On Tuesday, SNY’s Ted Berg and I took a quick tour of Shea Stadium, which is now no longer open to the public.
The following is a short video of our trip around the ballpark, and, yes, I hurt my knee on that jump:

SAVE SHEA STADIUM!! (say that 5 times fast)
i just said it 5 times fast, sethman. it’s not too much of a tongue twister. Try saying this 5 times fast:
The Pathetic Phillies are in the World Series.
Oh Ouch Omar Owes
Oh Man…I Just Threw up!
Boscov, Is that supposed to be funny? Work on the punchline and get over your obsession with the Philles. Every single one of your blogs has Phillies topics. Shouldn’t you people be focusing on your old, overpaid, and overrated choking team and not the Phils?
speaking of choking has myers seen his wife yet?? he claims she likes auto erotic asphyxiation :P
Rusty Jr? If you are gay enough to have been named that I wouldn’t advertise it.
It’s not actually *the* last tour, is it? “You see where that 1982 Chevy is parked? That’s where Ron Swoboda made an amazing catch in the 1969 World Series!”
I saw that game and that catch! Lots of memories at Shea….
Matt:
NIce Job !!!! Please update us , with photos or videos when the heavy equipment comes in and the stands are taken down. Hey when can I expect to get my orange seats ? If anyone know please post
Mets baseball has officially “jumped the shark”
i love the shots of them walking in and out with their backpacks on like little kids.
it is sad to see that place go - even sadder that i’m still bitter and heartbroken anytime I catch a glimpse of a postseason game.
there is no way that i can watch the world series with the phillies in it - even to root against them… unless it happens to be a beating like the sox took from the rays the other night.
I know how you feel, but it is still baseball. It’s a long, cold winter ahead so just enjoy it for what it is — baseball. And who knows — you might actually get to see the Phils lose something. :-)
Glad you guys are having a good time….
So, uh, what’d you guys steal?
great video matt, looks like you had a good time.
cant believe you f’kers threw out the last pitch at shea stadium
it’s so sad… so what happens to the hr apple? no transfer to citi?
Don’t worry, you’ll see the apple again! I read in an earlier blog post that “…the Mets have a solid core for 2009.” Heh, heh, couldn’t resist.
When do the wrecking balls arrive? How long will that take?
They’re not using a wrecking ball, they’re just going to let the relief potchers blow it. OK, I’ll shut up now…
good one!
who got the first shot heilman sisk rojas benitez mota or rich rodriguez?
“Citigroup Reports $2.8 Billion Loss”
citifield to be renamed: “bailed out by the tax payer field”
geez I hope we don’t have another Enron situation on our hands…
or Federal Reserve Field. We’d call it the Fed for short. The Fed Faithful does have a nice ring to it!
Fed Field - I like it
hows about bush feild - where your hopes and dreams crash and burn like our president before his sobriety?? :P
pitchers
test
2-0 Rays already. B.J. Upton- 9 regular season HR’s, 6 in the playoffs.
Go through their lineup and stats. Us Met fans are WAY too enamored by numbers. They don’t mean that much. It’s a team game. The Rays have zero .300 hitters and 1 guy who got 30 hrs and 1 guy who got 100 rbis (Pena).
You need to get contributions from everyone and have people step up in the clutch. The Rays are the anti-Mets, and the more I watch the sadder I get.
I saw the team stats as well and this is a very good point. Character is important - not just stats. We don’t need to field an all-star at every position like the Yanks try to do.
The thing is this town is not kind to building up franchises from thr ground up. It has become win now at any cost.
Aside form the bullpen, the character and mental make-up of this team is the main thing that needs to change for next year and should be the main consideration in trade discussions - with everybody on the table.
gotta give maddon alot of credit with the team he feilds - mostly rookies - no big name stars with big contracts and a grizzled vetern who leads ( cliffy)
guys did u notice ted berg looks like matthew broderick and cerrone looked like bobby flay?? .. for some stupid reason when i was watching the piece corey feldman and corey haim came to mind matt are u2 lost boys??
well it looks like rays / shills in the world series - rays will dominate and take the whole thing in 5 games
That’s my prediction too. Rays in 5.
I’ve watched all these post season games. Was so obvious to me is above all teams, this mostly young group of Rays just exude confidence - not even cockiness, just plain, old fashioned confidence.
The Phils? They always looked like they were playing with that deer in the headlights look - just waiting for the other shoe to drop. To me, they don’t even compare to this Rays team….
Obviously written before the end of the game, eh?
What makes you so special that you get to go on the field at Shea?
Just because you write a blog…
Don’t hate. It’s not just a blog, its Metsblog and without it you’d never see these kind of behind the scenes looks.
teddy, you gained some LBs…. you on the matt stairs diet?
Nice job, Matt and Ted. Even though this is such a sad and traumatic thing for me, this was a nice way to dampen the blow a little - to have a couple of blog-friends give us a final tour with the love. Thanks!
Nice job, guys. Very sad to see Shea like that. Even sadder knowing if Omar had paid more attention to the bullpen, the Stadium would most likely still be totally intact, in pristine condition, and waiting to host the WS right now.
