Several Mets prospects are participating in this season’s Arizona Fall League for the Peoria Saguaros, who are 5-0 in their first week of action.
The following are stats for each Mets prospect playing in the AFL:
3B Shawn Bowman: .545 (6-for-11), 2 2B, 2 HR, 5 RBI
RHP Eddie Kunz: 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 2 BB, 4 K, 3.0 IP
2B Daniel Murphy: .400 (4-for-10), 1 HR, 3 RBI
RHP Bobby Parnell: 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 2 K, 1.0 IP
RHP Tobi Stoner: 1-0, 1.93, 2 BB, 5 K, 4.2 IP
C Josh Thole: 1.67 (1-for-6), 3 BB
LHP Jason Vargas: 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 1 BB, 3 K, 4.0 IP

Where was Parnell on October? He had to be a better option than… all the others! Kunz too!

Kunz’s blog reads more like a personal for a newspaper but I’m hoping they get a little more in depth as the AFL season progresses.
Well, when there aren’t any Mets in the playoffs, I guess you have to take what you can get.
Personally, I’m taking Joe, Manny and the Dodgers in the playoffs.
This is what we are reduced to since there will be no playoffs for us again.
So frustrating to watch the boxscores from the AFL rather than the NLCS
Those are very small sample sizes, but that’s an impressive set of numbers right there. Hopefully they can keep it up for the next 10 to 15 years.

Can we, for once, just not trade people?
So you’d be okay with the Mets going through a sort-of rebuilding/youth-movement for a couple of seasons? If so, I think you’d be in the minority, especially considering how close we’ve come over the last two seasons to being a playoff team.
If it benefitted the bullpen I’d consider it. I’d scour the FA market for some fringe platoon players and one or two bench bats as well before turning to any trade options. It seems like anytime we get a decent player in the minors everyone screams to trade them for an already proven player.
I’d like to hold on to some of the kids too, so on that we agree, but upgrading the bullpen doesn’t help much if we’re playing all the kids because we’re probably not going to win anyway. Yeah, Murphy looked great and Evans has upside, Niese and Parnell seem to have good arms, but if we’re playing these guys every day, the Mets will probably not be competitive. And it’s gonna be tough to upgrade the pen without trading some young talent.
Of course, they said that about the Rays, too, and look where they are.
I’d like to see the kids given a shot. Bullpen arms are generally a crapshoot anyway, so if you’re gonna gamble, gamble with kids.
You do realize that’s exactly what they are right, dont you? All those guys are being showcased for trades. Omar is not sitting back and signing simple fringe players. He will be active on both fronts; FA and Trades. And what better way to show off some young talent than the AFL? Its just a fact of life folks.
what about murph defensivly at 2nd????? and yes parnell should be a reliever next year..
i like eddie kunz as a potential closer, or 8th inning guy, but a few roles i do not believe he will ever grow into are english teacher or novelist. that guy writes like an under-performing 10th grade student. who the hell uses exclamation points that much. he better tone that excitement down before he gets to the mets or mike francesa will call him immature and bush league. i can imagine jose reyes’ writing is like:
“!! I !!! ARE !!! EXCITED !!! FOR !!! NEXT SEASON!!!!”

This is what Toby Hyde had to say about Bowman over at Metsminorleagueblog.com:
Bowman – will try to show he’s healthy and make up for lost time. After missing the better part of three years with back problems, Bowman hit his way out of A-ball, but had a tougher time in AA (.248/.263/.363). Scouts like his actions at third, but are concerned with his longish swing. A nice fall league and he completes the best story in the system this year.
He was drafted in the 12th Round out of HS in 2002, born 12/9/84 so he’ll be 24 at the start of spring training next year. Due to the back problems he never really had a great year. Based solely on stats, he does not appear to have great plate discipline. I think next year is the make or break year for him because of his age and history of injuries. Look for him to start in AA and see where he goes from there.
Wait til late November when the games really count…the Peoria Saguaros will collapse…
