Buzz: HoJo, Warthen to Stay

by Regis Courtemanche on October 22nd, 2008 at 4:39 pm

Marty Noble reports for MLB.com that the Mets will likely keep Howard Johnson and Dan Warthen on the coaching staff in 2009.

Noble writes:

“The club has all but decided to retain the respective pitching and hitting coaches, and it is inclined to bring back another incumbent, Sandy Alomar Sr., who served as Manuel’s bench coach.”

…it’s so hard for me as an observer to gauge how proficient these coaches are…the only one i can come close to evaluating is luis aguayo who seemed trigger-happy at third base…that being said, i place the responsibility of the bullpen woes squarely on the pitchers themselves and don’t blame warthen too much for their breakdown last season…

Buzz: Peavy and the Braves, Ugh

by Matthew Cerrone on October 22nd, 2008 at 1:57 pm

In a report for the New York Post, after having talked with ‘several executives,’ Joel Sherman is convinced that Jake Peavy will eventually be traded to the Braves for pitcher Tommy Hanson and outfielder Jordan Schafer and either shortstop Yunel Escobar or second baseman Kelly Johnson.

Meanwhile, in a post to ESPN.com, citing ‘many rival executives,’ , Buster Olney points to the Braves as well, adding, “Some executives involved in the talks say it makes a lot of sense for the Padres to strike a deal before the free agent market begins.”

This winter, SNY will be airing an hour-long documentary about the 1969 Mets, and the ‘Year of the Impossible,’ as they call it.

SNY and the film’s producers are looking for home movies of the season, post season and ticker-tape parade to ‘create the feeling of the fan’s perspective.’

Buzz: Interest in Jake Peavy

by Matthew Cerrone on October 22nd, 2008 at 9:41 am

On Monday, in the New York Post, Joel Sherman wrote, as of last week, ‘The Mets had shown almost no inclination to pursue Jake Peavy.’

However, in a recent report for FoxSports, Ken Rosenthal writes that the Mets have ‘definite interest,’ noting that a deal for Peavy would have to cost either Jon Niese or Robert Parnell and Daniel Murphy.

In 2008, Peavy was 10–11 with a 2.85 ERA in 27 starts, while striking out 140 batters in 223 innings.

He won the Cy Young in 2007, while going 19–6 with a 2.54 ERA.

Earlier this week, Peavy’s agent, Barry Axelrod, told the San Diego Tribune that the pitcher would prefer to stay in the National League, while mentioning the Braves, Cubs, Astros, Dodgers and Cardinals as intriguing destinations.

Peavy, 27, will earn $59 million over the next four seasons, plus either a $22 million option or $4 million buyout for 2013, and he has a full no-trade clause.

According to Buster Olney at ESPN.com, Peavy could also ask that his new team guarantee the $22 million option for 2013.

Note: Mike Francesa’s Co-Host on WFAN

by Matthew Cerrone on October 22nd, 2008 at 9:03 am

In Newsday, Neil Best is asking readers to vote for whom they feel should be Mike Francesa’s permanent co-host on WFAN.

To vote, click here.

Personally, I would like to see either Mets beat reporter Ed Coleman or mid-day host Evan Roberts get the job.

Coleman is the station’s Mets beat reporter, while Roberts is a young, thoughtful Mets fan – both co-hosts would bring balance to Francesa’s anti-Mets slant and his constant praise of the Yankees.

Otherwise, the city’s most popular sports talk-radio show will continue to spin negative rhetoric about the Mets without any hint of reality, which is what has occurred for the last 20 years.

Unfortunately, so far, of the 2,100 voters, only 9 percent feel Coleman should be Francesa’s co-host, while only 12 percent feel it should Roberts, which is disappointing.

Joe Benigno, who is a Mets fan, but who also borders on irrational and mostly pessimistic, is second in the voting with 20 percent.
