postGame: Marlins 4 Mets 2
By Mike Nichols - Sep 28, 2008 5:36 pm

The Mets lost the to the Marlins by the scores of 4 to 2 today in Shea Stadium.

For a recap, boxscore and stats, check out SNY.tv.

With the Mets loss and the Brewers win, the Mets have been eliminated from the playoffs.

They say baseball is a game of symmetry, and today the game was full of it.

In 2006 with Oliver Perez on the mound, Endy Chavez made a heroic catch, but the Mets lost by two runs to the Cardinals in the National League Championship Series.

Fast forward to today, with Perez on the mound, Chavez made another terrific catch to keep the game tied.

And, just as they did in 2007, the Marlins eliminated the Mets from the postseason on the final day of the season for the second straight year.

Unfortunately, the Mets were unable to duplicate a comeback as the 1986 Mets did.

I know many will put this loss on the bullpen and the matchups Jerry Manuel played, but once again the team’s most important players were unable to provide a clutch after the sixth inning.

Sorry, Shea, you deserved better. We’ll miss you.

    Well that was fun…

How fitting. We lose in the heart-wrenching manner we did…

    • jectalo says:

Bullpen and choking at the plate does them in for the last time in ‘08 and the last time at shea. What a waste of our time.

Thanks for letting us all down guys.

      • wrightstuff21 says:

That was the perfect replay of all year i mean we have no offense and the bullpen blows it. It happens every game

      • dwright5_godsend says:

You know, to blame this season on the offense is pure bull. The bullpen is the SOLE reason why we aren’t playing anymore. That’s it. Period. 30 blown saves? Really? We have 16 blown saves in the second half, while the Phillies had 15 ALL SEASON. That’s why we aren’t in the post season. Everything else on this team is fine. We score 5-6 runs a game, scored first almost 60% of the time, and took countless leads into the 7th and 8th only to lose them. This team has heart. They fought through a load of adversity and doubt only to fight back. I’m disappointed, but there is plenty of room for optimism next season. Last season we needed starting pitching, this season we need a bullpen. I have full confidence in Omar to get the job done, just as he has so far. We need to completely gut the bullpen, leaving Smith, Ayala, Stokes, and maybe Scho as a lefty. K-Rod is available, as is Burnett, so this offseason will be interesting. Its a long way til April, but the pain will subside and Citi Field will open with new hopes and dreams next season.

          Several comments
          1. Agreed the bulpen was horrendous. That should have wholesale changes.
          2. It is time Reyes and DW ( and I really like DW) step up and claim leadership roles.
          3. I would not give Jerry Manuel more than two years in a contract.
          4. Matchup trading partners who have bullpen help in excess – Twins who are contenders maybe, after tuesday we will know. The Twins have an excess of relief pitchers in the majors and minors. I posted it before but will do it again. The Twins could trade Jesse Crain and Mike Cuddyer . They both would fit a need for the Mets. Crain could possibly close or be a setup. Cuddyer could play infield or outfield.. The Twins are always looking for minor league talent, that was how they were built and are maintained
          5. Delgado needs to be resigned.
          6. I hope they don’t but, I could see either Beltran, Reyes, or DW being shipped out
          7. I would not be shocked to see Manny and or K-Rod being signed. OMar loves Manny!!!

        • LIMetfan74 says:

There is NO SHOT of Beltran,Wright or Reyes being traded!

        • Parvis says:

Beltran,DW,Reyes ..arent going anywhere…they had really good seasons..”Yes we’d love them to hit 50 HRS and bat 500 but thats not going to happen….I too get ticked at DW but dam look at his ending numbers!!! What else can he do?

I agree with above…And there are plenty of reasons to believe in 09′…The Mets did show heart this season…

30 blown Saves is what lost the season..the division was decided by 3 games,You do the math!!!!

Oh another thing “Beltran Haters” Leave 4ever your worthless pieces on Dookie….That guy is worth every penny…

        • stewart0329 says:

It is time for either David Wright or Jose Reyes to be traded along with Heilman, Duaner Sanchez and Schowenwies. And Omar should NOT be given a FOUR Year extension. Are you kidding giving this guy a four year extension for WHAT? giving Moises Alou a contract for giving Louis Costillo a FOUR year contract for giving Duaner Sanchez a one year extension after he decided he needed to eat Dominican Food at 2 AM and screwing up his shoulder. WHAT IN THE HELL was he thinking how many games did Sanchez blow since he has been back? He should have be reprimanded and traded as soon as he was healthy.

          Lets see

2 out of 3 to Atlanta
2 out of 4 to Washington
2 out of 3 to the Marlins (AT HOME)

where in the HELL was the offense!!!

I can’t wait for the PR to come out to sell tickets at the new stadium come and buy tickets at thousands of dollars and watch the Mets FOLD LIKE A CHEAP SUIT!!

  2. 7-train says:

Fitting that Lidstrom closed it out.

  3. EliPorter says:

    burn shea to the ground….

  4. PhysEdFred says:

Jerry finally got what he deserves… A knife in his back.

  5. SantanaCYYOung says:

so what was so different about this year’s team than last

anybody see the number after there were 17 left to play?

anybody see wright or reyes get a big hit when it counted?

    anybody see a comeback?

how do you leave showenweis in there?

how can u only muster 5 runs in 3 games?

how are the marlins more pumped up for this game than the Mets are?

This team $UCKS when it counts the most

  6. Johan The Ace says:

How dumb is this franchise, ceremony after the season ends in dissappointment

  7. stillbelieve says:

the gangstas really did well today.

  8. ccmetfan says:

Looking foward to 2009. Lets Go Mets. It’s time to stop being so negative since it only makes us feel worse. I’m sure there will be many changes in bullpen this off season. Lets hope for the best.

  9. Maineiac says:

    Deja Vu

  10. metsfan42793 says:

This is why the Mets are the laughing stock of major league baseball. They have a bullpen who has to give up a run before getting any outs and star players who can’t hit in the clutch.

  11. mrmustseetv says:

Where’s Cerrone to put his usual Mets/SNY-sponsored spin on this?

I love it how Cerrone and Nichols don’t understand how we boo these bums. Maybe now you do!

    1. Wright hit the softest .300 in baseball history. Never getting the big hit when it was needed.

    2. The Mets needs to find a true leadoff hitter and move Reyes to #2 or #3. You know a leadoff hitter. Someone who walks and gets on base.

    3. Ollie, Schoeneweis, Ayala, Heilman, Marlon, Alou, El Duque and Pedro should never be allowed to step foot at Shea.

    4. If the Mets charge fans for tickets for Opening Day, then are truly jerk-ffs!

Let’s hear your spin guys. Let’s hear it.

    BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO THESE F’N GUYS!

    AND NOW YOU KNOW WHY!

    • The .500 Club says:

I think Ayala and Ollie are both good players. Reyes has the 3rd highest OBP as a leadoff hitter in the league. Why would they not charge for opening day tickets? What about last year with Wright?

I am completely heart broken, but that doesn’t mean we need to go insane…

      • mrmustseetv says:

Yeah, Ayala is useful. I especially enjoyed watching him serve up that gopher when he needs to stop the bleeding.

And I’m still waiting for Cerrone to justify this with his SNY spin.

        Let’s here it Matt!

“Oh shucks. I’m disappointed as you guys are. It’s tough. Blah blah blah.”

    • chronique1 says:

Although I don’t like the negative sentiment, your number 2 point is worth looking at. I think Jose (although having crazy amounts of hits) is turning into a different type of hitter.

    • Nordberg says:

Well, with this being the last day of shea i think its a good bet no one will be allowed to step foot in shea again.

When you return for La La land let us all know.

  12. Wayneoo says:

Bent over and took it AGAIN.

  13. das320 says:

well I won’t miss the heartbreak Shea has given me over the past 3 years

maybe next year this team will not stink up S-hi-tt-yField

  14. Maineiac says:

But don’t worry guys Citi Field is opening next year!

  15. docgoodens8ball says:

Oliver Perez was not on the mound when Chavez made that catch, nor the catch against the Cardinals.

Thanks for another abysmal choke job Mets. God forbid these guys get some balls and go out and win a game when they have to. Only guy that seemed to be ready to play today was beltran. Without Santana it probably would have been over yesterday.

This team needs a major overhaul. Get rid of everybody in that bullpen, and I mean EVERYBODY! (excpet maybe Joe Smith).

To say that none of them were thinking about last year is completely outrageous. They were all thinking about last year, how could you not? Somebody check Church for another concussion. Guy was terrible down the stretch.

    • Gary Busey says:

Perez was on the mound for Endy’s 2006 NLCS catch. He fist pumped.

    • lil pelf says:

      yeah he was

    • wrightstuff08 says:

“Somebody check Church for another concussion. Guy was terrible down the stretch.”

For anyone to expect anymore than what we got from Church is delirious. He is an average player and that is it. One look at his stats shows that he was right around his career norms (concussion or not). He is a role player and not an everyday player who pitchers have figured out. But the offense overall isnt that good as it has very few contact hitters and a bunch of very streaky power hitters. The bullpen is trash and needs to be blown up. Add Lowe and Ollie as starters next year and at least they will have a rotation but that is about all. Omar really better come through in the off season or his head will be on the chopping block too.

      • Nordberg says:

Did you happen to notice Church’s stats before he got hurt? He was the Mets best player and it really looked like he turned a corner on his career. If he hadn’t gotten hurt, who knows, this could have been his breakout year.

  16. NyM410 says:

Thanks to Johan Santana and Carlos Beltran for being men and keeping this team in it for as long as they could…

Another brutal loss. Maybe these last two Septembers can be buried with Shea? Maybe not…

  17. Metskin says:

I want a real gangsta on this team. Somebody like Cody Ross or Shane Victorino. A SPARK PLUG! Somebody who a) speaks English and b) who won’t put up with other teams talking smack about them. I don’t want to hear the company line anymore and at this point I don’t care if David Wright ever plays another game.

    • Gary Busey says:

Translation: I want a whiny white guy.

    • Parvis says:

Only spark plug you need is one where you poor gas all over your face then go by a lit stove you gutless coward!!!!

Yea maybe they should trade or get rid of a guy who hit 300,33hr and tied the franchise leader in RBI’s…..

Good move, next year do us all a favor and become a Marlin Fan, b/c Fish is what your Wreak of you whiny B*I*T*C*H

  18. Prismo says:

    Hey Mike,
Is there any chance you can edit your post to include some typos and statistical mistakes?

I could really use something to complain about right now that isn’t related to the Mets screwing up.

  19. dominicanboy08 says:

we need to sign manny, k-rod,fuentes and burnett.

    • BBmetsfreak36 says:

      lmao….nooooooo chance learn baseball haha
theyre all type A free agents and u can only sign too…even if not so totally ruins your draft picks for next year…and even w/ all of our expireing contracts we couldnt afford them…burnett might even take the option or arbitration for the blue jays

    • XbLaDe31 says:

I have to ask because thats twice now in the post to sign Burnett who i believe is not a free agent he can become one but i did just read an article that the Jays are trying to throw more money on top of his current contract so i dont really know if thats going to happen…..

  20. MetsFan4Decades says:

I am so damn disappointed and totally pissed off.

But I’ll be back next year. – for the 41st year. I’m thinking most of you will too. Those that truly can’t handle it, you really don’t want to be a Mets fan. Time to pick another team.

2009 here we come. Sore losers, don’t torture yourself.

Memo to Omar: Get a damn BP!

    • The .500 Club says:

This is the Mets. Who wasn’t expecting this?

      • MetsFan4Decades says:

Like I said, 40 years following this team. I don’t predict anything with this team, and only hope for the best. Most times, that hope has been dashed, but I’ve watched a few great seasons. ‘69 was great, 86 was flat out fun. 2006 I thought we were going all the way….

  21. Mets Fan on Wall St. says:

Jesus, I just made a well thought out, heartfelt post and it got snagged in the comments filter. #@!$^ it, see you in 2009.

  22. EliPorter says:

    so sad

  23. rockets212 says:

so who is omar going to bring in this offseason who we think will save us. It better we someone who is tough and will get the big hit in september, not in may?

  24. MetsCoughitUp says:

This organization needs a major, and I mean MAJOR overhaul both on the field and in the front office. The overall culture needs to be changed as for the second year in a row this team showed a propensity to choke it all away (3 years if you count game 7 of the NLCS in 2006).

And ownership has the audacity to give Omar 4 more years when the season was not over for a team he put together.

The audacity of this front office is amazing. It is like they were saying to the fans “We don’t care that we put together two straight seasons of choking artistry, we are bringing back the guy who put it together, and we are doing it with a few games left.”

Opening day in CitiField is going to a bitter sweet event.

Maybe when they blow Shea up, they can blow up the bad karma that went along with it.

    • MetsCoughitUp says:

I know I sound bitter, being a Mets fan for over 35 years, but this one really was a big punch to the gut considering the importance of the moment (last game at Shea,…)

      • MetsFan4Decades says:

As a fan for 40 years, been there, done that, worn the tee shirt. Know just how you feel, dude.

I am so totally pissed off.

        • washtiger says:

          Since 1971 — 37 yrs for me. Sigh…

        • m29w_12789 says:

Was at Shea in 64 – saw Mets and Cards. Started with them at the Polo Grounds. You know they were bad the first few years , but they were yours and you thought in time things might get better.
I felt like a knife went in my mid section and was turned today Beltran this time can hold his head up this time after the 2006 debacle. Reyes this weekend was almost non existent. The bullpen was a pig pen. The young guys, evans, murph looked good. Parnell and Niese need to be given a shot. I would change the pen but no other drastic changes. I like how TB and Minn built their programs. The Twins especially , they lose Johan, and Torri hunter. THey have all these young guys pitching with Nathan in the pen and wala they are there.

    • mattbez says:

Hey guy — last I checked, Omar Minaya wasn’t the guy who couldn’t get the runner in from 3rd. He put the guys in place to perform, and they didn’t. This ain’t on Omar.

  25. Fiya Minaya says:

The Wilpons are a complete joke. This ridiculously tacky ceremony AFTER the game, retaining Minaya the half-wit for another four years and displaying a complete and utter lack of awareness on how to run a team generally is truly shocking.

