Buzz: Lowe Not Interested In NYC
By Mike Nichols - Oct 16, 2008 8:34 am

According to Ken Rosenthal, at FOXSports.com, teammates of RHP Derek Lowe say he has ‘little interest’ in playing for the Mets or Yankees, adding, “Some rival clubs believe that Lowe wants to stay on the west coast.”

In 34 starts with the Dodgers this season, Lowe, who has 85 career saves, was 14-11 with a 3.24 ERA.

…hmmm, no disrespect to rosenthal, but i wonder what lowe himself thinks about playing in new york…

  1. CaseStreet says:

Give me CC and a platoon of Pedro and Niese.

    • JefJarrett says:

      I honestly don’t think we’re getting CC

And I don’t want Pedro anywhere near this team next year unless hes coaching…..and Neise…..maybe call up mid year…if we’re relying on him to hold down a rotation spot in April…we’ve got bigger problems.

    • Dr. Alan Lans says:

One thing Mr. Rosenthal should know by now – as should all of us – is that it is always, always just about the money.

      • Xavier22 says:

Rosenthal also thought the Mets chances at Santana were slim-to-none.

Sports pundits are paid to write/talk. It quantity over quality.

  2. atlantasnumber1metsfan says:

I don’t want him anyway…completely overrated pitcher…we need bullpen help not starter help…save the money for k rod.

    • JefJarrett says:

K-Rod is not the answer either……..

I see this dude completely melting down in NYC….and we’ll have him for 5 years….

Lowe if he wanted to play in NY would be an awesome pitcher for 3 years in the middle of this rotation. I don’t know how he can be described as overrated….he is not an ace…but he is certainly solid.

  3. npanzeca says:

Translation: I don’t want the pressure of NYC. This is not the type of player we want.

    • RJ44 says:

or translation: He doesn’t want to play in NY. Why does there have to be some hidden meaning behind the statement.

      • npanzeca says:

Or maybe he doesn’t like the schools….lol. Many players don’t like the pressure of NY. Those are not players that we want.

        • dcmetsfan says:

The guy played for a good chunk of his career in Boston. You may have noticed this, but Boston is a tad bit obsessive about their baseball team up there. No, it’s not quite as pressure-packed as NYC, but it’s pretty close. So I’m going to guess an aversion to being in a pressure-packed environment is not something holding him back.

      • Dr. Alan Lans says:

translation: it’s going to cost you

    • ravi3 says:

Please…he dealt with more pressure on the 2004 Sox playoff team then he will anywhere else

  4. Peter says:

    Jon Garland please . . .

    • Dr. Alan Lans says:

Yes I like Garland as well. We should sign him.

      • Kellman says:

Are you his father or something? He’s awful.

        • Dr. Alan Lans says:

One doesn’t have to be related to a player to want him on his team

        • Sylar says:

One however does have to be crazy to want Garland.

Garland 2008: 4.90 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, less than 100 Ks, less than 200 IP

          Lowe: 3.24 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 147 K, 211 IP

        • Dr. Alan Lans says:

Look at the stats for his career – not just last year. It’s really not that crazy an idea.

    • Yea. Let’s get John Garland. Your results will basically be no better than Fredy Garcia or Bartolo Colon.

John Garland isn’t a power strikeout pitcher, plus he is a lefty that these Phillies will eat up for the length of his contract. We have way too many pitch to contact pitchers as it is. If we aren’t going top tier in the free agent starting pitcher category (CC, Sheets [i wouldn't go there], or Lowe [top in this group]), I think we should stay out of it altogether and re-sign Ollie, go after K-Rod and Joe Beimel, then at least make a respectable offer for Manny.

      • beltran the warrior says:

        garland’s a righty, chief.

        • RJ44 says:

There’s the response of the day. LOL

        • Meant to say he isn’t a lefty, chief. You know, because all of the Phillies power hitters are righty (like Howard and Utley), so a lefty would certainly neutralize them. Not to mention the comparison to other righties (Colon and Garcia). But I don’t need to prove my baseball fandom to you.

