News: Rain delay
By Ted Berg - Sep 28, 2008 1:10 pm

The start of today’s game will be delayed by rain. The Mets have not set a target start time.

It’s only drizzling in Shea Stadium right now and the sun is out, but there are puddles on the warning track.

…updated at 1:16 pm…

The Mets announced that they’re aiming for a 2:00 pm start. The grounds crew is pulling the tarp off the field as we speak, and the PA announcer is asking fans to cheer for “the hardest working grounds crew in baseball.”

Where would the playoff game be tomorrow?

  6. jimyager says:

Lets NOT forget last year and that bitter taste after the first inning and Glavine blowing the game before we took an at bat. Revenge is a dish best served cold and its very cold when it rains at Shea. FILLET THE FISH !!! Let them watch as we celebrate winning the WC as they look on. OLLIE IS THE MAN !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m really trying to go into this game with a positive attitude, but I am a little worried about the weather…

…they’re saying that the game will likely be interrupted by occasional showers today; if that happens, both teams will have to go to their bullpens early, particularly if the delay lasts longer than 10-20 minutes.

I don’t need to explain why this works against the Mets…

    LET’S GO METS!!

    is anybody else’s tbs out?

  12. cheapseats says:

Can we please get mike piazza in that booth with those guys on a regular basis. He is awesome and so smooth in there.

  13. metsflip says:

If it is going to start at 2, we could see a champagne/celebratory scene

  14. believe17 says:

I’m glad for the delay. Now the Mets and Brewers can have closer start time. If everything goes our way, the Mets can celebrate after the last pitch, instead of waiting for the end of the Brewers-Cubs game.

    Lets drown these lil fishies

  20. Jmiles says:

I’m watching the game and isn’t it so appropriate that the bullpen would blow this season up.Scott Schoenweiss needs to dissapear out of NY even if we have to pay another team to take him

    • Xavier22 says:

Why Jerry didn’t immediately pull Schoenweis once the RH hitter was announced is a mystery.

Second season in a row the bullpen has failed the Mets. Omar did NOTHING to address the bullpen last offseason, perhaps this time he’ll get the message? We can only hope.

Way to earn that 4 year extension Omar - yeah yeah, I know. Santana. Fair enough, that’s worth 2 years. He still has another 2 to account for.

      • Johan The Ace says:

he cant he has to throw 1 pitch

        • Xavier22 says:

in that case, issue a 4 pitch walk.

Eh, whatever. It’s all academic now.

While I don’t think Jerry should get fired for this, if the front office chooses to revamp the entire coaching staff I wouldn’t complain.

Bullpen should be completely gutted, with the possible exceptions of Joe Smith and Bobby Parnell.

    UPDATE

    5:13

    omar minaya fired

  22. fulltilt720 says:

    i’m going to kill myself.

  23. tical1334 says:

i hate minaya. I hate the bullpen. i hate being a mets fan. i just hate this whole f-ing team. when i have kids there is no way im subjecting them to the misery of rooting for this garbage.

  24. Prismo says:

I demand my money for playoff tickets be handed back to me IMMEDIATELY.

And I want it fu**ing doubled.

The Wilpons should pay Mets fans for what we had to endure these past 2 seasons.

  25. steve333 says:

Yet another season ending gutless performance by the Mets.

They should all be ashamed of themselves.

Wilpon is an idiot and Omar is inept, but the players need to all look themselves in the mirror and ask if they see a man staring back at them or a boy.
Except Santana, who is a stud, the entire team lacks guts and courage.

We would have been better off if the team has just stunk the entire season so maybe Wilpon would have had the balls to just fire everyone involved-Minaya, Bernazard, Manuel, etc.
Now, we are stuck with 4 more years of mediocrity.
    Pathetic.

