Blog: Scout on Marlins who may be Traded
By Matthew Cerrone - Oct 23, 2008 1:46 pm

In a post to his blog for the Sun Sentinel, Mike Berardino talks with a scout about seven players who could be traded by the Marlins, including 1B Mike Jacobs, 2B Dan Uggla, RHP Kevin Gregg and LHP Scott Olsen.

…i have been sent several e-mails from fans suggesting the Mets acquire gregg from the Marlins to be their closer

According to the scout, “Gregg has those knee problems… He’s not a closer.  Not for me.  Maybe you stick him back in the seventh inning like he used to be for the Angels, but the arbitration number ($4 million or more) is too high for that role.”

In 72 appearances for the Marlins this season, Gregg was 7–8 with 29 saves and a 3.41 ERA.

yea idk bout greg being a closer….but its an option and should be one of the last options

  2. Simpsonsfan421 says:

Gregg is a heart attack waiting to happen. He’s better than the closer by committee crap we were throwing out in the second half, but not by much. I’ll bet any money: if the Mets make this trade, then Lindstrom will end up becoming a lights-out closer for the Marlins.

  3. nydre78 says:

Did any of the fans that emailed Matt not pay attention to all the saves Gregg blew this year?

  4. bkfitz says:

Does no one remember the game Gregg blew? I’m sure Carlos Beltran does.

    • metsftw says:

a closer blew a save?! what?! you mean brad lidge was the only closer who didn’t blow a save this year?! my mind just exploded.

      • ArmandoReynoso says:

Well, the guy had 15 decisions (7-8), with 9 blown saves. I don’t have time to look up every game he pitched, but that’s a lot of decisions for a “closer”.

He also walked 4.9 batters per 9 IP…

        • metsftw says:

correct. his problems was walks, though his walk rate wasn’t much worse than k-rod’s. he only gave up 3 bombs all year. (k-rod gave up 4). and no, i’m not implying that gregg > k-rod, or that gregg is the solution in the pen. in fact, gregg was pretty luck all year (262 babip with a 19% LD rate is pretty effin’ lucky). he’s likely to be worse next year.

  5. HitTheSinkerBall says:

Kevin Gregg defiantly will not be the Mets closer next year.

  6. brucemagic2007 says:

I would take Olsen and then bench his a$$ for the things he said before the final weekend at Shea

    • HitTheSinkerBall says:

Why? He talked crap and then went out and backed it up. Mets did nothing about it.

      • therealsince86 says:

Yup, I would love to have Olson be the #5 on the Mets.
I would go get Willingham and Olson.

        • Tidewater says:

go get Willingham? Is he on a shelf somewhere waiting to be plucked?

          I hate posts like this.

Lets go get Webb and Halladay too. And Utley too.

        • Dirtysanchez says:

he obviously means trade tide…also he has mentioned a trade proposal before regarding olson and willingham..

        • therealsince86 says:

Yes Willingham is one of the arbitration guys that is said to be VERY available as they want to upgrade speed in the OF. They will NOT keep all of those arbitration players. My guess is that Willingham or Uggla will move.

        • Deadpanwalking says:

If we’re getting Utley we may as well take Howard too. He can really hit the long ball!

      • Simpsonsfan421 says:

Olsen is a mediocre pitcher whom the Mets normally own, yet he just happened to have a good game against them for once. He’s basically Oliver Perez without the strikeouts.

        • therealsince86 says:

Yeah he’s just like him except He
          Is 3 years younger
Is arbitration elligible and under team control for a long time.
Will make 12 million dollars less than Perez
Actually averages 6 innings per start. (Perez had 6 less innings and 1 more start.)
          Gave up 40 less walks
          Hit 8 less batters
          Had a lower ERA
          Had a lower WHIP
Actually pitched 8 innings at any point this season.

But other than that, they are just alike.

  7. mrose says:

Kevin Gregg can’t even SEE! He has to have signs given like hte catcher is a 3rd base coach…its amazing he had the small success as a closer he did.. HECK NO!

    • therealsince86 says:

If it was a part of an overall plan maybe.
Something like bringing him, Everyday Eddie and Juan Cruz in.

  8. rowjamie says:

forget Gregg, Uggla is the interesting name there.

    • therealsince86 says:

If we wanted a guy that could not play 2B to play 2B wouldn’t we put Murphy there and save the prospects?
Uggla would take Fmart. Are we sure we want to trade him to the Marlins?

