Note: David Wright plays Web-Gem Defense
By Matthew Cerrone - Oct 21, 2008 11:23 am

Last night, ESPN’s Baseball Tonight named David Wright as the league’s Best Infield Web-Gem Maker for 2008.

Wright’s diving catch in foul territory against the Phillies was also named the best Web Gem for a third baseman.

…Rawlings usually announces its Gold Glove winners in the week or so following the World Series…i have to think wright will win the NL Gold Glove at third base for the second-consecutive season…

…i still feel wright’s arm is an issue, at least from time to time…

…that said, he has a tremendous glove…and he’s getting better

    Congrats D-Wright…

    • Furioso says:

yeah, congrats on winning an “award” even less important than an ESPY while the Phils are playing in the WS

Oh well, take what you can get I suppose

  2. Lidge=Mitch Williams says:

Kudos. Carry it over into the 09 season…and win the division. LOL. Go Mets!

  3. amazin82 says:

It was a great play and he deserves the Web Gem because he does make some unbelievable grabs.

Gold Glove – he’ll take it and he’s a solid candidate, but every play where he’s got too much time and does that double tap, I’m gonna be a little nervous.

    • Boscov says:

The fact that David Wright is even in the running for a gold Gloves, let alone the fact that he’s won one, is just a reflection of how pathetic these awards are. Anyone who watches this guy play 3B every day knows he’s NO gold glover out there. I’d say he’s good and improving, working at it. But then someone will take numbers out and throw them out to defend him. It’s hogwash to me. He’s not 3/4 the third baseman that Zimmerman is and I’m not going to go through every team’s 3B right now but David Wright is NOT a Gold Glove 3B.

      • ridethesnake says:

yeah — but he is a web gem 3bman, with that barehanded grab in SD and this one… but inconsistent, totally

      • If, incidentally, you find yourself interested in the numbers, you’ll see Zimmerman ever-so-slightly on top of Wright in all the statistical categories (like FPCT, ZR, E/G).

On paper it’s really close and since I didn’t watch every Nationals game, I can’t say whether or not Zimmerman has made as many sensational plays, which would be a tiebreaker. Also Zimmerman only played in 104 games to David Wright’s 159, if that counts for anything.

Troy Glaus had the best year statistically for 3B in the NL. Then probably Pedro Feliz, Kevin Kouzmanoff, Zimmerman, Wright, and Chipper Jones.

    sweet!

    • Boscov says:

And just one more point of note, it’s a sad reflection on the Mets fan base that people are actually wasting energy talking about how Victorino posed as Jose Reyes rounding 2nd, how the Phillies ’stole’ the Mets slogan, I understand there’s no baseball anymore and it’s a blog and ppl have opinions yadda yadda yadda bla bla bla the only opinion I have right now is that with a decent bullpen it could be the Mets in the world series EASILY because with a decent bullpen they would have finished above the Phillies.

      • loqiel says:

I couldn’t agree more. I went to several Mets-Phils games with my brother (I’m a Phils fan, he’s a Mets fan) and every time the Mets starter would leave, he developed this look of impending doom on his face. I realize that’s how I must have looked up until this year with the Phils bringing the likes of Jose Mesa and Antonio Alfonseca out of the ‘pen.

Bottom line is if the Mets have an average bullpen, they could still be playing.

Then again, if I had a million dollars, I wouldn’t be at work either.

  5. 4JoeOrsulak says:

His arm improved by leaps and bounds n the second half. Carlos Delgado had to save him a few times, but more often than not he was right on the money.

Zimmerman and Feliz are still better, but neither played enough this year, so he might deserve the Gold Glove.

    • hjhjhjhjhj says:

      what is your point?

    • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

That’s not how the gold glove is determined. It’s by vote. Wright won it last year, but do you think he had the best percentage? Heck no.

    • Prismo says:

And where’s your research on how many + plays each 3rd baseman makes?

      • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Exactly. Maybe Troy Glaus and Pedro Feliz don’t make many errors, but I never see them laying out and making diving plays and off balanced throws as much as Wright does. That kind of stuff is what the voters remember.

  7. kingman 26 says:

Plus, Wright is not given enough credit for being about the best I have ever seen at charging in, bare-handing the ball, making an off-balance throw, and still getting the runner at first. He is amazing at that play.

    • blow me says:

totally agree…DW might have a suspect arm and an issue w/making the easy throws at times, but i dont think there is anyone who charges the ball and makes the bare-handed play as consistently and smoothly as dee-dubs!