But I do agree that Beltran is a helluva ballplayer. Who cares that he is a lefty batter? :-)

      • Dr. Alan Lans says:

First of all you should know what you’re talking about. Garland is right handed. He’s also won 18 games twice in his career and is imo, been more consistent than Ollie. Ollie has a great upside but really, how long are we going to be discussing his potential?
I would like to keep Ollie if he’s not asking for the moon but being a Boras client I’m sure he will.

        • I know Garland is right handed. I’m not concerned as much with his right handedness, as I am with his not being a left hander. Don’t want to go into this season with 4 righties in the rotation (I’m keeping Niese, a lefty, out of the rotation for now). If we do that, we will get pounded by Philly. Although, it seems as though we have more trouble with the Marlins and Nats, predominantly right handed hitting teams.

        • And good Dr., I know what I’m talking about. “is” should be replaced by “isn’t”. Perhaps you could have used a little bit of your medical school intuition and seen the comparisons I drew were to other right handers (Colon and Garcia). But I bet you were also the same guy screaming that we didn’t need Johan this year. Were you screaming for Blanton as well? He looked so good with Philly.

        • Dr. Alan Lans says:

          settle down there 09….

first off, Colon and Garcia are coming off injuries. Not the same thing.
And second I was completely in favor of Johan and never wanted Blanton. Not sure where you’re getting that from.

        • Dr. Alan Lans says:

By the way, when you start a sentence, you capitalize the first letter of that sentence. Since we’re talkin’ grammer.

        • therealsince86 says:

Eh Garland would not be bad as he is a type B FA and will not cost the same as the others. He would be a great #4-5 starter and take some pressure off having to start Niese. Also, look at it as a back up plan to Maine being injured.

  5. iamatwork says:

I don’t think he liked playing in Boston and I think the same would be for NY.

    • iso says:

he came back to the opening day WS ceremony in 2005(once he was already a Dodger) at Fenway wearing a Red Sox jersey. How can you really say that he did not like playing in Boston ??

  6. steadyeddie says:

Hate to break up the party, but there will be no sexy, big name FA signings by this NY team. They need to justify what is already a outlandish payroll! Look for tinkering and no-names and scrape heap guys. Even with the new stadium, this team has more pork than Pigily Wiggly.

    • Gland says:

      Doubtful.

    • I agree they should be cautious when signing big name free agents. However, they are slashing roughly $30MM from the payroll? That is enough to sign one big name and many scrap heap guys.

I think that big name should be Manny or K-Rod. Ollie should also be re-signed for a 4 yr deal. Let’s face it, he neutralized the Philly lineup.

I think Manny would be the most important signing because of a few reasons: we already know we are getting little to no production out of 2B, unless Murph proves he can field the position – otherwise, it’s a disaster; we already know we are going to get little to no production from our catching position unless schneider discovers HGH. If we don’t get a big bat in this lineup, we will be forced to roll the dice on a big bat when we lose Delgado’s after this year. We will also be forced to watch this putrid lineup, with a 6-9 of (Church – who will remain a question mark til he bounces back, Castillo, Schneider, Pitcher).

      • npanzeca says:

Castillo won’t be a factor unless its for another team.

      • Gland says:

They are going to have to do a few things via free agency. They don’t have the trade chips to fill all of their holes that way.

      • mboone6986 says:

Manny for 3 years would be good…..but i’m sure he is looking at 5……..I think pitching is a bigger concern……a starter to eat some innings

      • Dr. Alan Lans says:

I have to admit I would like to see Manny out in left field and batting in the 5 hole after Wright.

        • I would have to admit, if you think Manny would bat behind Wright, you’re insane. Manny would bat 3rd or cleanup. He would be far and away the best hitter on the team.

        • Dr. Alan Lans says:

Not insane at all my friend. Putting him behind Wright would give Wright lots of good pitches to hit as they wouldn’t want to put him on base in front of Manny. Having Manny in front of others negates his ability to drive in runs. That’s what made Big Papi so good in Boston with Manny behind him. It’s really a good problem to have though – I’ll take it either way..lol.

