    Lose the Vest!
Seriously, your comments are rather general.
The pennant was not lost in MAY-UNE…
It was lost when Omar the horrible made no moves to shore up the bullpen or add another starter.

I want to know where the locker room is…Matt did u build that in your basement with the Geico money??

    • Lidge=Mitch Williams says:

HAHAHA! The studio is actually the SNY Studios.

Lol. Nice name. Us Mets fans can only hope.

That is the single biggest overlooked part of the phillies this year. They pull a guy off of Houston’s scrap heap. A guy who had been bad for two years and he comes in and doesn’t blow a save all year? C’mon. Anyone who says they knew he would be anywhere near this good is lying. They took a gamble and got lucky.

        • DAG says:

but you have to give them credit. omar could have traded for lidge. he didn’t, the phillies did, and now they’re in the world series.

        • jonas22 says:

Remember when Billy Wagner said we should get Lidge…that he was a good guy and he knew he would do well…or words to that affect??

yeah…….we should have listened to him….

  5. iamatwork says:

    # of teams that have “consistent” players who surround their superstards: 0.

  6. For those of you who missed it:
here’s a quote from matt stairs sure to bring a smile to any mets fan’s face:

After hitting his game-winning homer in Game 4 against the Dodgers, a reporter asked him about his teammates’ reception for him after he’d circled the bases: “Getting your [butt] hammered by guys, there’s no better feeling,” Stairs said.

  9. mikeyrad says:

It is so about bullpen consistency. Although Lidge deservedly has gotten a lot of credit, I think the work of Durbin, Madson, Romero, et. al. played an as important if not more important role in the Phillies success. In other words, the 7th and 8th innings are just as important as the 9th.

    • stillbelieve says:

      agree 100%.
saves are basically a team stat so lidge not blowing a save all year also has alot to do with the pitchers getting the job done in the 7th and 8th

  10. Visch says:

    Every team has streaks.

This team’s problem was the bullpen, not some made up notion of “grinding it out” and “going to work every day”. Maybe you’d like to see david eckstein at short since he’s going to bring his lunch pail to short every day instead of Jose Reyes.

Or perhaps you’d like to see cliff floyd bring his heart back back to the mets along with his .200 average.

Or maybe you’d like to see jason varitek catch next year since hes got such a big heart! Lets just ignore that he was an automatic out this year.

Do you honestly think that David Wright and Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran weren’t trying hard every day?

The only player you could make that argument for was Delgado, and seriously, would some random “consistent” player have helped him out mid season? No, he’s an old veteran who was dogging it because of willy.

Nice insight. I always love to hear the misinformed opinion of someone who has never professionally covered the sport or every analyzed anything based on statistics.
