To watch an 18–minute recap of Sunday’s post-game ceremony from Shea Stadium, courtesy of SNY, click here.
Lastly, the Daily News has a photo gallery up of images from inside Shea Stadium, as they dismantle the bundling, seat by seat, and piece by piece.
…the strangest photo in the batch is of the the home-run wall, or the lackthereof…this is just too weird…

god….the memories. lolz first post!
What the hell happened to Howie on Yogi’s intro? That was the best he could do? Why not mention he coined “It ain’t over til its over” as a Met”?
Yeah I noticed that too. Speaking of Yogi, I also noticed he missed stepping on the plate.
I can sum it up in three key bullet points:
- Glad to see a sober Doc Gooden
- Glad to see neither Franco or Leiter were booed
- Why was Willie Mays even considered?
Gee, I don’t know, he is the greatest player ever to play the game? He wore a Mets uniform for 7 years as a player and coach? His return to New York was already voted one of the top 10 moments in Mets history and Shea’s history in seperate fan polls? He is a New York sports icon? He contributed to one of the Mets 4 pennants and had the game-winning hit in Game 2 of hte World Series in 1973? He is Willie freaking Mays?
Stop me at anytime. I’m sorry you think the greatest player in history stopping by your celebration is a bad thing….
Well answer me this, for how many years did Willie Mays play at Shea?
2. And I still refer to my points above. It’s Willie Mays!
Plus how many years did Ventura play for them? 3? Did you wonder why he was considered also?
in addition to him being willie mays… well, I guess that’s about all that matters
And Leiter was booed a bit, which he deserved a little for trashing the Mets in the Delgado negotiations when he was in Florida, and acting on Yankees telecasts like his Mets days never exisited….but I am glad they turned to cheers because the guy was a born and bred Mets fan who was our ace during a real good era.
As for Franco, why would anyone consider booing Franco? Any Mets fan booing Franco should have his head examined. He may not have got the job done every time, but he was everything we should want to root for in a player. If Schownewise had his balls we might be talking about Game 2 right now.
Franco is the disgrace of the Mets and SJU.
not to mention the fact that he was with the team for 15 freaking seasons and set many records along the way…
John Franco has caused me more aggravation than any Met ever. Maybe the worst Met to ever put on the uniform. Yes he loved the team and had heart. He was just downright awful. Did he ever record a save against the Braves?
John Franco has caused me more aggravation than any Met ever.
Armando Benitez, Braden Looper, and the entire 2008 bullpen are all on the line to say thank you.
Yeah, terrible Franco, he never cleaned up after Benitez messes in the 1999 and 2000 NLDS series.
Jeez
Game 2, 2000 NLDS in San Fran….Benitez blows a lead in the ninth. Mets take a one run lead in the 10th…2 outs, Franco on the mound, Barry Bonds at the dish, and a CALLED STRIKE 3!
Will NEVER forget that
Why was Benitez NOT there? I just watched the short version and it was very well done. It brought a tear to my eye when Seaver threw the final pitch the Piazza and they walked off the field together to a huge standing ovation and closed the outfield door one final time as they waved good bye yo the fans. I also liked the past heroes walking along the field shaking hands with the fans and all touching home plate one last time. You could feel the love and admiration that the fans have for these guys. That should have been enough to jump start this team going into 2009 and a new stadium.
This is really rough for several reasons.
One, did not Schoenwiess actually lose a ball to testicular cancer?
Two, the guy was trying to pitch during the last week of the season with a newborn clinging to survival having been born premature.
As for Leiter, he burned his bridge I am suprised he even showed or was invited.
I never hated Franco as much as some, frustrated by him, but never hated him.
Why was Mays considered? If you have to ask that, you probably don’t deserve an answer because you know nothing of Met history much less baseball history.
Leiter was booed also, I could hear it from where I was sitting at least.
Thanks for posting that. I actually got choked up a bit.
I couldn’t help but think that Piazza must have been saying to himself as he was walking out with Seaver, “Will this guy ever shut up?”
lol true Seaver just kept on talking away
On the news they showed a shot of the home run apple…with no wall in front of it. It was sad.
In all my many trips to Shea, this is the first time I’ve seen the urinals. Don’t envy those guys–I’d wear the mask too.
