John Maine will have surgery today to remove a bone spur on his right shoulder.
Speaking with reporters yesterday from Shea Stadium, Maine said he will be 100 percent by spring training.
…from what i have been told, the reason for concern here isn’t the surgery or the bone spur, but the fact that he got the bone spur in the first place, which suggests he could have weak ligaments, which could lead to other more-serious injuries down the line…
Maine, on the end of the season, while speaking to reporters yesterday from Shea Stadium:
“It’s tough. I think, obviously, last year was a tough let down and this is too, but, you know, it’s tough…For the most part, I think the core group is good. But, changes are not my area, I don’t know…It was tough just sitting down there watching, knowing there was nothing I could do. You know, I don’t know…I mean, I missed six weeks, seven weeks, I feel like maybe if I had been pitching I could have made up two games and maybe we get in right there.”
Maine finished the season 10–8 with a 4.18 ERA, while striking out 122 hitters in 140 innings pitched.
Prior to being put on the disabled list, Maine had been on pace to win 13 games – two less than he won in 2007.

Maine will be a starter next year.
no $hit
lol you would think mrose…wait and see how many met fans want him in the bullpen next year or close..but i guess that would come at no surprise on this site…
As metsblog has become more popular, I find it more beneficial to my mental well being if I just focus on the articles and not on the comments section.
But God help me, I just can’t help but rubberneck sometimes.
tell me about it x…geez……..
i do have to agree…i have no idea why i go into this
I mean, there is no choice but to put him in the starting rotation if he is healthy…
yes we need a closer, but we also need capable pitchers to GET to said closer
Also, John has said time and time again his preference is starting…lets not have another Aaron Heilman situation
exactly mrose…..he holds more value to us in the rotation. We can fix the bullpen but we need starters and when hes on…hes on.
I’d have to agree with you guys. The worst part is these guys who want to be GMs. These are the same guys that ask to sign people because they do well during fantasy. Let’s leave talking about trades and such up to the professionals…no one wants to hear how you just traded Wright for Halladay/Rolen and Heilman/Castillo for Cliff Lee in MLB 08.
Do what know what Maine at 100% looks like yet? I don’t know if he’s a solid 2 or a solid 4.
Lets call him a solid 3.
Whatever number, he is a solid piece of the rotation. Even with the obvious shortcomings the Mets have as of today, I’m still excited to watch Santana, Pelf, and Maine form the core of our rotation for years to come.
The only way I would be more excited is if Niese can take that next step and we can either resign Perez or Burnett.
Either way, I’m still remaining positive for 2009 (Lets go Mets!), and will relish watching the phils get demolished by the Cubs. I’ll be routing for the Cubs and the Rays in the post season this year since that will make for a very exciting WS.
very good question. i’m not sold on maine as a top of the rotation guy either.
Sorry off topic, but has anyone gotten any info yet regarding a refund for playoff tickets? I had my Saturday plan tickets paid for, as well as additional NLDS game 1 tickets separately, and I haven’t been able to get any info. Thanks.
I think you need to call the Mets ticket office and let them know if you want a refund. Otherwise, they will credit your account towards next season’s tickets.
BTW, have you heard anything about partial season ticket plans for next year? I’m a Tues-Fri tickeholder and all I’ve heard is that they haven’t made any decisions yet.
I like Maine but Maine is what he is.. a number 3 starter for a good rotation…. OMAR call the Astros and ask for OSWALT the most underrated pitcher this decade… Oswalt came into the league in 2001 and has the most wins since than then any pitcher in the Majors… 129wins 64loses 3.13. He has more wins than Johan Santana this decade and Santana came up in 2000. Oswalt also has the second lowest ERA in that time period only behind Johan 3.11 Oswalt 3.13.
Oswalt is an absolute ACE STUD….
Mets get: Oswalt
Houston gets: Maine, Church, Neise, Parnell, A Reyes and change.
That would be an absolute Blockbuster getting Oswalt.
1 2 punch of Santana and Oswalt is just simply AWESOME..
GET IT DONE OMAR………
Santana wasn’t a starter until 2003.
ok first of all i dont think oswalt is by any means underrated.
second…are you crazy….your giving up a #3 guy, a 21yr old good pitch prospect, our RF, someone with a strong fb and a good defensive 2b for 1 PITCHER…..Who the hell would be left to play on our team not to mention the contract you will inherit with oswalt that is probably more than all of those trade pieces put together. What money would you use to improve the 2 remaining spots in the rotation? How would you fix the bullpen? w/e this is a stupid trade proposition.
Maine is our Oswalt. Pelf is our Webb.
I am so happy that this great mind, Minaya, is our GM.
coming off of last year and having looking great during spring training in terms of his stuff. very disappointing year from maine.
that’s not english, but you get the idea :)
Santana, Maine, Pelfrey, Wright, Reyes, Beltran are untouchable.
Thankfully someone isn’t a moron. Good post.
OMAR, DO YOU SEE THIS???? MAKE SURE YOU SEE THIS!! HE IS 100% CORRECT!
i agree with reyes, wright, santana, and beltran but i wouldn’t put maine in that group. i wouldn’t look to trade him, but i’d consider it for the right deal.
holliday and fuentes for maine and evans, for example.
I could see that. Yeah I would consider Maine touchable but not ‘on the block’…
Agree. Everyone mentioned but Maine is untouchable. I would deal Maine in the right deal!
The good thing about this is that next Spring it’s going to feel like we added a #2 pitcher just by Maine being healthy.
Then we add CC, and now you’ve got a rotation. :)
That’d be awesome.