    • dominick718 says:

your blaming the players for what is a deeply flawed team

david wright is not gutless or a boy even if he doesnt come through everytime as the savior

flawed team, fan base that got swept up in hype and marketing the fact is the mets on paper are not even better than the marins it really is that simple.

i mean if i told u at beginning of season ayala would be closer you would have laughed

  26. calling all toasters says:

The big change they need: play the regulars all game, every single game, no more of this 159-and-out crap. Also, every relief pitcher should appear in every game, because of the clever strategy that would display. Who is the manager who can make this happen? Mister, we could use a man like Leo Durocher today. Willie and Jerry didn’t grind these teams down enough! They actually won some games in September!

  27. ManicMessiah says:

Honestly, it’s a pain, but I’m already kind of over it. I won’t be watching the postseason, but last year hurt way more.

Listening to Manuel makes me feel better. I want him back. We need CC AND K-Rod.

This s@cks. Let’s go mets next year.

  28. metsdude13 says:

I’m gonna get killed for this but, really , could you imagine a better ending for Shea Stadium?

Anything else would have been too good.

  29. Maineiac says:

    Where’s the post game Matt?

  30. dominick718 says:

i agree actually a crucial error letting shoenweis pitch in that spot

i would have liked to see the stupid look on heilams face one last time though

  31. curiojeff says:

Wow. So few postings. Has everyone’s interest in the Mets evaporated with the season? I thought I’d be one of a thousand posters. Hmmm.

I’m as disappointed as anyone, and, yes, the bullpen is awful. But, as shaky as he could be at times, you have to figure that if Wagner had stayed healthy, that the net result would’ve been at least 2 or 3 more W’s. So many other guys went DL during the course of the year, too — Tatis, Maine, Church, Castro, Easley, Pedro. A tough year that (all too ironically, again) came down to the last game of the year. Our guys just weren’t good enough (or at least not enough good guys are our guys).

There’s a lot of talk about “heart” and “guts” and I often think that’s just fan-BS. But the Brewers stepped up today with as much on the line as the Mets and came from behind to win. We, on the other hand, walked in a run and never got a runner into scoring position until the 8th. Against a pitcher we’ve hit very well in the past (.315 team avg. before today).

I think we’ve turned into the 1940’s-50s-era Brooklyn Dodgers, whose fans were left with little each fall but “Wait ’til next year.”

Speaking of next year — anyone who thinks Wright is going anywhere is high. Have you seen all those #5 jerseys in the stands? How the Mets put him out front as their media face?

Ollie Perez… tough call. This last game didn’t help his popularity.

Delgado… has earned a return; even at a year older.

    Murphy… 2009 everyday 2nd baseman.

Pedro… gone. It’s been fun. Alou & Castillo… see ya. Even if its via an expensive one-way ticket out of town. Schoenweiss, Heilman, Ayala, Feliciano will all be gone, too.

K-rod… start shopping for a nice upper West side apt. After the way the big investment in Santana worked out, and the epic collapse of the bullpen, the Mets will open the vault again, this time to replace Wagner with a marquis closer.

Jerry Manuel will be back and should be. And it’s not Minaya’s fault. He’s brought in some great talent. Right now there are 20-some other teams whose fans are also calling for their GMs head on a stick.

Oh, well… it’s been fun. See ya next year. Good job, Matt & crew.

  32. 4eyeJoe says:

repeat of last year…….congrats to the Brew Crew and the Phillies.

it was fun, tough, and depressing following the mets this year. i was able to follow almost 159 games this year either by tv or radio.

tough loss and really frustrating game today……the top of the eighth inning summed up the season in a nut shell. god, i wish i was wrong on Friday night when i said that the mets would end up winning Saturday’s game and lose Sunday’s game especially if Oliver Perez was going to pitch.

props to my other fellow mets fans who were at shea and continued to cheer the mets to the bitter end.

  33. steve333 says:

    Its not Minaya’s fault!?
The bullpen and 2nd base is not his fault? The shaky starting rotation is not his fault?
    Are ya kidding me?

  34. docgoodens8ball says:

Ceremony is on WFAN.com if you want to listen. It’s better than nothing.

  35. Eric1285 says:

Anyone see Reyes in the dugout right after the game? He didn’t even look bothered. Wright only looked mildly upset. I guess they kind of expected it.