Did anybody else catch the awkward moment before the game when Gary, Keith, and Ron were talking to Mike Piazza? Gary put his hand out making a point and Mike thought that Gary was ending the interview and was going to shake his hand so Mike puts his hand in Gary’s and then realizes that the interview isn’t over and takes his hand back.
I saw this and thought it was really funny. Did anybody else?
I did! really awkward…. and funny.
re-using ANYTHING from the rest rooms??? LOL
They leaked from Day one
Yup, I noticed Yogi missed Home Plate.. I was waiting for someone to slide.
Yogi walked himself down the field and Wille Mays needed help.
It’s a shame to see our heros getting old
This was a nice ceremony - it was nice to see players that I actually saw play honored. I’m an Islanders fan, so I’m only used to seeing players honored who played before I was a fan.
I liked the Seaver/Piazza touch from the last pitch to the closing of the CF wall - very nice.
nice ceremony. great seeing doc again. finally. retire #16
piazza deserved that huge ovation. retire #31
How much do you think they’ll sell those urinals for?
Package them with Heilman and Sanchez and get a real reliever.
If you buy the urinal, you get a line of 12 of the nastiest people you’ve ever seen in front of it for free.
I noticed in the video that they were taking apart seats and stacking up the back rests. I bought a pair of seats from shea. Now I am afraid I wont be receiving original seats from shea but knockoffs instead.
If they’re knockoffs their will be lawsuits. I’m pretty sure they take apart all the seats, and then have them put together before sending them to the buyers. I would be surprised, if they didn’t do some restoration to those seats before sending them out. Half of those seats were broken.
Hopefully we can someone who will show weekly, bi-weekly updates as Shea Gets demolished.
I also bought a pair of Orange seats. I think you might see tape or some kind of marking on them before they get refurbished for your home. If you look at the ad, it said they would be refurbished and painted for home use.
I am working on putting together a photo blog gathering all the images and video I can find on the deconstruction. I will also be making weekly trips out to Shea during the off season to take pictures. Anyone can email me and I will send them the link to the blog. SHEAGOODBYE @ GMAIL . COM
At the game Sunday, I noticed the seats had already been tagged with a number and hologram used to authenticate sports memorabilia….
Did anyone here Francessa ripping Boomer & Carton?
I’m definetly tuning in tomorrow morning.
*hear
No, what did he say?
Probably trying creating fake, professional wrestling like, tensions in order to get some ratings.
anyone watching the sox/rays game and see the little display with the pitcher balfour and orlando cabrera. funny alot of people say “grit” and all that stuff means nothing, well i cant remember the last time one of our pitchers came in struck someone out in a big spot and then pointed to the dugout and yelled at them to sit down. the mets have no swagger what so ever and i watch these teams and wish ours had a little of that in them.
Yeah, but then everyone would cty that pointing at the other team angers them, and gives them even more motivation to beat the Mets
Exactly. If that happens in a game and they go on to lose its “Oh, if he hadn’t motivated the other team we would have won, blah blah.”
Also the play you speak of in that game featured notorious talker Orlando Caberera.
well i mean i saw that cabrera kicked the dirt but he kicked the dirt bc before his AB balfour struck out some one else and started fist pumping and it annoyed cabrera. I’m just saying our team doesnt do the talking and they certainly dont talk back more like just cower and allow other teams to walk all over them.
Huh? Reyes talked back at the Marlins last year and it almost started a fight. And Pelfrey, Pedro and Santana don’t take crap from anyone.
I think in the wake of the mini-collapse this year, everyone is pointing fingers in all directions whether its appropriate or not, and exaggerating and blowing things out of proportion.
A good closer would have done more good for these Mets than any so-called gritty player.
I like a lot of what the SABR crowd does, but that’s my one huge gripe with them: they really don’t think chemistry and nerves have any impact on the game. Some players have BALLS and some don’t, and stats alone don’t dictate that. Heck, you and I have pretty intimate knowledge of crappy baseball teams, and it wasn’t completely a lack of talent. How many times did we have leads late in games back at Mary’s, and somehow we always blew them. There’s a lot to be said for just knowing how to close out and win ballgames, which is something the Mets haven’t had in over 2 years now.
Sabathia has to be the worst playoff pitcher ever.