  26. Genesis Does says:

Well that should just about clear up the bandwagon. Who else is looking forward to tons of available seats in Citi Field.
Im not normally one for superstition, but for the love of god, RETIRE #17. The number is CLEARLY cursed.

    • SteamboatWilly says:

I’ve been saying this ever since the collapse of 2007. To give Keith’s number to the likes of Koo and Lima for goodness sakes. Whoever is responsible for that should be banned from any future Mets games.

  27. rockets212 says:

would you consider trading reyes for a package of blue chip prospects?

  28. wethreekings says:

I swear, if Minaya fs this up again, I’m gone. As they say, if you fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice, shame on you.

Looks like everything going on in the beginning of the year wasn’t because of Willie…just can’t trust this group of players and team. This really hurts.

  31. Chiefman says:

I think we are suffering from the Curse of Bill Buckner.

May we never ever ever see Luis Castillo, Scott Schoenweiss or Aaron Heilman in a Met uniform again. To me, they are the symbols of this team’s failure the last two years.

This team needs some visible changes. In addition to the three above, we are also done with Alou, El Duque and Pedro. More have to go.

The only guys who really stepped up this week were Santana and Beltran. The rest of them broke our hearts.

  32. Fiya Minaya says:

    Where’s Minaya the camera hound?

  33. WrightsRight says:

How the Marlins got up for this game more than the Mets says it all. The Marlins have been laughing in our face for the last year. They relished making the fans cry last year and are relishing it this year. Are the Mets even capable of that? Do they have that “out for blood” attitude?

Shea is closing, all of these Mets legends in attendance…Johan pitches like a God yesterday…the stakes are high and the offense stay at home and the bullpen acts like they usually do.

Meanwhile the Yankees are busting their a$$es to get Moose his 20th win. They had a mission today and they’re getting it done. It’s about character. Letting this happen two years in a row, letting this team piss on them and their fans two years in a row, shows a startling absence of character.

I’m more sad than angry right now.

  34. SantanaCYYOung says:

so us pessimists (realists) were killed throughout the year and look how it turns out,

i saw it coming, those who don’t learn from history will inevitably see history repeat itself

    losers

wright is arod, if you can get halliday for him, i say do it

i had no confidence in them today although i was rooting hard

how does schowenweis pitch to a righty?

can we please retire the ya gotta believe, its pathetic

this organization is the LAUGHING-stock of MLB

    • Mex_17 says:

Are you talking about 2007 or 2008? I can’t keep them straight.

    • wethreekings says:

Are you happy? Is this what you wanted? Halladay is old, no way does anyone in their right mind make that trade. You’re right on the show fiasco, but just stop trying to lord over people. It just shows everyone how pathetic you are.

  35. skylog says:

see you all in a few months. let’s hope the teams problems are actually properly addressed this off-season and some real cahnges are made. there will be a lot of money coming off the books and i hope that the people in charge realize that this team needs “fixing” and not “tweaking.”

we can only hope, well, as this point, b/c that is all we have left. at least it should be a very interesting off-season one way or another.

  36. Mex_17 says:

We have no farm system (thanks Omar), so no good young players on the horizon.

Our “core” is supposed to be the great young duo of Reyes and Wright., who combined for a big 0 for 8 in today’s do or die game.

Both Reyes and Wright play incredibly stupid baseball at times, and they both manage to disappear when it matters. If this is our core, our core $ucks.

The “future” was 2007 and 2008. 2009 feels more like a downward spiral into a shiny new toilet.

Let’s get all excited for those $200 tickets, so we can watch the exact same players who choked and collapsed repeatedly in 2007 and 2008.

Woo hoo! I can’t wait!!! When the Mets are up 14-2 in a game in April, and Wright hits that towering HR to make it 15-2, I will salute him with my $14 beer, and chant M V P !

  37. steve333 says:

Yet another season ending gutless performance by the Mets.

They should all be ashamed of themselves.

Wilpon is an idiot and Omar is inept, but the players need to all look themselves in the mirror and ask if they see a man staring back at them or a boy.
Except Santana, who is a stud, the entire team lacks guts and courage.

We would have been better off if the team has just stunk the entire season so maybe Wilpon would have had the balls to just fire everyone involved-Minaya, Bernazard, Manuel, etc.
Now, we are stuck with 4 more years of mediocrity.
    Pathetic.

  38. imtiredofguiseppefranco says:

    CITI FIELD HERE WE COME

  39. ridethesnake says:

I am sure the real Met fans are disappointed. The posers and trolls will post about how they knew and how they wanted the Mets to lose. They just like to see others in pain. Ignore them. The bottom line is that there is something wrong with this team, and it is not one player or two players or even a GM. It’s the culture that suddenly has taken over this team — and it is suddenly inescapable. I don’t know what can be done to change it (Bobby V? Beltran trade?), but it can’t be adding a couple pieces and hoping the talent takes over. It has to be ripped up.

That said, let’s all feel the pain for a few days, mourn this awful feeling, and start thinking RATIONALLY about how to fix this.

I am devastated and will take days to get over this. But I will and I will find a way to deal with the anger, starting with thinking about what I hope they do to change this around.

    • Chiefman says:

As much as I came to like Jerry manuel this team DEFINITELY needs a new manager…somebody who is NOT part of the current organization. I can’t take anymore of this pain.

    • SantanaCYYOung says:

so you’re proposing to trade the one guy (beltran) that showed up today?

      wow

this team does not (except for santana) have that one guy that says i’m going to get that big hit, drive in that big rbi, put u on my shoulders WHEN IT COUNTS

      • ridethesnake says:

check your anger at the door. I said the team needs to be ripped up and suggested trading one of the guys with high value, yes. My point was to step back and deal with your anger before taking it out on people who post ideas about how this team can be ripped up and fixed. In one sentence you backed keeping Beltran and in the next you said the team only has Santana. Step back and heal.

    • skylog says:

i have been calling for major changes for the last two weeks. clearly, none of us know what those would even be, but something seems wrong in their heads. that said, IF, and a big IF here, the pen did not blow or IF the team hit with risp, then i think a lot of this talk would never even come up. i think it just kept building unto itself it just consumed them once again.

IF the pen was right, maybe they keep a lead, maybe everything is different? maybe they don’t fold? we will never know, but i just think the chances of the “core” being broken up are just about 0. now, as it is clear, fixing a pen is just about a 50-50 proposition, but they need to make major changes and they are almost forced into making a serious play for k rod. is he the savior, well, who knows, but given everything, i do not think they have a choice. they are going to make major moves out there, and they almost have to make him their priority and hope they can piece together around him. it is a crap shoot, but if they can at least fill one spot, the most important, with “a sure thing,” it at least leaves more room for error.

i don’t know, frustrated, just losing my mind.

    Dear Mets Fan:

All of us at the Mets are bitterly disappointed in failing to achieve our collective goal of building upon last year’s success. We did not meet our organization’s expectations — or yours. Everyone at Shea feels the same range of emotions as you — our loyal fans — and we know we have let you down. We wanted to thank you for your record-breaking support of our team this year.

Equally important, Ownership will continue its commitment in providing the resources necessary to field a championship team. Omar will be meeting with Ownership shortly to present his plan on addressing our shortcomings so that we can achieve our goal of winning championships in 2008 and beyond.

    You deserve better results.

Many thanks again for your record-breaking support.

    Or maybe not.

  42. metsforever says:

It’s time to bring back the 86 guys. They had heart and were characters. Wally for manager, Teuful, Ojeda, Mazz for coaches.

I hate to drop the hammer on the gangsta, but we made that mistake with Willie last year.

  43. SteamboatWilly says:

Blow up the bullpen and the bench! Chavez is an absolute instant out at the plate, and oh Marlon Anderson….please. Also on the hit list should be the ever reliable cathers Cancel and that defensive wonder Schneider.

  44. mookie says:

If there is something to be said about manuel, is that he acknowledged that that the bull pen stinks. Wille always played it out that nothing was wrong. Everyone could see that bullpen stunk and it was frustrating that he played it off like nothing was wrong.

    • metsforever says:

Agreed. Manual knew what he was doing for the most part. You could see the fear in his eyes when he had to go to the mound. There was none of that all is well talk.

Either way, he has to go. The whole staff has to go.

      • ridethesnake says:

It is sad but I do agree Manuel has to go. I loved him, he was great for this team, but when a flower grows on a pile of manure you shed a tear and move on.

There is no way they go for the band-aid this year. They can’t give the party line of: “Let’s not overreact.” and keep the majority of the staff and team in tact.

Tear up the staff, move some big names away and bring in new ones, get an entire new bullpen (I believe only Show is locked in to a big contract, so it shouldn’t take much work), and gut the top, gut the bottom, leave most of the core, and change the culture. You cannot go another year hoping it doesn’t happen next year because we are too talented. Sports goes beyond talent.

  45. MetfaninFL says:

I feel numb all over after this happening again but I’m really upset that we couldn’t win the last game at Shea regardless of what was at stake. I guess it was meant to open and close with a Mets loss. That being said I don’t think the problem with this team is character or heart. Look at the White Sox. They have a team full of “grinders”, yet they were in free fall this month too. The problem with this team was the bullpen. Don’t fool yourself into thinking it was anything else. Wright, Beltran and Reyes better be back next year. People said Wright isn’t clutch and point to the game against the Cubs with the man on 3rd but look at the game before when the Mets were down 2-0 and he got a basehit to tie the game. I would consider that a “clutch” hit. I hope we have a new manager this year. Jerry did the best he could but I am tired of seeing matchups being played at all costs. I want to see a manager who lets pitchers pitch whole innings. Of course I also want to see pitchers who are capeable of pitching whole innings. It was a fun ride up until the end. See you at Citi Field in 09. Lets Go Mets

    • ridethesnake says:

not to nitpick but if they won it wasn’t the last game… :)

but you are right — a monster bullpen changes a game on a dime. A bad pitcher is relieved, the offense relaxes, etc. Even today, the offense was pressing knowing once Ollie melted down it was over.

Nevertheless, it will cst a lot of other people their tenure here.

  46. mgska55 says:

In my opinion, this entire collapse (yes, it was a collapse. They had decent leads in the division going into September, and again in the Wild Card just a couple weeks ago…) can be blamed on the offense.

The bullpen was awful, let’s face it, but I find it incredible just how mediocre the lineups played day in and day out. They would have one break-out game, and you’d think it was going to turn around, and then the next day they looked like a bunch of fish.

For example, they had the dramatic comeback win against Chicago, and then the next day, they scored 1 run against the Marlins.

There’s a lot of work to be done this off season.

    • Mex_17 says:

I don’t even see what Braindead Minaya can do this offseason to fix this disaster of a team.

None of the free agents are appealing. Teixeira? UGH. Manny? NO.

Even if he manages to improve the bullpen through sheer dumb luck, we’re still left with the exact same bunch of hitters who got us 5 runs in 27 innings against FLA.

The entire team chokes, is he going to replace them all?

No matter what, we’ll still have Wright and Reyes to drag us down the toilet every September. How do you compensate for that? How do you fix it? I have no clue.

      • ridethesnake says:

Teixeira is 28 and hits 300 with 30+ and 120+ every year basically… not sure what’s wrong with him, but I happen to think he is a solid fit here. Other than that he always has slow Aprils and could be bood into a season long slump…

  47. Shades of Ty Wigginton says:

    This means on thing…

The New York Mets arent over the Braves yet. Its always a former Brave that ends our season.

    Adam Wainwright – 2006 — Braves farmhand
    Tom Glavine – 2007 – no comment
Wes Helms – 2008 – former Brave. Pinch hit go-ahead homerun.

  48. casey s. says:

Well, fire up the hot stove!

  49. MetsFan4Decades says:

I can’t agree with any of you who think the offense was the problem. And how many guys do we have that came up with over 100 RBIs?. Plain and simple, this was the result of a BP that sux big time. Just half those blown games back, we win the division.

It really is that simple. You can’t keep expecting the offense to coverup for an ineffective BP. Even if you only have a two run lead, that BP should be able to protect that, the closer should get 3 outs.

    • Mex_17 says:

Where were these RBI machines the last three games?

      5 runs in 27 innings. C H O K E …

      • skylog says:

no one is going to argue the fact that they did not get it done when it counted most, as the numbers show, but, i think it is more than crystal clear that the pen was the main problem on this team.

sure, if the team did better in “big” spots they probably go one to win the east, however, they were still a good run-scoring team. the pen was just horrid and over the course of the season cost them more. not only simply by losing games, but by losing games where the mets did score, did put up runs and had leads, games they were in line to win.

i think it was more than clear that after 07, the pen needed help. it only got worse AND it lost wagner, who even with his problems this season could have been a big difference maker down the stretch.

given ALL the problems this team had this season (think about it, there were tons) and the fact that the phillies pen was awesome, they had no truly killer injuries and lidge was just about perfect, i can honestly say i am somewhat shocked that they were even in it. it does not make it taste any less bitter given they had a chance, in fact, i suppose it makes it worse, but to even be there was somewhat of a miracle.

  50. metsforever says:

Man, Gooden and Strawberry have to be the saddest cases of wasted talent ever.

What was the deal with the devil that they made in ‘86?

    • WrightsRight says:

we obviously haven’t paid back our debt yet after these two seasons…

      • jimyager says:

If these BUMS could not get hyped up enough to win it in 2006 after watching the 1986 team being greeted by screams and cheers fron thousands of fans and feeling the love, then they must be dead. If watching the Cardinals get there rings and raise the WS banner in 2007 did not get these guys going and playing the final game at Shea Stadium with all the METS greats there did NOT pump them up, then its time to go. Everytime a team like the Braves, Marlins or Phillies opens there mouth and talks trash about th eMETS how do they respond, WE LOOSE. Way to go guys, it just prooves that they are correct and we are bums.

