Ugh: Wright in Post-Season Ad
By Matthew Cerrone - Oct 1, 2008 3:34 pm

According to the New York Post, there is an ad for post-season coverage on TBS that features a picture of David Wright, located downtown on 7th Avenue in New York.

…thanks for rubbing it in, tbs…much appreciated

    so?

  2. imtiredofguiseppefranco says:

    rubbing it in?

everyone thought the mets would be in the playoffs

the commercial says alot about the season

    • giuseppe franco_procede says:

TBS did not rub it in. The team had expectations. It was great to see a pic of DW over Jimmy Rollins. (SIGH!)

  3. techwonV27 says:

Who cares the Mets choked 2 straight years and Wright the so called franchise player couldn’t take his team to the promise land… D Wright is a great talent ,but until he wins a championship he will never be loved like Straw,Keith,Doc or Lenny…. I remember one quote from David this year where the Mets lost 2 of 3 and like 9 out of 10 in atlanta… After a brutal lose to the Braves and on the verge of another september melt down Wright said.. “This is what makes baseball so fun, This is what you play for as a player” quotes like that make you want to think if this kid is just playing politics or really saying it from his heart… i can never picture Keith or Lenny giving a quote like that after a brutal lose and on the verge of a 2 consecutive meltdown…

    • metsflip says:

      Give Wright time…

    • mouserdz says:

Maybe the Mets should bring back what has worked before – chewing tobacco, and platters of coke.

      • techwonV27 says:

Great Idea… Can you imagine if Wright said something like that on the 86 Met team??? Straw and Mitchell would probably would want to punch out D Wright in the face for saying something like that…. I love D Wright as a player ,but I like players like Backman Lenny and Hernandez more who play with such heart and determination instead of Wright saying “this is what you play for” nonsense…..

        • mouserdz says:

I disagree with you that Wright lacks ‘heart and determination.’ I think the guy cares as much as anyone else on this team. The guy was a Mets fan growing up, you know he wants to win badly. If anything, the problem might be that he pressing too much, because he wants it so badly.

He hasn’t come through yet in the clutch, that I agree. But I’m willing to give the 25 yr old some time.

        • techwonV27 says:

Good Point.. I’m not knocking Wright ,but he can’t say stuff like that’s what makes baseball fun and that’s what you play for when your organization is on the verge of two consecutive meltdowns…. Wright needs to just get the job done and stop choking in big spots..

        • racemccloud says:

“I’m not knocking Wright.” Are you kidding? I think you must get paid to do that, you do it so much.

        • mymetsrock says:

yeah, leading the team in RBIs is SO unclutch.

      • starz31 says:

Amphetamines is where its at if you want an edge.

Plenty of players still chew anyways.

    • hjhjhjhjhj says:

i guess you didnt hear the first part of his comment and are probably too young to have heard hernandez make the same comments when he was a player…

    • njmetfan111 says:

Last year was not on Wright. David Wright was playing on Babe Ruth’s level in 2007. This year, he kind of had a bad ending, but nobody would have noticed Wright’s stats this September if the other players could cut him some slack.

  4. BLUEXORANGE says:

phillies are going to win the nlds….god i hate them but there going to win

    • racemccloud says:

I honestly do not care. Let ‘em. They’re in, they earned it, and someone has to win. We’ll get ‘em next year.

  5. njmetfan111 says:

This is has just as much impact in my life as if I heard that Luis Castillo and Aaron Heilman got traded. WHO CARES???

    • mouserdz says:

I’d actually sleep a lot better if I I heard that Luis Castillo and Aaron Heilman got traded. I look forward to seeing that post.

    • starz31 says:

That trade would impact my life for the better…

  6. mrBill aka DWright says:

I guess that is the only way Wright can make it to the post season.

  7. patrick says:

    How old are you? Really?

Because either you have selective amnesia or no real recollection of what went on in the 1980s.

By the time Dysktra left the Mets in 1989 more than half the fan base had read the good riddance act describing Dykstra and his approach at the plate and pouting attitude much the same way some are now describing Jose Reyes.

As for Darryl? You can’t be serious, beloved? It took his leaving, winning two more rings crying in Joe Torre’s arms and the Mets going 20 years without a title before Darryl came back to Shea on good terms with the fans suddenly forgetting everything because of how much crappy baseball they saw between 1986 and 2006.

No one baseball player carries his team to the promised land. It ain’t possible.

Wright is the most prolific offensive player in the history of the Mets organization. In 5 years he and Jose Reyes will own every record nearly 1 & 2 in the Mets record book.

    Go put your retainer in.

    • njmetfan111 says:

Good job Patty, bring some knowledge to the fans.

    • zen says:

it sounds like straw, dykstra, mets fans, and the organization put that drama all behind them along time along and just enjoy the memories of some great baseball and a world series title…

…it also sounds like you’re still holding that tension inside…let it go.

we got the teamwork to make the dream work…

      • patrick says:

I think you missed my point. I am not bagging on the 1986 team, but to pretend it was all love and flowers in the moment is blind.