In all fairness to him, he’s been severely overused the last few weeks, pitching on 3 days rest for the last 3-4 starts.
so what was his excuse last year?
well once again the mets los eout on the playoffs to a team that will most likely get swept. really makes you feel good. At least the yankees wont have to pay as much for sabathia since hes laying yet another egg in a playoff game, and dont give me the 3 days rest BS he walked the pitcher with 2 outs.
totally agree. he stinks in the playoffs and would be a waste of 120 mllion
sabathia has been pitching of 3 days rest for 2 weeks.
he is a bad playoff pitcher. look at his stats from the playoffs last year. era of 8.80. gave up 15 runs all of them earned in 15.1 innings pitched. not good if u ask me
small sample… plus, it would be nice for someone to help us GET TO the playoffs… I’ll worry about how well they pitch once we get there
He got squeezed on a few calls, but there was no excuse to not go right after Myers with a fastball and stop screwing around with breaking pitches trying to get a pitcher out.
Well, if he’s running on fumes, I don’t see how his control is going to be the same. He’s been overused and abused the last few weeks. This is NOT going to affect his market value much.
He will still make a mint and virtually name his price and terms.
boy do i hate shane victorino. but i thank him because he just showed how worthless sabathia is. i dont care that he is a great regular season pitcher or that hes pitching on 3 days rest for the fourth time. u look at last year he did horrible in the playoffs. i think he had a 5 era during the playoffs last year and look at today he walked brett myers and then gives up a grand slam to none other than shane victorino. not howard, utley, or rollins……victorino. so while i thank you victorino i still hate you
This game could be a lot different at this point if not for Corey Hart being such a worthless baseball player.
The Brewers are making things pretty easy on the Myers too. This is the only game where they have a clear cut advantage in starting pitching and it looks like they’re going to tank it. I could easily see the Brew Crew getting swept.
I would like to think that we would have put up a better effort against the Cubs.
If the Dodgers win tonight I really think they’re going to make it to the WS. The Dodgers and Phillies traded sweeps at each others homes this year, but I think they would take the Phillies in a 7 game series.
I don’t know how Johan’s injury would have effected us had we made the playoffs, but I think we could have made a better showing than Brewers have.
Yeah I was reading Chicago write ups on the game from last night and they’re about an inch away from hitting the panic button. History is against them in dropping the 1st game of a best of 5. They demonstrated they were beatable toward the end of the season with Zambrano’s shaky outings outside of his no-no, Harden having arm issues and some of their hitters cooling down. You could argue that they took their foot off the pedal, but no team in the NL is that much better than the rest of the league so if the Cubbies go down tonight might as well make it 101 joyless years on the North Side.
I’m still trying to figure out how the Cubs scored THAT many runs with their lineup this year.
Why would you walk the opposing pitcher and then let him get to 3-2 on his next AB? Jeebus! 19 pitches to Myers so far.
Matt C.: Have you heard anything about Jerry Manuel wanting a third-year on his contract and “Torre money”?
Anyone?
Phillies are the luckiest team on earth….they catch every single team when they are down. Sheets, CC, Hanley, Zambrano…….
Yes, but they win anyway, something the Mets didn’t do.
I said it before the playoffs, the Brewers and Mets deserved no part of the playoffs. Shoulda been a Dodger Phils series and give the Cubs a bye.
When you are intentionally walking Shane Victornio with 2 outs……man I don’t even know. And I don’t care that you are bringing a lefty up.
Report: Mets pick up Delgado’s 2009 option
New York, NY (Sports Network) - The New York Mets have informed first baseman Carlos Delgado that they will pick up his option for the 2009 season, according to a report in the New York Post.
The 36-year-old’s option is worth $12 million.
Delgado finished the 2008 season with 38 home runs and 115 RBI to go with a .271 average, but his Mets missed the playoffs by a single game for the second straight year.
Also in the Post’s report, the club is close to reaching an agreement on a two-year contract with manager Jerry Manuel.
looks like delgado will be here in 2009 and I agree because he was the best choice for us.
Not surprising.
But, yes, it was the best option and had to be done. I’m also glad they did this quickly to not jerk Delgado around in anyway.
woulda been nice to see the Phillies struggle A LITTLE. Jeez.
Call it hindsight, but I want no part of the Cookie Crumbler Sabathia. He stinks in the post season. The Mets would be stupid to spend 200 mill on him.