  51. deotriniplaya says:

People can blame the offense as much as you want, wright, and reyes, i agree to a point, but that bottom line was, that the bullpen screwed us, not only from todays games, but from the other blown games we had in the beginning of the seasons, all johan beauitful pitched games, to the time we need just 3 in the ninth to secure a win. If the same bullpen exist next year at least more than 75% of it, i am afraid i will have to find a new team, because I will just be looking at another repeat. Like gary brought up during a broadcast towards the end of the season, the mets lead mlb with 27 blown saves, which meant we should of already won our division and be well rested for the playoffs if it wasnt for the bullpen. Sorry mets fan for what happened, its sad to see it happen for 2nd consecutive year i’ll see you next year, Mets fans are #1 and we deserve better than this. Lets go Dodgers lets see torre scew the yankees, and Phils

  52. Genesis Does says:

This ceremony is kind of nice. Its taking a lot of the sting of the season off. Especially seeing the ovations for Koos, Keith, Doc, Straw, Piazza and Seaver.

Everybody on that list should have their number retired.

  53. Dirtysanchez says:

Welp it was a hellova year. Before this thread gets blown out of control i would like to say i am pissed but maybe this was for the better. Omar has his work cut out for him. A MAJOR overhaul in the bullpen. So i think the priories are these
    1) resign ollie-yes i know people may be weary about this but he did ok this year and hopefully his pricetag would have dropped.
    2) sign a #3 or 4 guy.
    3) for god sakes please TRADE HEILMAN AND SHOW.
    4) sign a closer or obtain one via trade
    5) NO MANNY
    6) (i have changed my position on this) Have daniel murphy start at 2b next year depending on how he does in the fall league. Omar must trade castillo if murphy does well.
    7) if omar can GET RID OF MARLON ANDERSON.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

      8) no manuel next year..try oberkfell.

    • nastyslider says:

do not resign Ollie we can get Burnett for the same price.
I’ll agree with no Manny cause our main focus should be the pen. Get someone like K-Rod or Fuentes if not both. Yes definetly trade Castillo, Heilman, and Show. I suggest leaving Murph in the OF and signing the O Dawg to play 2nd base

      • Dirtysanchez says:

only probelm with the odog thing is we will be eating alot of castillos contract. Odog will want a utley type salary and i dont think the mets should commit to that with another injury prone player. We need murphys bat in the lineup and the only position that he may get the most playing time is 2b as we have pagan/tatis/evans to man LF unless omar signs someone else

    • wethreekings says:

      1) Ok is not good enough. Sign Burnett.
      2) Someone like a Derek Lowe, Jon Garland, Ryan Dempster, Randy Wolf, Kyle Lohse… I actually heard Zach Greinke is on the block in KC. That would be sweet. Also, let Niese try out for #5.
      3) Yes and yes. And Sanchez. And Rincon. Basically the whole pen except Smith, Parnell, and maybe Stokes or Feliciano. Bring Kunz up as well. Then, get guys like Brandon Lyon, Juan Cruz, Scot Shields, etc.
      4) K-ROD!!! Backup plans could range from trading for Huston Street, Putz, or Sherrill, or signing Fuentes.
      5) I’d tend to agree, unless we’re put in a REALLY good posititon to sign him. Make the call, but don’t pursue it too far.
      6) See how D-Rex does, for sure. However, be prepared to make a call to Orlando Hudson. Plus, there are plenty of 2B who could very well be moved. Uggla, Kelly Johnson, Rickie Weeks, Brian Roberts…even Robby Cano. Not saying I necessarily want any of them, but they may be good choices.
      7) Yes.
      And may I add:
Dump Castillo no matter well. Ugh, I hate him.
It probably goes without saying, but don’t resign Pedro.
Get rid of Schneider. Get someone like Miguel Montero, Kelly Shoppach, just someone that can hit a little bit.
Now for some more difficult thoughts.
Does Ryan Church go? I don’t think we’re getting good Church back anytime soon.
What do we do with Nick Evans? I could be convinced he’s our future 1B, but he may be a guy to trade for prospects/bullpen arms
      Debate!

    chavez
    ayala
    anderson

      easley
      the third base coach
castro ( unhealthy and cannot even throw my grandma out)

    • scoop says:

why would you want to get rid of chavez?

and schneider is definitely an above average offensive catcher, and it isn’t like there are many other options. castro is also the best backup catcher in the league, so i don’t know what else you would propose.

and people have forgotten really quickly how church saved the mets during the first 2 months of the season. obviously the concussions threw his season off, but we already have him under contract. he has a great glove in right field and is definitely a solid bat

  56. MetsFan4Decades says:

Cool song and montage on the post game ceremonies.

  57. RichardK says:

Well it’s pretty clear you didnt watch this series, since you called it a 4 game series and now just said Olly was on the mound for that Endy Catch? No he wasnt, that was the bullpen.

Terrible season, tear down Shea already, good riddance. And every single man in the pen BETTER be on another team next year.

  58. BIG17EASY says:

Two mistakes in this post that need to be corrected:
    1. The Mets were not eliminated from the playoffs today. They were eliminated from playoff contention. There’s a difference. (This mistake is made twice in the post.)
    2. Perez was not on the mound when Chavez made the great catch today.

  59. sports2012 says:

this post game ceremony is hell… no one is into it at all

  60. GregB says:

Good riddance to Shea. Maybe CitiField will be the fresh start this team needs. Hopefully it will come with a bullpen and a couple of clutch hitters.

I’m going to try to become a Rays fan for the next few weeks, but I don’t know how much Mets-less October baseball I’ll be able to stomach.

  61. darkstar73 says:

The Mets lost, they didn’t make the postseason, all of your excuses for why that is mean nothing, excuses mean nothing, they didn’t make it, face the facts. You can blame it on any one player or group of players, but this team as a whole didn’t get it done over the course of 162 games. BUT… there was plenty of drama, story lines, comebacks, meltdowns, stars, duds, and the rest. It’s baseball, and it hurts, but in the end, this team kept me interested all the way through 162 games. This team is still in the process and I like the looks of the future. Players like Murphy, Evans, Niese, Parnell (not to mention Wright, Reyes, Santana, Beltran, and others we already have) are good pieces to move forward with. Obviously the bullpen needs work and we need a replacement at closer. If Wagner doesn’t blow out his arm, I’m pretty sure we’re in the postseason, but who knows, that’s life. All in all, disappointment is obvioius, but the future isn’t so bleak as so many paint it. This team is a couple tweaks from the postseason and a few more away from the world series.

    • gipper82475 says:

But do you trust Omar to make those tweaks given how he failed to address the just the bullpen issues that have plagued the team for the last two years?

Does Omar deserve a Castillo-length extension for these back-to-back proverbial punches in the gut of Metsdom?

      • darkstar73 says:

do you prefer a GM who gives us ‘02, ‘03, and ‘04 with absolutely nothing to hope for? Your choice….I prefer at least a chance. Just so happens that every new yorkers perception of a baseball franchise is the ability to make the playoffs every single year (because of the yankees), sorry doesn’t happen that year. It strings, sure, but it’s better than looking up at a 15 game deficit in september.

  62. WrightsRight says:

All the ex-Mets look extremely bummed. They know the crowd is upset, so they’re upset. Sad that the 2008 Mets had to ruin this.

  63. mookie says:

This what we need to do.
    1. Sign manny. he’s clutch and we all know he doesn’t care what the circumstance is.
    2. trade evans and church for some good bullpen arms in pitsburgh.
    3. sign a player or two to help the bullpen.
    4. Murphy to right field.
    5. Bring up Brad Holt in Mid june to become our 8th inning guy.
    6. sign a second baseman.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

no manny please. Evans can play IF and should eventually play 1b. Church can stay because both him and evans will be cheap. You got to be kidding on the holt topic.

      • mookie says:

we need a destraction so that wright and reyes can relax. who else. I agree the bullpen is the most troubling part but we have to address the situational hitting as well.

    • nastyslider says:

screw manny we need more help in the pen sign both K-Rod and Fuentes if you have to

    • steve333 says:

NO Manny! Enough with loser personalities. We need winners, leaders, not some jerk who folds on his team because he’s feeling like a petulant child.

      NO MANNY!

  65. Mex_17 says:

Why didn’t they have the ceremony BEFORE the game?

Surely they could have figured out what the collapsers were going to do today.

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

I don’t think anyone could have predicted the last game at Shea would be for a play off spot and they’d lose – when they planned this.. That being said, this ceremony really is bittersweet, isn’t it?

  66. mrmustseetv says:

I’m utterly sick to my stomach. I can’t believe this team did this again. This team cannot come back as is. Changes need to occur, even if it means trading some fan favorites.

    My thoughts:

    1. No freakin’ season slogans like “Your Season Has Arrived”. They’re are corny and arrogant for a team that has proven nothing. 2006 was a long, long time ago my friends.

    2. Alou, El Duque, Pedro, Schoeneweis, Castillo, Heilman, Marlon, and Stokes should never, ever be allowed to wear a Mets uniform again. They should go either to get younger or because they just plain s-ck!

    3. DO NOT SIGN ORLANDO HUDSON! Enough with spending large dollars on non-difference makers. Great glove, great character guy, but he’s a .300 hitter with no power. Is that worth $10M? NO!

    4. Bring back Jerry. He earned it nomatter what. If he was managing this team all year it would have been a different story.

    5. Sign K-Rod. Toby, I know you disagree, but is there really a better choice? Huston Street is gonna cost prospects and he’s more overrated than K-Rod.

    6. Just resign Ollie.

    7. Try and trade for a left fielder with pop. I would trade Fernando Martinez is a package for Holliday. Why wait for the Teenage Hitting Hype Machine?!

    8. From a P.R. standpoint, the Wilpons should make the first game a Citi free. They should refund season ticket holder for that one game, and then raffle off the rest of the tickets to fans as a good will gesture.

    9. David Wright should never wear the “C” as captain on this team. I love him. He’s my favorite player, but he’s shown not to be a great leader. A leader wills his team into the playoffs like Rollins and Holliday did last year and like Varitek did for the Sox a few years back.

    • Mex_17 says:

Wright should wear a big “C” for “CHOKE” on his forehead.

I agree with taking it off his jersey.

      • skylog says:

i am with you on most of this, but i would take hudson in a second. i even agree with argument against him, but i have to think a lineup with

        jose
        orlando
        david
        carlos
        carlos

        is a great start.

i think the biggest thing is that the team needs to get back to being agressive, running and most of all, smart. there were so many times this season where dumb plays cost them games. i want to see more running, hit and runs, fundys. i know this is not something that can be turned on, but they need it……well, all of that and k rod.

        • steve333 says:

I would definitely not bring back Delgado. Yeh, he had a great second half, so what?
We need to get younger, more aggressive, more of a winning attitude-Delgado is none of those.

Get rid of Delgado, Castillo, all of the bullpen except Joe Smith, all of the scrubs except Easley.
Trade for Matt Holliday, even if it means getting rid of F Mart and Church.
          Sign Hudson for 2nd base.
Consider signing Texiera for 1st base or putting a rookie there.
          Schneider is OK.
Wright obviously wont be traded and I dont see Reyes going anywhere.
          Beltran stays.
Completely new bullpen plus Joe Smith.
Sign Burnett or Ollie. Maine will be back with Santana. Rookie to fill other slots.

          Reyes
          Hudson
          Murphy
          Beltran
          Texiera
          Wright
          Holliday
          Schneider

          Quite a lineup, huh?.

        • wethreekings says:

I would bring back Delgado because he’s cheap. One year of Delgado would be terrific. He’s definitely going to have a better year next year than 07 or 08.

        • jimyager says:

Are you for real? Delgado has to go, he has that attitude from 2006. He will NOT have a bounce back year and the end or rather last month and a half was just a hot streak and lucky. We cant take a chance on him hitting 150 again and dragging down the team. Its been real and its been nice but it has nit been real nice. SEE YA DELGADO.

        • wrightstuff08 says:

i agree with not resigning Delgado because when you have a chance to get a stud like Tex at first base, then you do it. If you keep Delgado for 1 year, you have to go out and find a top first baseman in 2010 when there might not be any upper tier hitters available. First base is a traditional power hitter position, so i doubt Evans could ever fill that need.

    • nastyslider says:

2007 was over when we lost 2 games to the Braves and then 2 games to the Nats and 2 games to the Cubs. that was 6 games out of the final 12 that we lost. as always they hang around and give us false hope, but, when the going gets tough the METS fold. We had a 1 game lead over the Phillies when we went into Atlanta and between the Braves and Nats we gave up first place, took it back again and then lost it for good against the Cubs. CHOKE

  75. Mex_17 says:

I can’t watch the ceremony, are the 2008 collapsers still in the dugout or on the field? Or is it just the good Met players from the past who are participating in it?

  76. metsfaninmd says:

I always kind of laughed at this suggestion in the past but…..

    Bring back Bobby V!!!!!

He turned crap into a NL pennant. If given this kind of talent I think the team would play better baseball day in day out. The Mets this year were not a very good team. They won games because they were so talented but they never really outplayed anyone. Before I get crucified I’ll explain. They relied way too much on home runs from Delgado and Wright. They had terrible at-bats all year up and down the lineup. How many times did they have 1st and 3rd with one out and not score a run? Many times. The 2006 team (with Valentin who I am convinced was extremely instrumental to that team’s success) had big innings, multiple hits to drive in runs. This year we needed errors and walks just for the outside chance that someone would hit a jack, The lineup was weak this year. Once you got past the number 5 batter we were cooked. The bullpen was atrocious also and needs to be gutted but the offense was so bad so often. We need:

    1. a catcher who can hit. It’s not asking that much Omar.

    2. Dan Murphy to play 2nd, I dont care, he’ll develop, he was an infielder.

    3. Perhaps a left fielder, I heard those are useful. Preferably not one who is 50.

    4. Guys in the bullpen who can pitch. What is the point of even having relief pitchers if for the sake of the time you hope for 9 innings from the starter? As fans and as a team we should not be scared when we bring in someone from the pen.

    • chronique1 says:

I love Bobby V and all, but Jerry handled these guys fantastically, but he had that pen to work with. Whats he to do there? I’d like to see Jerry back, but Minaya is a snake so I expect another screw job to take heat off of him (although he’s already got his 4 years)

      Omar Minaya is a sorcerer.

  77. istillhatemdonaldgrant says:

    A few observations:

    1. Without checking the numbers, it seems the Mets have’t hit consistently since they had to trade Nady. He brought a balance to the lineup and hit well with 2 outs and men in scoring position.

