According to a team press release, Jerry Manuel today announced that Howard Johnson, Dan Warthen, Sandy Alomar, Sr., and Sandy Alomar, Jr. will return to his coaching staff in 2009.

Additionally, Randy Niemann, who was the Mets Minor League Rehabilitation Coordinator, will serve in his third stint as the team’s bullpen coach.

Lastly, Razor Shines, who managed the Phillies Single-A team, will become the team’s third base coach.

Guy Conti, Luis Aguayo and first base coach Ken Oberkfell will be reassigned within the organization.

    Razor Shines? Viva les Expos?

  2. PeterDragon says:

you could expect that Conti would be gone.
When was Nieman the bullpen coach last?

I hope Oberkfell stays in the organization; he didn’t mean much with this staff, but I think he did well as AAA manager.

    HAHA
    nice

  4. FlightFromHouston says:

razor shines… what a name, to say the least

  5. mdemaio says:

Holy speed of light…Razor Shines’ Wikipedia page is already updated to include this hiring…

  6. Hernandez_1B says:

Razor Ramon???? At least he’ll give the players the “Razors Edge” if they get out of line

  7. hsimms says:

Razor Shines is 3rd base coach according to official Mets site. Wondering if Obie leaves at this point.

  8. Gina says:

Ugh. I hope they don’t let Oberkfell get away.

    • Cactus says:

who cares, he’s an ex cardinal and an ex brave. let’s hire terry pendelton next.

      • rustyjr says:

we could always get ken brett he’s played for almost every team but the mets in the 70’s and 80’s

        • ridethesnake says:

We can only hire ex-Mets? Isn’t that keeping your pool somewhat thin? Tony LaRussa never played for the As or Cards, Bobby Cox never played for the Braves, Joe Torre never played for the Yanks, Spaky Anderson never played for the Tigers, etc etc.

Ken Oberkfell has managed for the Mets system over 10 years, and is a quality mind. Since sarcasm doesn’t play well here, saying you don’t care because he played for other teams makes you sound dumb.

        • CharlieH says:

Except that he’s dead at the present time.

  9. Seavertheman says:

Ah, Razor Shines. One of the all-time great names. Made his major league debut against the Mets in 1983.

  10. erik says:

The question is: Were these Omar’s decisions or Jerry’s? Did Omar want to clean out the rest of the staff and he picked Razor or did they let Jerry make the decisions?

  11. rustyjr says:

by the way i came in during the end of fatcessa’s interview with (hey moe ) heyman whats this about the mets looking to get rid of schnider?

    • stickguy says:

I’m all for it, depnding, of course, on what they get for him, and what they give up to replace him (and how good he is).

I know that the Pen is the overriding concern, but it does sometimes get glossed over (well, other than the Castillo hatred) that for good stretches of the season, the bottom of the order was a black hole, largely due to 2B and C being offensive offensively!

So, IMO, after stabalizing LF (preferably with a legit, solid RH bat), and getting 2B staightened out (just give Murphey the job and be done with it), if they can upgrade the C spot it wold take care of the position players nicely.

Don’t forget, Castro and Schneider are both FAs after 2009, and neither one is a spring chicken, so don’t expect them back.

I would love to see the LT replacement on hand for ‘09, even if it is to split time. Unless they roll the dice with the same duo (or trio at times!), and hope someone from the minors is ready by 2010.

Geez, how nice would it be if Murph could take 2B (and continue to hit), and they had a catcher that could also hit. And actualy lineup without holes!

      • rustyjr says:

i did’t hear what did heyman say?

      • therealsince86 says:

Got in way late on this one. But if you look at OBP and total production there were not MANY catchers with better numbers than Mr. Nohit. It really is a non hitting spot.

  12. matthew66 says:

It was obviously Jerry because he worked with Razor Shines in the white sox organization.

best coaching names: both alomars and razor shines

  13. phukthephills says:

i hope this guy shines is better than aguayo was

  14. mdemaio says:

    Can’t be a gangsta without a Razor….

  15. phukthephills says:

what would we have to give up to get david price from the rays??
this guy is unbelievable and would be a future star on this new york mets team

    • mdemaio says:

Victor Zambrano, Bartolome Fortunato, and Citifield. ..

    • just-mlb says:

At this point, I’d think we have to throw in citifield, citibank and lehman brothers to get david price

      • iluvbuckner says:

box of nails for lehman brothers and a bailout to be named later.

        • rustyjr says:

        • ridethesnake says:

“what would we have to give up to get david price from the rays??”

About 10 years of coming in last place and practicing the first overall pick.

