Yesterday, on WFAN, Mike Francesa said he has been told that Ryan Church ‘hated it here,’ while adding, ‘I know for a fact that he didn’t like the team, he didn’t like the city and he was not a happy guy here.’
However, just five weeks ago, Adam Rubin wrote the following on his blog for Daily News:
“Church revealed that his wife Tina was driven to tears by the standing ovation the Shea faithful gave before his first at-bat (after returning from the disabled list). The hard-nosed Church said the fans’ embrace cemented his desire to spend the rest of his career in Flushing. He’s even open to signing a long-term contract now to wipe away his arbitration years.”
…thanks to Franco S for the link…
Francesa returns to the airwaves today at 1 pm. To listen live, click here. If you’d like to call in to his show and let him know of Church’s comments, call 718-937-6666.
Lastly, speaking of Rubin, he will be running a live chat with readers on his blog today starting at noon.
…Update…1:22 pm…
During today’s chat, Rubin was asked about Francesa’s comments, which he responded by writing, “Ryan Church really enjoyed playing in New York. How do I know? We talked several times during the year about it. Not with a notepad and tape recorder out. Just casual one-on-one conversations, when he talked about how much more he liked New York than Washington.”
…great work, adam…thanks…

lotta things have changed since then…trade him
Apparently someone called Mike at The Fan and said he read that Church loves NY. Now Fat Mike is claiming Church told him HIMSELF that he hated it here. Mike asked the caller where he got his info and the caller said “MetsBlog.com,” whereupon Mike promptly sneered, “An Internet Blog! Who are you going to believe, them or me?”
I sure wish Church would call in the show himself, that would be awesome. Or issue some sort of statement.
‘“An Internet Blog! Who are you going to believe, them or me?”
Well, that’s a no brainer. An no, it ain’t you Mike….
Citing metsblog was a mistake. The caller should have credited the original source, Adam Rubin, which would have cornered Francessa. Telling him you read it on a blog allows him to ridicule you without having to bother verifying the claim. Fight fire with fire guys- fight smart.
hahaha fat boy…you are an idiot (Talking about Francessa obviously)
Lets get Lo Duca back lol
I can’t stand Francessa. Ever notice how he always refers to the Met players by their last names and the Yankees by their first names? Its Derek and Jobba, etc. How many times did he rip David Wright and praise Kevin Youklis? He should stick with the Yankees and shut his big fat mouth. He’s a pompous idiot !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You guys have been way to hard on Church. We all loved him at the beginning of the year and then he went through hell all year. He played hurt with a hip injury lately. I think he can be a terrific RF and should be a building piece
yeah but hes a career .275 hitter….hes not that valuable
You could use a lot better statistics than something as stupid as a career .275 average to gauge his value. Beltran has around the same career average.
Beltran has 3 gold gloves and next year will have 300 homeruns and 300 sb for his career… Church has 47homeruns and they are same age…. Please do not insult Beltran like that… Church isn’t that good or good period….
How exactly was I insulting Beltran?
Or for that matter inferring that Church was as good as Beltran? Its just merely an example of how BA isn’t everything.
Reading comprehension, man.
First of all, Church not only has heart, but he also carried this team in the beginning of the season. He is tough and a competitor. He deserves to be back to prove he can contribute in the long run.
Secondly, if any of you geniuses have actually played sports and experienced a severe concussion (not to mention two within a couple of months), that alone could do you in for a season.
That being said, for all of you wanna be Met GMs’ out there, spare us all of your amature scouting knowledge. I am sure if all of your well thought out analyses actually mattered you would not be posting on metsblog.
yes but one thing we have been saying is we dont need all stars we need guys who can bust their butts every day and give us good enough production to compliment the big guys. if healthy for the whole season church would have been one of those guys.
sorry to double post but to follow what i said look at the cubs who won 97 games with guys like reed johnson, jim edmonds past his prime, mike fontenot, & fukudome. I really think mgmt and our fan base have to realize this is not fantasy baseball and the games are not played on paper.
i thought statistics didnt matter? or is that only when its there to prove your point?
Church’s a keeper. His big downside was that he supposedly couldn’t hit lefties, which he disproved the first 2 months this year. He hits for power, runs well, has baseball smarts, and is alomst Gold Glove caliber.
There are many areas of this team that need an upgrade before you start shopping for a RFer.
I love his defense. He gets a mulligan because of the concussion.
He gets a mulligan because he showed what he can do when healthy, which is produce at a very high level, hustle, and sacrifice his body for a catch
How the heck does the fat man continually get away with spouting fiction disguised as fact on the air?
This isn’t the first time. He just makes up this stuff. And that tripe about “trading the core” was fabricated merely to get under Mets fans’ skins and to try to bash the Mets organization.
Fatcessa is such a lying phony.
I was listening Monday when he was making those claims and it was scary…he was yelling at callers, yelling!…he got in a roar big time at the fact that callers didnt agree with him.
Not only that, his sheer laziness is galling. It’s one thing to come to work at 1pm and start the show with “I think they should trade David Wright, and here are 5 trade proposals. Let’s discuss”. But heaven forbid he ever actually do any homework on anything.
Because he is a sports talk radio host. Those guys are paid to be loud blathering idiots for a few hours daily.
I couldn’t agree more. He was purposely baiting Mets fans. He always thinks he’s right, never lets anyone finish a thought. No wonder the other idiot Russo left. Fat pig!!
the power of christ compels you!
thank you matt
Don’t call him. It just proves that people listen. Wanna shut up the fat man… STOP LISTENING. It’s just that simple.
we need to call…because the only people that do normally dont know what they are saying and give francessa satisfaction that hes right.
the show will put on who they want. shows like that use callers to say things they don’t want to get in trouble for saying so they find the 2 people who hate wright to say he should be traded.
smugcesa is a punk
But he doesn’t care. You have to hit him where it hurts — the ratings. It’s the only way to get a radio or TV station to change it’s ways or personnel. Unless someone can get him to call a group “nappy headed-hos.”
EXACTLY. Do you really think the people making decisions about the franchise care that Francesa is lying? Minaya, Wilpon, Church, and Church’s agent - that’s it. Sports radio is a vehicle for the fans. If you don’t like the show (and I don’t), just don’t listen.
Francesa has lost all credibility when speaking about the Mets. From his insistence on trading Reyes, to his inability to let it go that the Shea attendance is announced larger than what he thinks it is, to this situation with Church.
No way Francessa recants or even addresses his erroneous information. You see the self absorbed, self annointed sports pope is infallible on anything sports related. How dare you question the all knowing pompous one. Do you not know with whom you deal? The conversation with anyone who brings this up will be that some anonymous no name mole within the Mets organization told him that Church was not happy. Facts are useless with this guy and the anonymous source is his alleged cover.
If you are a Met fan, you can’t listen to Francesa at all. He is playing the heel. I don’t think he actually believes what he is saying he is just trying to get you agitated to get ratings. I am not sure what the Mets will do with Ryan, but to say he hated it here sounds pretty false to me after hearing his wife’s story.
I haven’t listened since Russo split. Apparently he is as unbearable as I imagined.
i don’t really see what mets fans or the FO did to tick church off. we didn’t even get on him for his poor performance down the stretch. and he was as adamant about playing through