    2. Of the teams that made the postseason none had the overwhelming injuries that the Mets did this year.

How many teams could overcome losing the starting left fielder (Alou), and his replacements Pagan and Tatis, the starting right fielder, the closer, and the number 2 starter in Maine? Plus an injury to Pedro, the 4 or 5 starter, that basicaly cost him this year and left him mostly ineffective when he did pitch. Incredibly Pedro pitched much better last year coming off the injury than this year.

Of all these injuries, if only Wagner had been healthy, the Mets win the division by a good 7 or 8 games.

    3. There was also the handicap of playing 70 games with Willie as the manager. If you just project out Jerry Manuel’s record to a full year, the Mets also win the division easily.

    4. But it’s also true that I’ve never seen a club that scores early and then goes to sleep. Just a little bit of clutch hitting late and the Mets also win the division, despite all the above.

    5. In a sense the money spent on Johan was wasted, since so many of what should have been victories for him and the Mets were thrown away by the bullpen. Obviously the Mets have to get a reliable top notch, relatively young closer — KRod or one of the 2 or 3 others that might be available.

Wagner was already on the downside when we got him, and he also had a reputation for coughing up big games. Let’s not do that again.

    6. The Mets didn’t choke or collapse — the bullpen ruined the season and was the worst pen I’ve ever seen . They often looked like they were throwing batting practice. I’ve never seen a group of alleged major leaguers that could give up 5 runs in about 10 pitches.

    7. A bad bullpen doesn’t just blow games, it also ruins a team’s attitude and morale. The players get a feeling that no lead is safe, which has to make them tense at the plate. Maybe a better pen will relax the club and also result in better clutch hitting, especially late.

    8. I’m looking forward to the Phillies choking in the postseason, and I’m looking forward to Omar making the key acquisitions to fix what is wrong with this club.

    9. Pick up Delgado’s option, or negotiate a new contract. Without his revival, we’d have been no where. Not sure about OP. Give Pedro an incentive laden deal — I think his mechanics were messed up by his groin injury and that his arm is sound. He might just be a useful number 3 on this club.

mets cubs would have been a great series starting wednesday

  79. MetsFan4Decades says:

I don’t agree with bringing back Bobby V. They fired him for a reason. I poster this earlier. What are we? The Yankees and Billy Martin?

If Jerry will not be back, bring in fresh blood.

  80. domosnacks5 says:

Omar needs to wipe that sh#t eating grin off his face.

    THIS IS YOUR FAULT

  81. Furioso says:

“And today the game was full of it”

    ………….As was the season.

Big thanks to the offense, for obviously getting a 3 day jump on the offseason and not showing up this weekend.

    Pretty stats.

    No October.

    Fiting.

    Shea won’t be missed.

  82. WrightsRight says:

I’m fine with Manuel staying. Unless it’s Bobby V, I really can’t think of anyone else who would be suitable.

  83. imtiredofguiseppefranco says:

i would have rather got swept by the cubs then what happened today

  84. rogasm says:

Funny thing, my wife, a die hard Cardinals fan brought up a great point. Why didn’t do they do the whole ceremony thing BEFORE that game? Seems to make sense to pump that place up a bit more.

    • ccmetfan says:

I think it was done after because if the mets lost today(which they did),the fans would’ve left the stadium quickly and the picture of shea stadium emptying so fast on its last day wouldn’t have been a nice last memory.

  85. 4eyeJoe says:

god, for some reason i get this feeling that Bud Selig is happy as hell right now with the mets out of the playoffs.

Do Not Bring Oliver Perez back!! just don’t bring him back. the mets need to sign someone that can actually go over 200 innings a year.

  86. MetsFan4Decades says:

For those who don’t get SNY:

Interviewing Omar right now. He won’t make a commitment one way or another to bringing back Jerry. All he would say is he told Jerry he did a good job. Said he wants to get this manager issue resolved sooner rather than later.

That being said, I can just about listen to him right now.

He also repeated a couple of times: ‘this team has gotten it done. We have won 97 games with these guys.’ Beautiful. You could not make this up.

  87. Furioso says:

WOW…..Omar thinks building an 89 win team is acceptable

4 more years of failure teams built by an overrated GM who is not even as successful as Steve Phillips

    • koosman says:

5 more years. His current contract is up after next year. Does anyone outside of the Wilpon family understand the rush to extend him?

  88. WrightsRight says:

Omar “giving credit to the other teams.” I’m sick of this team giving credit. No other team “gives credit” like this team does. Good teams hate their opponents. This team Tips its Cap and Gives Credit. Please stop with that.

  89. hoebaghoey says:

The silver linning in this whole thing is that Omar is FORCED to make a big move or two this offseason.. This team is going to e great next year. The bullpen is getting a face lift and alot of the old guys next year are gone including Alou’s 10 million dollar contract. Get out the Check book its time to show the Free agents such as K-Rod, Teixeira, Sabathia, Manny, etc. the money. Omar this is whay you got a 4 year extension now show us that it was money WELL spent. LETS GO METS 2009 IS OUR YEAR OPEN CITI FIELD WITH A BANG.

    • imtiredofguiseppefranco says:

could not agree anymore, though texeria would be nice, we cant. sabtahia and krod should do the trick, with maybe a fuentes or holiday as well

  95. nyj0126 says:

We shouldn’t bring back Jerry Manuel. Not because he didn’t do well. He did go like 55-38 which was a transformation from Willie’s 34-35 or full calender year mediocrity.

We shouldn’t bring him back because we should be committed to a new chapter. A new error.

This is above Omar. Omar fields the team, doesn’t he? This has to come from the Wilpon’s. The controllers of the franchise. They need to show some initiative and I believe these two collapses come on their shoulders.

If we hold onto Manuel, Warthen or anyone – or even worse re-sign Pedro, Alou or any of that junk, than we’re not committed to a new era.

Rule one – Don’t sign old players.
Rule two – Revamp the bullpen to it’s entirety.
Rule three – Get a new GM with new coaches with a new dynamic.

If they do all those three things, than we’ll be in good shape.

  96. bittergreen says:

The part that kills me, is that the Marlins gave lots of soundbites before starting this series, especially Scott Olsen.

And the bats could not show up for this series. Yes, those back-to-back homers in the 8th were killers. This is no doubt a terrible bullpen.

However, this last week was lost by the bats. The Wednesday night game vs. the Cubs, was lack of execution at the plate.

The Mets scored 5 runs these past 3 days, against a team with an awful bullpen.

  97. Furioso says:

Jose doesn’t look too broken up.

They have proven that 2006 was just a fluke and that they really are the big chokers. I GIVE UP ON THEM like they gave up on us. BUMS

  99. Maineiac says:

    Omar go back to Montreal…

I don’t care if they do not have a baseball team, maybe you could ruin a Hockey franchise, just don’t stay here.

    STFU choker

  101. nyj0126 says:

Too bad Marlon Anderson did absolutely nothing to contribute to those 92 wins too. Some leader in the club house he was. Too bad Jerry Manuel used him time after time again, just like Luis Castillo and Aaron Heilman. Weren’t Castillo and Marlon Anderson the sparks of the miserable collapse last year too just to throw a little irony in there?

  102. nyj0126 says:

Damion Easley once again did not get to a postseason – and he did nothing to help the cause when it counted kind of like MLB.TV.

  103. koosman says:

      • Furioso says:

Whatever I expecting, I sure didn’t see it.

I see a team of chokers who are already getting ready to blow it again in 09, from the GM on down

        • MetsFan4Decades says:

Sorry, you have absolutely no idea what 2009 will bring any better than the rest of us.

You, sir, would not be satisfied unless the Mets went all the way and swept every team.

You are always doomed for disappoinment with that thinking.

        • jimyager says:

What do you think 2009 will bring us? I think it would be safe to say NOTHING at all. Another season of losers that cant win the big game, that cant get the clutch hit that cant hold a lead or close out a game. I CANT WAIT! Sounds like fun. The METS have lost all credibility in the MLB, what player in his right mind would come and play here? unless it was for a real team like the Yankees. CHOKE AGAIN.

  105. docgoodens8ball says:

NEW YORK — The Mets have decided to bring back Jerry Manuel as manager, SI.com has learned.

Mets owner Jeff Wilpon believes the Mets “overachieved” this year considering their late-season injuries and bullpen deficiency. Manuel was hired to replace Willie Randolph in June with the Mets one game under .500. The Mets were 55-38 under Manuel.

So we ‘overachieved’ by not making the playoffs. Solid!

  106. nyj0126 says:

The big question is will the Wilpon’s show any initative? You know – of anyone, whether it be us, the media or Matt… no one ever questions them. No one ever points the finger at them. Like we have to just abide by their incompetence with a smile. Well, maybe not anymore.

  107. metsfan42793 says:

The one positive thing that came out of this year is that Omar and the Wilpons saw how bad the bullpen actually was and now can completely get rid of the bullpen. I sear to god if heilman is on this team next year it will be very hard to root for this team. I will still cheer for them but it will be hard to.

  108. ok

    1. Stop the talk of getting rid of Reyes and Wright there 24 and 25 respectivly they’ll be fine
    2. Fire Omar
    3. Do Not, I repeat DO NOT sign Manny
    4. K-Rod or Fuentes get someone who can get outs
    5. Cut Castillo, Heilmann, Schoeneweis, Feliciano, Ayala….
    6. Retire the # 17 already clearly the number is cursed
    7. Or have Keith coach the team..
    8. Since Keith doesn’t want to deal with the nonsense have Mazz coach the team

    or
clone Johan so he can pitch every pitch of every game

  109. WrightsRight says:

Beltran: “We know we’re a good team.”

Champagne will taste sweeter, we’re still in first place, etc, etc, etc, etc

  110. nastyslider says:

ONE OF THE STAR PLAYERS ON THIS TEAM HAS TO CALL OUT THE BULLPEN!!! THAT WILL PROMPT OMAR TO MAKE A TRADE IF THE MEMBERS OF THE ACTUAL TEAM GANG UP ON THE PEN!!!

  111. Genesis Does says:

lol awesome comment Beltran. “Of course we have to change our bullpen”

If theres ever a part of a team that deserved to get thrown under a bus, its those losers

    • nastyslider says:

Good job by Beltran if a big player like Beltran calls out this pen it’s definetly gonna change. Now another big player like Santana who has been raped by this bullpen has to say something like he doesn’t want to work with this pen anymore and if Omar doesn’t change it he’ll demand a trade

  112. zen says:

it was great to see all those great players: seaver, piazza, DOC, etc

    retire #16

crushing end to the season. crushing. not mad this year as i thought the players tried hard ’til the end. k-rod + other bullpen help.

i’d like the wilpons to sell the team, but what are you going to do?

    • Octoberfest911 says:

      WOW…
      This is great!!
      I LOVE THIS!!
KEEP DOING THOSE GREAT DUGOUT DANCES!!!
      THE NY BUSH LEAGUERS!!!

  113. mrmustseetv says:

I wanna hear Matt Cerrone’s spin? Where are you Matt?

    Warriors come out to plaaaaaaaaaay.

  114. Genesis Does says:

Sign K-rod AND fuentes. bring back ayala and smith. screw the rest

  115. rustyjr says:

well im back – drunk but back first off it was nice to see flynn and swan back along with millan kong and theodore and all the guys i grew up rooting for secondly WE GOTTA GET RID OF THIS FIN BULLPEN!!! IN THWE WORDS OF anIMAL HOUSE – SCOENWEISS -DEAD!! feliciano — dead!!! munoz – dead !!!!

  116. nyj0126 says:

I give Carlos Beltran credit. He said we were the team to beat which took guts even if he didn’t always show himself to be a leader in the spotlight, but he really is telling the truth. It’s not like the bullpen is one person – even if we think of Aaron Heilman.

Basically the indication was given that Beltran said Omar needs to change up the pen unlike last season and that if he doesn’t, than he’s not doing his job.

  117. Johan The Ace says:

Ryan Church played through pain all year and he went through hell. Give the guy a break. He is gonna be a good player

    • rustyjr says:

I AGREE BUT I wonder if he’s the right guy for us sorry about the caps i dranks 10 sammy adams in the last 20 minutes

    • 4eyeJoe says:

what is the deal with mets players and nagging hip injuries every year.

Church has some kind of hip injury at the moment.
John Maine and Delgado in 2007.

  118. nyj0126 says:

Why not retire 17 so the number doesn’t come back to haunt us?

  119. imtiredofguiseppefranco says:

what do you guys think of signing sabathia and krod, and trading for holliday? just because fuentes wants to close and will not take the set up man role

    • fortleemets says:

Our offense is fine. If I told you that Wright, Beltran and Delgado were going to have 110+ rbis and reyes was going to lead the league in triples and hits and have 68 rbis, u’d think we were definitely winning the WS.

    • nastyslider says:

there’s no way we’re getting Sabathia. K-Rod is a possibility. Maybe we can dump a few bullpen members, Castillo, and a prospect for Holliday . Fuentes may take a set up man role, he said he was willing to set up for Mariano, but I dunno if he’d wanna set up for K-Rod

      • nyj0126 says:

No one’s going to take Luis Castillo unless the Mets eat a big chunk of his contract. The Mets have 30+ million coming off the books with all the contracts getting off, so there’s no reason why there shouldn’t at least be one big splash along with the re-signing of Oliver Perez.

    • steve333 says:

Hell yes, and dump Delgado. Get some fresh blood and winning attitudes.

  120. Johan The Ace says:

Pedro has too. He lost his dad. He is better than what he showed

    • nyj0126 says:

Pedro’s a good guy. I kind of think he’s a little too proud sometimes. For example, he went after Mike Piazza when Piazza charged the mound on Mota because he said he wouldn’t do so to Clemens. Even though Mota truly showed a lack of character and hit him like 3 different times, including trying and missing on top of that. Not to mention using steroids and crunching under pressure in New York.

I’ll remember Pedro as a good guy with a sense of humor who was dominating in his era. I think Johan can take after a guy’s success such as Pedro. I just believe Pedro’s talent really zapped away quickly. Either that or the time in which he was injured would have been that decline anyway.