    • hjhjhjhjhj says:

      thank you

    • techwonV27 says:

I could care less about record books… The fact is Darryl,Lenny,Doc,Keith,Darling all won a championship… Reyes could end up with 3000 hits and D Wright with 500 hr’s and in my opinion would not stand out as much as the players i’ve mentioned in the 80s… By the Way Mets haven’t had that many good players on this team so breaking all Met records isn’t really that big of an accomplishment in the grand scheme of baseball unless you are talking about pitching….

      • hjhjhjhjhj says:

i agree that they need to win a championship to have the ultimate admiration….but that doesnt mean you throw them away like you want to because the TEAM and most specifically the bullpen blew up again this year….but i know DW is not clutch…blah…blah….blah

      • patrick says:

And you have cemented the point home. The Mets have not had many good players, so your drivel about them never being clutch and never going to do anything is about as sound as a four year olds temper tantrum before bed.

If Reyes ended up with 3,000 hits and Wright 500 HRs they would be enormous accomplishments.

That is of course unless you think Ted Williams and Ernie Banks are meaningless chokers and after thoughts in the history of baseball.

Thanks for playing, cookies at 430pm.

      • starz31 says:

It took time for those players to win a W.S. though.. Doc debuted in 84…Darryl in 83. Keith came in 83. Carter came in for 85…point is, that 80’s team took a few bumps along the road to get to 86.

  8. nastyslider says:

the Brewers don’t deserve a freakin post-season. They are a disgrace today. They only got in cause of one pitcher!

  9. dave27 says:

Phillies dumping on the Brewers in the third. Will they fall to 0-8 vs. the Mets and Phillies since Spetember 1?

And yet we let them past us anyway. Sad.

    • Nightlife says:

To be fair, Gallardo is pitching decently and if not for a Weeks error it might still be 0-0.

  10. scoop says:

    off topic, but…

what would you think about trying to get a guy like carl crawford? his value definitely will have dropped after this season, and i actually think that we could bat him leadoff, and then reyes second…

    • njmetfan111 says:

Would love Crawford, but good luck trying to convince the Rays not bringing him back. But if you can do that, then get a knife to Omar’s throat and tell him that Crawfrod better be wearing a Mets uni next year.

    • joe the wanderer says:

brewers are pathetic …… no hit by Hamels so far. …. i thought this team can crush lefties.

  11. BlueCapsOnly says:

Francessa is making me nuts with his Mets core bashing and Phillies core felating. Someone needs to call him and tell him the Phils core was older in ‘06 than the Mets core is now, and the Phils won nothing then. Plus the Phils line-up didn’t have the amount of pressure on them knowing that if they put up a lead the pen would blow it anyway.

Anyone think of this when trying to figure out why the Mets scored so many runs early and none late: Well, when the starter is in the game they have faith the game will be close, but once the pen comes in there must be an enormous pressure. Our Pen was a parisite and was affecting the offense, cut it off and move on.

  12. dave27 says:

What is the point of this post? Or the article?

Remember when Jeter was all over Fox’s All-Star advertising and didn’t make the team? Did everyone make a big deal about it?

TBS have run playoff commercials as late as September iwth hte Braves and Rangers. And we’re obsessing about a team eliminated on the last day, with a better record than 2 playoff team?

Ads need to be developed well in advance. They can’t get everything perfect. Let it go already.

  13. youknowwhatimsayin says:

That billboard’s been up for WEEKS.

Why act like it was just put up today?

    Geez.

  14. Johnman15 says:

there seems like way too many people are enjoying this happening and the Mets are so busy worrying about saying the right thing. Can they just get someone with an attitude next year and just say @#$# everyone that wants to pile on. It really started with whole Braves celebrating and numerous comments by the Marlins guys before they came in. It seemed like nobody from the MEts wanted to just say screw them.

  15. egnirc says:

Another case of a team whining about the Mets players antics and then laying down for another team that is nearly the same with their antics.

    • rustyjr says:

don’t u have a philty game to watch?? runalong mommy is making scrapple for din din!!

  16. Two-By-Four says:

For the Mets and for us the season is history. It makes no sense to dwell and brood over what occurred. The front office has to learn from this and if possible make the necessary corrections. But when all is said and done the Mets and their fan base have to move on and look to the future.

  17. guierllNO MOta says:

OK, Matt wont let me post a link so go to si.com and check out Heymans article that Johan pitched game 161 with a torn meniscus, I heart Johan, he has more heart than the other 24 combined.

  18. Darth Manuel says:

Not one team in baseball respects or fears the NY Mets.. They have continually been laughed at and teams know that when they oppose their will on the Mets, the Mets fold. When a group of youngsters on the Marlins intimidate the entire Mets clubhouse, there is a huge problem.. In the last moth of the season we got our buts kicked by the Nats,Braves,Phils,Cubs and Marlins. When are some of you going to wake up and realize that ITS NOT JUST OUR BULLPEN!!

    • hjhjhjhjhj says:

your right its not just our bullpen…its:
      NO LF
      NO RF (after may)
      NO 2B
      not much from catcher
NO 4th starter last 6 weeks
      NO 5th starter all season

but hey lets blame the 4 guys that did the most offensively for this team…ya they are the reason we are not playing today….seriously how do you even reach that conclusion? please tell me!!!

