By Mike Nichols - Oct 3, 2008 3:57 pm

Carl MacGowan of Newsday takes a look at the dismantling of Shea Stadium, which began less than 24 hours after the Mets crushing defeat to the Marlins on Sunday.

Included in MacGowan’s detailed report, is an interesting note about the replica skyline that resides above the outfield scoreboard:

“Yesterday workers removed a facsimile of the city skyline from the top of the giant outfield scoreboard. The skyline will be moved to Citi Field, the Mets’ new ballpark being constructed in a Shea parking lot.”

…interesting…the skyline, like the homerun apple, was one of my favorite nuances about shea…i wonder if it will grace a similiar position inside citi field…

Over at Loge 13, Kingman provides part 2 of his update on Shea Stadium’s deconstruction.

Meanwhile, over at WNBC.com, the station has posted video from Chopper4 showing the progress city workers have made at Shea Stadium and various aerial views of Citi Field.

…as MetsBlog’s Regis Courtemanche said to me in an email earlier today, ‘it’s troubling watching this stuff’…couldn’t agree more, regis, couldn’t agree more…even more troubling, is seeing a pitcure like this...

It’s interesting that every local outlet is covering Shea’s demolition, but no one is talking about Yankee Stadium. Is it sacrilege, like looking at pictures of a corpse? Are the Yankees still refusing to give up on the Wild Card?

It’s troubling, but means ot a positive end. Imagine what a Dodgers fan seeing Ebbett’s field come down must have felt like.

I said that they should save the skyline all along. With the second best moment at Shea Stadium being Mike Piazza’s HR on 9/21,it would only be fitting to save the skyline with the red, white and blue ribbon over the world trade centers.

    • dave27 says:

Agreed…it would be hard to throw that out, and especially replace it with a new one that omits the towers.

In the nbc video you clearly can see the well in center that will house the apple. I think it screams for a new one…and I still say leave the old one right where it is, which will now be outside the gates of CitiField.

It’s tough…there is no other building I’ve gone to for anything near the 26 years I’ve gone to Shea. It’s eerie to see it come down.

I think leaving the apple by the gates would be pretty cool.

I wonder what’s going to happen to the neon ballplayers.

One of my random memories of Shea is looking at the neon through the trees as I left the parking lot after games.

        • dave27 says:

Maybe they can donate them to an 80’s-themed bowling alley or roller rink.

It’d be cool if someone stepped up and installed some of them on the side of a building someplace…

        • mouserdz says:

placing them on the side of a building would be great! I might have to call my landlord about that one. Maybe he’ll get on that as soon as he fixes my toilet.

      • mouserdz says:

I think the mets have already officially announced that there will be a HR apple in the OF. But I think it was decided that they were going to construct a new apple with more bells and whistles. I think the original apple will be kept at the Mets museum, or something like that.

  4. gipper82475 says:

I didn’t think I’d be sad to see it torn down, as it really is past time to have a new stadium….and yet, the pictures engender a lump in the throat.

  5. gipper82475 says:

Ouch…anybody watch the WNBC chopper report? The smug Skankee fan chopper reporter needs some comeuppance. Anybody in Queens with access to a Stinger missile?

  6. 7-train says:

Why is it troubling to see a beautiful Stadium we can all be proud of without that dump Shea next to it? Why do you guys hate progress so much? It disgusts me.

Listen, all the great memories of going to Shea with our dads and moms and aunts and uncles is because we were with our families watching our favorite ball club and players. Shea is a dump. It was always a dump. Have you guys been to any of the other new parks in the game? They’re great. You’re going to like Citi Field so much better than Shea that you’ll all feel like a bunch of dopey crumudgeons for all the whingy whining you’ve done here for months. Relax. Citi is going to be the best thing ever. And the seats will even face the infield so you wont have to twist your body if you’re sitting past 1st or 3rd.

    • MetalMet says:

What? I thought it was natural to sit in the OF sections of Field Level and not be able to see what’s going on if everyone else is standing and you are under 7′ tall!

  7. CleonJones says:

I’d just like to personally thank ownership for excluding me from ever getting to see the Mets play by lowering the stadium’s capacity to 42,000 seats. Brilliant…

    • starz31 says:

sweet..one more ticket for me then.

    • gipper82475 says:

Cleon, they are still selling tickets to the public for those 42,000 seats.

Also, did you not see the approx 10,000 empty sets at Shea during much of the stretch run nor the 20,000-plus empty seats during much of the rest of the year duing weeknight games? The 35,000-plus empty seats in April and May weeknight games?

There will be seats available at Citi. There will be an initial spike in demand to see the new digs….but even so, I guarantee you can get in the building as early as an April series against the Nats or Pirates or whatnot.

Have you been to Safeco, Chase Field, Petco and the like? I have – and trust me, the new digs will be worth it.

  8. metsknight says:

I think it was all a conspiracy. The Mets had to lose that last game so they could start taking the stadium down in time for opening day. The mets go a month into the playoffs, it throws off all of their plans.

  9. MainStMets23 says:

yea, freddy coupons really wants to miss out on all of that post season revenue

  10. steadyeddie says:

that CitiField pic without Shea is freakin’ me out!
All this talk. but to actually see what it will be like…
    sacred ground, man, sacred ground.

  11. metsknight says:

they should outline, the old base paths in yellow under the lines of the parking lot. Nothing like saying im standing where the ball went through buckners legs, or standing at home plate, that would give me the chills.

  12. m29w_12789 says:

Ihave been to Camden Yards, Citizen Bank Park, Nats Park, Comerica, PNC Park. They are all great . Just the wider walkways alone are great. The Phillies , Tigers, Pirates have statues for their Hall Of Famers. THe Phillies , I believe have the outline of the old Vet in the parking lot. The Mets should have a statue of Seaver, and Carter, the only two H of F right now. Im sure Piazza will be in the HOF . Shea was a very special place . Tears ran out of my eyes seeing the Video on Youtube of Shea Goodbye, and the replay last night on SNY. The Apple was nice but a Statue of Mr Mets rising up would be a new touch.
Honestly , the scoreboard at Shea was an eyesore. Big BUd ad on what was a usable scoerboard in its prime. I know there will be plenty of ads at Citi Field, but hopefully they will be placed more appropriately. .
I do have some reservations about the seats I bought from shea. How do I know I won’t get mis match set. The way the video looks is that they are just taking the fronts and backs off and piling them. I honextly thought they would just take the entire unit out and refurbishing it.

    • metsknight says:

they all seem to have some type of labeling, perhaps they just all get takin apart at once, cleaned at once and then put back together. im sure there is a method, ther not just going to send you some crap that mismatched and looks terrible.