      • nyj0126 says:

My point with that was that he shouldn’t have defended Guillermo Mota just because he shares the same citizenship as him. Especially in criticizing the character of a Met legend. I know that’s long over, but I know I wouldn’t defend a dumb American at any cost lol Even Americans within his own party can’t defend their leader. Need I mention names? lol

  121. fortleemets says:

Soria is who we are going to get. However, that i just a closer and the bullpen issues were there with and without Wagner. More than anything, we an 8th inning guy. Lets bring back turk wendell.

  122. Furioso says:

Where does Omar go to get some leadership?

Because THAT’S what this team lacks.

    GET ROWAND

    • rustyjr says:

he’s not the answer furi – bring up evans or fmart!!

      • Furioso says:

        FMary – most overrated prospect.

        Evans- not good enough.

Rowand is a f-u type player. This team needs that

        • rustyjr says:

fmart -not escobar evans hey u never know – roand – flash ion the pan – rather see manny sorry bout the spelling too much alcehol

        • nyj0126 says:

Look at Gomez. Some people would say he was an overrated prospect, yet he turned out to be really good.

I’d say Milledge is coming a lot too. I think the injuries have hurt. Rushing up prospects have hurt. And the NY media giving extra attention and over-hyping guys hurts too. No one can deny it helped land us Johan though.

I think Fernando Martinez will turn out similarly to Carlos Gomez. A solid outfielder. Probably not a superstar, but someone who can fit anywhere in the line up. Give him time though. Why rush? We got Murphy, Evans and others who’ve taken longer and did better with time.

        • rustyjr says:

id rather have church than mill though

        • nyj0126 says:

Escobar was a total bust, but that was a while ago. Reyes, Wright and Pelfrey were by all means great prospects who’ve lived up to their potential who will only get better. ”Clutch” is another story – but statistically no one can deny that these guys have been there.

        • rustyjr says:

i agree and i feel fmart needs 1 more year thats why u use either evans- sign manny or trade for a power hitting outfirlder !

  123. nyj0126 says:

Ryan Church has to do something to change his swing. Or cut down. He swings as if he’s hitting fly balls with a wiffle bat to a little league team. And sometimes he really comes through. He’s apart of the Mets problems.

A lot of people held resentment towards Lastings Milledge last year. I’d say it was a pretty fair trade. Washington got a kid who’s head isn’t all there, but a good ball player. And we got a laid back right fielder who’s not a bad ball player. The best RF the Mets have seen in the last decade is obviously Xavier Nady, but acquiring Oliver Perez came at high costs. It’s funny how Roberto Hernandez was supposed to be the important guy in that deal.

  124. Johan The Ace says:

SCOOT SCHOENWEIS HAHA. WHAT A BUM

  125. Furioso says:

In 2009, are the players gonna even dare to question the fans if (whe) they boo?

  126. danlx13 says:

Next year wright needs to be moved to 5th in the order…if that means getting a #3 hitter then do it

    reyes
    beltran
    Manny
    Delgado
    Wright
    Hudson
    Church
    Schnieder

    Santana
    Burnett
    Pelfrey
    Maine
    Anyone else

    fuentes
    Smith
    FA
    FA
    FA
    FA
thats 3 big signings and fuentes which i dont think would cost alot…this can be done easily and would make the mets awesome

  127. WrightsRight says:

Jeez…i actually feel bad for Show. Seems pretty devastated.

  128. MetsFan4Decades says:

    Listening to Shoe’s interview.
I really do love this guy and you couldn’t get any more honest than him.
But…..he can’t be in that BP next year. He just cannot.

  129. imtiredofguiseppefranco says:

these guys look dramatized, i feel bad for easily, guy never played a playoff game before

  130. kd bart says:

Sabathia is going to the West Coast. He’s a California guy and will probably sign there. Pedro and Ollie are gone. Rotation will be Johan, Pelf, Maine, Niese(as the 5th) and an acquisition to be name. Murphy will go to fall ball to play second base and will become the Mets everyday second basemen. Mus tcome up with an everyday left fielder. Alou is gone. Position has been way too much of a revolving door the last two seasond. 12 guys started out there this season. Not Manny. Cost too much for his age. Church is fine in right. Was their best player early and had his season ruin by a concussion. Wasn’t the same after it. Offseason should help. Obviously need a closer and a complete overhaul of the bullpen. Tough because middle relievers are hit and miss from season to season. Can be great one season and absolute disaster the next. Saw it with Kolb down here in Atlanta. Was great with Milwaukee. Came here to close and was an outright disaster.

  131. Furioso says:

They’re all planning their evening dinner plans and vacations

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

      God are you ever miserable.
Are you watching the same interviews I am? Or are you really that big of a sore loser? NONE of these guys are taking this lightly.
      Get a grip, my man.

      • Furioso says:

I guarantee you we care more than they do

        • MetsFan4Decades says:

You are just crazy. There is no way any of these guys do not feel the same way we do about how this season ended.
From the fans online, to the ex-players, to the broadcast media, to the fans at the stadium crying right now, to the current players – they all feel this loss. Every single blasted one wanted to go to the post season. Why can’t you see that? How can you possibly think that team didn’t want to go??????

I just don’t understand how you can be a NY Met fan.

        • khmustache says:

          thought you didn’t care dude

  132. rustyjr says:

jesse and bobby o still looked like they could pitch!! – im dissapointed with the fans for leaving b4 the ceremonies – by friends theat are yankee fans were texting me chiding be about it

  133. domosnacks5 says:

Scoeneweis pulling a Glavine and the “sometimes there are things more important than baseball”.

He’s right, but that’s a surefire way to end up out of NY, which I’m sure is what he wants anyway.

I’ve backed you Scott, but so long and good riddance.

  134. mbreuer says:

I’m as disappointed as all of you, but you know we really didn’t support our team very well. I went to a Mets game in Philly this year and we were up 10-1. The Pilly fans should have been quiet and subduedx but instad they screamed with every pitch. You know what. Their team came back and we barely hung on to win 10-9.

I went to Shea and watched the Mets lose two games to Philly. The place was a tomb. We Met fans are always so quiet when our team falls behind. We boo all the damn time – we just don’t support the team like we used to in the old days. Yeah we need to scrap this bullpen, but we also need to look at ourselves and make sure Citifield is hell for the opposition – not for our own players.

    See ya next year.

I think manuel did a good job and does deserve another chance to coach a team. Just not ours. We need fresh blood and a fresh perspective. A young and up and coming manager with enthusiasm and believes in acountability.

    • rustyjr says:

agreed – and mookiw shoulda bween there and why no mention of torre or bobby v??

    • steve333 says:

      Wally Backman

    • itsmetsforme says:

exactly. I like Jerry personally, but this was a big mistake. He was just as bad as Willie. Same result. I see no solid evidence that a team with this much talent would have won those games anyway. His bullpen use was unimaginative to say the least. Will they now lose Oberkfell to boot? These players don’t need someone they like, they need someone they’re scared witless of.
      That is all.

  136. toomanyuniforms says:

It’s all gotta go!!! Fire sale!

Seriously folks, fine season, but injuries did us in at the end. Injuries and a gawdawful bullpen that should largely be in the independent leagues next year. We’ll have Murphy and Evans getting better, another year of Santana, and who knows what else? See you next year.

Oh and Fred Wilpon? Go pound sand.

    • rustyjr says:

true too but u rise above it too many – and u know me im mr positive!!

    • kd bart says:

When you take a step back, this team really did overcome a lot to almost pull it off. The 2007 team was a team that put it in cruise control most of the season, even when they were winning something was missing, and it came back to biurn them. This team had to battle distractions, will Willie be fired today or not?, and wholesale injuries to get as close as they did. For a great part of the season, they were depending on off the scrap heap players like Tatis and Easley, who both ended up injured at the end which hurt them, and rookies, Evans and Murphy, up from the minors. While Delgado, Reyes, Wright and Beltran were a constant everyday, the other 4 positions were a revovling door all season. The Phils and Brewers were able to go with a more consistent lineup all season. As for the bullpen. Where to start. The single most important reason why the season went the way it did. Way to many games blown late. I believe 12 games where they led in the 8th or 9th inning and I think 6 games lost when they led by 4+ runs at some point in the game.

  137. MetsFan4Decades says:

Wow. It has just been announced that Jerry is coming back as manager.

    • rustyjr says:

i can agree with thast if true

    • kd bart says:

He dserves to come back. Team was 17 games over .500 with him as manager. They never would’ve come close with Willie as manager. Would’ve finished back wth the Braves.

      • rustyjr says:

they responded for jerry i do feel bad for willie – but he clearly lost the team

      • itsmetsforme says:

that is impossible to prove. Take a good look at his bullpen use. As bad as the pen was, Jerry made it worse. At least Pelfrey got his rest today, huh? Jerry will be fired mid season too when these guys tune him out. In my opinion, the Mets needed to make drastic changes. Prepare for similar results next year.

    • FrankyJay says:

He did a great job, he take the team from nowhere and get us to talk about them today, sure, we hope they get in the playoffs, but that doesn’t mean the team is a complete disaster.
The team under Jerry was 55-38 (.591) that’s 95-67 for the full season, with the horrible bullpen. They just need to get their holes fixed and they will be on the hunt next year.
LF, 2B, SP, Closer and the whole bullpen is the team needs.
The bats get in slumps at the end, but this season has been one of the toughest we have seen, we lost 31 games we lead, even with 3,4,5 run leads, that’s not easy mentally for the batters.
Most interesting thing is that Marlon Anderson said that the team need 92 wins to win the division and we need to finish 58-35 when Jerry takes the team….Philadelphia wins the division with 92 wins, only 3 wins away to get the division crown, only with Atlanta i can recall 3 games in the las 2 weekends that we blew in the 8th and 9th…those 3 only and we were playing the dodgers on wednesday. (Philadelphia would have been the Wild Card).

      • rustyjr says:

if it weren’t for the freekin pen look at the majority of the losses – the freekin bullpen!! though i do admit we don’t know if billy w woulda saved most of those games we woulda won at least 3 that woulda get us into the play offs !!

  138. rustyjr says:

yo fred acknowledge the mets not the booklyn dodgers!!

  139. imtiredofguiseppefranco says:

gary , keith and ron just look devastated and are about to cry. what a depressing day, a guys sign said it all “thanks for the misery”
guess he came prepared. im sad to see shea go, but this will just motivate them more for the offseason to bluster this bullpen. hopefully next year will be a bang for citi field

  140. BKLYNmetsfan says:

for all of you who are going crazy over k-rod…
when he is going to come in, the 7th or 8th inning?
he is definitely not the solution
y’all need to come up with some better solutions
    bullpens are always a crapshoot
how is any of the bullpen going to be moved?
how is castillo going to be moved with 3 years left?

    • nyj0126 says:

How was Roger Cedeno moved when he has two years left on his contract in 04′ and 05′? Similar numbers if you think about it even if he was more healthy. He signed a 4 yr/18MM contract. The Mets winded up traded him to St. Louis eating 80 to 90 percent of the contract. Unfortunately, this is what will have to happen.

    • nyj0126 says:

Believe it or not, Scott Schoenweis had good numbers. 72 games. 57 innings. 3.12 ERA. Average pitching is even hard to come by at times. You don’t think a team like the Tigers, Yankees or someone will take a bite? It’s not like the Mets will be asking for a lot. As long as who ever is willing to take him and pay him his 3.65MM, he’ll be out of here. The Mets get back a couple mid-level guy’s. If the Yankees could sign Latroy Hawkins for 4MM, don’t be suprised if they want him.

      • nyj0126 says:

It’ll take more than K-Rod. The only guy really worth bringing back is Joe Smith. And Brian Stokes as a long man. If Stokes doesn’t work out there, we can use Parnell in that role. They’ll probably hold Feliciano because he’s cheap and led the league in appearances this year.

The Mets will bring back Stokes, Smith, Feliciano and I hope will look at signing K-Rod. It’s the other three spots that are question marks. Heilman has to and probably will be gone. Duaner Sanchez will have to be too. There’s a lot of people on here who say – we can still get him back to 06′ form. I say no. I say that’s the wrong approach. If we say that about him, have confidence in Smith and take back Feliciano – by the time you know it most of the bullpen would have remained.

Basically, a set up man has to be signed or acquired via trade too. I don’t know who that’ll be exactly, but they’ll look around. Developing Kunz and Burgos has to be a priority too.

  141. Furioso says:

Gary, Keith and Rom speak true.

They’re quietly devestating the core of this team in a way none of us ever can

    • Pro-Met says:

This team ust be taken apart. Together they are losers. No “Killer Instinct” with theis group of players. Of course the bullpen had major holes but the offense seldom left them any room for error as they don’t know how to put their foot on the oppositions throat and crush them. They are too nicey, nice.
Leo Durocher said it this way ” Nice Guys finish last”. I would add they never make the play-offs.
David Wright is the Mets A-Rod and must be shopped while his value is high. Feliciano, Heilman, Schoenweiss, Sanchez MUST GO – MUST GO – MUST GO.
The Marlins come in, talk trash to the Mets and act like they are going for the pay-offs While the Mets show up with their hats in their hands hoping their starter will shut down the opposition so they won’t need any clutch hits. I could go on but I think everyone knows where I am coming from

        • kd bart says:

So, you were proud of how the Phillies performed last season when they were steamrolled by the Rockies like they weren’t even there? I know I wouldn’t be proud of that postseason showing. Then again in Philly, they’re just happy to make the postseason. One championship in 130 years will do that.

        • Octoberfest911 says:

          yea…

    WANTED FOR 2009:

    LEADERSHIP

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

      Leadership wasn’t overcoming that BP.

      • Furioso says:

        3 runs in 5 games

        Yeah, it absolutely could’ve

        • rustyjr says:

maybe we can convince keith to be a reliever??

        • MetsFan4Decades says:

Even if that was true, they were going no where in post season with that BP. You can’t expect the offense to consistently score double the runs of the opposing team just to stay in the game.

Let’s put the blame where it squarely belongs.