        • hjhjhjhjhj says:

wright 3rd, manny 4th…not rocket science here people

  7. cgpublic says:

It may be less the location then the present composition of the NYM. There is a stink emanating from the flatlands of Flushing, and it’s not the former landfill.

Given his available options on the West Coast, why would Lowe or any other major free agent that can write their own ticket want to come to the Mets? Given the overwhelming negativity surrounding this team as result of two consecutive years of total failure, it’s going to take mucho ducats to convince Lowe or anyone else to make the jump.

Time to open up the windows and get rid of a stink not even the new stadium can disperse.

    • Dr. Alan Lans says:

well gosh that’s positive thinking at work!

      • cgpublic says:

Isn’t reality a bitch? Lowe and every other major free agent will replay Met ‘fans’ booing Santana as he walked off the mound and simply say to themselves who needs that BS.

        • Dr. Alan Lans says:

Please – the guy pitched in Boston. He knows what the deal is. Plus I don’t think these players give a rat’s pitutti about replays of fans. It’s all about the moola my friend.

    • Gland says:

You know the article said “Mets or Yankees”. But don’t let that get in the way of your anti-Mets rant.

      • cgpublic says:

The Yankees have their own set of issues, beginning with Hank and ending with the fact Lowe is a former player for the Boston Red Sox, that makes the Bronx just as unappealing as the Mets.

  8. Nordberg says:

According to si.com, Manny is seeking a 6 year, 25 mill per year deal! I think perhaps his dreads are wrapped too tight….

    • mboone6986 says:

Agreed, I hope the Mets don’t consider that

      • nagel100 says:

manny is the white elephant in the room.

You know omar would take him at the right price.

what is that price? not 25 for 6. manny is good for a 3 year deal max. not 4 not 5 but 3.

Manny would free up Fmart for inclusion in a deal for a starter. What does Fmart/Heilman get you? Perhaps a #4 guy for the rotation.

The rest of the available money should be spent on the bullpen.

        • Gina says:

I don’t really think it would make much sense to trade a 19/20 year old prospect, who’s struggles have lowered his valuve a lot, for a back end of the rotation guy because you have a 37 year old. If anything filling the spot with a guy who we’d only be expecting to get at most 3 years of production from would make holding onto F-mart more important.

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

I reported the other day that I heard Manny was looking for 25 mil a year for 4 years. Several of my fellow bloggers said that had to me a rumor, he was not asking for that much. Good to know some other source has bascially the same info.

And that’s just crazy. We’re not getting Manny. I wouldn’t give him anymore than 2 years. Did we not learn our lesson in LF with aging power hitters already?

      • Gina says:

Yeah most sources I’ve heard have said 5 years so I definitely don’t see where those other bloggers were getting their information from.

        • bigchart333 says:

play hardball with manny and his insane, anti-christ agent

drop a contract in his lap, 2 years 28 mil per (high price to compensate lack of years)

then a 3rd and maybe 4th year options at 25 per if he finishes in the top 3 MVP voting in year one or year 2, or if the mets win the WS

Tell them both “We want your response in 72 hours or we’re pulling the offer off the table”

dont play games with these 2…anyone of us will take manny for a couple of years, but then the latter 2 is where you’re looking at problems. So if u add the incentives, maybe he plays hard all year long. And dont get into any stupid negotiation tactics. Wow him with money, offer options, give them 3 days, and if nothing, move on.

  9. mouserdz says:

Even though it is a teammate, it’s consistent with what I posted a week or so ago, that I heard from Lowe’s best friend that Lowe wanted to stay in LA, or if he came east, it would be back to Boston.

  10. therealsince86 says:

Lowe would be nice. I would not read anything into rumors yet. If no Lowe then I would go with Garland and Perez I guess unless there is a guy you want to take a chance on besides Perez. I would still rather have his picks.
    You could do worse than
Johan, Pelfrey, Ollie, Maine, Garland. I have not seen reports on Garland. I am guessing 4/44?
