Note: Shea Memento in Cooperstown
By Regis Courtemanche - Oct 9, 2008 7:01 pm

In his blog for Newsday, Anthony Rieber compares the remnants of Yankee Stadium that will be sent to Cooperstown to those from Shea Stadium.

Yankee Stadium include Derek Jeter’s spikes when he set the record for most hits, Jeter’s bat from the final homestand, the spikes used by Jose Molina when he hit the last home run at the stadium, and a bat used by Johnny Damon when he homered during the final game.

From Shea Stadium, a cap and shirt worn by umpire Brian Gorman during the final game.

…i understand that yankee stadium is much more storied than shea, but do i really need to comment on this…ridiculous…

All of Shea’s “artifacts” are currently being sold at auction on Mets.com!!!!

    • rM teM says:

Another example of how the world see’s the Mets.

    • atl0nym4 says:

Brian Gorman was born in Flushing, NY.
His father Tom also an umpire, officiated the 1st game at Shea.

      • metsfrenzy says:

Ok, great. is it possible that we could get soemthing used by one of our players- Seaver, Piazza, Hernandez etc.

Sounds like the Jackie Robinson rotunda idea at Citifield- no relevance to our team

    • jimyager says:

OMG!! It looks like my nightmare will come true, PHILLIES vs. RED SOX in the WS!!! NO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hate both of these teams, its like 1999 all over again. My only hope is that the RAYS win. LETS GO RAYSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!

  2. shannon says:

Something of Beltran’s should be there (his home run)…and maybe Oliver Perez…

    • stone11375 says:

Please, Jose Molina is definitely more HOF material than people like Beltran or Delgado…..

      • Ceetar says:

That the first home run was hit by Babe Ruth, and the last Jose Molina, says a lot about the franchise and the mistake of moving out of the building. The curse lives on.

  3. 1985Mets says:

LOL, you can blame our organization for that. You can only donate these artifacts. Maybe our “non-sound” organization has taken an option to not donate .

It is not cooperstown who chooses what it receives as donations. Its up to the team, organization, or person who must decide what it donate.

  4. deotriniplaya says:

Problem solved…. donate Luis Castillo, and now we have second base open lol

    • bkfitz says:

      Let’s mummify Luis Castillo.

      • njmetfan111 says:

Yes, but there is always the chance of him waking up. I say we send Castillo on an expedition to Jupiter. By the time he comes back, his contract will be long over.

        • deotriniplaya says:

thats a good idea, and if we fill up his shuttle with 1/2 tank of fuel, then we won’t ever have to think about him again and horrible performance, and negativity he had on Jose Reyes & The Team…..Yes i really hate him that much

  5. metsflip says:

    That’s just wrong…

  6. Midtown says:

We should have donated the tophat that the apple comes out of.

  7. Well that’s rotten, but I get solace from knowing their team is in worse shape than the Mets.

They don’t have a real ace, and the chances of them getting Sabathia are poor. They have a lot of ticking time bombs in terms of contracts while the Mets don’t have any.

For what they spent on their payroll, their performance was pitiful.

The snub would be much worse if they were a good team now.

    • And I think their current manager is WORSE than either Willie or Manuel.

      • gipper82475 says:

C’mon now, we all loathe the Skankees, but no team has a worse manager than Willie.

        • You’re joking, right? I think Collapse II has proven that the problem with the Mets wasn’t Willie but rather an inherent major weakness in the bullpen.

Willie has a higher managerial winning percentage than Torre.

And Girardi is truly an awful manager.

        • Reyes es el Rey says:

Except that Joe Torre had a .605 winning percentage with the Yankees. And if you want to make the argument that he had a ton of talent and a huge payroll, well so did Willie.

Willie has a higher winning percentage than Terry Francona, so maybe someone should go tell the Red Sox that there is a superior manager just floating around out there. Or maybe the ChiSox could use an upgrade from Guillen and his measly .534 wp. While we’re at it, go tell the Cards to get rid of LaRussa with his .534.

        • Reyes es el Rey says:

Just to be clear, I do not think that Torre is a great manager. He’s good at the media stuff and handling a clubhouse but not great at in-game strategy. I’m still not sure what Willie was supposed to be good at.

And I think Girardi’s a pretty good manager. Look at the 06 Marlins.

Oh yea and F### the Yankees.

  8. amazin92 says:

i think we should donate a bottle of our tears

  9. mr_met says:

    ahahahaaa…… that’s just sad

  10. soundsoul31 says:

hmmmm, what should be in the hall of fame that can represent Shea?

I know, Mike Piazza and Keith Hernandez

    knock on wood

  11. SPR says:

    MANNY!!!!

(I miss posting her during games. What will I do for SIX MONTHS???)

    • CaveManJoe says:

yeah, sign me up for Manny. 5/85 – done deal – after 3 we can trade him to the AL if need be.

  12. imtiredofguiseppefranco says:

    SIGN HIM UP

let murph play 2nd all fall and winter to get used to it 100%

Manny is a must for ny

we can always sign krod and trade for bullpen arms so everything is accomplished

  13. nastyslider says:

SIGN MANNY! I CARE ABOUT THE RUMORS! GET HIM NOW!!!!

