Seven Mets players; Daniel Murphy, pitchers Eddie Kunz, Tobi Stoner, Bobby Parnell, Jason Vargas, infielder Shawn Bowman, and catcher Josh Thole, were assigned to play in the Arizona Fall League.
Their team, the Peoria Saguaros, starts play tomorrow and runs until November 20th.
Interesting to note, Daniel Murphy is listed as a first baseman on the team’s roster.

Greats, sounds interesting.
Nice to see Jason Vargas healthy again. Wasn’t he on the DL all year? Hopefully, they put him back together well.
As for Tobi Stoner? Sounds like he would be a bad influence on the younger players. J/K.
Curious if anyone as any scoop on him or Josh THole. I have not heard a thing about them before this above post.
As for Murph playing 2B. I really dont think he has the range for such a position, especially given the range-challenged Delgado.
We need to be realistic about 2B. Perhaps we do need to look outside for a solution, given that all our internal option seems flawed.
Absolutely right.
Biggest free agent signing this offseason should be Orlando Hudson. Trade Castillo for garbage if you have to. Get him outta here. Even if we have to do another Mota for Estrada type of trade.
All other moves should be through trades.
If we can’t sign Orlando Hudson, then Brian Roberts won’t be a bad acquisition batting behind Reyes.
exactly…..defense is important.
The fact that you think the biggest move this team could make is Orlando Hudson is absolutely unbelievable. This team had an above average to very good offense and starting pitching. The biggest move this could make is a REHAUL of the entire bullpen. I’m not sure why you hate Castillo so much ….. actually, I am sure. It’s because he signed his name to a contract that was offered to him, and you don’t think he deserves that money. Because if you were offered money you knew you didn’t deserve, you’d tell your boss, “no thanks, boss. Save yourself some money and pay me less.” C’mon this is ridiculous. Castillo is a talented player and he’s been injured all season. Can’t a reasonable fan separate that from the issue of his contract? I don’t get it. Of course signing Castillo was a bad move. He’s declining, slowing down, losing his range. But the guy can still hit and if healthy can be a good 2B. I blame Omar for the bad, bad bad signing of Castillo but you know what, to start hating the guy and demand he be traded is irrational and downright stupid. This team needs bullpen help, and here you are calling O-Hudson to be the most important thing the team can do. You’re either 13 years old or you have no idea what this sport is about.
Luis Castillo is bad on defense, offense, and the clubhouse. When he plays, the team more often than now loses. Can’t be said for ANY OTHER PLAYER IN THAT CLUBHOUSE. The day he went on the DL, they started to play well over .600 ball, and led the majors in winning %. The day he came back, they won only 2 series, and played around .500 ball.
He was a baby about being benched. He doesn’t like playing here. He hit .250 this year. His fielding is TERRIBLE. What did this guy do for you to defend him like he’s Mike Piazza?
But he has two World Series rings!
I want Orlando Hudson more than any other player this off-season…
“I like Hudson. I like Hudson a lot. I really do. I like Hudson… I like Hudson… I really like Hudson.”
Tobi Stoner was acquired for Marc Corey and Tony Tarrasco. Josh
And speaking of 2b, where was Anderson Hernandez’s bat all this time?
He sure did a nice job for the lowly Nats.
Wonder why he could not do the same for the Mets.
You can only hit if you actually play.
The 2B job was A Hern’s to lose for much of 2006 and part of 2007. He just couldn’t hit in New York.
Perhaps he’s doing better with the Nats because nothing was expected from them (and him).
It was a short sample during garbage time. Trust me…he won’t hit long-term.
Of course, it’s good to see Vargas healthy, but unfortunately I don’t think he’s show much at all to really get me excited.
Parnell and Kunz will almost certainly be part of the new BP next season.
well i guess its a little interesting that hes listed as 1B. at the same time, though – he is listed as 1B along with 2 other players, while there are no players listed as 2B. So most likely its just a mistake and/or the team is keeping things close to the vest about Murphy playing 2B there so as not to tell other teams that they are planning on trying him there and are desperate to trade Castillo (probably too late to hide that though…)
Was going to post the same, though, I doubt they are “keeping things close to the vest about Murphy playing 2B”.
I’m excited to see how well he does at 2B. If he does well enough, I wonder if they’ll send him to play in the Caribbean League to get more experience at 2B.