  19. Gland says:

Ok something I’ve wanted to do:

Chase Utley – Age 29 (will turn 30 in Dec.)
Jimmy Rollins – Age 29 (will turn 30 in Nov.)
Ryan Howard – Age 28 (will turn 29 in Nov.)

David Wright – Age 25 (will turn 26 in Dec.)
Jose Reyes – Age 25 (will turn 26 in June)
Carlos Beltran – Age 31 (will turn 32 in April)

So all this “trade the core, they are unclutch” crap from the Fat Man, look at the age difference between Utley/Rollins and Wright/Reyes. Four years at this stage is huge!

    • The Phillies core choked in the first round of last year’s playoffs. Our core, much younger than theirs, at least got their team to a game 7 of the 2006 NLCS. It’s clear to me who has achieved more.

      • Gland says:

Exactly. Surround our core with the right guys and give them a bullpen (not the same one as the last two years!) and lets see what they can do.

You don’t trade 25 year olds. If Wright/Reyes were 30 this might be a different discussion.

        • Darth Manuel says:

Two consecutive NL east titles by the Phillies means a hell of a lot more that a game 7 NLCS..

        • rustyjr says:

anyone hear that caller with fatcessa?? the guy called him out saying “hat if the philths get eliminated in the 1st round again do u blow up the team?” on cue fat sweatty bastard says of course not they made it to the post season – what a a-hole

        • Getting to the playoffs means squat if you get knocked out in the first round. It means even less if you fail to even win one game.

By your logic, winning one single WS is a lesser achievement than if a team makes the postseason 3 years in a row but goes nowhere once it gets there.

          I disagree.

Lets be realistic. Neither team has anything recent to crow about in terms of the postseason. Because neither team has won a WS ring yet. But in terms of achievement the Mes have done more so far.

        • rustyjr says:

i think darth is a philly fan in disquise emporer charlie manuel has gotten to the padawan lol

  20. Retire 31 says:

    2005 13-15 .464

    2006 14-15 .483

    2007 14-14 .500

    2008 13-12 .520

This team cannot play when the chips are down, that’s going beyond ‘07 and ‘08. Break up the core guys?? No. How about giving them some d@mn rest during the year so they aren’t the walking dead come September, and maybe can muster up the energy to fight back. Find ways to rest your key guys.

I think the Mets set a major league record this year by having 4 players (Wright, Reyes, Beltran, Delgado) play in 159+ games each during one season, the first time any team has ever done that. There are reasons that hasn’t happened before, and it has little to do with the durability of every other team that has ever played. Giving guys rest is a necessary comodity, one this team sadly doesn’t understand.

    • rustyjr says:

i’m just wondering who we can obtain that will put up good numbers and have a leadership role – it ain’t manny

    • rustyjr says:

look retire if u rested any of those guys more than we did our entire lineup woulve been exposedremember alou and church weree down for most of the season and so were the replacements like pagan and trot

    • patrick says:

dude the chips were not down in Sept of 06 and the team was dealing with dropping of Pedro and El Duque.

there was no core in 2005, Betlran had a broken face, Reyes finally stayed healthy and Wright was just getting his feet wet.

      • rustyjr says:

patrick it took the mets 2 series to clinch in 06 – theey lost 2 outta 3 against the marlins and were swept by the pirates if memory serves correctly

  21. Darth Manuel says:

I am stuck in Mets hell. My heart belongs to a bunch of guys that fear success and failure. Not sure how that happens but it figures that it happens with my team. Fact is they get scared. They are scared of failing in big spots and get tight. The only way this team ever achieves what its capable of is if this obstacle in overcome. If Jerry manuel has to stay then I would make sure we have all new coaches around him..

How about Wally Backman as the bench coach? Mazz as third base coach. Thats some instant Grit! Both are champions and both don’t take any sh!t..

    • rustyjr says:

i agree – get rid of aquayo and put wally at third – maz loves being in the studio wearing his canali suits lol i don’t think he’d coach again – manage yes coach – no

  22. White Bread says:

So…how’d that Brian Bannister trade work out?

Apparently, Ambiorix Burgos just killed two women in a hit-and-run.
    Boy did that trade backfire.

  23. rustyjr says:

from the daily news Troubled Mets relief pitcher Ambiorix Burgos allegedly struck and killed two women in a hit-and-run crash in his homeland of the Dominican Republic, cops told a local paper. Burgos, 24, missed the whole season with an elbow injury.

    oh jeeZ

    • Darth Manuel says:

Also wanted on a gun possession charge. When it rains it pours with this dude. Seriously bad karma

      • rustyjr says:

anybody think that the mets will now do a good citizen speech and sign ( wholesome players ) like they did after 93?

    • ksuth says:

      nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/2008/10/01/2008-10-01_mets_pitcher_ambiorix_burgos_in_alleged_.html

  24. rustyjr says:

well i think it’s safe to say we will never see him in a mets uni ever again!!

  25. Nightlife says:

Not that the Mets deserved it, but man the Brewers………….