  8. Dirtysanchez says:

I think Dwright is a good fielder and i love his work ethic. You can tell he is getting better. That being said idk if he will get the gold glove.

  9. mrBill aka DWright says:

David Wright as the league’s Best Infield Web-Gem Maker for 2008……………Haaa, PLEASE!!!

  10. guierllNO MOta says:

I believe his point is that Glaus, Zimmerman, Feliz (all obvious) and I guess Kuzmanoff all play better defense than Wright….

I make this point all the time, as someone who watches 162 Mets games and a bunch of Nats games too there is no way in he-l-l that Wright has a better glove than Zimmerman, none, period, end of story, thats like saying Jeter deserves the gold glove cause of the one play he can make….

I am not discounting Wright, he is a very good 3B…but he is no Zimmerman, Rolen, Arod, Lowell or Feliz @ 3rd, those guys are all well better than Wright and I’m prob. missing some such as Eric Chavez.

If you dont think those guys are better DEFENSIVELY than Wright please take the blinders off…the only Mets who deserve the gold gloves this year are Beltran and maybe Schneider, although I think Kendall gets it, but the Schneid is def #2….Reyes and Johan made way way way too many errors to be considered legit and Church didnt play enough but maybe he’ll pull a Palmeiro and win anyways.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

guys like chan said its espns web jem..not based on statistics but flashy plays….apparently the gold glove goes by vote as well.

      • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Yep, it is voted on by the managers and coaches of all the teams in the league and they cannot vote for their own players.

    • 4JoeOrsulak says:

      Schneider??????? Wha-wha-wha-what?????

Zimmerman and Feliz didn’t play that much, and ZR is not without it’s flaws.

DW made a ton of awesome plays…particularly in those late-season slumps when he couldn’t buy a hit. He made up for it with unbelievable defense.

There are far worse baseball injustices than Wright winning a Gold Glove. It’s really nothing to get worked up about. He may not be the best, but he’s darn good.

    • ravi3 says:

Umm…Johan made all of 1 error this season.

    • LGNYM says:

Schneider or Kendall gold gloves? Is this serious?

As for Wright, I wouldn’t say any of those guys you mentioned are “well better” except for Rolen, but he’s getting older and has had problems staying healthy these past few yrs. As for the GG, Zimmerman and Feliz both started just a shade over 100 gms, Wright played about 500 more innings than either of those guys. When you don’t play enough, you shouldn’t be getting awards IMO.

And Johan made one error this y, so I don’t know how that = “way way way too many errors”

  11. attgig says:

What is the gold glove award for? is it for the best defensive player? or is it more like the web gem award, for the guy who can make the flashiest plays?

if it’s for the best defensive player, there is no way DWright should win it.

He’ll make the craziest of plays, but he can NOT handle the routine plays. I saw it last year, and I still saw it this past year. When he gets the ball, and has too much time to think, he gets wild with his throws. Those flashy plays… he somehow gets to the ball, and just has to gun the ball over, and he’ll make spot on throws.

  12. gamblor says:

D.Wright had the second highest RZR and the second most OOZ plays among NL 3B’s this year, behind Bill Hall and Chipper Jones respectively. Zimmerman’s stats are comparable given the number of innings played but he already gets so little respect in the national press that I doubt he’ll get the support to win the GG. On stats alone, you could make a pretty good case for Kouzmanoff too but again, GG voting is based more on hitting, popularity, and name recognition than real fielding, as evidenced by Captain Jumpthrow’s multiple Gold Gloves. D.Wright is definitely in the top 3 fielding 3B’s in the league and that plus some hitting will net you Gold Gloves.

  13. Steve Camas says:

Hey it’s a golden glove award NOT a golden arm award!

Joking aside, David seems to make a lot of impressive plays — one’s where he demonstrates range and quickness but it seems to me that throwing errors need to be considered also when awarding a golden glove.

    • 4JoeOrsulak says:

Again, people don’t give him credit for the immense strides he made with his arm in the second half of the year. Almost all of his throwing errors were made in the first 2 months of the year. In the second half, he was almost always on the money.

      No respect I tell ya!

      • hjhjhjhjhj says:

perception vs reality….that is a big theme here…especially with our better players

      • Moises says:

It also doesn’t hurt to have Delgado receiving the ball. He may not be great defensively, but he’s really good at scooping up those bad throws from Wright. He’s saved Wright a few throwing errors.

