose Reyes: Que?

    • nastyslider says:

the Japs bombed pearl harbor you idiot!

      • mdemaio says:

Easy, my friend…it’s a reference to a John Belushi line in Animal House…lots of tension in here…jeez…

        • TugTheMan says:

I can’t believe that there are people in this world that have not seen Animal House, one of the best comedies ever made!!!! And I’m just as surprised just how many people are so quick to call others names, wow.

        • JoeDinBuffalo says:

Do you know where I can find 10,000 marbles?

  13. chokeartistmets2 says:

    YOUR SEASON IS POOP

  14. backinbusiness says:

OK, not that it matters, but the philths play in Philthy, not DC.

Also, this is not true: On the other hand, the Mets need a win to at least guarantee that their season continues in to tomorrow, regardless of what the Brewers do tonight.

If the Mets and Brewers BOTH lose tonight, they go into tomorrow Mets 88 Brews 89. Mets can tie it for the one game playoff tomorrow if they win and Brew Crew loses.

  15. backinbusiness says:

    WOW

    Reyes, ss
    Beltran, cf
    Delgado, 1b
    Wright, 3b
    Murphy, lf
    Martinez, 2b
    Church, rf
    Castro, c
    Santana, lhp

    SHAKE. UP.

  16. biomarco5 says:

I’ve watched both the mets and the brewers games the last few days. True mets fans havn’t had much to cheer about, but the brewers fans are putting us to shame. making it look like amateur hour down at shea.

Despite all the fears of a collapse etc, could we please get behind our team and our ACE TODAY!!!!!, regardless of outcome, for just two more games enjoy having baseball.

The only thing more aggravating then losing, is how our fans act like we are already beat.

LETS GO METS! LETS GO METS

    • FlightFromHouston says:

      torture

    • patrick says:

      I will tell you this.

I am behind Johan today whether he throws a perfect game or total egg at least he knows where it all hangs and demanded it.

      • biomarco5 says:

        10th MAN!…10th MAN!

Lets knock the marlins on their arse, come into our house and act like their going to end our season. F-them. Let out team know we’re all in this together

  17. Genesis Does says:

    Holy **** nice lineup

  18. EliPorter says:

    weatherman?

  19. patrick says:

He waits until the writing is on the wall to change the lineup.

I had grown to like Jerry but this just smells of total desperation.

  20. rogasm says:

Whatever happens in the next day or two, major changes need to be made to this team and organization, beginning at the top. Omar should be gone, regardless. He has failed to address major issues with this team the last two seasons as evidenced by rookies Humber and Niese getting important starts in penant races in 07 and 08 respectively as well as Lawrence in 07 and Rincon this year getting a crack at pitching. I was a big supporter of Omar, but the way this season has shaped up and what it has come to there are major cracks. Although I want Omar gone, I will still be rooting on my team.

In any event, LETS GO METS!

    • biomarco5 says:

can we worry about next year, hopefully in november.

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

Omar relies way too much on finding diamonds in the rough with scrap heap guys. tatis worked out VERY WELL, but like we’ve said before you cant rely on guys like that.

    • patrick says:

Just for some context, Niese did what Santana, Pedro, Perez and Pelfrey could not in the final 6 games against the Braves, he beat them and totally shut them down.

I am not going to dispute that Minaya put himself in a bad situation with personal choices, but just be careful what you wish for.

The Next Al Harazin, Steve Philips or Jim Duquette are right around the corner.

      • rogasm says:

I agree with you. However, Steve Phillips and Al got this team to WS births, and a championship. Just saying (I am in no waying saying they are better than Omar.)

  21. EliPorter says:

    oh the pain

  22. bkfitz says:

    RIP
    “Ya Gotta Believe”
    1973-2008

  23. nastyslider says:

has anyone else thought about signing Milton Bradley next season? I think he’d be a good pickup

  24. backinbusiness says:

OK guys, I don’t know about you, but I’m heading to Shea for the last time and I’m going to cheer my head off like never before.

