Health: Santana has Knee Surgery
By Matthew Cerrone - Oct 1, 2008 1:09 pm

The Mets have announced that Johan Santana underwent successful surgery today on his left knee to treat a torn meniscus.

According to the team, Santana had torn his meniscus prior to his final start of the season, but was able to work through the injury.

umm, i’d say

Santana is expected to make a full recovery and be ready for Spring Training.

    Warrior

    • Church says:

I remember early in the year wondering if he was a tough enough guy to go out and throw 7 or 8 innings a clip. I thought him pitching a few complete games was enough. But now I definitely have my answer.

      • napes22 says:

That’s not your answer. He hurt his knee prior to the last start of the season. He’s always been a 7 inning guy with an occasional 8 or complete game. That won’t fix with a repaird meniscis.

    • DerangedHermit says:

Johan Santana should sue Jim Hellwig and claim he’s more of an Ultimate Warrior than Mr. Warrior is.

      • Steviefan84 says:

Which stinks more because he pitched on one good leg only to see the Mets get eliminated.

  2. Nightlife says:

    …..gangsta?

  3. CitizenSnips says:

As long as it’s not his throwing arm.

  4. itsmetsforme says:

    wow!!

has aaron heilman undergone HIS surgery?

  5. shannon says:

Never even had any idea that he was injured. WOW.

  6. Tidewater says:

Just proves what a beast Santana is. We didn’t even know. I have to say, even to his last start, Santana looks easy to hit. He obviously is not. I’m so glad we have him.

  7. backinbusiness says:

    I want to be Johan.

I guess I’ll settle for having him as my ace.

  8. JarvisJanesAddiction says:

    Professional

  9. MeesesGlokmah says:

Woah. That makes his last couple of starts all the more impressive.

  10. He is a beast. We could use another frontline pitcher to take the strain off of him thinking he needs to throw 8 or 9 innings every time out. CC or Halladay would be a nice addition.

    • bittergreen says:

As much as CC was super-impressive this year. I would worry what sort of longevity he’s going to have with those 280 lbs. he’s carrying around.

  11. As long as this keeps him out of the WBC ‘09, I’m happy :-)

    • beltran the warrior says:

great point. something to consider for a lot of these guys. great point.

      • You’ll also be happy to hear that I got into an argument wiht a Phillies fan over who is a better overall player…Beltran, Rollins, or Utley. I took the side of Beltran naturally. However, looking at it objectively, I would have to say Beltran IS the best of the 3. I would even call him better than Howard overall.

        • beltran the warrior says:

i will take beltran in a second. he can win a game with his bat AND save the game in the field not to mention, set up a run with his wheels.

        • I think he is the most complete player. I didn’t say he was the fastest or had the most power. All I said was overall.

        • IMO, the most underappreciated Met in a long time. Probably since Mike Piazza’s first few months.

        • Hubie says:

I would trade Beltran for Howard in a nyc second. Howard is a monster who can carry a line-up for months. Beltran’s defense is great but as we have all seen, his bat can go quiet for long stretches.

        • BullpenHelp says:

There’s not a GM in baseball who would select Carlos Beltran ahead of Chase Utley. We can hate him all we want, but Utley is the best second baseman in all of baseball and it’s not close.

          Let’s not get crazy here.

        • As can Howard’s. Howard was right around the Mendoza line for a long time this year. He is another one of those all or nothing guys that looks phenomenal when he hits home runs, but very bad when he’s striking out.

        • BullpenHelp,

I would take Beltran over Utley any day of the week. Put them both in the same ballpark and the power numbers are the same. Beltran runs better and fields better. Age isn’t an issue. You will also never hear Carlos Beltran cursing out the hosting team’s fans at the All Star Game.

        • beltran the warrior says:

sorry not buying utley. especially when the majority of his production came in the first two months of the season. he was really quiet after june. he was the opposite of delgado.

        • BullpenHelp says:

That’s fine… but like I said, not a GM in baseball would make the same choice as you. Finding comparable skills to Beltran in CF is a lot easier than finding comparable skills to Utley at 2nd. I wouldn’t personally choose any CF in baseball over Beltran, but it’s a lot closer than arguing that there’s someone at 2nd base better than Utley.

        • BullpenHelp says:

Utley has a higher career OPS+ (which neutralizes park factor) and a higher 2008 OPS+. Utley is also a year and a half younger.

Listen… Beltran is awesome. But we shouldn’t let our hatred for the Phils blind us to reality.

        • Reyes es el Rey says:

Agreed B-Help. Utley is the best of those followed by Beltran. Thank God the mook who said he’d trade Beltran for Howard is not our GM.

Unfortunately our GM is still Minaya.

        • Hubie says:

          Hey Joker:

Who carried his team to the postseason 2 straight years and is one of the clutchest hitters in baseball. Not Beltran. Gimme a break. Some of you are morons. Beltran is a very good player, but Howard is a difference maker.

    • Nightlife says:

Oh man, I forgot about that.

I like the idea of the WBC its just near impossible to schedule the damn thing to make everyone happy due to the way the baseball season is set up.

    • OrangeNBlueSince82 says:

I heard Gary Cohen say during a game this season that Johan and other Venezuelan players were going to protest the WBC because they were treated poorly during the first one by their own country.

