Read: Floyd on Mets, OP on Free Agency

by Matthew Cerrone on October 1st, 2008 at 10:17 am

In the New York Post, Mike Puma catches up with Rays DH Cliff Floyd, who says about the Mets, “You can talk about leadership all you want, but they’ve got guys who can play…To have the talent of guys that they have and lose like that, it’s just unfortunate.”

Floyd hit .268 with 11 HR and 39 RBI in 80 games as a designated hitter for the Rays this season.

Also in the New York Post, Dan Martinez talks with free-agent-to-be Oliver Perez, who says, “This is the team that gave me the second opportunity to come back to the majors and I was really happy, but I have to look at everything and see what team gives me the best opportunity to win.”

…was happy…best opportunity to win…ouch

In the Bergen Record, John Rowe dishes out end-of-the-year grades to to each player on the Mets, including an A for Johan Santana and an F for Aaron Heilman.

As long as talk-radio intends to push the idea of trading David Wright or Jose Reyes, David Lennon wonders on his blog for Newsday whether the Yankees should then consider trading Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter.

Lastly, speaking of Wright and Reyes, in the New York Post, Mike Vaccaro explains why the Mets should not trade them, while pulling from history and Gil Hodges in 1955.

Read: Demolishing Shea Stadium

by Matthew Cerrone on October 1st, 2008 at 9:13 am

Shea Stadium will begin being dismantled, section by section, without a wrecking ball, starting in two weeks, according to Mets executive Vice President of Business Operations Dave Howard, in a report by Jim Baumbach for Newsday.

Inversely, Howard notes that the sod will be installed in Citi Field by the end of October, ‘just in time to set in before the winter frost hits.’

Baumbach continues on to list the step by step plan for Shea’s demolition, which, though it will be a slow process, the team hopes will be completed by April of next season.

Buzz: Manny, Catcher and Church hating NY

by Matthew Cerrone on October 1st, 2008 at 8:47 am

According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, in an interview with WFAN yesterday:

Later, the show’s host, Mike Francesa, said he has been told that Ryan Church ‘hated it here,’ while adding, ‘I know for a fact that he didn’t like the team, he didn’t like the city and he was not a happy guy here.’

Heyman said he had not heard that Church ‘hated’ New York, but added, ‘I think the Mets believe that he’s not a fit here, and may be better off some place else.’

before people go bananas ripping church, my advice is to always take francesa’s ‘facts’ with a grain of salt…this is not to say he’s wrong, i just can’t trust that he is fully right…to say, ‘i know for a fact,’ should mean church told francesa this first hand, but somehow i doubt that is how it went down – and if so, since it’s ‘fact,’ why wouldn’t francesa just state his source

i’d be curious to hear what a beat reporter has to say about this, speaking as some one who is in the clubhouse with church

Church is eligible for arbitration each of the next three seasons, and can be a free agent after 2011.