    • rustyjr says:

the brew crew lost? last i saw in was 2-0

      • Nightlife says:

It is 3-0 in the bottom of the 8th, and they are getting absolutely owned by Hamels who will probably throw a 2 hit complete game shut out. The Brewers pitchers actually have done fairly well, Weeks made an error and Cameron probably should have been charged for an error as well that lead to the Phillies runs.

  26. danlx13 says:

what do u guyse think of this for next year
    reyes
    beltran
    manny (sign)
    delgado
    wright
    murphy
    byrnes (Trade castillo)
    veritek (sign)

    johan
    pelf
    lowe
    maine
    niese

    closer – krod

-thats means signing krod, manny, lowe and veritek…4 people
-moving wright to the 5 hole i think would take a lot more pressure off of him
-Veritek would deal with the pitching staff very well and is the kind of guy the mets want in the clubhouse…i also think he is better offensively than schnieder…castro would be the backup
    - manny would give the mets the big hit when they need it

    • mrose says:

      NO VERITEK
      my god…hes not good

    • techwonV27 says:

Varitek is the perfect guy for the Mets if he was 5 years younger… The guy carried the Redsox for 2 championships with his leadership all players respected him and followed his lead…. I would seriously think about getting russell martin from the Dodgers…

  27. mrose says:

what burgos did is terrible but holy $hit people… can you please stop saying what a terrible trade it was? Bannister would not have stayed in our rotation…look at his season in KC this year…. ugh

Its a terrible situation and I feel bad for those girls families, but this is not on Minaya wow

    • rustyjr says:

i agree mrose – i hope the families can grieve in peace bannister coulda been a good long relief – spot starter though

  28. rustyjr says:

i wonder if anyone will bring this up to omar ?

  29. Nightlife says:

The Brewers bat Mike Cameron lead off.

Let that one sink in for a moment.

    • rustyjr says:

yeah he was busted for uppers like mota was with the roid’s how does that sit with u?

  30. rustyjr says:

    keep me posted night

  31. rustyjr says:

maybe if the brews wear puljos masksthey could get to lidge lol

  32. nastyslider says:

    YEAH BRAUN!!!!!!!

  33. nastyslider says:

    COME ON LIDGE BLOW IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  34. rustyjr says:

lets go brew crew lets go – clap clap!!

  35. nastyslider says:

    COME ON FATTY!

  36. rustyjr says:

come on u fat bastard – you make cancel look thin!!

  37. nastyslider says:

    Fielder stinks!!!!!

  38. nastyslider says:

    Come on Hardy!!!

  39. nastyslider says:

come on tying runs on base brew crew!!!!

  40. mouserdz says:

    I normally Hate Hart, but….
    c’mon HART!

  41. Nightlife says:

Corey Hart homer would be sweet.

  42. nastyslider says:

    32 pitches for Lidge!

  43. rustyjr says:

damn too bad nothing ryhmes with lidge lol

  44. rustyjr says:

in the words of the infamous judge snells “WEELLLLLL !! WERE WAITING !!”

  45. nyj0126 says:

Corey Hart is one of the most pathetic baseball players I’ve seen. Brad Lidge threw 35 pitches. If he goes tomorrow, he’ll be tired. I see the Brewers winning because C.C’s on the mound and Brett Myers has been lit up in his last two starts.

  46. rustyjr says:

lets go C.C OUR ACE 2.0 !! -hey i could dream lol

  47. nyj0126 says:

If you’re Dale Sveum, I don’t know how you can leave just a useless baseball player in such important situations. I know he got a hit off of Hamels earlier in the game, but this guy is an automatic strikeout. I told myself I should have walked away before the at bat and I still said that to myself when it went to 2nd and 3rd.

What will happen more in this series or playoffs? Corey Hart K’ing or Ryan Howard walking. Probably Howard walking, but Hart has to know what he can and can’t swing at. Unlike a lot of other Brewers hitters, he was intelligent enough to take a pitch. Still though, the Phillies are not in good shape seeing their closer throw 35 pitches even if he had a few days off prior.

  48. rustyjr says:

sounds like castillio – except insertground out inning ending double play

    • rustyjr says:

      * and delete strike out

    • nyj0126 says:

Yeah, pretty much. Corey Hart is pretty much a hit or miss type hitter. He does have power – but for the amount of at bats he had you’d think he’d have more home runs. Eventually he probably will, but he doesn’t have a good idea when going up there. He needs to zone it, cut down and look for better pitches to hit.

Luis Castillo is just a ball player that lacks talent at this point in his career. His mind has been destroyed by the pressure in New York. His legs are in horrible shape. If this guy were a FA at the end of the year and no one offered him a Pro contract, he’d probably retire.

Luis Castillo is like Guillermo Mota who had to rely on luck to get out of the 8th tonight. A poison to the team. And Aaron Heilman is too. If we’re going to look at players with anger, the anger should be more justified. So in a way Hart’s like Wright. A guy who’d you’d like to get more big hits out of, but someone who you know is there every day and should be.

