Last year was a collapse, no doubt. The 2007 team lacked fire and had little heart. The expected to win but did little to win. This 2008 club DID NOT collapse. The Phillies played out of their minds the last few weeks of the season and the Brewers fell back to the Mets(they had a four game lead heading into September, I believe). With what the Mets had to work with, they did overachieve in some regard. But that falls on Omar Minaya for not having enough depth on the roster to handle injuries. I like what Omar has done for the most part, and like that he has gotten an extension. But this year he relied on to many older players(Alou, El Duque, Delgado, Pedro, Wagner) and most did not come through, if they even played. I believe he learned from the mistakes he made this year and will be better off for it in the coming years. This team has a good young nucleus to build around. Wright and Reyes were inherited from Steve Phillips, but Omar has brought in Beltran, Santana, Maine, and Church and drafted Murphy, Niese, Kunz, Pelfrey, Evans, Holt, Flores, and F. Martinez. As much as the Mets farm system has been knocked, it was good enough to get Santana from the Twins, and still have enough left over to help the big club when it needed some help(Murphy, Evans). As disappointing as this season was, it did leave me feeling very good about the future of this team. For as much as this Mets club has been badmouthed by the media for lacking leadership and heart, I could not believe the number of times that they would lose a game in heart-breaking fashion to come right back the next day and win like nothing had happened the night before. A team with "no heart" turns losses like that into losing streaks. The Mets didn't let that happen. I was proud with how this team played through some adversity that would have crippled lesser clubs. The bullpen was an absolute disaster. This wasn't the only reason why this team failed to make the playoffs, but it was the main reason. It was surprising to me, just for the fact that each player in the bullpen has had success in the past. It was just one of those things that when it rained, it poured. I also do not fault Omar for not upgrading the pen at the deadline. The prices that the other clubs wanted for relief pitching was unbelievable. You don't give up above average to good prospects for middle of the road relievers(anyone remember Jeff Bagwell for Larry Anderson?). From year to year a bullpen is a crapshoot. Spending prospects or top dollars for relievers is asinine. Relief pitchers are the most inconsistent performers from year to year than any position in any sports. Omar has to balance the long term interests with the here and now. This team will contend for years to come with many of the pieces Omar didn't give up at this year's deadline. This year was disappointing for sure, but unlike a lot of clubs who didn't make the playoffs, this team has a definite future to be excited about.

reyes
beltran
manny
delgado
wright
Murpphy
byrnes/church (if they decide to trade or not)
schnieder

johan
pelf
lowe
maine
niese/pedro(if its a 1 year cheap contract)

Krod
cruz
oliver
smith
feliciano
stokes
parnell

there it is....a solid pen, a decent #2 or 3 starter, and a big, clutch bat in the middle of the order...(i know people dont like the idea of manny but this guy will carry a team to the postseason and through the postseason...the dodgers would not be in the playoffs if they didnt pick him up...and now they swept the cubs and are in the nlcs...)wright moves to the 5 whole where he wont have as much pressure and will perform the way he did a few years ago...top 5 batters stacked...young murphy behind that. solid pen will get it done as well..

TRS86, I love the thought but I'm not sure what it would take to get both. Both guys would significantly upgrade the defense, offense and leadership vacuum. Since we're deaing with Sabean here he may want Schneider, Alou and Duque back... but more likely it would cost THM and Evans.

When it's all said and done, what the Cubs just did (or didn't do) is far worse than what happened to the Mets this season. I mean, the Cubs are just pathetic.

Furioso, I agree that Evans isn't ready for a corner spot yet buy give him some time to develop before you write him off. I think he will be decent in two years or so.

horrendous.....this is the same team. ramon martinez is not a MLer.....Murphy is going to be a disaster at 2B....Kunz should be in the pen, but for the 7th inning. Now is the opportune time to trade Delgado for some value to fill other needs. Free agency can't fix everything!