    • AidanO says:

ur an idiot…why would the rays trade david price…hes the best prospect in baseball and hes a lefty if the mets called and asked what they would have to give up for price the rays would laugh and hang up the phone

    • Two-By-Four says:

      Your first born son. :)

    • LETSGO says:

whoever asked about getting david price from the rays — what the he** is wrong with you? I mean people who ask questions like that should not be allowed on this board — there s/b an age or IQ limit on this site — fool,…

  16. miker94 says:

well with hojo still there i guess it’ll be another losing season for the 09 mets. don’t they learn anything??? allstar type players can’t hit in the clutch and have zero consistency…hmmmm, i wonder who’s fault that was????

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

That’s because every at bat in the late innings became ‘clutch’ instead of tack on runs b/c the God awful bp of ours just gave up the lead. And most of those tack on runs probably wouldn’t even be necessary if the bp could actually hold a lead…..

It was the bp, not overall lack of clutch hitting, that has us watching two other teams in the WS right now. You can’t blame HoJo for that.

    • CharlieH says:

89 wins is a losing season?

guys how about this for a drinking game everytime tim mac kisses the phillies coolies you gotta down a shot of wild turkey?

  23. rustyjr says:

    all right cliffy !!!

  24. metsfan1 says:

Addition by subtraction. As long as we don’t see Aguayo sending Endy Chavez every other game to see him get nailed at the plate is a positive.

  25. nyj0126 says:

Is it hard to believe that we’ve been in 30% of the last 10 NLCS? And a World Series this decade? I kind of this it is. I’d like to have even more than three out of the next ten.

    • nyj0126 says:

Manuel can get us there which is the point I was making. Warthen should stay too. Although it wasn’t done the right way, the coaching change was one of our bright spots this season. People take it for granted the Mets competitiveness. How many teams out there can tell you they know there’s like a ninety percent chance there team cracks .500? We’ll do it. We’ll be be back there next year. And build from there just like the ‘98 collapse.

  26. nyj0126 says:

The main changes that’ll need to come are in the bullpen and the leadership. As far as I’m concerned, the rest is fine. The bullpen turned a 100+ win team into a collapse. We need back Ollie at a reasonable rate. If not, a reasonable replacement. And we need to get Castillo out of here. I’d be rooting for Rowand, but I’ll settle for something else. Murphy at 2B is the wild card, but I think it can happen too.

  27. Andrew says:

    Unrelated:

I just saw a sign right at the end of the Rays winning tonight that said “Amazin’ Rays We Believe”

WHAT THE HECK. Why everyone gotta steal our stuff?

    • gomets6091 says:

I was just coming on here to say the exact same thing! So ridiculous.

I know that the Rays are very similar in a lot of ways to the ‘69 Mets, but for crying out loud come up with your own slogan!

  28. MetsFan4Decades says:

1 for 28 with RISP? Guess that ‘non clutch’ problem affects more than just the Mets - hahahaha

    Go Rays!

    • nyj0126 says:

It was like deja vu to that last Wednesday game when Delgado had a grand slam and the Mets had runner on 3rd with no out in 4 straight innings. They only scored once. They even had other runners on in those innings too. The worst was Murphy’s lead off triple that was never cashed in on in the bottom of the 9th in a tied game. Not counting the Mets 29 blown saves, that’s the season right there lol

    • morechocolateplease says:

haha yep…..and go take a look at jimmy rollins post season stats.

jimmy rollins is a typical “gritty” player………….aka he is completely average and is small and fast. THAT’S IT. he had NO case to win the ‘07 MVP over holliday.

as far as the Mets are concerned, yes the pen turned tack on at bats into clutch at bats….however, the BA with RISP 2 out and bases loaded were really bad…..beltran in particular, but wright church, schneider, and even delgado (for 4 months) didn’t hit in the clutch.

  29. nyj0126 says:

The Cubs may look to move Hill or Samardzija into the 5 spot in their rotation. So the Cubs may look to trade Jason Marquis who’s due a little less than 10 million next season. Marquis has made 160 starts in the last 5 seasons. He has at least 190 innings in 4 of them. At least 200 in two of them. The only poor season there was 2006 even though St. Louis still won the World Series.

He’s on a contract year so I don’t think the cost would be high. Maybe a swap of Scott Schoenweis and Aaron Heilman for him. It’ll shed some salary on our part too. I think it’s something worth considering because it’s not easy finding quality starting pitching out there. Not 30 year olds on one year deals.

  30. The Slider says:

Jon Heyman was interviewed on Francesca’s show today and had some Mets-related news.

First, while commenting on Willie’s future job opportunities, he said that he had no problem with Willie’s strategic baseball decisions.

Second, he said that Lowe and Fuentes are high up on the Mets FA list.