      • rustyjr says:

gret analogy – except like i saidearlier today – i don’t think the mets trade heilmann – he’s arbi eligable re: cheap alternative ‘and is coming off a injury – they might throw him against the wall and see if he sticks

  49. techwonV27 says:

Anyone think Hojo will be back next year?? Even though we all love Hojo the team nosed dive hitting wise especially situation hitting after Rick Downs was fired… Why the hell was Down fired anyways?? Even though Hojo is one of “our guys” I think he should be let go….

    • nyj0126 says:

He’ll probably be back. So will Warthen. He worked well with Ollie and Pelfrey. The two obvious guy’s who need to go is Luis Aguayo and who ever the bullpen coach is. I don’t really care what they choose to do with Sandy Alomar or Ken Oberkfell.

      • rustyjr says:

i hope soi love hojo but remember hitting instructors are like the continent antartica – we all know they’r there but who gives a rats patootie !!

      • nyj0126 says:

Hojo knew the problems. No one can sit here and say the Mets didn’t have some of the best team and individual offensive numbers though. Howard’s not hitting. How can he be clutch? He knew of the droughts. It’s a psychological thing the team needs to get over.

If the Mets can develop a rock solid bullpen like Philadelphia – even if it costs a lot of money, Fernando Martinez or Jon Niese – it’ll put the Mets hitters mind more at ease. It’ll make them more confident their hits can win the games.

        • techwonV27 says:

I don’t know though if Manuel comes back and it looks like he will I think he might want to go back and pick his staff from the scratch not the left overs from the Willie era.. Aguoyo and the bullpen coach will all likely not come back and I think with the exception of Sandy Alomar nobody has a secure job in that coaching staff…

        • rustyjr says:

agreed -btw who ever thought they’d ever hear the term rock solid bull pen and the phils in the same sentence??

        • rustyjr says:

i don’tthink omar will give him that type of autonomy – he didn’t with willie – although jerry is a proven manager

  50. nyj0126 says:

That series is going 5 games. We’ll see C.C. go up against Cole on Sunday. Cole’s advantage will be that he’s in Philly and he’s off normal rest, but C.C. is a more dominating pitcher. There’s no doubt Johan and these two guy’s aren’t just the best two left-handed starters in the NL, but the three best lefty’s in baseball and arguably even the best three in the game.

I don’t hold as much resentment against Milwaukee because I know the Mets only had to go 9-8 to get in as the Wild Card in their last 17. And for that matter, 10-7 would have won the division on the head-to-head record with the Phillies and both teams clinched. So it’s still the Mets I’ll hold resentment towards for the next 4-6 months or longer. If I see Biemel, Dennys Reyes, or Arthur Rhodes + David Weathers, Juan Cruz or Brian Shouse in our bullpen + Brian Fuentes or K-Rod closing out games – I’ll at least be half over it.

    • rustyjr says:

i harbor no ill will against the brews either — just ticked off at our pen still- i mean that sunday game where ollie was up by 2 runs?? or the pelfrey game against the cubs?? or the game where delgado hit the grand slam against zambrano – all shoulda been wins !! – sorry had to vent

    • patrick says:

you really think that Sabathia is going to start tomorrow, Thursday, on three days rest, then Sunday on two days rest?

The Mets make the playoffs in 2006, the same year that the 1st round of the playoffs was televised on ESPN, the last two years, the same one that the Mets lost the playoff berth on the last day has been televised on TBS, the Atlanta Braves owner’s network.
    Now talk about Jinx….damn Braves!!

  52. techwonV27 says:

Let’s address the 2008 NY METS.
It’s clear this team had no bullpen, weak bench, and no leadership to really carry them off the field.
Here’s how you fix the Bullpen.
    Sign KRod
Sign Manny 3 year deal and club option for 4th year
Trade Church for bullpen arms. (Dodgers have great bullpen arms especially Hong Chi Kuo)
Sign Good arms in the FA market.
Sign battle tested hard nose type players on and off the field like Mark Derosa and Craig Counsell.
Try to trade for Russell Martin or AJ Pierzynski.

    1Jose Reyes
    2 Carlos Beltran
    3 Manny Ramirez
    4 Carlos Delgado
    5 David Wright
    6 Daniel Murphy
    7 Russell Martin/AJ Pierzynski
    8 Fernando Tatis/Angel Pagan/Endy Chavez

    Starting Pitching
    1 Johan Santana
    2 Mike Pelfrey
    3 John Maine
    4 Derek Lowe/AJ Burnett
    5 John Neise

    Bullpen

    K Rod
    Hong Chi Kuo

Great Lineup who can hit.. Leadership from the bench and toughness from Counsell/Derosa.. and a Very good starting rotation along with nasty setup and closer.. That my friends is a winning team right there…

    • danlx13 says:

      i like it

    • OrangeNBlueSince82 says:

First off, ow do you suppose the Mets acquire Russell Martin? He’s not a free agent and the Dodgers aren’t just going to give him away.

Secondly, I wouldn’t mind Manny because the guy can falt out hit and is clutch as can be. He’s 37 and I would prefer the Mets stay away from older players who are more likely to get injured or decrease in production but Manny may be the exception.

As for Counsell and De Rosa, Counsell is a free agent but he’s 38 years old and really brings nothing to the table. I know he has two World Series rings but he’s not going to really help. De Rosa, on the other hand, is still under contract.

