News: Manuel yet to Accept Contract
By Matthew Cerrone - Oct 2, 2008 8:46 am

According to David Lennon in Newsday, citing ‘a person familiar with the situation,’ the Mets have offered Jerry Manuel a two-year contract to stay on as the team’s manager, ‘but he has yet to accept the deal.’

Lennon continues on to speculate as to why Manuel has yet to accept the team’s offer.

frankly, he should wait…according to a poll on MetsBlog.com, 88 percent of this site’s readers want him back…the New York media loves him, he was successful, and i have never heard a person associated with the team say anything negative about him…this, plus knowing there will be at least two or three available managerial jobs at the end of this season, and he should hold out…

For more, check out the Bergen Record, where Steve Popper explains why Manuel has passed every test in 2008.

    Now that’s gangsta.

Anyone think he is holding out to put more pressure on allowing him some say on who is traded or brought in this offseason?

  3. Dirtysanchez says:

    Manuels an OG!

  4. rogasm says:

Good for Manuel. He should be thinking about whether or not he wants to lead this team of chokers. I hope he stays, and I also hope that Omar brings in the right guys for Jerry.

    • Xavier22 says:

Jerry should be allowed to pick his own guys (perhaps that’s what he’s holding out for).

  5. cver says:

I dunno, Matt. First of all, why the hell are we offering Omar an extension? He never addressed the bullpen. Sure, he’s done other good stuff, but awful stuff, too. Let him sweat it out and see what he comes up with this offseason, I say – if retain him this year at all. I actually want Omar gone. As far as Gagsta is concerned, he put Heilman in in some key situations and blew a few games that really would have helped right now. We would have been in the playoffs. Look, he did a decent job. Omar was the one to give him the proper pieces and didn’t. The thing is, if a guy like Heilman can’t pitch, as you have pointed out, he shouldn’t be put out there in key situations again and again. Both Omar and Manuel have their moments, but you would think that we should be able to do better than them. I know that some would just like to see us stay competitive every year – and so would I, but the fundamental choking aspect of this team needs to be addressed and I don’t believe it can by keeping the same guys on. But hey, Jeff Wilpon saying that messed up comment about the team “overachieving” certainly is something that Manuel can shove back in his face in contract negotiations. Can anybody here manage this team?

    • I think Heilman was given every chance to be successful this year because Omar, Manuel, and Willie all know how key he would be to the team’s success. Heilman, when right, could provide a reliable arm to go to in the bullpen when you need 2 innings. I don’t blame them for going to him, because I truly feel the only way this team was going to be successful this year (regular and post season) would have been for Heilman to right himself.

      • Dirtysanchez says:

absolutly..to think this guy had a 3.06 ERA last year in 81 games..if heilman could have repeated that success we would have been in the postseason

      • Tidewater says:

Or if a better option had been acquired.

    • gomets6091 says:

someone didn’t read Vaccaro’s column on the Dodgers. Keep this core together long enough, and I guarantee that they will figure it out and win one year.

      • I happen to agree with you. These guys had so much success so early (a division title is a big deal…to me anyway). They need to remember what it felt like to party on the field and spray champagne. It’s amazing that they haven’t been able to do that this year or last. They need to think about the opportunity they let slip by these past two years. If the playoffs are a crapshoot, they missed out on two opportunities to win. If I’m a player, that ticks me off. I just hope they feel the same way. I think there are guys in that clubhouse who do feel that way. Carlos Delgado says he is hoping to come back. This is a guy who is coming off a 38, 110+RBI season that could easily sign a 2 or 3 yr deal somewhere. But he wants to come back and prove these last two years were abberations.

Whoever manages this group of guys next year needs to instill that attitude in them from the start of spring training. The Phillies stole two years from them. They need to take it back.

    • Kevin Elster says:

Right, It is hillarious how much leverage Manuel has now in these discussions.

Every player on this team has said he should be back. When he took over no one expected them to even be close to a playoff spot. Omar and Jeff have such an arrogance in regards to managers that I hope Manuel throws it back in their face.

I am sure Jerry learned from Willies mistakes. Willie came in as Omar’s lap dog. Jerry knows that they love throwing the blame on the manager, so Jerry needs to come in with more authority, otherwise he should walk. I am positive thier is a managerial spot for him somewhere else.