    • Uggla is a very very interesting name. Murph can bat 2 and Uggla can bat 6th. Behind Delgado and in front of Church.

      • therealsince86 says:

I am guessing then that Murphy would play LF?
        Uggla is terrible at 2B.
MAYBE if you could move Delgado to the Jays for Ryan then put Uggla at 1B? Then sign Hudson for 2B and Murphy in LF?
That would be a decent lineup that would not cost us much. We would still have a ton of money to spend on BP and SP.
Reyes, Murphy, Wright, Beltran, Uggla, Church, Hudson, Schnieder/Castro?

        • Two things.

First, I just don’t think this team can get rid of Delgado and lose the possibility of that production without going out and getting Manny. I just don’t see that happening. Let’s face it, Delgado got timely hits for this team. Without him, we were probably out of it with two weeks to go.

Second (lastly), I am guilty of this too. The good ol’ Schneider/Castro in the 8 hole. That usually works out about 25% of the time, as Ramon can’t stay off the DL. I love Ramon, but I wonder what the middle relief market is like in exchange for a guy that some people believe can start behind the dish.

        • Dirtysanchez says:

uggla has 0 games at 1b…..

        • Dirtysanchez says:

I think they will be exploring catcher as well 09. Castro is great when healthy but like you said he is always on the DL

        • therealsince86 says:

Dirty? On here what does that matter? Murphy has 1 and he can play it.

        • therealsince86 says:

You could replace Delgado’s POTENTIAL production with Hudson AND Uggla. That being said I don’t want any part of Uggla at 2B for the Mets. If he COULD play LF or 1B then maybe. However, imagine how bad a left side we would have with Murphy and Uggla over there. LOL.

        • Yea it doesn’t make a difference. It’s like putting Adrian Peterson in as your Tight End in Madden ‘09. Sure, he gets run over when he blocks, but when he runs a route – show me a linebacker that can stay with him :-)

        • Dirtysanchez says:

          Lmao good point real
Yea uggla at 2b is not an option….defenisve wise. I like his bat though.

        • thereal…..right side :-) (if murphy plays 1b)

        • metsfrenzy says:

Does anyone really believe Delgado can have another year like this year- yes he was productive but it’s time to meove him – remember in early June everyone wanted to bench him. I’m glad he finished up strong but I don’t think it is a good idea to plan on him going forward.

As for Uggla, I like his bat but his glovework is awful. Still like Hudson at second. As someone mentioned, Uggla has nevr played first – why do we need to put a square peg/round hole for the bat. There are options out there.

Hudson for 2B-explore Holiday in LF it may cost Murphy,Niese etc and you would have to sign him but it would fill a huge hole and need for the Mets with a proven performer

        • therealsince86 says:

I don’t really like Hudson for 2B. I just threw that in there having fun with it.
Hudson will cost WAY too much money and honestly 2B is not as big of an issue as what we think. Let Murphy have a shot there or bring in Grudz as he will most likely be available. That is if we can dump Castillo.
That money for Hudson can be spent on much bigger issues in SP, BP and acutal hitters.

        • BiggieSmalls says:

Jacobs could easily replace Delgado’s numbers at First Base.

We can flip Delgado to an AL team then get Jacobs to fill 1B.

        • Dirtysanchez says:

          by trading who?

      • ArmandoReynoso says:

Uggla also had a horrible 2nd half (.226, only 9 HRs — compared with .286, 23 HRs in the 1st half). And as others mentioned above, he’s atrocious in the field (though he always seems to make gold glove plays vs. the mets).

  9. Fiya Minaya says:

Are there any over 40 washed up guys that we can “catch lightening in a bottle” on?

  10. metsflip says:

Kinda random but, did anyone see Citi Field’s new Home Run Apple holder? It looks very cool

    • I didn’t see it. If we end up trading Delgado, it will pop up about 20 fewer times though :-(

      • therealsince86 says:

Pending on what the plan is 09. If they went out and got a LF to replace him or another 1B then….
Besides which Delgado will we get? Are you sure we will get 2008 2nd half?

        • Dirtysanchez says:

IF….delgado is here in 09 i think we will get the 2nd half of 2008 version of delgado. I believe he has corrected his timing and is healthy…but again that is a big IF

        • therealsince86 says:

I just don’t know how to be sure with him anymore. I hope you are right but I would not be upset at all to see him go while his value is high rather than to gamble and see the same cut him now post in May.