Third, he said that there are some in the Mets organization who were disappointed with Brian Schneider as catcher and that we may be looking at getting a more experienced, take charge, catcher (Jason Veritek? Pudge? Benji Molina?) to guide the younger pitchers in the organization.

    • The Slider says:

p.s. you can listen to the interview by going to the FAN web page.

    • morechocolateplease says:

IMO, castro called much better games than schneider. and i don’t think johan was particularly happy with Schneider.

    • gomets6091 says:

      Varitek - ugh
      Molina - UGH
Pudge - I just threw up a little in my mouth.

      • nyj0126 says:

        Varitek = Leadership

If we sign a catcher, Laird is probably the best option. I don’t think we’ll get a new catcher though. Maybe via trade with Baltimore for Ramon Martinez, but I don’t see much happening there.

        • morechocolateplease says:

we don’t need veteran leadership at the cost of having a .210 hitter who is old and very very expensive.

guys like varitek and aaron rowand are typical “gritty” players which basically means nothing.

clutch and grit are two very different things.

        • gomets6091 says:

I’d take Varitek in a heartbeat…as a bench coach. Fact is, he’s just not a baseball player anymore, or shouldn’t be anyway.

        • therealsince86 says:

And check out Ramon Hernadez’s numbers. They are as bad or worse than Schnieder’s.

  31. gomets6091 says:

Question - if David Wright made two 9th-inning errors like the ones Longoria made tonight and in Game 5 of the ALCS (the Red Sox big comeback), how hard would a lot of Mets fans come down on him?

    • nyj0126 says:

Really hard, but we also would have cheered him a lot harder too when he’d come through with a big hit - if he could that is.

Most Rays fans you see at the games weren’t even Rays fans before the season. They’re a bunch of bandwagoners. It’s a shame because the few real fans out there get overshadowed. But they wouldn’t have boo’ed Longoria like we would Wright because we’re not laid back. We’re stressed fans. We want to win. We expect to win. Tampa Bay simply won because of how talented they are. They didn’t need fans there and for most of the season, they didn’t.

    • morechocolateplease says:

      furioso would have been…..furious?

and what about yesterday when upton GIDP twice? he would have been declared “dumb and undisciplined” like jose reyes is labeled.

the real problem is when veterans like Schoenweiss, Wagner, Pedro, Ayala, Schneider, Anderson, Sanchez, Alou, Delgado (till july), and even Beltran (during his prolonged cold spells), come up small.

  32. nyj0126 says:

How could you hold the bench coach of anyone? lol I barely even know who he is, but come on? Didn’t the bullpen become dismal when he was here? It wasn’t good with Conti, but at least he has some success here. In 2006 was it? They don’t need him back.

  33. metz1 says:

whats the chance cleveland would trade victor martinez? i hear they have a catching prospect named santana that hit 21 hrs in AA that is ready.

    • nyj0126 says:

I’d consider it, but his lack of power isn’t appealing. Only if the price were low. It might not be that easy dumping off one of our catcher’s salaries either.

  34. metz1 says:

i think trading for jj putz and raul ibanez and signing krod would be a big start.

    • morechocolateplease says:

raul ibanez is a free agent, and is going to be 37. if you are gonna sign a 37 year old left fielder, his name should be Manny Ramirez.

two closers? not going to happen. it’s either putz or krod, but not both.

      • The Slider says:

… and he’s a left handed hitter. We need some balance in our line-up if we’re going to keep both Delgado and Chuch, and play Murphy.

    • nyj0126 says:

I’mall on board with signing K-Rod, but I don’t believe trading for Putz is what we need to do. We need to build a bullpen through utilizing the FA market. I know no one wants to do it, but it’s better and less risky than giving up all our prospects. Beimel and Dennys Reyes are coming off 3 straight good seasons. Less expensive options in Rhodes, Affeldt and Ohman are out there. And Weathers and Springer may be old, but they’re as good as any other set-up men. And Weather’s closing experience would be a great bonus to us.

Ibanez is old. Manny’s too expensive. Murphy and Evans will likely be platonning out in LF. Throw Pagan in that mix too if he does well. And Endy’s on the bench. And Anderson’s even under contract too. I like Ibanez as I do Abreu too, but they’ll cost too much. Just go after Hudson who gets paid similarly. He’ll provide a bigger spark. I think you go addition by subtraction in moving Castillo for Rowand. SF will do it in a heartbeat.

      • morechocolateplease says:

nyj, i dont wanna harp on you but:

aaron rowand is not that good, and he is certainly not available for castillo. and i would not give up anyone for him, b/c he is not that good.

signing free agent relievers to multiyear contracts is a DISASTEROUSLY BAD IDEA. Lets look at the NLCS and ALCS team’s pens.