    • oleosmirf says:

i like the idea although a little too unrealistic.

the mets arent going to be able to afford Manny and K-Rod you have to pick 1.

Manny is the cheaper option and the more logical one. Fuentes can be a very good 2nd option whereas there is no RH LF that can produce anything like Manny.

i also love the signings of DeRosa and Counsell. Counsell can be a great pinch hitter and DeRosa can play RF and 2B in a 3-way platoon with Church and Murphy. your other catchers are not gonna happen but Varitek from the right side would be a great platoon with Schenider. thats 6 (possibly another 1) we’ve added with counsell, manny and varitek

      Reyes
      Beltran
      Manny
      Delgado
      Wright
      Church
      Murphy
      Schneider/Varitek

      Santana
      Pelfrey
      Lowe
      Maine
      Pedro/Niese

(i wont give up on Pedro not after a 9 K performance in his last outing and if he fails Niese will be a short flight away in Buffalo)

      Fuentes will close
      Dennys Reyes 8th inning guy

      • OrangeNBlueSince82 says:

I wish I could have as much fiath in Pedro as you but let’s be realistic: He struck out nine members of the Iowa Cubs in his last start not Aramis, D Lee and Soriano.

        • oleosmirf says:

pedro would wind up being cheaper than anyone the mets could get via FA and i believe that with a strong offseason conditioning program pedro’s velocity can return to the low 90s.

plus hes the bargaining chip for manny

        • nyj0126 says:

Pedro may have struck out nine unmotivated Cubs who had clinched the division and best record at that point, but he also gave up 5 earned runs in 6 innings. People would even be more angry with him if the Mets had not score enough runs to keep themselves in and eventually win that game. Had the Mets made it to Monday, it would have been a disaster with him on 3 days rest. He was even horrible on 5 days numerous times this season.

He never warmed up right if he gave up a 1st inning run in like 18 out of 20 times. If the Mets can sign him to a minor league deal or the veteran’s minimum as a spot starter/long reliever, I can see this. Especially if he helped get us Manny. Either way, we just can’t depend on him on a regular basis next season. He’s way past his prime. He’s just an easier person to like than Luis Castillo because of his legacy in this game.

  53. FrankyJay says:

I like it, but i prefer to signed a 2B too, and left Murphy on the LF this year, then put it on 1B in 2010. I like him better as a 1st base.

Next year is our year baby

    first metsblog post!

    • nyj0126 says:

Yup. The start of a new era. Forget 2006. Who cares about that year? 2009 is the year. People don’t know how close these Mets really are. If the Mets had an average bullpen, they would have won 100 games. If we can get a really good bullpen, we can do a lot. More than just win a division or a wild card. I’m talking about getting to and winning the World Series.

The funny thing is when this season is all said and done, the Phillies wouldn’t have done anymore than we did in the last 3 seasons. The best they may do is lose in the NLCS like we did in 2006. Phillies came close but lost out on the Wild Card that year. And the same happened to us the last two seasons.

2009 is our year if Omar chooses to address the needs of our team – the main one being the one our CF vocally addressed.

  55. nyj0126 says:

Option A: Re-sign Oliver Perez to a 4 yr/48MM contract, sign Manny Ramirez is the starting LF of the Mets on a 4 yr/80MM type contract, Mark Grudzielanek or Ray Durham on a 1yr/4MM deal platooning with Argenis Reyes, trade Niese/Kunz/Evans to Oakland for Street, sign one reliever like Juan Cruz or Brian Shouse to a 3yr/13.5MM deal, re-sign Ayala 1yr/1.5MM and hold onto all relievers except Heilman, Schoenweis and Duaner. The overall annual cost of these transactions would be about 38 or 39 MM.

  56. nyj0126 says:

Option B: Sign C.C. Sabathia to a deal identical to Santana’s which would be for about 23MM a year, Brian Fuentes to a 3 yr/30MM deal, sign Grudzielanek or Durham to a one year deal, go with a platoon of Daniel Murphy and Nick Evans in LF next season, re-sign Ayala 1yr/1.5MM and hold onto everyone in the pen except for Heilman, Duaner and Show in the pen. The overall annual cost to this would be about 37 or 38MM.

    • OrangeNBlueSince82 says:

Niese, Kunz and Evans is an awful lot for Street especially since the guy has regressed since he broke into the bigs. Niese isn’t going anyhwere unless it’s in a no-brainer type trade. Minaya speaks very highly of the guy, he’s 20 years old, he’s lefty and although he got rocked in two of his three starts, he has nasty stuff, especially his curveball.

You can’t really judge Niese off of just three starts. The kid was obviously nervous in Milwaukee and it’s a lt of pressure for a guy wh pitched half a season in Triple A to be counted on down the stretch in a pennant race. Imagine if they had given up on Pelfrey after how his career started.

I think Niese will get every opportunity to be the fifth starter next season coming out of spring training.