The big man coming up small again.
CC Sabathia was somehow able to raise his post season ERA.
anyone who says there’s no such thing as “big game pitchers” and, conversely, guys who aren’t big game pitchers are just plain ignorant.
It’s hard to judge the guy on 4 straight 3 days of rest. it was bound to happen. god forbid it had happened in order to help us.
Agreed. Not that he’s a great big game pitcher … but how can you even tell this postseason when he’s been overused so much?
For obvious reason I am looking forward to the Dodgers-Cubs a lot more than watching this.
TBS really likes to push these start times as close as possible.
Ok, you can put some of the blame on the Brewers for wearing this guy down since he came over to the NL, but he walked the pitcher twice. He’s still going to get his money, but the price might have dropped on him due to his performance tonight.
The Brewer organization still wins out in my eyes. They knew that CC was never signing with them, so they wore out his arm and got to the playoffs for the first time in 26 yrs. This team never had a legitimate chance to win a title. They’ll have to keep building with young players and little pitching next yr.
Yep. They just needed to get in the playoffs. Nothing more, really.
Imagine if Gwynn Jr. was as good as his dad? The Brewers would be awesome…
his stats make Marlon Anderson’s look like MVP numbers. .190 with 1 rbi. you kidding me?
Longoria is better than Wright
Not yet.
he will be very soon
He might be, he might not be.
The Brewers are dead, going down without a fight. 7 pitches in an inning,. No heart, no desire,
kinda like, ohhh nevermind…
Cameron with another stellar play in CF……
Cameron has looked so bad this series.
Jon Heyman reporting that Francisco Rodriguez is looking for the very least 75 million over 5 years, so essentially 15 million a year.
thats what I suspected. We’ll we’d better give it to him then cause we don’t have many other options.
how are we gonna get Manny if we pay so much for Krod
Even you sir, have to admit our #1 priority is a legitimate closer. a decent BP and one starter.
Getting Manny is probably a luxury we can’t afford. He’ll want a longer contract than we should offer (b/c haven’t we learned anything about signing aging stars?), his defensive skills bring nothing to the table and he’s just at that age where his offensive skills could deteriorate quickly.
I’ll agree he’s the reason the Dodgers are in the playoffs, he’s been outstanding. But his attitude in Boston, his antics he put them through before they finally gave him the trade - and all other points above, well, I believe is too high a price.
Now, if he would take a one year contract, that would be a different story….
id give the guys a 3 year contract….i mean even if his offense deteriorates it’ll still be better than Church gauranteed. (I almost wanna say Manny deterioration will be gauranteed as good as Beltran but i know i’ll get attacked)
lol - I remember you now, you’re the Beltran basher….
Sorry, but Manny is not in the same league as Beltran when it comes to defense. Manny doesn’t come close to covering the ground Beltran does and it’s only going to get worse.
You love to bash Church any chance you get huh? You’re not making much of point saying Manny’s production would be better than Church’s when Manny’s production is better than 95% of hitters in the game. Also Church and Manny play different outfield positions so, again, I don’t know why you had to compare him to Church in the first place.
I was just looking in to buying a pair of shea seats but what I saw confused me .. why is it more expensive for NY residents to buy them than any other state resident?
$941.78 for NY residents
$925.50 for FLA residents
$869 for other state residents
whats the deal with that?! .. florida just knocked us out of the playoffs!
b/c Florida OWNS the Mets. Sorry, that was too easy.
Tax
what about theses names? bucholz red sox and jeff francoeur braves think it would be worth it to trade for them? they both struggled this past year.
sign
krod
manny
will ohman
jeremy affelt
derek lowe
we can’t get 3 type a Free agents!!!!!!! pick 2
krod and manny
Wow Cubs are definetley cursed!
I feel bad for going for the Dodgers like this, but I’m thoroughly enjoying watching the Cubs tank. Keep in mind I do not have the disdain some older Mets fans do for the Dodgers from their series’s in the 80’s since I was born in the mid 80’s and don’t remember any of that.
maybe this poor outting by CC will lower his price
so what he is horrible in the post season
at least He can get us there!
then we can bench him when we get there.
oooo man if the dodgers are playing the phillies in the nlcs, im going to be a hardcore dodger fan for one series, then i dont care what happens after that
Dodgers look very good. I wanted the Brewers to go all the way in the NL because I can’t go for the Phils, don’t like LA, and the Cubs would have the worst bandwagon imaginable since the Red Sox if they won it all. The Dodgers were my “realistic” NL pick when the playoffs were set I, obviously, think they can dispatch the Phillies in a 7 game series.
