News: Brewers Interested in Willie
By Regis Courtemanche - Oct 21, 2008 8:20 am

According to Adam Rubin at the Daily News, Willie Randolph is among the leading candidates for the Brewers managerial job.

Rubin writes:

“Milwaukee GM Doug Melvin, after informing interim manager Dale Sveum that he wouldn’t be retained, indicated he wanted to hire a skipper with managerial experience and a track record of success.”

The Mets owe Randolph $2.25 million if he does not work next year.

i love this blog but who cares what willie is doing…

  2. Danny says:

This only excites me if it means that we don’t have to pay him next year.

  3. metfan24 says:

y would the brewers even bother next year if they get willie

Good for Willie. He was the wrong guy for the job here after the collapse. Most of us know that it was not really his fault and will now admit that he should not have been brought back. However, he will be very successful outside of NY if that is the road he choses.
Now back to the Mets please.

Yeah, I think he did a good job, and it wasn’t his fault. It was probably time for a change, even if it didn’t work and it’s again time for a change. I think he’d do a good job over there.

“Yeah, I think he did a good job, and it wasn’t his fault.”

Guillermo Mota by himself disproves this statement; but if you need more evidence, look no further than Jose Valentin, Julio Franco, Paul LoDuca, Sean Green, and Lastings Milledge.

        • Ceetar says:

          Your players make no sense.

Manuel failed with the bullpen this year too, with almost twice as many options. Either it wasn’t the managing that was the problem, or they both failed at it.

Valentin was a big contributor. Franco was fine in ‘06, wore out his welcome in ‘07 and was gone. Maybe Willie played him a couple of times too many? LoDuca was..LoDuca, I can’t even imagine what you’re gettingat here. The same with Green and Milledge. I don’t know why I’m even bothering responding.

Jorge Sosa was a solid 5th starter and Willie tried to make him Carlos Marmol.

        • ridethesnake says:

By the way, when you say “it” wasn’t his fault, what are you referring to? If he was any good, there should be no “it” at all!

And how can you then go on to say “it was probably time for a change” for a manager that had been doing a good job for three years? How does that make sense? Manuel may not be the answer, but to me, a manager doing a good job manages his way into the playoffs with a 7 game lead and 17 to go, no questions asked. That alone was horrific managing and worthy of losing one’s job.

        • Ceetar says:

Honestly, I feel like the 7 with 17 is a small argument. Managers, terms of morale and leadership anyway, probably have a slow impact over time.

I’m referring to the team’s poor finishing ability. It’s not like Willie pulled out the starters for third games of series, or rested any regulars or played the last couple of weeks like spring training.

When I say it was probably time for a change, all I mean is that maybe the team needed change for changes sake, fresh perspective. If they did, they didn’t get it. It needs to be outside the organization. (Which is where Manuel should be)

      Well said.

    LETS GO TAMPA BAY!!!

  6. Coolpapabell says:

I am very intersted to see how he handles that young Brewers team in a competetive NL Central. Now we can see if he is any good or not.

  7. Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Let’s see how Braun and Fielder react when Willie tells the media that they are young players and haven’t done enough to be considered great hitters yet.

  8. SovereignRonnie says:

Randolph + Mota = stuff nightmares are made of

  9. bkfitz says:

They’ll fire him after 2.5 years just like we did.

  10. KFS says:

hahaha, I can’t wait to see how he manages that bullpen.

  11. upstatemet says:

Manuel did a musical chairs bullpen even more so than Willie. I hope Willie gets it and we’ll all be interested to see how he does, it’s human nature. I know Joe Torre was a great story this year and I was really hoping he made it and made Steinbrenner twist in the wind.

  12. My Favorite Baseball Squadron says:

No CC and no Sheets probably means the Brewers aren’t going to be as good next year. I know Parra and Gallardo are supposed to have a decent upside but they’re going to have a tough time repeating this year’s success (even if they nearly kicked away the season over the last month). Braun will still be a monster, but I get the feeling that Prince is beginning to wear out his welcome and their bullpen at times gave the Mets a run for their money as most combustible in the NL.

  13. mr_met says:

willie looks like he’s got a bookbag going on on his shoulders in that picture

  14. TurboDan says:

I care what’s going on with Willie. It’s gossip stuff, fun stuff. It’s not like we have any Mets baseball to watch.

  15. patrick says:

I guess this really becomes Randolph’s baseball IQ test.

If he accepts a position with the Brewers, that will almost certainly pay less than what he stands to make by reading the funny pages all of 2009 he is really not fit to manage a major league baseball team.

The Brewers are almost ceratinly going to lose Sabathia and Sheets.

  16. steadyeddie says:

    why is Willie wearing ledenhosen?
does he yodel after each lose?