      • nyj0126 says:

This is why I probably wouldn’t want that option. Getting Putz, Street or even Sherrill probably wouldn’t require the Mets giving up F-Mart. You’d figure it has to take one of Niese or Parnell + another decent prospect. It’s possibly you may see a combination of Parnell, Kunz and Evans or Niese, Burgos and Evans. Or something of that sort. I’d much rather look at what’s on the FA market than do this though.

      • nyj0126 says:

I think it’d be better if the Mets sign a legit 5 pitcher so we’re ready to win right out of opening day. I do agree with what you’re saying though. There’s a chance Niese or even Parnell is the 5 pitcher in this rotation next season if they can prove their way. Niese is still really young so there won’t be a need to rush him. Just like we shouldn’t rush F-Mart. We sort of rushed Pelfrey and Smith, but both of them were college guy’s so it wasn’t the worse thing. It took them a lot of bumps, but they’re finally good. We waited for Daniel Murphy and now the Mets have been rewarded with a really good ball player too.

I think Fuentes is the most ideal person to be the Mets closer next season because the price will be lower than K-Rod. Fuentes has had question marks around him too. Like 4 consecutive blown saves in 8 days in July 2007 can make him look less attractive than K-Rod though.

  57. nyj0126 says:

Option C: Re-sign Oliver Perez to a 4yr/48MM deal, sign K-Rod for 4yr/60MM, sign Grudz or Durham 1yr/4MM, sign Juan Cruz or Brian Shouse to a 3 yr/13.5MM contract + Joe Biemel or Will Ohman to a 3yr/13.5MM deal and get rid of Heilman, Duaner, Show and Ayala. Overall, this would cost 34 or 35MM which would even cost less than the other two options.

  58. nyj0126 says:

In all three of those scenarios, let’s say Delgado’s option is picked up, Castillo’s bought out or traded with the Mets paying a lot of it and Daniel Murphy’s an OF.

  59. BullpenHelp says:

I thought I saw an article earlier this year suggesting the Mets would have trouble raising their payroll if they missed the playoffs again and lost that playoff revenue. You’ll have a hard time finding $39 million to spend… unless you can unload some payroll (like Castillo)

    • oleosmirf says:

      NO OLIVER PEREZ!!!!!!!!!!!

      • nyj0126 says:

Derek Lowe works too, but isn’t he turning 36 at some point early next season? It’d be hard to give a guy at his age a 4 year deal. A lot of teams will be looking at him. Kyle Lohse is another possibility, but I think he’s as much of a question as Ollie for a long term deal. Burnett and Sheets would cost more and is more injury prone. I know Oliver’s consistency is more in question, but he’s also much healthier and younger than other pitcher’s on the market. Plus you can hold onto your own draft picks by re-signing him. He’s also used to the environment here and does great against good teams.

        • OrangeNBlueSince82 says:

No Kyle Lohse for us. He signed a four-year $40 million extension with St. Louis over the weekend.

    • nyj0126 says:

      Well, here’s what we’re shedding.

      Pedro – 11.5MM, Alou – 7.5MM, Oliver Perez – 6.5MM, El Duque – 6.0MM, Jorge Sosa – 2MM, Matt Wise – 1.2MM, Damion Easley – 0.95K.

The Mets should be able to trade Schoenweis for basically nothing to a team that’ll pay his entire 3.6MM salary. His numbers weren’t that bad. If the Mets could find someone to take Mota last year and pay it, than we can get him out of here. Heilman was paid 1.2MM and Sanchez 0.85K so getting rid of those two guy’s for minor leaguers saves 2MM too.

If added those three reliever’s + all the Mets major league contracts that come off the books, the Mets shed 41.3MM. I also know that the Marlins are paying 4MM of Delgado’s contract. I don’t know how that’s been distributed, but I’m taking it that was supposed to cover the buyout for 09′ which is 4MM. Even not counting that and understanding Santana’s salary goes up 5.5MM – the Mets will still shave 35.8MM off the books.

I know this doesn’t include arbitration hearings for Feliciano, Church and Maine who may not cash in well with their injuries anyway. The Mets can realistically spend around 35MM and keep the payroll the same as it was last year.

In general, the Mets have gradually spent more and more each year. Inflation and the New York market help allow this to exist. I understand them missing out on the playoffs hurt, but going into a new stadium does help.

      • nyj0126 says:

With that being said, if they are able to get someone to even pay for 1/3 to 1/2 of Castillo’s remaining 3yr/18MM … it’d help. But there’s no way the Mets will be able to unload his entire salary without acquiring another bad contract via trade. Eric Byrnes probably would be worth the risk of Arizona’s willing too in the event they lose Hudson, but he can turn out costing the Mets even more with little production if he lands on the DL.

  60. nyj0126 says:

In my opinion, option C is the best one. There’s obviously more out there such as Orlando Hudson, A.J. Burnett among others, but I just wanted to see which one like it can get us the most wins in 2009. I didn’t make from best to worse order in my opinion. I think all the options are good, but option C allows us to hold onto our prospects and it directly addresses the weaknesses of this team. I think options A and B just make our strengths more stronger and only minimally improves the bullpen.