I grew up at Shea, I think we all did to some degree. I just dug out a picture of me and my grandfather, who has since pa-s-s-ed (NOW THIS IS ABSURD!) away, in the upper deck, the back says June 1987. Gonna bring that with me.

The Mets can be a tremendous disappointment, but just for today, I’m going to go cheer for 26 years of memories at Shea and try my very best to will my team to victory as the 10th (wo)man.

I hope some of you do, too. We’re still in this, believe it or not.

    LETS GO METS

  25. khmustache says:

well, i once watched this team win a world series after coming within 1 strike of losing twice….it’s not impossible, just highly unlikely……..nobody ever said being a mets fan was easy…

  26. mcjiggles says:

    Let’s go Mets!

  27. JoeDinBuffalo says:

    LETS GO METS!

  28. metsluc says:

IT COMES DOWN TO TODAY .. METS LOSE BREWERS WIN..WERE OUT.. WHAT HAPPENED TO YA GOTTA BELIEVE?? LETS GO METS! enough with the negativity .. santana begged to pitch today…we gotta get behind him and the team .. LIKE I SAID.. LETS GO METS!

  29. biomarco5 says:

Does anyone else despise the way the Marlins and Phillies act when they come to NYC. Almost, like they hate not only Mets but the NY people as well.

    • khmustache says:

in all honesty i would be p**sed if i was a marlins fan….they don’t show up for 3 months of the season (minus a stretch in late august) and now they are playing like it’s the 7th game of the world series. where was this intensity all season? i really hate that team, bunch of punks and crybabies….that being said, at least they show up in late september….

  30. wright5murph28 says:

I hate the fact that the phillies rise to the occasion in september…and the mets go into a free fall….

  31. imtiredofguiseppefranco says:

dont lose hope people, i know yesturdays game was terrible, but i still believe this team will wind up tying the brewers for the wild card and playing a game on monday, unless the phillies choke and we win the division, but we all know that is not going to happen

    LETS GO METS!!!!!!!!!!!

  32. Knuckles99 says:

I am going today, if they need a reliever I will be behind home plate with my heart on the field. Fool me once baby! I am a fool for these sloppy meat sticks.

  33. imtiredofguiseppefranco says:

btw is this game going to happen, im outside of ny?

  34. Darth Manuel says:

There is no reason we should continue on the same path with this current configuration of talent. I do not want to see David Wright Jose Reyes or Carlos Beltran all wearing the same Jersey next season. One of them needs to go! They have let this city down. Trade David Wright to Kansas City where the pressure isn’t so paralyzing. He is no leader! I’m tired of his Sissy attitude. No one respects him or Jose. They laugh at them and at us. We have become a joke. We are a joke.

Omar Minaya might understand how to collect talent but he surly doesn’t know the first thing about leadership. Not one person on that team stood up in that dugout and tried to rally the troops.. Everyone was all nestled away in their Jackets with a sad look on their face.

Omar should really be careful in the next year or so.. He is close to driving Mets fans away from this franchise. You can’t invest emotion and dollars into a team like this. They are Chumps..

    • blains2008 says:

Um…then who plays 3b, ss or cf? Is this where you wave your magic wand and get whomever you want for your fantasy team?

Those are the exactly the three who should NOT go anywhere.

  35. Darth Manuel says:

Another thing… Cubs don’t want to play the Mets in the playoffs so look for them to get swept by the Brew Crew.. They want the Dodgers..

  36. MetsFan4Decades says:

Does anyone else thing throwing Santana today and the lineup shakeup smacks of desperation? Not that I’m not agreeing with all the moves, just saying.

Man, talking about having your collective backs up against a wall.

In any event, I’ll be rooting them on today.

    • NYP-BOS-NYP says:

Of course it’s desperation. Aren’t you feeling desperate? I know I am, and Jerry and the team sure as hell are.

I like the idea of shaking up the lineup. This team usually responds well to shakeups. Anyway, what could it hurt?

And Johan — now there’s a guy stepping up for his team. There’s a leader. Win or lose today, he was worth every penny.

  37. TugTheMan says:

    we could have only wished