  14. ridethesnake says:

I realize the history behind Yankee Stadium. It’s incredible the amount of great players to have played there over the years. It’s not a knock against the Mets — the great Mets since 1962 and the great Yankees since 1962 are comparable, it’s the amount of history, and the fact that Shea is a dump.

The big story for them was Yankee Stadium coming down, while the big story for us is CitiField going up.

  15. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

I understand the excitement manny generates but honestly i watch him just carry this dodger team to the finish line and through the playoffs and just get angry at how the mets completely BLEW this deal…I really think Omar may have been asleep at the wheel a bit thinking he could only get manny in a straight up deal with boston.

  16. imtiredofguiseppefranco says:

anyone else rooting for the dodgers in this series?

    lol

  17. BringBackDaveTelgheder says:

So sad considering that the Marlins almost had him, the Phils were close to him and we weren’t even involved.

Maybe the Wilpons did tie Omar’s hands..who knows..

  18. nastyslider says:

EVERYONE RUNNING THE METS ORGANIZATION IS STUPID!!

  19. nastyslider says:

FU-CKKKKKK THE PHILLIES ARE GOING TO THE WORLD SERIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • 1985Mets says:

they deserve it, they where the better team. i dont like the phillies but they played harder than the mets,WHEN THEY NEEDED TOO.

Tip my hats to the TEAM, not their FANS

  20. dominicanboy08 says:

man, the HR by utley would have been an out at shea, burrel HR would have been a 2B hit.

if the mets play there, reyes can hit 25 HR,wright 45 HR, delgado 50 and beltran 42 HR.

what a choke of a ballpark.

    • nastyslider says:

Haha true but 45 for Wright and 50 for Delgado is a bit of an exaggeration

      Reyes- 22
      Wright-39
      Delgado-45
      Beltran-35

    • Dr. Alan Lans says:

any thoughts on how CF’s dimensions will affect the offense? I haven’t seen much written about this..

      • gomets6091 says:

I think it’s really impossible to know until they start playing there. The Phillies wanted CBP to play as a pitchers park, but the morons in Philadelphia didn’t factor in that when they tore down Veterans Stadium, the winds would shift, which completely tipped the scales.

  21. 69mets86 says:

    MANNY = TROUBLE

Manny will be great until he doesn’t get his way. He brings nothing to the clubhouse, he is 100% selfish, and he brings tons of baggage.

Look at Boston and LA! Even in LA he is showing signs of “Manny being Manny” Its only a matter of time before the real Manny resurfaces.

I say get Matt Holliday, save the extra money and put it toward Sabathia and K-Rod and let some other team worry about Manny and his tons of baggage

    NOMANNYNOMANNYNOMANNYNOMANNY

  22. Burn_Philly_Down says:

Ya gotta love CBP…gotta love it hahaha. What a joke of a ballpark

    • LA Jeff says:

You guys make as many excuses as your team. Rob Neyer said in ESPN’s chat that the Phillies hit the most home runs in baseball on the road.

      • Did Neyer really say that?

Wow, he must have turned stupid. Because Florida hit the most HRs on the road this year in the majors. The Phillies were 2nd.

Regardless, CBP has been one of the easiet ML parks to hit HRs in since its inception. It certainly gave a big boost to Rollins’ MVP candidacy in 2007. That was a career year for Rollins anyway, and he’ll never have another as good again.

  23. Phillies in NYC says:

    BURN TOILET FLUSHING DOWN!!!

    Hahahahaha….great win tonight Phils!!

Stop the Citizen Bank excuses….Phils hit homers in any park and you know it!

    • Dr. Alan Lans says:

blogging on this site after your victory tonight is a sure indication of extreme insecurity on your part….
Will you promise to come back here when the Phils lose?

  24. Burn_Philly_Down says:

I heard the blueprints were switched with the new little league world series field in williamsport, haha dont try and kid yourselves everyone saw those moonshots today, give me a break.

    • Phillies in NYC says:

Haha sure…..have fun on the golf course in the D.R. with the rest of the Mets lineup

Give Burgos my best while he’s in the klink!

      • Wow, isn’t your head a little big for a fan of a team that’s won just 1 WS in over 120 years?

If I were you, I’d still wear a paper bag over your head until your team wins another one.

  25. Burn_Philly_Down says:

Haha sure you will bud, next you’ll tell me that utley’s hr measured 420 ft.

    • MrDudeAndStuff says:

Why such a chip on your shoulder in regards to the ballpark? The dimensions are within 5-10 feet of the majority of every other ballpark (including Shea). It looks appears deceiving because it has the stands/seats right up at the wall of the fence, where most ballparks have space from the fence to the stands.

Also, the Phils statistically hit more homeruns on the road then at home and have one of the best road records in baseball.

So why everytime they win, you guys make excuses about the ballpark. Last I checked, the opposing team plays in there also.