This team really has enough money off the books to get one superstar – whether it be K-Rod, Sabathia or Manny. If we had not loss the division in 2007, Omar may have not been as driven to acquire Johan. Glavine may have returned. Losing the Wild Card in 08′ may press Minaya harder to sign a big name and finally address the main need.

    • oleosmirf says:

sabathia will demand way too much. no way i think he’s worth 200 mil especially with his 300 lbs its way too risky

k-rod also will demand 100 mil + and that is way too much for a closer.. the mets could get fuentes and manny for that

      • nyj0126 says:

K-Rod is not getting 100 mill. It’s just not going to happen. And for that matter, C.C. isn’t getting 200 million. Sabathia getting a more ridiculous number is much more realistic though because the market will be larger for him.

The Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs and other big market clubs are not going after K-Rod because they got closers and other needs they’d like to address. Mainly starting pitching. The Red Soxs are pretty loaded with SP, but signing Sabathia would just be to keep him away from the Yankees and to get better than Tampa Bay (I never thought I’d be saying that).

This is why K-Rod would be much more realistic to the Mets than Sabathia would. Most clubs around the league would still believe Johan’s a better pitcher than CC. It is very close, but giving Johan six years looked more ideal because he’s in much better shape. I know the market tends to be greater to a FA. We could just look at Zito for example. I think C.C. will command around 6-7 years for 150-175 mill. This is why the Mets will probably not sign him.

  61. oleosmirf says:

    Reyes
    Beltran
    Manny
    Delgado
    Wright
Church/DeRosa (3 way platoon with Murphy)
    Murphy/DeRosa
    Schenider/Varitek (platoon)

    Santana
    Pelfrey
    Lowe
    Maine
Pedro/Niese (Pedro cheaper option than anyone on FA list)

    Figueroa (long man)
    Stokes (middle relief)
    Smith (righty specialist)
Ayala (in a middle relief role)
    Scott Eyre (lefty specialist)
    Dennys Reyes (8th inning)
Brian Fuentes or Joakim Soria (if he can be traded for)

    • OrangeNBlueSince82 says:

DeRosa is signed though 2009, so scratch that off your list.

    • nyj0126 says:

Fuentes as closer with Reyes as set up is realistic. Eyre is a big question mark because he did well in Philly, but horrible with the Cubs. Ayala did good with the Mets, but horrible with Washington. It’d be much better if the Mets brought in guy’s who’ve consistently gotten the job done rather than continue the trend of question marks. Having both Figueroa and Stokes would definitely continue this too. Figueroa’s probably done as a Met, unless he’s in Buffalo waiting to get a spot start. Stokes as a long reliever makes more sense. The Mets thought they had a solid reliever in Jorge Sosa coming in this season after he did well in various roles in 07′ and look what happened so you can never be to sure.

They got to make a pitch at one of K-Rod/Fuentes/K.Wood, one of D.Reyes/Biemel/Ohman/Affeldt/Rhodes and one of Weathers/Shouse/J.Cruz if they want to be able to believe they got a really good shot in the 7th, 8th and 9th. Mix Smith, possibly Feliciano, one of Parnell and Stokes and one of Burgos or Kunz – and it’s a really good bullpen.

  62. nyj0126 says:

It’d require the Mets to give up F-Mart plus Niese and perhaps even more to get Soria because he’s really good. Kansas City still has him cheap. They’ve shown they’ve been willing to spend more with the Meche and Guillen signings, so I don’t see them trading Soria or DeJesus either unless the deal was lopsided in their favor.

  63. Airfeet says:

    Gotta get manny or Holliday

  64. nyj0126 says:

Also, a Varitek platoon wouldn’t work because he’s got a weak bat. Plus, he usually hits from the same side of the plate as Schneider. The Mets have Castro signed under contract for 2.5MM next season. He’s a better hitter than Varitek and right-handed so he matches left-hander’s better. Varitek has a lot more value to the Red Sox anyway being a clubhouse leader. He’s won 2 world series and is their captain. He’d definitely provide something Lo Duca gave up a couple years ago, but likewise to Lo Duca now his skills are diminished.

    • oleosmirf says:

im not trying to mean or funny but castro is too fat to be a major league baseball player. He gets hurt every other day and he’s so banged up he cant contribute.

I think Varitek and schneider would make a very good tandem b/c Varitek can hit the lefties but is older and needs rest but has the winning attitude the mets need.

also i would absoultely package Fernando Martinez in a deal for Soria. I just would be suprised if the Royals moved him

    • patrick says:

castro is a better hitter than Varitek?

      Drug dealer and rates please.

      • racemccloud says:

Varitek can be the elusive “clutch”, but his bat has really gone south since ‘04.

  65. nyj0126 says:

Forget anything I said with Ambiorix after this second incident. He’ll be lucky if he’s not in prison now so he’d be meaningless to the Mets, A’s or Buffalo.

    • oleosmirf says:

beimel and cruz are much better options for middle relief over ayala but i like figueroa as the long man. his breaking ball is very sneaky and manuel is a fan of his

you mentioned shouse for 2 years over eyre but shouse is 40 years old and eyre might not have pitched well for chicago this year but it was only in 11 innings his era against lefties this year was 1.67. ill take that anyday of the week
