Earlier today, “New” Mets Manager Jerry Manuel made his final weekly appearance of the season on WFAN’s afternoon show, Mike’d Up.
In case you missed it, here are a few highlights:
- Manuel does not believe there is a leadership problem nor a cultural or ethnic divide in the clubhouse.
- He said the team will need continue to deal with their September issues until the team breaks through. Manuel believes this will strengthen the team once they make the postseason.
- Manuel was bothered by the team’s poor play the last week of the season.
- He believes his players need to play more team oriented baseball in order for them to be successful.
- Manuel said he should have entrusted more of the other pitchers he had available in the bullpen.
- When discussing the evaluation of his coaches for next season, Manuel stopped short of endorsing Luis Aguayo as the team’s third base coach.
- Manuel will not ‘count out’ Luis Castillo as the team’s second basemen next season.
- He would like to find an everyday position for Daniel Murphy next season.
- Manuel praised an injured Johan Santana for performing under the pressure of a pennant race in New York.
- When asked to describe a team managed by Jerry Manuel, he answered his team is one that “understands the situation, rhythm and flow of the game” and is committed to winning. Manuel singled out Jose Reyes as taking steps in that direction, as evident by stealing bases in more opportune times.
- Manuel was non-committal when asked if the recent criticism towards David Wright and Jose Reyes was warranted, but believes if it is, it can be used as learning tool for their future progression.

In his most recent report for FoxSports.com, Ken Rosenthal lists the Mets as having a 6–to-1 chance of signing free-agent RHP C.C. Sabthia, behind the Yankees and Angels.
Rosenthal also believes Brian Roberts could end up being traded, if he and O’s do not agree on a contract extension.
Lastly, according to Rosenthal, free-agent RHP Brian Fuentes will likely seek a three-year, $38 million deal, similar to what Brad Lidge received from the Phillies.
Rosenthal also discusses whether the White Sox could trade OF Jermaine Dye, what it will cost to acquire Pirates OF Nate McLouth, and where Orlando Hudson could end up, among other things.
…i think hudson is an absolute must for the Mets…i’ve heard and read many baseball pundits compare hudson’s clubhouse energy and leadership abilities to that of former Mets OF Cliff Floyd…the Mets, in my opinion, have missed floyd’s clubhouse presence the last two seasons and hudson may be able to fill that void…problem is, an old, frail and unproductive Luis Castillo currently occupies second base for the next three years…

According to Costello, Sabathia will not go on a ‘whirlwind free agency’ tour and plans to make his decision quickly to avoid a stressful offseason.
With the Mets and Yankees expected to be players for the 28-year-old pitcher’s services, Costello believes location may be a factor in Sabathia’s decision making, as his family is based on the West Coast. Sabathia as quoted by Costello:
“We’ll have to see what direction the teams are going and would my family be uncomfortable being on a whole other coast? We’ll have to see.”
Meanwhile, Jon Heyman of SI.com reports the Mets, Yankees, Dodgers, Giants and Brewers are among the teams interested in Sabathia’s services.
Multiple reports suggest Sabathia, who was a combined 17-10 with a 2.70 ERA in 35 starts for the Indians and Brewers, will seek a seven-year, $150 million this offseason.
…i’m mixed on the idea of the Mets going after sabathia…of course, a tandem of sabathia and Johan Santana would be amazing and easily the most dominant one-two punch in baseball, but sabathia’s work load this season worries me…
…plus, as cerrone stated last week, without a realiable bullpen to hold and save leads, sabathia’s addition may not change things…