Also think of all the added pressure on the mets FO if they need to hire another manager. It is easy for them to resign Jerry since they know what they are getting. If he walks their are no guarantees and it can take a turn for the worse. They also already know he blends well with the clubhouse which is more or less the most important thing.

As a Mets fan I hope Jerry comes back because he probably is our best option to win next year with the current cast of players.

      • Tidewater says:

“Their” means belonging to them. “There” refers to a vague place. They’re is a contraction of they + are.

  6. Manuel shouldn’t overplay his hand. I agree that he brings a lot to the table in terms of his personality and how he deals with the media, but his bullpen man-agement leaves a lot to be desired.

If he waits too long, I think they should start looking for a replacement. I would love to have a manager who understands and appreciates small ball. Neither Jerry or Willie did.

I like Manuel as a person, but would not be upset if he didn’t come back.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

agreed…im ok if they brought him back..ok if they let him go.

      • mikey_FF says:

Agreed as well. Manuel was pretty good but I wouldn’t mind if they just brought in all new people.

        • rd says:

          Including the core players!!

        • mikey_FF says:

Nah … Just Delgado. He’s the one they should trade, to make a “change”.

        • Delgado can’t be traded unless he is getting replaced by Manny and we are signing O-Dog, so Murphy can play 1st. Delgado provided all of the pop in our lineup this year. Without him, we will be in much worse shape.

        • Dirtysanchez says:

exactly 09..its a cheap option..why not take it.

        • rd says:

Delgado may be on borrowed time…… He was the leader of a bunch of chokers…… He’s the first one to go, with whoever else brings the best talent in return…

        • Dirtysanchez says:

          huh?

        • mikey_FF says:

There’s always 09: Exactly. Manny can replace him. Delgado can and should be replaced.

        • Like I said though, only if Manny is replacing him. I wonder if a team like Cleveland would be interested in him for a Rafael Perez or Betancourt, and maybe Josh Barfield (bad season this year, but we’ve seen this kid play…I think he will eventually get it).

        • Dirtysanchez says:

production wise maybe but if you got two people that can put up just about the same production but one comes ALOT cheaper and you have other holes to fill…why do it to yourself to take up manny with the circus he will bring with him? And dont say its because of dynamics because murphy has never played 1b in at least the minors. Evans is not really someone you can rely on for a whole year yet.

        • mikey_FF says:

Because Delgado’s option is a very affordable contract for an AL team looking for a DH … and the year he just had put his value sky high.

Holes? Trading Delgado will FILL holes. You can get a lot for him.

        • I guess there would be a few reasons why you would do this. First, Murphy played 3B in the minor leagues. 1B is much closer to 3B than where everyone wants to put Murph, 2B. Second, there is a very viable option as a free agent for left field. So, while left field was a hole, it’ll now be taken up (albeit by a guy who is more expensive, but we’ll then be saving at 1B anyway with Murph). Only difference is, now we’ll have to go out and get O-Dog, unless Slappy McThirdstrikelookington is going to get another shot to prove to us how much he $uck$.

        • mikey_FF says:

Yeah, I think there are a lot of ways you can go with it. I think you can trade Delgado to an AL team and get a closer in return. Then you don’t have to spend a gazillion on KRod.

I think you can sign Manny … you can also look to make a trade for Holliday. Maybe something with Church and Niese as the main pieces can get a trade for Holliday done.

Or you can sign a closer and trade Delgado for a 2nd baseman. Of course, you have to address getting Castillo off the team somehow, first.

Murphy … from what I heard is going to be playing 2nd base in AFL. I think they want him to be the 2nd baseman. This is all speculation.

Bottom line though, you have to be creative because there are so many needs. Trading Delgado to address these needs is the best way to go, IMO.

        • mikey_FF says:

…and if I were the Mets … I would start teaching Fernando Martinez how to play first base.

        • ridethesnake says:

Murphy played 2b as a kid and all the way through high school. He switched to 3b because he was too good a hitter and the weaker hitters were better 2bmen.

In Bingo he asked to be moved back to 2b and impressed the coaches:

          From Daily News in July:
Through 15 games he had committed three errors, but Murphy has drawn positive reviews.

“We gave him a crash course at second base and he’s been playing there like he’s been there forever,” Oliveras said.