        • rustyjr says:

yup from wise to wagner nobody escapes the blame in our bp

        • kd bart says:

I didn’t expect them to go far in the postseason. Pitching and especially bullpens dominate in the postseason. Look back to the 1990 Reds. They swept the A’s, who were a better team on paper, because they reduced it to a six inning game each night. If the Reds had the lead, the game was basically over. Charlton, Dribble and Myers were just that good that season.

  144. nyj0126 says:

Let the Phillies have their moment – again. Who cares? We all know no team in the NL East in the last two years was or has been capable of making any noise. Philly got swept last year and the Mets would have too.

In the last three years or even longer for that matter, the only team that was built to win were the Mets of 06′. And that team was long ago. It gave this team a false sense of being overly proud. We’re just a team like anyone else. A good team that’s had these experiences that can still help us in the future.

    • kd bart says:

That team won because the bullpen was good that season. Sanchez until the accident was dynamite in the 8th and Heilman was reliable in the 7th. Hell, even guys like Bradford, Oliver and Roberto Hernandez excelled in their roles. The bullpen the last two seasons has been their Achilles Heel. More so this season then last. In 2007, the starting pitching also collapsed at the end. Remember Glavine’s last three starts. This season, the starters held up better at the end.

      • MetsFan4Decades says:

‘That team won because the bullpen was good that season. ‘

Yes. It’s what I’ve been saying all along. This BP sux. Period. Give us back half the blown BP games, hell half of Santana’s blown games and we win the division.

The fault is not the offense. Not with the core guys having all over 105 RBIs.

        • kd bart says:

At least 12 games lost when they had a lead in the 8th or 9th. 6 games lost when they led by 4+ runs at some point in the game. It is easier to win 3-2 then 7-6. Put it this way, the Phillies won 3 games over the Marlins and Braves last week by one run in which their bullpen only allowed 2 runs over 10 1/3 innings. Meanwhile, the Mets lost 3 games to the Braves in which they lead and their bullpen gave up 3 runs in the eighth to lose, 4 in the eighth to lose and 5 in the ninth to lose.

  145. imtiredofguiseppefranco says:

keith is about to lose it

  146. khmustache says:

yankee stadium opens and closes with a win

shea stadium opens and closes with a loss….typical

  147. nyj0126 says:

I’ve spoken to so many Phillies fans even during when they got hot who told me this isn’t their year. They’re so excited about the Eagles.

Look at Kyle Kendrick’s numbers in like his last 5 or so starts? What does he have like a 9.17 ERA? Look at Brett Myers last two starts. Outside of Cole Hamels, it’s not going to be easy for them. They’re very lucky to have Lidge, but like he hasn’t lost his composure in the playoffs? He nearly blew it yesterday. His slider is not as dominating. And the Brewers are red hot and Sabathia’s just as dominating as Santana.

    • rustyjr says:

the fils eliminated in the first round thats my prediction!

    • Octoberfest911 says:

      Kenrick??
Dont comment if you dont know what ur talking about…
he will not see an inning in the playoffs. (you guys no what they are right)
All we have is Hammels? Really? Santana had how many wins… Moyer is 45 years old and had 16 wins.
Hey, solid job there. Money well spent on Santana. At least he got you to the playoffs. Oh wait!!

  148. nastyslider says:

WAIT IM CONFUSED TO THE PHILLIES PLAY THE CUBS OR THE BREWERS?

  149. Furioso says:

    To sum up……….

    What a terrible season.

They collapsed again. Not as badly as last year, but still pretty badly.

    There’s no reason to believe.

    Break up this core.

    F**k the team.

Matt and Co: Thanks for a good season from you guys. At least someone affiliated with the team cane through ion 2008

    • rustyjr says:

look on the bright side we didn’t really collapse we came back from a big deficit band took the lead albeit for a short time only to loose it in the end

      • Gina says:

This is true, but no one, mostly because of the media, is going to think about it that way.

      • nyj0126 says:

Don’t be a lovable loser. Be a fan who’s disappointed. This team lost all on their own shoulders. They lost 8-6 to the Phillies on a day when they were winning 5-2 in the ninth – separating two games in the standing. Interestingl enough, that propelled a 10 game winning streak that really got us back into the whole thing. Had we won that game which didn’t seem to be much all that challenging, than things may look different.

That Monday make up game against the Pirates at Shea after the Pirates loss Nady and Bay in trades and has a disaster of a road trip … the Mets lose. After being up 5-2 in the seventh. Aaron Heilman was deemed the ”closer” and winded up blowing the game being on top 5-4 in the 9th inning. That was a punch in the stomach loss.

Wait, it doesn’t end. The 7-0 lead with Pedro on the mound at Citizens bank park that went 13 innings when we didn’t score for 9 consecutive innings?

Just look at those two Mets-Phillies loss. It separates 4 games in the standings. Had they won one of those two, they wouldn’t be in this boat. Had the won one of those two and won that game as the horrible Pirates, they’d be tied. This is why we loss the division. The bullpen. No one else. Not David Wright. Guy’s like Johan and Delgado were heroic in my mind.

        • FrankyJay says:

          TOTALLY AGREED
Santana only lost 7 games that he leaves leading in the 7th or 8th.

        • kd bart says:

Too many games that should’ve been put away victories that were thrown away by the bullpen. That 7-0 game in Philly and that game against the Pirates when the Pirates didn’t want to be there are just two examples. That last Sunday home game against the Braves is another.

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

HAHAHAHA – you actually LIKE something affiliated with the NY Mets? I’m amazed.

See you next year, my friend.

    • nyj0126 says:

Break up the leadership – not the core. If you trade Johan, Pelfrey, Wright, Reyes, Beltran or Delgado, you really give no one a reason to watch this team. Even if they were sub .500.

I do give credit to Matt and those on this web-site for being here all year. They’ve provided us great information. They’ve allowed us to speak our minds here, even if they’ve let Phillies trolls on. They’ve been here all year just like us and they’ll be here next year. Probably not just because it’s a job either.

how could you confuse your team winning the division with the mets collapse? some fan.

      • nastyslider says:

that still doesn’t explain how you guys haven’t won anything in the postseason in the last 15 years. At least the Mets made it to the playoffs in 1999 and 2000 made it to the WS in 2000 and made it to the NLCS in 2006. You guys have yet to do any of that. One measly championship in 1980 is all you have.

        • Octoberfest911 says:

we had a pretty big collapse as well…
          it was in like 1920…

        • nastyslider says:

what is that even supposed to mean? I said that your team hasn’t won anything significant since 1980 and all your team has to show is a collapse from the mets and 1 division title. Good luck in October you’ll need it with your rotation. lol

        • kd bart says:

Even Cub fans are realistic. Winning the division two years in a row means nothing if you don’t at least make it to the WS. The Braves won 14 Divisions in a row and only won one WS. The Marlins won zero and won 2 WSs. I’m sure the Braves would trade some of their Division Championships for a couple of WSs.

  155. InTermsOfWhat says:

the bullpen hasn’t pitched well since they didnt resign Bradford

  156. LL says:

This really sux bad. But for some reason I am not going ballistic over here. I’m not totally depressed. I have not lost my mind. Maybe because it’s not surprising, with what we went through last year. Maybe because of our rough start.

But this all started with Duaner and the taxi cab incident in Miami. We lost our 8th inning setup guy because of that and Xavier Nady, a very consistently hitting above average RF with pop that provided balance in the lineup good production and protection out of the 6 spot. That incident is still haunting the Mets today.

Changes will definitely be made for next year. The obvious one being the bullpen. Minaya will work well for this team. He will get what we need.

    New era next year!

    • rustyjr says:

Yeah but we’ll be in the same spot if we don’t improve the bullpen.

True. But still, those two are both incredible…We wouldn’t need a bullpen 2 out of 5 starts.

We need a BP – and CC would be nice but don’t see us getting him.

October… Jamie Moyer’s not a bad pitcher. He’ll probably wind up retiring at the year anyway. He’s done alright. The Mets have a lot of their pitchers good supports – at times. Some more times than others. As the same goes with the Phillies. They’ve had their droughts. Cole could have had more wins, right? The reason why Jamie had 16 wins was because his bullpen held his wins. Brad Lidge. There’s your answer.

Johan on 20 other teams was a 20 game pitcher. Talk to baseball fans all over the country and world and see if they disagree. By the way, next time spell your ace’s name before you expect anyone to regard you with any intelligence.

    • kd bart says:

Look at three games the Phillies won at Atlanta and Florida in the next to last week of the season. All were one run victories in which the Phillies only scored 3 to 5 runs and added few tack on runs late. The bullpen just came in and shut the opposition down late to preserve the victory. The difference in the two bullpens was the difference in the season. I beleive the Phils only blew 12 saves all season. The Mets blew 29.

    -Burnett in rotation
    -Murphy at 2nd
-Get a true left fielder who can hit in clutch
-get TWO closers and have one setup
-and get all brand new relievers except smith

    5 things

    • Gina says:

-Burnett likely won’t hit the market.
-We don’t know if Murphy can play second yet
-There’s only 3 left fielders like that on the market, Dunn, Ramirez and Burrel, I think Burrel is a left fielder.
-K-rod and Fuentes? that would make getting starters and powers bats kind of hard.
-something similar to this probably needs to happen but idk about the reliever market

    • nyj0126 says:

I agree with many of your points, but some of them are just not going to happen.

One – Burnett in the rotation is unlikely for a couple reasons. One, he’s in the AL East. Another AL East team who knows he’s done well against them will bite quicker than the Mets. I see the Jays giving him the money. Before this season, he only averaged 23 starts in 06′ and 07′. He’s injury prone. The Mets would also lose draft picks by signing him, even if they just replaced the ones they’d be getting back for Ollie.

The main reason why Burnett won’t become a Met is because the Mets like Ollie. And Ollie has done well in NY. I can’t say for certain whether or not Ollie likes it enough to be here, but if they show him the money I’m sure they can convince him. With that being said, he’ll cost less than Burnett. Not to mention he’s lefty, younger and much healthier.

Sabathia is highly unlikely too. I don’t see this happening. The best and most realistic thing the Mets can and probably will do is re-sign Oliver Perez and get John Maine back healthy next year. I’d consider the possibility of signing Kyle Lohse too to expand the depth so Parnell and Niese aren’t rushed either.

    • XbLaDe31 says:

BURNETT ISNT A FREE AGENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He can become one but the Jays are trying to throw more money on his current contract for him not opt out. Jezz we are starting to sound like yankee fans saying sign this person sign this person and without knowing that the person cant be signed…..

      • Gina says:

Lets sign Pujols and Big Papi.

        • XbLaDe31 says:

I know right then we would have no worries then and we can also sign Matt Holiday, and Derek Jeter for second base and then it WS or bust…….LMAO

      • nyj0126 says:

This is just another reason. This is why it’s unlikely he’ll end up here. I’d like him, just like I’d like Lowe and a bunch of other pitchers – but let’s try to keep things in perspective. A staff of Johan, Pelfrey, Perez, Maine and a half-way decent FA or an eventually developed Niese or Parnell is a solid rotation.

    • nyj0126 says:

Two – Daniel Murphy at second is definitely a legitimate possibility. If the Mets are wise, they’ll allow him to play second base in the winter and see what he’s made of. If he’s able to play 2B, this will solve so many of the concerns for the Mets.

      A) There won’t be a revolving door just to find ways to get him in the line up. Daniel Murphy is the perfect 2 hitter. He takes pitches, hits for average, goes the other way and is a smart ball player. There are things he can work on such as bunting though.

      B) They won’t need to use a lot of money on signing saying Orlando Hudson who is injury prone. They won’t need to depend on Luis Castillo. It’ll alleviate the necessity of re-signing Damion Easley who may just retire. If Murphy’s able to handle 2B, I see Argenis Reyes as a solid back up to him. Even if it means eating a lot of it, I’d trade Castillo. Or buy him out. What ever it takes. There’s no reason for him to be here anymore.

      • wethreekings says:

I’m also intrigued by Ramon Martinez as a backup. If D-Rex doesn’t work out in the infield for us, then fine. Let’s trade for a big gun. Rickie Weeks, Dan Uggla, Kelly Johnson, and Brian Roberts are all available.

      • nyj0126 says:

Of course in the event he is not able to handle 2B, he still is a very useful Met. It’ll be more confusing though. For one, he won’t be an outfielder on this team probably any more than next year. The reason why is Fernando Martinez is in the wings and Beltran/Church are not going anywhere.

If he isn’t capable of handling 2B, the most logical answer would be 1B. He could develop a solid platoon with Nick Evans in 2010 there when it’s likely Delgado may not be a Met anymore. If Murphy doesn’t turn out to be a 2B though, it’d be most beneficial if the development of F-Mart coincided with the departure of Delgado.

Another question is where will Nick Evans be. If Murphy’s out there, I see him platooning with him. I wouldn’t be as confident with using Angel Pagan in LF. If Murphy is the 2B, than you have to sign a LF. And if Murphy is the LF, than you have to sign for a 2B. Outside of the pricey Hudson, more of what’s on the 2B free agent market is older (Kent, Grudzielanek, Durham). To throw a lot of money at Hudson is throwing a lot of money at the 2B position which I doubt they’re willing to do again. So Murphy as a 2B solves that problem.

        • wethreekings says:

Murph will hopefully be at second. Left field might be the result of a trade. Matt Holliday, here we come! Haha…

      • nyj0126 says:

I’d also re-sign Ramon Martinez to a minor league deal to let him compete with Argenis Reyes for the back up middle IF position.

    • nyj0126 says:

Murphy did hit in the clutch. He got a triple the other night with no one out to start the inning and Wright, Church and Castro all were unable to even get a sac fly. Offense isn’t the problem. Clutch is, but the numbers aren’t. If the dynamic of the Mets offense doesn’t change, than they can camouflage who ever it is into their hotness or coldness.

The numbers speak for themselves. Look at Wright, Delgado, Beltran and Reyes numbers and tell me they aren’t great. Mix that in with a healthy Church? We have five solid positions. The one obvious weakness in the Mets line up is the catcher, but most line ups have this problem or at last this at one spot. The Mets got to the 2000 World Series with Ordonez as their SS. Schneider’s very good defensively.