  12. JeffO says:

If we had 10 Santana’s (for starting pitching and bullpen), 14 Daniel Murphy’s and 1 Jose Reyes, we still be playing games

  13. chmets says:

If the 24 other Mets (or in the case of the expanded roster 39) had half the heart of Santana this team would be prepping for Game 1 right now.

    • DerangedHermit says:

The hell with that, if the 24 other Mets had half the heart of Santana, they wouldn’t have had to worry about a pennant race because they’d be so far in front.

    • patrick says:

I have said it before and I will say it a million more times apparently, if its was easy as heart Scott Schoenwiess could heart himself into being Johan Santana, there is physical skill, physical gifts and mental aptitude that separates good athletes and ball players from the great ones.

  14. Jibes says:

    Bring back CHROJO!

  15. If the Phillies and Brewers didn’t exist, we’d be playing October baseball!

  16. blains2008 says:

Adam Rubin’s log in the Daily News has more info and is worth the read.

All I can say is, “Wow!”

  17. JeffO says:

I read Rubins blog…all the more amazin..

He had a torn meniscus in his LEFT knee, that’s his push off leg.
    Unreal. This guy is Gangsta!!

  18. Mack. Daddy.

That’s it, I’m fully campaigning for his Cy Young Award. The man blew up his own knee and we just couldn’t get him into the playoffs. He needs something shiny for his mantle this year.

    • Steviefan84 says:

Santana should send in his own list of guys he’d want playing behind him, this performance should make the second in charge of this team. lol

  19. mouserdz says:

I’m shocked that this injury was never leaked to the media. Did Johan even tell anyone until after the season? I would actually hope he did, because sometimes these guys can do more damage themselves by hiding injuries. BTW, I’m not implying that Johan may have hurt himself more by playing with the injury, I’m sure he’ll be fine.

  20. casey s. says:

Just all you guys (and those reading, but not commenting) remember this in the years to come when he eventually (hopefully not until year 7 of his contract) falls apart. remember what heart, what skill, what determination this guy has.

He’s my favorite Met, hands down.

    • Steviefan84 says:

Lots of what if’s, what if Santana and the 1st year of pedro would of been like if they pitched together. Would of been a sight.

  21. Nordberg says:

In other news, Heilman has realized he was wearing the bat boys pants the entire year and this may be why he looked so uncomfortable on the mound….stay tuned.

  22. altru426 says:

off topic just for fun, what do you think of a lineup like this? what do you think its missing? flip anyone? different spots? different people? etc.

    Reyes
    Beltran
    Delgado
    Wright
    Church
    Byrnes
    Murphy
    Schnieder
    [Pitcher]

As you can tell, I am trying to repress these last 2 seasons and already go on to ‘09, haha.

    • BBmetsfreak36 says:

We need beltran 110+ RBI’s down more in the order. I’d rather Murphy possibly Church in the 2 hole depending on whos hitting. I don’t want to get ahead of myself but if we get him and i hope we do, against lefties Byrnes could bat behind reyes 2nd.

    • patrick says:

If that is how they choose to play the everyday in 2009 I think that they need to find a better compliment to Schnieder and they better by adding the pitcher they though Pedro might be along with a very new bullpen.

    • Reyes es el Rey says:

I would move Wright in front of Beltran or Delgado. Can’t exactly explain it, but to me he seems like the guy who really needs protection behind him in the order. Beltran can hit anywhere, IMO.

  23. LL says:

I know it sux that we lost and didn’t get into the playoffs. But knowing this now about Santana and his knee, maybe it was for the better that we didn’t get into the playoffs. In reality, how well would we have done with this sorry excuse for a bullpen. I don’t think it would have been good for Santana to continue to pitch with this knee problem in the playoffs.

Sometimes things happen for a better reason we are not aware of. Knowing this, I am somewhat more at ease in my mind about not making the playoffs.

Johan is straight up gangsta though! True leader and gamer!!!

  24. darkstar73 says:

Dan Warthen actually mentioned this to Eddie C on the radio once during the pre-game, and it was before Johan’s infamous start, I think it may have been the day after his start before that one, how they were just worried about his knee a bit and it had been a slight problem for a while, but wasn’t too big of a deal. Either way, surgery means there was a problem, and Johan is all the more a beast for doing what he did.

  25. zen says:

    mr. santana is the warrior

shootin’ at the walls of heartache, bang, bang, I am the warrior.
well I am the warrior, and heart to heart you’ll win…

note to self: never post lyrics to unusual hit songs of the ’80’s

  26. Flushing_is_Burning says:

Didn’t even know he had a injury that required surgery. Johan is truly a great competitor.

  27. uh oh…cole hamels just got out of the first unscathed. go brew crew!

  28. chronique1 says:

Superman owns a pair of Johan Santana pajamas. Beeeeast.

  29. mr_met says:

    true warrior. take that manny

  30. haha…shouldn’t you be watching your phils? or do you already know that you’re going to lose this series? good look beating cc.

  31. Nordberg says:

You forgot the first “H” in you Haha’s, you blithering moron.

  32. blains2008 says:

Rollins just flied out to left with men on 1st and 2nd and nobody out! What a choker!!! Trade him!!! (/sarcasm)

  33. TobeRinkler says:

    toss my salad, suzy homemaker

  34. it’s good for him that the phils are playing right now. i think we all know that will change next week and he’ll be left with the last place eagles. go big blue.