“I’m very pleased, very happy with the way he’s played. He’s got the makeup to make the change from third base to second base. I’ll tell you, I played both of them, and in the whole infield I think second base is the most difficult position to play – especially on a double play, you don’t see when the runner is coming. He has done an outstanding job.”

        • mikey_FF says:

Good info ridethesnake. You should keep that on hand and post it every time someone says the kid won’t be able to play 2nd base.

    • jimyager says:

I would like to see Jerry back, but, if that is not going to happen then I would say bring in Gary Carter,

  7. BiggieSmalls says:

If OMAR gets three years how come gansta gets TWO?

  8. zen says:

the wilpons love to low-ball managers.

    • Not true. I hate that people love picking on the Wilpons. Sure, they bungle a few things, but people seem to talk about them the way they talk about Al Davis. Did anyone see that press conference on Tuesday? Absolute debacle. Don’t compare the Wilpons to him.

I think spending $140MM should tell us how much they care about winning. Many people on this site doubted them last year, but they showed how badly they want to win when they signed Santana to that huge contract – well worth it huh?

      • hjhjhjhjhj says:

zen’s comment was that they low ball managers….and they do….and up until that last couple of years the wilpons were being frugal with their payroll and frankly i still think they are….i understand we are not the yankees with revenue…but we are close and could spend more than we do now…..i guess we will see how much they care about winning or how much they care about making money this offseason

  9. Kevin Elster says:

Their is no question in my mind that the Mets go after Manny. Jerry Manuel would probably be a perfect guy to manage such an ego.

You also have to consider how the players will react to a tremendous change in managerial styles. For instance how would Showalter go over in the Mets clubhouse?

  10. CaseStreet says:

    Jerry’s da man.

  11. cver says:

Jerry couldn’t come through – did you guys forget that? You were ready to get rid of Willie, but Jerry didn’t get us to the playoffs. I know, he doesn’t hit, field or pitch, but c’mon. Many of you were the same guys that second-guessed him down the stretch. The team couldn’t make the playoffs WITHOUT Aaron Heilman???? Oh yes, if he had succeeded that would have put us over the top, but that doesn’t mean that Gagsta should have just kept putting him out there. That shows me a dead part of the guy’s brain. Y’know, that “hunch” that Willie used to play that would make us want to scream. This guy Jerry has it unfortunately. There’s no denying that Omar, while also generally an intelligent guy, has a few screws missing himself somewhere that he could leave players on the roster that shouldn’t be on the field. Of course, if the manager has them at his disposal, he needs to use them. Just don’t tell guys like Carlos Muniz that. Not that he was gonna be any better in some of those situations, but putting Heilman in when he was nearly sure to fail and the game was so crucial and on the line, wasn’t doing Heilman, the Mets or us any favors. Obviously, it doesn’t make a FRIGGIN difference for guys like Omar and Jerry. They will be rewarded for their bad behavior. NO ACCOUNTABILITY!!!!! THE METS “RESCUE” PLAN!!! I’m pissed!

    • ravi3 says:

The issue is that there were no options…At the end of the day, the team was a game under .500 with Willie for a half season, and nearly 20 games over .500 in the other half. Obviously Jerry did help this team to perform, and thats what counts. Is it possible that Manuel can coax that one extra win out of the team had he managed the full season? Surely.

  12. jimyager says:

Well I think that Jerry got a clubhouse that was in disaray and full of bad feelings. He also got a pen full of garbage and a starting rotation and starting line up that was falling apart day by day. He turned it around and almost got us there. IF you took back 4 of the blown saves by the pen we are there. We had 30 blown saves, the highest in the MLB. All 30 of those where not under Jerry’s watch. You also have to work with what you got. Heilman was going to be in the pen and had to used at some time as did Show, sanchez and Pedro, so it was a loose loose. who ever you used was a bad choicse.

  13. patrick says:

Look, I want Manuel back, but he has zero hand.

If he does not want to accept a 2 year deal based on a good job, but not a great one, cause he let it slip away too, then so be it.

If he is going to dawdle, offer the job to Oberkefell, do not pick up Delgado’s option and entertain the possibility of dealing Beltran and move on.

The only absolute value that Jerry has is keeping the veterans on point, otherwise, buh-bye and you have a great deal of cause to reload.