        • I think Delgado is way too proud and smart a player to be counted out.

Let’s not forget he had wrist surgery after 2006. He then broke his hand on the last day of 2007. There are way too many indications that he just got healthy rather than it being a hot streak. That was one really long hot streak.

I really thought he got that one to oppo field for a 2 run homer to tie it on that final sunday. That would have been something.

        • BiggieSmalls says:

Delgado laid down for Wille .. Is there even any doubt about that?

Mike Jacobs can replace Degado’s numbers at First Base and he is what.. 27/28?

        • Unless you change your name from BiggieSmalls to Delgado’sBrain, I can’t be sure you’re right.

Why would he lay down for Willie? Give me a good reason?

        • BiggieSmalls says:

Certain players – led by Delgado – had a problem with Willie. They thought he was a poor in game manager and poor communicator.

These players and Toby B. were the reason Willie had no support in the Club house or front office.

Willie lost the team. And the team was led by Delgado.

  11. Seaver41 says:

    Surely, you jest. Kevin Gregg?
Does anyone remember that he actually lost his closer’s job to Matt Lindstrom?
Better yet, anyone remember a Friday night in late August when Gregg was protecting a 9th inning lead against a certain New York team, got two outs then loaded the bases and surrendered a grand slam to a guy named Carlos Beltran?

    • therealsince86 says:

I know man, I can’t stand closers who blow saves. LOL.
Either way I don’t want him to be the Mets closer.

    • Yes! But that motivated Gregg to beat us even more because the Mets stomped on home plate more than any other team does. They also pat on the back more often.

  12. FlightFromHouston says:

This is important, b/c Omar’s favorite thing to do is make trades with the Marlins and the Nationals.

    • Nate W. says:

hopefully those two teams have run out of guys Omar wants because I know they dont have anyone I would want to trade for. (as_suming a realistic trade)

      playing Omar…
him? didnt we have him two years ago?
who? nah we had him last year.
him? nope, too much potential for me.
who? oh yea, i had him with the expos. make the deal!

  13. Dafatone80 says:

Mike Jacobs NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER walks.

    EVER.

He drew 36 walks this season, and put up an on-base percentage of .299.

    That’s atrocious.

Until Jacobs shows that he can take a pitch, Delgado’s a much better hitter.

    • Nate W. says:

      ex point!

On a mets team without Delgado, Jabobs would be a backup to Nick Evans. He would be a decent PH option with his pop, but thats about it.

Let someone else give him a full time job and see if he develops at all over the next year or two…

      • BiggieSmalls says:

Jacobs hit 30+ homers last year in that Marlins Line up. I
Doubt he would be a backup to Evans.

Delgado walked 72 times – 19 of which were intentional.

I’ll take an improving, young controlled slugger over a declining slugger coming off a year he will not repeat.

Not saying Jacobs is the answer, but there ARE options at First Base if we can get a good trade value for Delgado and sell high.

        • metsftw says:

jacobs doesn’t show any signs of improving. hasn’t improved his walk rate since he’s been in the majors. in fact, it’s gone down in the last 2 years (9% in ‘06 to 7% now) while his K rate has gone up. not good signs. he was a bit unlucky in the babip department this season, but the complete lack of plate discipline is a huge red flag for me.

        • Nate W. says:

The homers are a result of his playing time. The Mets (or Marlins for that matter) would get less homers but better production out of others. I’d be fine with an Evans/Jacobs platoon where they each played about half the time. The problem is that the Marlins would expect to trade Jacobs as a starting 1B, which isnt what the Mets would be getting.

well put metsftw, and his increased exposure to lefties has been the main reason why he has showed regressing. Making him… a platoon player!

        • 31yonkers5 says:

He would be a better player in NY as he gets up for the atmosphere… i guarantee it

        • therealsince86 says:

Right. he would get amped up to strike out more. Stay away, he’s just not very good offensively or defensively.

  14. phukthephills says:

what would it cost to get olsen?? i think a guy like this could be good on the mets.. remember what he said about the mets, i hated that he said that but he went out and backed himself up….jroll said sumthin last year…backed it up…beltran said sumthin this year….didnt back it up…

  15. 31yonkers5 says:

    Bring back JACOBS! yeah right