Never mind Caribbean League it runs at the same time but with an extra month.
Exactly… at this point, Murphy HAS to be given a sho at 2B
There’s actually no player designated as a 2B on that roster.
with his speed (or lack thereof), perhaps 1B is the right place for him.
Give him experience and then let him be the late inning replacement for Delgado and/or left off the bench.
And he will succeed Delgado in 2010, or sooner if the Mets sign Delgado but then trade him.
Delgado and his contract could be attractive to an american league team.
Think Oakland who always needs some pop. Curious if they would take Delgado and Heilman to Oakland for Street. Key would be no eating of contract.
IF they were able to sign Delgado and then trade him, then they could then sign a heavy bat.
I am rambling. To be honest, I think we need Delgado bacl.
bj upton. 9 regular season hr’s. 3 so far in the playoffs. clutch.
the mets need guys like murphy on the team next year though i doubt he can really play second well. especially turning 2.
i’d kill for this guy on the mets. plus his best friend is david wright.
i’d kill for the nobel peace prize
Murphy is supposed to be the 2B as Cerrone reprted a couple of weeks back.
He is originally an infielder and he’s a great player and hard worker. I see no reason he cant/wont be a very solid all around player.
He is originally a 2bman. Played 2b until his senior year in high school.
As long as I don’t see Castillo at 2nd base next year im happy I don’t care where Murph plays.
guys, is it true that the mets traded kasmir because he had a problem with al leiter in a spring training?. I read that kasmir was listening to music in the clubhouse and leiter didnt like it and told him to turn it off. is this story true?.
This is a five year old rumor. Apparently, Leiter did turn off or ask him to turn down the music. There’s no proof that AL was consulted on whether to keep or trade him. AL had a good relationship with ownership, so some speculated that Kazmir was traded because of this. I think anyone who pushes that rumor is a Jim Duquette apologist. Kazmir was Duquette’s doing.
Yeah…
While the ‘incident’ probably happened, it’s completely ridiculous to make the leap that Leiter had anything to do with the trade. He’s a pitcher, not a GM.
Rumor has it that Al Leiter called Duquette personally and demanded that Kazmir be traded. What started as yelling turned into a shoving match, turned into fist fight, turned into Kazmir getting traded.
thanks for the answer, I wasnt around at that time so I didnt know.
Please, Kazmir was all Wilpons doing. He was untradable all season until wilpon thought we could be in it and said to trade him.
Interesting….perhaps the Mets are listening to the MetsyMadd22 plan…..I’ve been calling for Murph at 1B since the day the season ended.
So Murphy can’t play second base but he can play first, a position he knows even less about? And can’t expect him to put up anywhere near the numbers Delgado put up can you? I think we can all expect him to do more than Castillo would have. So bad call on your part MetsyMad22
I don’t even think it’s that bad of a call. Everyone is on their Delgado high now but 09 is a brand new season and if we’re expecting 2nd half of 2008 from him we’re in for a rude awakening.
I’d love to sign Teixiera to be the big power bat of this team for years to come. It’s unrealistic though, because the team needs K-rod more and I think they’ll throw a ton of money at him. And they should. I don’t care about tendencies and history of closer, this team needs a closer no matter what. It’s that simple, and if thye can’t get Fuentes (who I’d prefer for $ reasons) then they need to sign K-Rod.
how did delgado’s numbers do for us this year? he is a natural 3B, and 1B is a ton easier than 2B. See Miggy Cabrera. He has played a total of 2 weeks at 2B. Negligible training.
You aren’t going to make up Delgado’s numbers. But then, no one on any American League Playoff team has his numbers, and they are in the dance while we arent. You have to give to get, and I think this team needs to get younger, better defensively, and pitching help. Dealing Delgado for an arm while signing O-Dog solves all three of these things.
And for every RBI that Delgado MAY OR MAY NOT COLLECT, an infield of Murphy and Delgado is a TERRIBLE idea and huge defensive liability. We need to TRADE for some bullpen help, young guys who aren’t just tossed around middle relievers like Schow.
How about a transition from third to second made seemlessly in Mets history. See Edgardo Alfonzo. And how are Murphy and Delgado any more of a liability then Castillo and Delgado were this year? His offensive numbers greatly outweigh this risk man it’s a no-brainer. Plus we already have so many holes why make another one at first base.
dan murphy is NOT edgardo alfonzo….please just stop with that…….and delgado and murph versus murph and O-Dog is what I’m talking about. Plus, whenever castillo was there, it made delgado look much worse.