Dodgers going all the way!!!!!!
anyone but the phillies
I will freaking flip out the the Phils make it!!!! I’m def a Rays fan right now but I care much more that the Phils don’t make it to the world series!
2 things
1. joe torre is the playoff master
2. the curse will still live on imo
am i the only one who just loves to hear ronnie’s voice? it’s therapeutic given the current status of the mets. hearing his voice reminds of good times. ok well maybe not good times but times when the mets were at least playing. and tony gwynn’s voice is horrible. he shouldn’t be an announcer. his voice reminds me of the eddie murphy video “raw.” the part where eddie is imitating a white guy talking. that’s what gywnn sounds like. and the other guy talking can’t say the word “error.” he has said it 2,145 times, and he keeps saying, “era.” how annoying!
he has an annoying voice, but I like his insights. I haven’t been watching the playoffs b/c I refuse to watch baseball right now (I might tune in for the World Series), but I know from listening to Gwynn in the past that I really like what he has to say. Doesn’t hurt that he was my favorite non-Met when I was a kid, and I saw him like 3 times at Shea and he had multi-hit games every time I saw him.
it has been very hard for me to even watch baseball since the season ended for the mets. but i live in tampa bay and it was hard not to get into it today. so i’m watching this cubs/la game now and it’s still hard for me to watch baseball. i hope i eventually get over it…
The Cubs collapse will eventually get everyone away from the Mets collapse
maybe, but i’m not concerned with what everyone else is talking about and thinking about. i could care less about the cubs, i’m still hurt over OUR loss.
so when are we gonna sign Manny?
dec 25th
sweet. That would be a pretty sick Christmas present. lol
Manny is amazing.
every time he hits a hr in the playoffs i say to myself
sign him up
didn’t we say that about another outfielder a few years ago?
Don’t get me wrong, I love Beltran, and I’m sure I’d love Manny, but I’m not sure throwing money at an outfielder is the way to go this offseason.
If you’re saying Beltran has been a disappointment, you don’t watch the games.
I almost wanna say F krod lets just get Manny
ill take both
Boras is licking his chops right now.
sorry to say this and of course it will never be proven correct but IMO
manny at trade deadline = playoffs
manny bieng manny can walk on water.
omar must sign manny. he = playoffs. manny and k-rod = world series title
We can always just get Fuentes. Just go after Manny this guy is clutch. Something our offense isn’t!
why cant we just get both
don’t get me wrong. i would love to have manny on the mets but lets be realistic, you have a limited budget and we all know the biggest met need is
1) bullpen
2) starting pitching
3) everyday lineup
i am shocked how we want to blame the hitting. yes, we stunk in the last week but in all fairness, if our bullpen was just bad instead of pathetic we would have won the division going away. mets would have had the best record in baseball if we just blew 1/2 the saves we did.
lets be realistic, we won’t get manny + o. hudson. i think we need a solid righty in the outfield and a whole lot of help in the bullpen.
yeah but our lineup wouldnt have produced us anything in hte playoffs…
GUYS IM HIGH
Man, people were bashing our fans for booing, the Cubs fans are being such babies right now. I guess after 100 years it wears on you, but I can’t recall us ever booing our own players in the 2nd game of a series coming off one our best seasons in a looong time.
I’m glad the TBS announcers were getting on the Cubs fans too.
Get Manny, K-Rod, and trade for Halladay!!!!
Nastyslider,
I want to trade for Halladay as well. However, I think we would have to give up Wright or Reyes to do so. My preference would be to give up Wright.
I’m going to get bashed by everyone for saying it, but those are clearly people who don’t understand how dominant this guy has been in the AL. We don’t have a legitimate #2 starter right now. I am not comfortable going into the season with Maine, Pelfrey, or Derrek Lowe as our #2 starter. Sorry. Gotta give quality to get an ace. An ace who is under a reasonable contract ($14.5MM) for the next 2 yrs.
Why would the Jays want Wright? They have Glaus at 3B and while Wright is much better what would be the point? Glaus and Halladay > Wright and nobody.