So C, 1B, SS, 3B, CF, RF are settled. It’s 2B and LF that are the question and Murphy fills at least one of those two spots. If it’s LF, you got Murphy against righty’s, Evans against lefty’s and occasionally Angel Pagan who’s a switch hitter in there.
If he’s at 2B though, there are guys out on the market in LF. Thinking Manny is unrealistic. I’d prefer they don’t re-sign Tatis, but it’s a possibility.

      • wethreekings says:

Schneider is overrated defensively. I’d much rather have someone like Kelly Shoppach, Gerald Laird, or Miguel Monetero. But yeah, that’s not our main concern.
Your right on about Murph. Hopefully, he’ll play 2B. Then, we could do something like trade for Holliday, Magglio, or sign Dunn.

      • nyj0126 says:

I meant to say the NLCS in 99′ or in 2000 with Bordick/Abbott.

    • nyj0126 says:

Four – Sign two closers? At two closers price? We can’t afford that. You’re talking about K-Rod is going to be around 14MM and Fuentes is around 8MM. Trade for Huston Street? It’ll cost a lot of prospects – possibly Fernando Martinez. The idea is to sign one closer. Signing K-Rod is our best option. Signing and/or trading for other relievers, along with moving Show, Heilman and Sanchez is the best option we got.

      • wethreekings says:

Very true. Why would we need two closers if we have K-Rod. Backup plans, though, are a good idea. Street is the logical next best option. However, Fuentes, Sherrill, and Putz are also options I think.

Omar Minaya went out and got Pedro, Beltran, Santana, the BIGGEST free agents 3 of the last 4 years, backed up the truck for each of them…and got nothing to show for it. And Omar does nothing for your bullpen, gives Luis “I have no knees” Castillo a 4 year contract…………and what do the Mutts and Fred Coupon do? They give Omar a 4 year contract. And STILL have nothing to show for it. Meanwhile Carlos Gomez and the gritty Twins are on the verge of making the playoffs, WITHOUT your multi-million dollar boy……

And now you want MORE FREE AGENTS??? LOL…..I thought getting Santana was going to solve your problems? Or was it Pedro? I bet you’re going to go for Delgado’s option too eh?

Keep spending that money Mutts, while real teams are in the playoffs….

You sum up the fan based knowledge of your average Philly fan.

Oh, and hey, maybe you can actually win a post season game this year.

    • nyj0126 says:

And the Phillies don’t spend a lot of money? Lots more than Tampa Bay and Minnesota who show a lot more grit than the Phillies. You can’t deny a major reason why the Phillies didn’t win the NL East (Wild Card is another story) is because of the Mets incompetent bullpen. It’s no excuse though. It is what it is and I tip my hat to the Phillies even though I doubt they or anyone except for the Cubs has a shot to win the world series in the NLCS. Please do us a favor though. Come on here if the Phillies lose the NLDS – especially if it’s a sweep. I respect you much more than other Phillies fans so I’d expect that you may actually do this, but other Phillies fans or rather bandwagoners or ”anti-Mets” people won’t.

    • Carlos_Voltron says:

Man, I wish I can get a First Baseman for $8M next season that hit .271 38HR and 115RBI. Oh Delgado!
Who wouldn’t pick up that option?

Philthies Phans don’t know better. I ran into one down at CBP that didn’t know the Marlins won two World Series.

  185. darknova says:

Well, now we just have to wait and see what Omar does in the offseason. I saw this end coming, but am still devastated by it. Being a fan of this club for 18 years now, I’m definitely used to disappointment, but this will still take a while to get over, especially after last year.

    Let’s go KAZMIR!!

  186. sja says:

Today was not fun, but are any of us really surprised? Could be that Duaner’s car accident in 2006 changed the trajectory of this team the last two and one-half years. The bullpen has not been right since then, and Omar’s moves to fix it have not worked. A functional bullpen and the Mets win 2006, 2007, and this year. What’s functional? You cannot blow 29 save opportunities and convert only 60% of save opportunities and expect to get into the post-season. Easy to blame the offense this week, but if 8 of those blown saves get converted, the Mets win the division by one game.

Omar seems good at the big trade or signing, but we all know you need to put a whole team together. Wright, Reyes, Delgado and Beltran played 159 games each, had good seasons and the team still could not win. Why? They needed some help and did not get it all year. The team went almost the whole year with little production from one corner outfield, catcher, and 2B – three spots in the line-up which produced almost nothing offensively.

Omar left the team to flounder by not addressing the holes at the corner OF positions and leaving the bullpen problem to fester. As for 2B, I still can’t belive he let Keppinger go because he thought Anderson Hernandez was going to be the future 2B.

Moving forward, I would consider carefully signing K-Rod – he could be an injury waiting to happen. The better value is Soria. A trade for Soria and DeJesus (check out his average with RISP) should be a front burner item – I would trade F-Mart, Kunz, Heilman, and Schoeneweis to get that done.

I would not re-sign Perez – he is a mediocre pitcher at best and paying $15 million for him when you could get Sabathia for a bit more seems crazy to me. The rotation will be ok with Santana, Maine, Pelfrey, Niese and Pedro as the fifth starter. Niese looks promising and Pedro should be fine as the fifth, although I would look hard at Sabathia if Maine isn’t healthy.

I like the idea from an earlier post of trying Murphy at 2B, although that has the potential to be a Gregg Jeffries experiment..The best news from this season has been the young talent emerging – Murphy, Pelfrey, and Evans, with Niese a potential positive addition. If Murphy can’t play 2B, let Argenis Reyes play – he earned it earlier in the year.

We are going to need a hitting catcher – the Mets are getting no production from that spot. I would go hard after Ryan Doumit from Pittsburgh. And can we get someone who can call a game? Was I the only one wondering if the Mets catchers ever looked at the scouting reports before the games?

Next year I would like to see the following roster:

Delgado, Murphy, J. Reyes, Wright, DeJesus, Beltran, Church, Doumit

Evans, Easley, Tatis, Chavez, Schneider, A. Reyes

    Santana, Pelfrey, Maine, Niese, Pedro

Soria, J. Smith, and four guys NOT named Heilman, Schoeneweis, Ayala, Sanchez, or Feliciano.

    • darknova says:

I really like your idea about Soria, but I really think Pedro is done. Let some other team take a chance with him. I’d like to see:

      Santana, Sabathia, Pelfrey, Maine, Niese/Knight/Figgy

Also, I’d still like to try to get Kunz developed for the big league closing role. I really like the thought of getting a home grown closer in there.

      • sja says:

Kunz is a couple of years from being ready, if not longer; he was very un-impressive in his one appearance. As a 5th starter Pedro is ok – but he is clearly not the main guy anymor e

    • Gina says:

DeJesus isn’t arbitration eligible for like 2 years as far as I know, it’s going to take a very good package to get him, if nothing else it’s probably going to involve Niese.

Also, IMO that’s a pretty poor rotation. I love Pedro, but he should not be a met next season.

      • sja says:

Reasonable comment about the rotation, which means throwing bucks after Sabathia. As for DeJeus, how about Kunz, Church, Heilman, Sco and Omar?

      • nyj0126 says:

They aren’t trading DeJesus. Not until he enters the Beltran point which will be when he demands money. He’s no where near that point. And Soria is signed through so I don’t see why they’d trade him. Why would they do that? So they have random guys like Octavio Dotel and Mike MacDougal closing out there games? The Royals are a young bunch with potential. They just never get it together. They’re in a really competitive division. If the Rays can get it together at some point, anyone can.

    • kd bart says:

Another thing to remember about 2006 besides the bullpen is the production Valentin gave them at second. Haven’t had anything close to that since. Second was a virtual black hole offensively this season.

      • nyj0126 says:

Damion Easley did give us a little, but not enough. Not anywhere near us enough as a solid 2B could have. And Luis Castillo did well in the second half of 07′. His double knee surgery should have indicated to Omar not to re-sign him though.

Fernando Tatis gave us similar numbers to Ryan Church in the same amount of time he played. We still could have used more, but no one can deny that Tatis came up big in a lot of clutch situations. The problem is the lack of consistency, but when we needed to plug a gap we had someone. If we had no production, we’d be at or below .500. Look at the Mets offensive numbers. No one can tell me even with the Mets inconsistent offense that they didn’t get it done.

We lost because of the bullpen. Everyone stop dodging it. We were very lucky throughout the entire year with our offense. If we had won the Wild Card, more people would have spoken about the depth and luck we had with guy’s like Tatis, Murphy (non-production?), Evans and even Pagan in April.

We lost because of the bullpen – end of story. If they only screwed up half the amount of time, we’d have the same record as the Cubs.

    • nyj0126 says:

Re-signing Pedro Martinez would be one of the most reckless things this team can do. We need to move on from older players. We need to re-build with youth. You know this. If Oliver cost 15 million, I wouldn’t sign him. However, if it were say 11 or 12 million – why not? This is the going rate for an average pitcher now. And because of his low win total because of the Mets incompetent bullpen, his price will likely remain in that range even though he’s young, lefty and healthy.

  187. backinbusiness says:

None of us are in the clubhouse, so how could we know.

But it is impossible for me to imagine how a team can succeed when 1/2 the guys absolutely cannot trust each other.

Beltran said it just a couple weeks ago, something along the lines of “I know the BP is trying, but it is hard to believe this keeps happening.”

    Exactly.

You go out there today and tie up the score and in 10 minutes 2 of these loser have given up home runs.

It is not possible to win when half your team has given you absolutely no reason to trust them.

    • Gland says:

Did anyone else see the interviews after the ceremony? Beltran pretty much put it on the bullpen, saying it needed to be overhauled but that position players were fine.

    • nyj0126 says:

Even the bullpen doesn’t trust themselves. It’s a situation that needs to be confronted. And to know people in the clubhouse are upset means they do care. And it means they indirectly are saying to Omar get it done. And if he doesn’t, it’ll eventually be him who goes. I just hope it doesn’t take as long as Isiah Thomas.

      • nyj0126 says:

3 1/2 with 17 to go in the NL East. At the time, Philadelphia has 16 to go. At this same time, the Mets had an equivalent record to Milwaukee. Let’s fast foward to 9 games later.

2 1/2 with 8 to go in the NL Wild Card. At the time, Milwaukee has 7 to go.

The Mets went 7-10 in their last 17. In between game 17 through game 8, the Mets went 4-5. And than they ended 3-5 in their last 8 so you could tell not much changed. They went back to the pre-July mediocrity form mixed with a mess of a bullpen. That first stretch included that 2-2 split with the Nationals and going 2-3 against the Braves – in which 2 losses were blown saves. Both in the 9th inning. On that Sunday last week, the Mets blew another game in the 8th.

The difference weren’t in those 10 games. For as sad as it sounds, the Mets actually gained 2 1/2 on the Brewers by just going 4-5 because the Brewers went 1-8. So the whole fact they were up 2 1/2 games with 7 to go even after going 4-6 was as big of a gift as they were going to receive.

Now you’re up 2 1/2 games with 8 to go. And the Brewers wind up going 6-1. That means with 8 games to go – you need to go 5-3 to win. Something the Mets have done before. Or 4-4 just to tie. Something that we were in position to achieve twice when the Mets had runners on 3rd with 0 outs in the 9th inning, not to mention two out of three other innings with runner on third with no outs with no run scored. That and a Deja Vu 4-2 Sunday 8th inning meltdown.

There was something psychological in this team. The mind set was that we’ll play down no matter what happens. If the Brewers only won 89, the Mets would have only won 88. This team let us down and it’s upsetting to know they’re willing to remain the same GM, manger, pitcher coach and others – but what are we going to do?

Did anyone call the Patriots loss in the Super Bowl a choke? They were expected to win, but they didn’t.

Only 2 legit choke jobs I can think of in baseball.

      2004: ALCS

Well, here we are and its time for Omar to answer to all of us for the 2nd season of gut-wrenching disappointment. And speaking of Omar, where has been all weekend? No statement, no interviews…just like the team he put together…GUTLESS! How can the Wilpons even think of giving this man an extension?!?!?

Secondly, that ‘pen needs to be revamped. Bye Heilman, Schoe, Feliciano, Sanchez, etc. I would consider bringing back Ayala, but not as the closer. Stokes stays, Smith stays. We need to go get K-Rod. Why not…everyone hates us as is…what are a few more fist pumps.

Thirdly, we need arrange a search party for David Wright’s balls. The guy completely wilted under pressure. All the face time and politically correct quotes did nothing for him. Man up and do something in a big spot.

The Carloses…I was wrong about you guys. Delgado, that was an unbelievable turnaround. Here is your reward…we pick up your option and you get to suffer with us one more year. Beltran, 2006 is not forgotten, but you are taking the right steps to redeeming yourself. Way to try to will this team to the playoffs.

Daniel Murphy, go to AZ and work on your second base defense. Castillo go enjoy your money somewhere else, but I think (and hope) that you have put on that Mets jersey for a last time. Easley should get a contract just based on versatility. He becomes next year’s Marlon Anderson. I don’t know if you think about bringing back Ramon Martinez.

We need to get 1 reliable, power-hitting corner OF. I throw my hat into the Manny ring, but I don’t know if he’ s coming here. In the meantime, Church, rest up, shake it off and come back strong next year.

The rotation needs to be Santana, Pelfrey, Maine, ???, ???. After the last 2 outings, I can’t imagine Perez demanding/requiring that much, but who knows. But I make him a mid-range offer and see where it goes. I think Neise could be the 5th guy. He’s got good stuff, but is still raw.

As for Jerry, unless there is a total revamp of the club (ie. one of the big 3 are traded), I bring him back. He did as much as he could without a closer, only 3.5 real starters, and numerous injuries.

OK…that being said…LETS GO METS!!! Thank you to all for giving us something to talk about for 10 months out of the year. Thanks for Matt and the staff for keeping us up-to-date (even if we know that some of the reports are skewed by Mets propoganda). And a special thanks to that old dump we call Shea for all those great memories. Sure it was a dump, but it was OUR dump.

Here’s to a new beginning at CitiField…LETS GO METS!!!