    • loqiel says:

Everyone remembers the spectacular. No one remembers that ball you boot down 8-3 in mid-May. Gold Glove awards are a joke.

  14. Furioso says:

Yeah, stranding Murphy on 3rd w/ zero out was one heckuva web gem!

  15. el_giacomo says:

I feel that Wright does indeed have a gold glove, he certainly makes some outstanding plays, it’s just that is arm is bronze at best…

  16. wladair says:

David Wright has several defensive plays down to a science, including the charging barehanded grab and throw as well as the diving stop and throw. His throws can be erratic when he throws sidearm, i guess to take some pressure off his shoulder, and also when he tries to throw on the fly and does not set his feet to make an accurate throw. He does have the web gem defensive mastery that constantly make highlight reels and that drive the opposing managers and players crazy. These are the reasons he will always be considered gold glove material.

  17. Cactus says:

Maybe Wright can play some real defense next year instead of web-gem defense, whatever that is. The guy is an average 3B defensively. Which is fine, but he’s not this awesome fielder because he’s a gold glover or a web-gem maker. The gold glove award is based on name recognition and offense, and whatever the web gem maker award is based on (flashy-ness i suppose) isn’t good defense, which should be measured by defensive range and rate of turning balls in play into outs.

  18. Furioso says:

Wright isn’t even well respected around the league by his peers.

    - That SI poll of overrated players had him on it
    - Chipper mocked him for winning the GG last season
    - The players didn’t vote for him enough for him to make the ASG
    - Lou Pinella didn’t fear pitching to him w/ runner on 3rd zero outs

If his peers can’t even respect him, why should we?

  19. mymetsrock says:

how come there are so-called “fans” on this blog that are unhappy about OUR player, mr. wright, being praised for his fine work this year?

i don’t understand. shouldn’t you all be glad that a met is being recognized?

and on top of that, i see lots of people on here rooting for other teams players, that’s just not right.

    • loqiel says:

Look, I respect Wright, he’s got a bright future and he’s above average in everything he does. Having said that, he hasn’t DONE anything yet, hasn’t accomplished anything really, truly significant. I’m not going to beat the “he’s not clutch” drum to death because he certainly does have a lot of time, and last year when the Mets collectively turned to mush he carried them as much as he could… but the Mets need to make the bigger stages for their stars to really shine and earn everyone’s respect, and that just isn’t happening right now, so naturally some of the questioning wonderment gets pointed at the stars as to why it’s not happening.

      • hjhjhjhjhj says:

by the way he is a whole lot better than “above average”…. i guess everyone can have their opinions and i agree that if what we look at playoff and championships as the top barometer of a players success than yes he has done little only making the playoffs once in 4 full seasons…now the non clutch thing…please i need to see him bat 245 a couple of more years to say that he cant do this in the “clutch’ (ya i said it and go look at what he has done)…finally now i know we all want the guy who going to hit 50hrs adn drive in 160 runs while batting 385…well Babe Ruth is dead adn bonds got caught…so instead of constently put this guy down with obsurd statements and dumb comments like “chipper mocked him” …SO WHAT…who the hell cares what chipper thinks….what i know is he just batted
        302 10th NL
        124 RBI 2nd NL
        115 runs 3 rd NL
        390 obp 7th NL
        524 slug 7th NL
        189 hits 2nd NL
        94BB 5th NL
        135 Rns Created 4th NL
        33 HRS 9th in NL

oh and he batted 340 with 6hrs, 6 2bs, 21RBI in september…SO GET OVER THIS LACK OF RESPECT YOU HAVE FOR ONE OF THE GREAT YOUNG PLAYERS OF THIS GENERATION

        • kingman 26 says:

Thank you, and as I and many others have pointed out, Wright’s career numbers with RISP and in EVERY “clutch” situation are excellent. He had a bit of a down year in 2008 in these areas (but not at all overall, as hj’s stats above clearly show), but all indications are that Wright will be back to hitting over .300 in every “clutch” stat next year, as he did every year of his career previously.

And while he may not be Brooks Robinson or Mike Schmidt (yet) he is FAR from an average fielder, and in the media age we live in, of course a player in NY, who makes more than his share of highlight reel plays in the field (and is not a criminal, woman-beater, drunk/druggie, thief, fan/media avoider, overly greedy Boras-type) is going to get more than his share of accolades and awards.

        • Furioso says:

Yet a guy like Longoria has already accomplished more than Wright has in clutch situations.

          Funny how that works.

          Winning makes you a winner.

          Choking makes you David Wright.