      • Burn_Philly_Down says:

The dimensions are not the problem, the stadium is fifty feet below street level, therefore there is no wind, and when there is 15-25 mph winds, there is a slight breeze from the gap near the scoreboard to right field. The balls carry unbelievably out of that stadium. Please show me I am wrong, and tell me about the chip on my shoulder, I’m stating the obvious and i just wanted to vent, and why don’t you go and post on your own blog, last time I checked this was a place for mets fans (hence the name “MetsBlog”).

        • MrDudeAndStuff says:

By calling it a little league park and a bandbox, that is talking about the dimensions and resorting to name calling hence the chip on your shoulder.

And I post here from time to time and many Mets fans here have told me that I am welcome to post here anytime. Apparently that invitation isn’t open from you.

        • Burn_Philly_Down says:

I didn’t know there was a defintion regarding to the dimensions of a park when refering to one as a bandbox. Could you tell me if this statement is wrong here, If the ball carried out of Shea like it does out of CBP, i would also refer to it as a bandbox, I don’t really care if i used the “defintion’ of bandbox wrong.

And i really could care less if you posted here or not, I just wish Phillies fan would see both sides of the argument, and wouldn’t completley disagree when someone calls your home field a bandbox.

        • MrDudeAndStuff says:

          From the dictionary:

Bandbox: structure (as a baseball park) having relatively small interior dimensions.

        • CBP has had one of the highest HR rates in baseball since its inception. No doubt about it, it inflates HRs for many of the Philly players. It probably helped Rollins get his MVP in 2007 by inflating his stats.

Also, for each of the last 2 years, your team has hit more HRs at home than on the road so I’m not sure where you’re getting your info from.

It’s a bandbox in the sense that it is definitely a hitters park and a HR park.

        • Burn_Philly_Down says:

I knew that stat was wrong, thanks for the stat check Free.

        • MrDudeAndStuff says:

Sorry, they hit 105 homeruns away and 109 home. So 4 off, but that is near a 50/50.

        • Sorry, but it ain’t even close to 50/50 when you look at every year CBP has been in existence. In every single one of them, the Phillies have hit more HRs at home than on the road. Sometimes the difference is smaller than in other years (like this year) but they always hit more at home than on the road. If you added up the differential since the park’s inception, it ain’t even close to 50/50.

In contrast, the Mets have hit more HRs on the road than at home almost every single year over that same time period. This year has been an exception, and it’s probably because the wind patterns have changed so much at Shea due to the addition of the new park beyond the fences.

  26. darkstar73 says:

are we that self-centered as NY’ers to think that when every stadium closes that they send bats and balls and cleats and what not to the HOF? When the old Pirates stadium closed, did they send anything? I mean, c’mon.

    • But to send an umpire’s uniform? Who wants to see one of those ever under any circumstances?

How about the lineup cards from the last day … or a seat … or home plate? Just about anything would have been better than a meaningless ump’s uniform.

      • Burn_Philly_Down says:

Yea i was in Cooperstown in August, and in the HOF they have a seat from the Vet., I thought that was pretty cool, went to my first game at the Vet. and my grandpa treid to tun me into a phillies fan, haha obviously he failed thanks to my dad…maybe my dad screwed me over, my team could have been 3 games out of a WS this year?. Haha no way one WS championship in 120 years no thanks. Even with the pain of collapse two years running and being at both, I’ll still be a Mets fan till’ the bitter end.

      • 1985Mets says:

Its all up to the METS ORGANIZATION to send these items.

Now its up to COOPERSTOWN to display them…

Now im not sure if the Mets have already sent any items or are not planning too.

  27. Burn_Philly_Down says:

I apologize i said the stadium, I meant the field.

  28. Two-By-Four says:

Ah, Shea Stadium. The first and last games were won by the visiting team and the first homerun and last homerun was hit by a player on the visiting team. There have been a number of great players that have performed in that stadium. Unfortunately, the majority of them have been members of the visiting team. There have been some great moments at Shea, notably in 1969 and 1986, but the greatest moments belong to the Beetles.

Shea Stadium, the only Stadium ever turned into a tomb (Grant’s Tomb). We salute thee (but not at the HOF). :)

    • steadyeddie says:

I’m 54 years old and grew up in Queens. I had some of the most fun and greatest memories at Shea, from childhood thru adulthood. Sorry you did not have that opportunity. Baseball is a whole lot more than winning the pennant “every year”.

      • Two-By-Four says:

Perhaps you can use some remedial education in reading comprehension because I did not say nor imply that it is required to win a pennant “every year.” Nor did I say that winning a pennant” every year” is a requirement for a ballpark to be considered an essential part of baseball history. This has nothing to do with your personal recollection of your childhood. I was just addressing (with a bit of tongue in cheek) why the HOF basically snubbed Shea. Even without the Yankees requirement of winning pennants “each year” Yankee Stadium would still have a special place in baseball history. If you deny this then you know nothing about baseball.

  29. Let’s Go Dodgers!!!

Take pitches vs. Brett “Psycho” Myers. Don’t forget to put one between Pat “The Bat”’s eyes.

  30. Umm… Do we really want to immortalize the last game at Shea by enshrining some player mementos? Remember that the players put the nail in the coffin of this season in that final Shea game. Something to remember? Are we just begging for a curse?