Their holes are at 2nd and SS. It would take Reyes. Then you would have to ask a similar question?
Reyes, Burnett/Lowe=> Just Halladay?
AL has a DH.
They could try to sign O-Dog or Furcal. They have Adam Lind who can play 2B. Furcal would be a nice addition. They’ll also have money to sign a few quality pitchers. I’m just saying, they can lose with Halladay and they can lose without him. Why not try to get a young superstar back for him while he still has value? After this season, his value is peaked.
But what I am saying is that if they did trade Halladay it would either be A) we are giving up and want to rebuild. Thus they would want 5+ prospects. Or B) We need to fill all our holes. Thus at that would be 2B, SS, DH, and SP depth with Burnett leaving. If they traded Halladay they would need another SP too. It just does not make sense with the Mets. Now a team like the Braves if they traded Escobar, a top pitching prospect and a 2B then it would make sense.
I think we have to agree to disagree. While Escobar seems to have a lot of talent and promise, he is oft injured and hasn’t produced. I like Escobar too, but David Wright is in a complete other world ahead of Escobar.
I think Toronto would seriously consider a trade for David Wright. That would at least get them to the table to discuss Halladay.
Maybe if their intent was to swing Wright for someone else maybe. I don’t think Escobar is anywhere near Wright. It’s about the package. If the Braves sent them 3 holes they currently have that are MLB ready that package would be better than just Wright.
Like I said, I could see Reyes and Niese for Halladay. I would have to really think about that one though.
I would not trade Reyes in any deal. I think he is way too valuable a commodity, young, and under a very reasonable contract. I think Wright is more expendable and any package topped by David Wright is more attractive than a package of 3 prospects, fronted by a guy who has really just been OK at the major league level - AND who is actually Wright’s age (older by a month) :-)
They are still pitching Zambrano in the 7th in a 6-0 game. What in the hell.
Cubs and Brewers are completely out of gas. The core of this Cubs team needs to be broken up. I would not be shocked if Soriano gets traded in the offseason.
Send him to Shea baby! Oops…. I mean Citi Field.
Haha…I’m serious. I could totally see them trading one of those guys and the fans seem the least happy with Soriano.
I would be glad to take him off their hands. Think he can still play 2B?
I have him playing 2B on my Mets MLB ‘08 (playstation) roster and he is a complete beast. I was able to trade him for Castillo and Alou mid-season! Sigh… If only life was a video game.
2008 Cubs= 2007 Cowboys
no way mets are going to get manny and krod. i would love to but there is no way they will shell that type of money. lets be realistic. plus they still need to sign a perez or a derek lowe to be the 3rd pitcher.
they need a complete overhaul of the bullpen.
i would love for murphy to work out at 2nd base but you just can’t count on a rookie who had only 113 ab to be your everyday starting 2nd baseman.
there is no question that castillo was out of shape. he will never be the castillo of 2003 but he will probably be better than 2008 version. lets hope he comes to spring training in better shape so trading him might be a little easier.
Perez or Derrek Lowe to be the 3rd pitcher? Who will be the 2nd? If you think Maine or Pelfrey are ready for that, I’m not so sure. I think in 2 or 3 yrs, Pelfrey will be our #2.
What’s worse?
1. Getting eliminated from playoff contention on the last regular season game back to back years or..
2.Possibly getting swept back to back years in the NLDS by an NL West team.
Oooof. This Dodgers team reminds me so much of the 1999 Knicks. I think it was 1999 anyway. The strike shortened season that Patrick Ewing missed basically the entire regular season. They snuck into the playoffs as the 8 seed, beat Miami at the buzzer and went on to the Finals.
Well, this Dodgers team got a stud at the trade deadline…and kinda snuck in (they stole the division from Arizona). All I know is, I really hope they beat up on Philly if they see ‘em. I hate that team and their fans.
By the way, nice of them to claim to be holier than thou about Reyes’ antics. I saw Shane Victorino pointing to the sky after he crossed home plate last night. We can all nitpick.
Giving credit to God is a far cry from a fourteen step dance that summons rain in the continental 48 and western Europe.
By the way, so much for that whole “talk when you win a game in the playoffs” taunt.
lol
He was pointing at his father who was sitting behind home plate.
