Shea Stadium will begin being dismantled, section by section, without
a wrecking ball, starting in two weeks, according to Mets executive Vice President of Business Operations Dave Howard, in a report by Jim Baumbach for Newsday.
Inversely, Howard notes that the sod will be installed in Citi Field by the end of October, ‘just in time to set in before the winter frost hits.’
Baumbach continues on to list the step by step plan for Shea’s demolition, which, though it will be a slow process, the team hopes will be completed by April of next season.

Can the bullpen be knocked down too with the wrecking ball?
I thought it was knocked down in May?
No biggle, but the article says “no wrecking ball.”
My 12 year old son is “devastated”. He was really looking forward to Shea getting knocked down by the wrecking ball.
Yea…its a NYC regulation I think.
yep, starz, you are right-it’s a NY law. No imploding, either-I think that was put in after 9/11-would bring back too many bad memories. In addition, imploding the place is impractical with Citi Field so close by-it would get damaged.

Metsblog should have an official section in Citifield. I always like sitting near the bullpen at Shea, but it would be cooler sitting in a section with all diehards
Maybe Matt can organize a Metsblog event at CitiField. I would be down for a Metsblog outing! :-)
I’m not sitting with this bunch of angry pessimists.
It’s a shame it has to get knocked down this way with a bad taste in our mouths and how the Mets season ended. Maybe Citifield will create new memories and hopefully some better luck.
To be honest, Shea sort of had bad luck hanging over it from the begining. Robert Moses wanted the Brooklyn Dodgers to move in that area and they refused to. They wanted a new stadium in Brooklyn not Queens. One of the reasons they relocated to LA. Moses ended up getting his stadium there and the Dodgers ended up leaving.
Now with Citifield (and its’ Ebbets DNA) and all the Brooklyn reminders in it, it’s sort of like making amend with the old Dodger ghosts.
And yes the opposite can be said with the new Yankee Stadium. Mark my words, that stadium is cursed. Ruth is not too happy right now..lol.
I wish I could of gotten one more walk through in the stadium including the field. Sort of what Matt did, but with pictures of me..lol
I’d even pay for it.
After taking that little tour they had at Shea last Thursday, I’m officially pumped for this stadium.
we tried to pay gary’s wife $500 to meet him… security made us leave after we got all buddy buddy with his wife and daughter… oh well, at least we were the last fans out of the stadium that day.. I know this is a few days late, but thanks Matt for making GKR day possible…
i was in the same elevator as him going up to the diamond club… he was in a rush so all i did was say hi, i wish i took a picture with him or something though
Having been a Mets fan since 1973, I am a little melancholy about Shea being gone. I am surprised by that a little. It is not a pretty or pleasant place anymore, but I guess it is “our place”. I was bitterly disappointed watching Sunday’s game unfold and very depressed as I watched it on SNY at home. I really didn’t want to watch the Shea Goodbye ceremony but I did and I found my spirits being lifted, my heart being filled with pride and even though the last two years have been tough, I found myself enjoying the trip down memory lane. Seeing so many of the guys from past teams and reliving past glory and also shaking our heads at some of the past pain of dreams dashed and heroes unmasked, it really picked me up. I will have a hard time watching the Brewers and Phillies today and beyond. Like so many Mets fans I will pencil the Mets into those games and do some what-iffing. Thanks Shea for the memories and thanks to all those who have donned the uniform and brought me pleasure and anguish over these last 35 years. I love being a Mets fan and I can’t wait until pichers and catchers report.
I was reading a Daily News installment about the Mets in the 80’s and they kept talking about how Shea used to rock…I mean actually shake up and down…
I remember this from game 6 of 2006 NLCS…I was in the upper deck and the place was just electric…and it was shaking..literally…and that was a feeling I never felt before and it made that moment so much more special. Will Citifield be able to shake? prolly not…and its prolly safer that way…but thats my big memory of Shea, that the fans would bring the stadium to life.
That said…it is VERY exciting to think we have a brand new stadium for next season…That is pretty thrilling.
I was in the upper deck for Game 6 as well. When Reyes led off the Bottom of the 1st with a homer, that place certainly came to life.
I was sitting in right field, all the way on the end, near the railing. I looked to my right and there was the beginning of Citi Field. Very exciting moment.
Not knowing a lot about construction, but I think that A. Citi will shake, and B. It should. I think it’s actually safer than not shaking with that kind of force on it.
thats a good pint…Skyscrapers are supposed to sway slightly in the wind.
“Shea Stadium will begin being dismantled, section by section, without a wrecking ball, starting in two weeks”
I think we can say the same for the team…
Lets hope so. Lets also hope the foundation stays the same, however.
The Parks Dept and the Mets have 15 days to salvage everything they want, which started on Monday. After that, the demolition company takes over.
They should have had all of the great players from Mets history take turns with the wrecking ball after the game on Sunday.
Maybe hold an SNY sweepstakes for a few fans to knock down a couple of sections? Could have been a cathartic exercise to put the past 2 seasons in Shea behind the team for good!
Makes no sense why they cant use a wrecking ball. I can imagine this method adds millions to the costs.
well, according to Marty Noble, they’ve already started. We sit with folks – wait, make that, we SAT with folks – who know a muckety-muck at the parks dept, and they told us that the demolition company had been legally cleared to start as of monday.
myself and some other nyc photobloggers have committed to photographing the dismantling of shea. of course, i agreed to do this back when i thought we’d still be watching baseball for a few more weeks. it’s going to be very hard to go out there every week.
Apparently the OF walls are already gone…
Matt :
Several things:
1. Can this Website have a video/photo section of the demolition of Shea? By the way, they can’t impolde Shea either.
2. A friend of mine wants to know , how can he buy Pete Flynn’s rake
3. Is Mike Pelfrey , the Johnny POdres who ends the wait til next year curse
Why does the NY media hate the Mets?
This whole year you couldn’t find any articles mentioning the last year at Shea. Everyone was crying over Yankees Stadium.
Now that the Mets lost on the final day, all you can read about is how Shea didn’t deserve it as if the Yankees are in the World Series or something.
What gives?
Were the Jets were supposed to play one game at Shea? I thought I heard that somewhere.
I was at Saturday’s game and noticed that they had already removed the signage at the gates. Those huge banners with images of Carter, Piazza, etc. They took them down before the season had even ended.
I was hoping they’d use a wrecking ball painted like a baseball, as an homage to Ebbets and the Polo Grounds (which were torn down with the same ball). Oh well.