    • wethreekings says:

In general good post. Let me comment…
Omar needs to go, fo sho.
Pen must consist of Smith, Parnell, Ayala/Stokes/Feliciano. Those last three are borderline, but if we can deal them for something with any sort of value, they’re gone. Stokes I would like to keep though. K-Rod is a must, and there are plenty of trustworthy bullpen arms on the market. Why not them?
Don’t even think about getting on David for this loss or for the season. Please, don’t ruin an otherwise intelligent post by that idiocy.
Easley should probably not come back. Idk. We’ll see.
Manny is a nice thought, but how about something more realistic? Adam Dunn is underrated in my opinion, and Raul Ibanez is a nice enough player. Plus, trades are always available for Magglio and Holliday.
For pitching, I say see if Burnett resigns with the Jays. If not, GET HIM. I’m serious, that would be one of the top 2 moves we could make. I like Niese as #5, but we could always get someone like Garland or Lowe.
Yeah, Snoop should be back. I like him a lot.

      • NY Cuban says:

I’m not on Wright for the loss, but more for the quote-unquote leadership. Stop thinking you are a “young guy”…those days are over. You ARE the leader, or at least need to be. You need to step up when everyone else is failing…you need to elevate your game when times get rough. Think (ugh) Rollins and Jeter. Be vocal, call someone out once in a while, don’t just sit back and think everything is wonderful. ITS NOT…it hasn’t been for a while. People listen to him more that he thinks.

  194. k-mets says:

    I didn’t read everyones comment.

But it is obivous that the Mets chocked again this year. I would like whole bullpen changed next year expect for Smith. Singing K-rod is not a option. Angels knew that he will be free agent and they overworked him. Additionally, he has a arkward pitching style that can cause future arm problems.

Moreover, the Mets will not spend another 100~140 million dollars on a pitcher. Second base needs to be addressed after this seasons. I would change on the core and 1st base.

Manager Jerry was good but not great. Whether he comes back is iffy for me. Omar in other hand needs to go.

  195. nymschokeartists says:

All I need to say is that the Mets once again provided Philadelphia fans with the joy of seeing the Mets choke. With 10 overpaided players who should be getting paid in cases of tecate. How many mets does it take to make the playoffs? Apparently more then 25. Also, the playoff store called and they are all out of mets. I look forward to seeing how Minaya can screw it up for the next 4 years and have fun signing wagners checks next year.

  196. koosman says:

‘overpaided,’ indeed. Your grasp of the English language is as astounding as your wit, my good man. You have bested us yet again.

  197. Jmiles says:

Say whatever you will about winning but this one is squarly on the bullpen. They blew 30 games-If they would have just blown 20 we would be in the playoffs.I’ve been through many years of The Mets but this bullpen was historic.it could be the worst in major league history and we still got this far.
Beltran showed leadership and clutch this week.Wright was tired
We also played without corner outfielders for 2/3 of the season
We need another big bat and A total dismantling of the bullpen.
This was painful. The bullpen was painful.very painful

  198. knickedge123 says:

fire minaya. why are we even brining him back. he made this team, and this team chokes year after year. its not like this team is championship caliber. this team is a buch of choke artists, led by reyes and wright. wright, who is always taking it hard on himself, if thats the case, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT AND HIT THE S OUTOF THE BALL. way to go out SHEA. yea, shoe way to go. you can go celebrate yom kippur with shawn green now and get a head start.

    • NY Cuban says:

Looks good, but that bullpen might be too expensive to be realistic. I don’t think you can pull off K-Rod, Fuentes AND Street.

      • nastyslider says:

The big question would be Milton Bradley. I think he would really light a fire for this team. He plays with fire and actually gets pissed of when appropriate. I know the bullpen is unrealistic but as long as we get 2 out of the 3 ( K-Rod, Fuentes, or Street) we’ll be in good shape. Fuentes can be used as a lefty specialist at times too.

    • wethreekings says:

There’s no way we get K-Rod, Fuentes, and Street. One, sure. Two, possibly. Three, no way.
Burnett is miles ahead of Lohse and Dempster. Burnett would be great, but Dempster and Lohse are more fallback options.
And I despise the idea of Milton Bradley in a Met uniform.

    • Pedro says:

I actually like this idea, though I dont think its realistic that the Mets get K-rod AND fuentes. Lets just say K-rod. I like the Bradley idea, but as starting pitcher I think the Mets should make a VERY strong push for Derek Lowe. Hes been on top of his game and hopefully wont be as expensive as the Dempsters of the market

hey, your caps key is stuck.

    • Carlos_Voltron says:

No Milton. Mets need guts, not a firecracker. They need another Cliff Floyd type attitude.

I personally want Soria if they can’t get K-Rod. Even though we all know how hard it is to pry people from other teams with a lacking farm system. Maybe KC can take Heilman and turn him into a starter. Can we get Grienke too?

  200. mookie says:

why not take a chance on Ben Sheets. after his injury he shouldn’t cost that much.

    • nastyslider says:

no freaking way. Screw Sheets, the last thing we need is another guy who lives on the DL!

      • Carlos_Voltron says:

Ben Sheets and Orlando Hudson both look good on paper, but are injury prone. The Mets have enough paper tigers already, they need guts.

        • Pro-Met says:

Exactly. Like last year when Ramirez put the note on the Mets locker room “F— the Mets he should have been wearing a baseball for earings.
The Marlins come in trash talking the Mets and no one is even bruhed back from the plate. No, they pat each other on the ackside when they get on base.
MLB may be playing in dresses in the next few years.

  201. Mex_17 says:

    ?WHAT HAPPEN

  203. nyj0126 says:

Whether any of us like it or not, we’ll wind up seeing video’s on this on things like Sports Century for years to come. If it had just been 2007, people would be like let’s compare it to collapses. This is two back-to-back collapses.

They’ll probably try to find a way to interview as many of those who were on the rosters of both the last 17 games in 2007 and 2008. As they’ll talk to the Phillies players of both seasons and inquire – how did you go 13-4? It really is an amazing story.

What can we do to stop this? If we can break losing streaks like we did this year and get hot, isn’t it possible we can overcome this? Something tells me if the Mets got less competitive, so would the Phillies. I don’t know why. I think this team can really use some personnel changes, but I guess we’ll just see what happens.

  204. Philly Fan on Wall St. says:

As a fan of the NL East Champion Phillies, all I can say to a previous poster is, PLEEEASE GET BEN SHEETS…PLEASE

LOL…..cant believe you Mutts fans. Dont you get it by now? You can have an All Star at every position and you STILL wont win jack.

Why do you think the Marlins beat your a&& every year? With 1/5 the payroll? Its not about stars, its about guts. And the Mets have NONE of it. The Marlins were on the top steps of their dugout throughout the game. They know they’re in your heads and they love it. The Mets just look lost.

So keep talking about getting K-Rod, and getting Fuentes, and keep talking about your RISPs and WHIPs and OBPs….none of these beats guts and heart, and the Mets have neither….

    • darknova says:

And when’s the last time your Phils won? Try to win a game in the first round this year, will you?

      • Carlos_Voltron says:

He is right about the guts part though. Other than that he is just another Philties Phan.

        • apagano says:

“Guts” has nothing to do with it. The difference between the Phillies and the Mets in 2008 boils down to two words: Brad Lidge. He was perfect. The Mets bullpen – not so much.

    • nyj0126 says:

Why are you too much of a coward to confront why you’re team hasn’t had the ability to win one playoff game in the last 15 years? We’ve been to a world series. We’ve been to an NLCS. You haven’t even won one game in an NLDS in which you’ve have home field in. Do you honestly believe it’ll be any different this year? If you’re a man, you will show up somewhere on our blog and admit the Phillies are not as good as you thought they were. Or simply a weak team in the playoffs.

See, to the Phillies – just winning the division is the goal. If I were wrong, you wouldn’t sound so satisfied. And if had any character, you wouldn’t lose your ”interest” to come on here when your team doesn’t even get through the NLDS.

Just think about it though. A playoff win. Now that’s intensity. A playoff series win? That’s even bigger. It feels good. You don’t know what it feels like. Mike Hampton gave us more of that in one year than Cole Hamels may be able to in a life time. Just think about that for a second.

Remember – if you’re a man, just come back here in a week or when ever it is. Fair deal?

      • nyj0126 says:

Winning an NL East or an NL Wild Card is not anything. Perhaps it’s better than nothing, but it’s nothing. What counts is a world series. Or getting to the world series.

The Sixers even got that. Did the Phillies any time in this decade? No. Even the Eagles did, right? The Flyers got a lot closer too, right?

So let’s think about all this – the horrendous late 90’s + the early part of this decade? All those 162 game seasons for what? Than what about last season? All that anxiety. All that winning. All that coming back. For what? A parade? And than what? Were there any wins?

So you basically played to live it up during the regular season. Even the Atlanta Braves who were notorious for that won a world series and made it a couple ones, they’ve lost?

I guarantee you the moment when the Mets go down, the Phillies go down. It only took the Miami Heat to go down a year after the Knicks did. A few years later a new Heat era begins. Just think about that. The Mets drive the Phillies. Doesn’t that speak a lack of indpendence in the Phillies infrastructure? Just look at what Jimmy Rollins said.

Jimmy Rollins even called you guys front runners. You don’t think if he has a horrible NLDS and says something smart sooner or later, the Phillies fans won’t lose it again?

  206. apagano says:

“I know many will put this loss on the bullpen and the matchups Jerry Manuel played, but once again the team’s most important players were unable to provide a clutch after the sixth inning.”

It’s the bullpen. Period. This club lost 30 games in the final 3 innings. Yes, there seemed to be a pattern of the offense jumping out to big leads only to fall asleep later, but you really have to pin the vast majority of the blame on the relief pitching. These guys failed to provide clutch PITCHING time and time again. They blew small leads, big leads and everything in between. They blew games after the offense had come from behind. They just didn’t have anyone out there who could get three outs without giving up runs.

If this team had even an AVERAGE bullpen, Manuel would have spent the weekend resting his regulars for a playoff run.

Remember, the CORE of this offense: Reyes, Wright, Beltran and Delgado are the exact same group who came through with late rallies numerous times in 2006. David Wright did everything he could to carry the whole team on his back during last September’s collapse. You can’t pin it on those guys. The failure of the last 2 years can be attributed to Omar Minaya’s failure to construct a bullpen and to build the organizational depth to replace guys who struggled. Losing Billy Wagner to injury – not his fault. Not having anyone better than Luis Ayala and his 5.40 ERA to replace him – was.

    • Pro-Met says:

Scoring 5 runs in the most imporant 27 innings of the season cannot be blamed on the bullpen. That falls on our “pansies” who didn’t hit in the clutch. Golden Boy Wright could have rescued his BP partners if the apple in his throat wasn’t choking him from the 6th to th 9th inning of every game.
If the Mets are going to do anything in 2009 they need to break up this”core” of losers and Wright might bring in a decent starter or reliever.
Give me a Pete Rose, Eddy Stanky tpye player over this bunch any day of the week.

      • wethreekings says:

        You is dumb.

      • DavidDog says:

        agreed, see below

      • apagano says:

You’re right, the bullpen is not at fault for scoring 5 runs in the final 3 games. My point is that the baseball season is 162 games, not 3. The Mets scored plenty of runs this season (2nd in the NL). Wright, Reyes, Beltran and Delgado did all they could. Santana was brilliant and Pelfrey finally lived up to the hype. This team wasn’t killed by Wright and Reyes in September. It was killed by Heilman, Sanchez, Schoenweis, Feliciano , Wagner and the like all year long.

Hey Nichols…the Mets lost and YOU still can’t write worth a damn….

dismantle this undescribable bunch of choking losers! tear it apart like the stadium! heartless,?i dont know, i guess they were trying, and i’m sure that their lucullian buffet or fancy dinner is tasting a little bitter tonight. gutless? for sure! They ruined a season and found away to ruin what the should have been a memorable celebration. What a way to completely f-ck up, on all possible fronts. At least the Yankees got their a$$es eliminated well in advance, and closed down their park with a nice win and a nice celebration. The mets closed out like this, with another miserable loss to the laughable marlins on the last day of the season. Once again, they do things right, we not only do things wrong- we do things worse than the most perverse hooror writer could envision. This team don’t deserve a shiny new ballpark, they should learn what it feels like to earn just enough for utilities, food and gas while doing something other than live the life and play around with a little ball. I’m not even gonna single out anyone (an excre-mental bullpen, a bunch of si$$y balless hitters). “You lose as a unit” eh Wright? Well tear up this pathetic unit thoroughly, don’t let it bring its stench of undescribable failure (which this ‘unit’ will never get off itself) to the new park. Last year, at least, they gave their spot to a truly fighting (albeit grossly inferior) philly team. This year (granted, they should have still taken the division..) they managed to give it to a team who’s tendency to choke and implode would have become legendary in its own right, if it wasn’t trumped by the masters… This team will never win. because 1) they’re proven, documented losers, 2) what they’ve done would only keep haunting them, in a perennial vicious circle of loserness. If you disagree then u really have too many stat sheets up ur a$$ and dont understand a thing about playing sports. it’s like a champion boxer who’s been knocked out bad, he may further perfect his technique, get into even better shape, but he’ll never be the same fighter again. And by the way I apologize for even remotely likening these tender, mediocre performers to fighters… DISMANTLE. COMPLETELY. I dont care if it means three years before we’re anywhere near competing (those three years couldnt possibly be as miserable as the last two). Also, a couple days ago I timidly defended Omar (I figured I’d be positive about him, since he’s already signed…), and now I hear that the first thing he said is “he’ll recommend to the Wilpons keeping Manuel”. ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? Nothing personal, but not even if it’s as a janitor. Mark my words, whenever the Mets let him go (hopefully tomorrow) the man will certainly never get another managerial position in MLB again (as he hadnt for the past 8 years). heck, even that division 3 college team might revoke its offer.. And I wont even get into the specifics of why I think that (especially the past month, and especially with the pitchers) he did the worst managing job I’ve ever seen. A collapse like this should suffice under any circumstance. And with all the bad karma of “history repeating itself” we’ve just witnessed and keep talking about, after re-signing willie last year you’re now gonna re-sign this incompetent schmuck (who happened to be Willie’s bench coach) ??? Please Wilpons, please. Dismantle this core, this culture of unspeakable failure, and, yes, BRING BACK BOBBY V!