Seems like some sort of typo since he is supposed to be playing 2nd over there…
How do they decide who mets the Arizona league? it seems odd that evans/carp wouldn’t make it, but Shawn Bowman would?
I would think the Mets would want to test Murphy and 2B and determine if he is a prospect there or if they should just consider him a 1B/OF player.
I also think that the AFL is a staging area to show other teams what their prospects can do. Having Murphy there makes sense if the Mets test him at 2B. Evans isn’t going to 2B so there really isn’t a reason to send him. As far as the pitchers, the Mets need to know what they have so that WHEN they rip apart the bullpen, they can determine if any options exist in the system or if they need to gut everyone and start again.
ow about we throw a boat load of money to manny and get him to play left he would love knocking th red sox and yankees off the back pages. trade ryan church and heilman for jj putz. sign orlando hudson and trade castillo and a slew of relievers for d.cabera from baltimore maybe don’t have to give up as much a the orioles were willing to release him recently sign d.lowe for the rotation and you have a rotatin set for yearss if cabera can find a niche if not neise waiting to take over try to get dweathers to help kick these dumb relievers in shape and finally d.rex and n.evans platoon in left. starting lineup

of course the reality of these moves being done is slim to none but i think would work with a few small changes here and there
let me know what you think
I think you know nothing about the rules of free agency. HEY CERRONE CAN YOU MAKE A POST ABOUT THIS SO PEOPLE STOP MAKING LINEUPS FEATURING MORE THAN 2 TYPE A FREE AGENTS.
In 2005 the Mets signed Carlos Beltran (Type A), Pedro Martinez (Type A) and were very close on Carlos Delgado (Type A).
The most current rule states that you can sign three if the total number of Type A & Type B players exceeds a certain threshold. There are so many this year I can’t imagine that more than two can’t be signed.
there aren’t enough for this year.
Matt Thornton is nasty
1 word (it may sound crazy):
REBUILD
all this team needs is a bullpen, a starter to replace perez, a RH bat with power and some depth and they’re good to go
i agree. and considering this team will probably only add around $25-30mil to the yearly payroll it will be easier to spend on the pen and depth.
This is how much I’ve been psychically wounded by this season. When I read the headline for this post “Fall Ball” I thought it was advertising a fundraising party/dance event.
Off topic, I didn’t realize until tonight that the Phillies had 92 wins…the exact # Marlon predicted would win the division…strange…
And how ’bout those Rays?
Anybody thought of getting Pat Burrell to play LF? He’s a big power RH bat, plus it weakens our friends in Philly…If somehow Murphy works out at 2nd, our lineup would be pretty much set, and then you can go balls to the wall on the pitching staff.

Seriously…..burrell???
1. hes old.
2. Hes not great anymore
3. Hes bad defensively
4. HES A PHILLY!!!
horrible defense, doesn’t hit for good average. we need good hitters, not sluggers.
Sign K-Rod and Juan Cruz
Sign Manny
Resign Ollie
Sign either Jon Garland or Brad Penny
Daniel Murphy starting 2B
Bridge of bullpen – internal options and trade imports
not penny and not garland…lowe or burnett
howie kendrick has to be the worst playoff player i’ve ever seen. seriously the dude has left like 20 men on base, and cost his team a TON of runs with poor fielding. If i was an Angels fan I’d wanna kill this guy.
I think way too much is made of this “clutch” gritty player, who knows how to get it done in a big spot, after watching a lot of the playoffs this year.
Pedroia, whose been the poster boy for hard nosed players is hittless in 4 games. Longoria who everyone was annointing the next Reggie Jackson went 0-5 with 3 K’s and 6 LOB. Juan Rivera is hitting .143. Orlando Cabrera with his 2 rings hit a whole ,125 this playoff.
I think too much is made of being clutch or not clutch. Some guys just get hot at the right time. Of course a guy like Alex Rod is different
Not ready to dump the core yet…

*******I forgot Schneider as catcher batting 8th
No apology needed.
I would like to forget Schneider completely.
I am not a fan of his.
Actually, if I had to chose to replace one of Schneider or Castillo, I would replace Schneider.
shouldn’t Nick evans be at winter ball working on his “D”?
