Marcus writes:
“He may have finished his career hitting .251, but he was much more valuable than that.”
“Currently, he is the hitting coach for the Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, and is working his way towards being on the staff of a major league baseball team.”
Here is a YouTube tribute to “the greatest utility player to ever play the game”.
…i’m still amazed by the exaggerated fascination with mcewing…it just goes to show how far hustle, hard-work, and humility goes in terms of likability…

Price writes:
“Go on any Phillies message board, look at the banners in their tiny little stadium, find any fan who is somewhat sober (good luck) and you will find the phrase “Ya Gotta Believe.”
“Yes, the late McGraw coined the phrase and was a great Phillie. But any real baseball fan will tell you “Ya Gotta Believe” is a McGraw/Met thing, not a McGraw thing than can be transferred from one franchise to another.”
…that’s like mets fans waving rally monkeys or screaming “fire isiah”, it just doesn’t make sense…
In report on Sunday in the New York Post, Joel Sherman wrote that the Mets will probably have to ‘take on another headache,’ if they want to trade Luis Castillo to another team.
According to Sherman, citing an executive familiar with the talks, “The Mets and Royals had discussions in July about swapping expensive malcontent outfielder Jose Guillen for Castillo.”
Guillen will earn $24 million for the next two
seasons, while Castillo is due to make $18 million for the next three.
In 153 games for the Royals in 2008, Guillen hit .264 with 20 HR and 97 RBI.
He hit .290 in 153 games for Seattle in 2007.
Guillen has played for nine different teams during the last eight years.
Sherman also writes, ‘The D’Backs considered Eric Byrnes for Castillo, but determined they just don’t like Castillo at all.’
Sherman also reports on whether Pat Burrell will be back in Philadelphia, whether the Dodgers may trade C Russell Martin, and whether the Padres will move 1B Adrian Gonzalez and Jake Peavy, who the Mets have yet to show any interest in.
The Mets have begun e-mailing previous ticket-plan owners from Shea Stadium, writing, “We are pleased to advise that we will have a selection of Ticket Plan offerings at Citi Field for our loyal Ticket Plan account holders prior to sales to the general public…We will communicate these offerings to you in the weeks ahead.”
According to the e-mail, the team will offer two 40–game and five 15–game plans that will enable them to accommodate each 2008 ticket plan holder with a plan for 2009.
…it was always their plan to determine how many full season plans they might sell, then open up information regarding partial plans…as a sunday plan holder for several years i’m glad the option is atleast available to me, but i’m still curious to see how much these 15 packs will cost…
Tagged Regis Courtemanche |In an article for Newsday, Ken Davidoff notes where 2007 NL Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy is likely to land if traded.
The Braves, Cardinals, Brewers, and Astros are the potential front-runners to acquire Peavy based on the young talent they have to trade to San Diego.
However, the Mets aren’t included in that list because as Davidoff writes:
“One official from another team said this past week that Peavy, who was born and still lives in Alabama, “hates” New York anyway.”
…i don’t blame peavy if he did say this…the hunting isn’t very good in the city unless it’s rat season…