        Rays:
JP Howell: traded for after 1 season in KC…..
        Grant Balfour: traded for
        Dan Wheeler: traded for
        David Price: drafted by rays
        Chad Bradford: traded for

        Red Sox:
        Papelbon: drafted by Sox
        Justin Masterson: drafted by Sox
Okajima: amateur FA (like reyes, fmart, etc)
        Manny Delcarmen: drafted by Sox

        Phillies:
        Lidge: traded for
        Romero: scrap heap
        Madson: drafted by Phils
        Chad Durbin: traded for

        Dodgers:
        Broxton: drafted by Dodgers
        Corey Wade: drafter by Dodgers
        Hong Chi Kuo: amateur FA
        Joe Beimel: Free Agent

ONE free agent. ONE!!!! You don’t build a pen by signed a bunch of free agents.

  35. Cactus says:

price makes no money for the next 3 years. at that point - in a best case scenario - he might be floated out there hoping a team would ridiculously overpay for him.

  36. MetsFan4Decades says:

PtheP: you can’t take a kid seriously who thinks he’s texting to someone’s cell instead of posting on a blog. I had to read that post 3 times to even figure out what the kid was trying to say. One big run on sentence - lol.

  37. Gland says:

Hey, PtP, before you go insulting people and saying they don’t know anything about baseball, why don’t you do a little research.

David Price was drafted in 2007 and signed a deal for 6 years paying him a TOTAL of 8.5 million (plus more he can earn in bonus).

The Rays can afford that! Haven’t you noticed that when teams trade someone to save money they do it when their contracts become unaffordable or they are due for big raises through arbitration. But I’m sure you know all about that because you’re the one who knows so much about baseball.

Here are the details, thanks to Cot’s Baseball Contracts

    David Price lhp
    6 years/$8.5M (2007-12)

    signed 8/15/07 (Major League contract)
$5.6M signing bonus (paid in 6 installments each Aug. 31, 2007-12)
    07:$0.5M, 08:$0.65M, 09:$0.75M, 10:$1M, 11:$1.25M, 12:$1.5M
    salaries in minors: 08:$0.1M, 09:$0.15M, 10:$0.2M, 11:$0.65M, 12:$1.2M
major league salaries may increase total package value to $11.25M
Price may void salary & file for arbitration in any year he is arbitration-eligible
    drafted 2007 (1-1) (Vanderbilt)

    agent: Bo McKinnis

    ML service: 0.000

  38. rustyjr says:

dave price isn’t he the milhouse looking dude that was on good day n.y - ohhh… wait - my bad

  39. phukthephills says:

GLAND, first off, the person insulted me by calling me an idiot for no apparent reason…so i decided to insult him back…also, what u said about price is absolutly right but if u were paying attention i am talking about his next contract which will be a $hit load of money. The rays cant afford THAT…i know they can afford what they are paying him now because it is a basic rookie contract…when that contract is over, and he becomes a free agent, he will be a free agent where teams will bid for him and the rays will not win….they can trade him before that contract to get value for him……so dont tell me what to do…im not some kind of g@y freak who researches every single thing about a player…all i was doing was throwing a name out there and seeing what people thought…its just too bad there are some ppl on this site that insult me when they disagree.

  40. phukthephills says:

i mentioned that before…i just dont see them going out and signing alll of them so if the mets happend to make an offer the rays would consider it and not just “laugh and hang up the phone” which is the point i was trying to make from one of the earlier posts aidon who called me an idiot for bringing up an idea…but yes ur right, they can defenitely just pay the money but if a team gives them some players they might want they will trade him

  41. Gland says:

“im not some kind of g@y freak who researches every single thing about a player”

Well now that you’ve insulted me am I supposed to insult you back?

When someone discusses a player’s contract, looking up their actual contract isn’t exactly researching “every single thing about a player”. It’s sort of relevant to the discussion, no?

And, genius, if you actually read the info, you would know that was not the “standard rookie contract” Price signed.

The point is that teams with lower budgets KEEP their players during the time their contracts are low (like in his case the next six years) and then trade him when the contracts go up.

So, looking at his contract, you can see why yes, the Rays pretty much would “laugh and hang up the phone”.

Unless you have an idea of who the Mets could send to make the deal? Or would that be too much research or thinking for you to actually do before you make a post?

  42. BBmetsfreak36 says:

Keep ur panties on. You were wrong and made a ridiculous post. End of story. If anything they trade him once he’s reached his potential right before the contract ends. Now do me a favor and don’t run home and say “Mommy…the big smart fans on the blog picked on me..::sniffle sniffle::”
Man-up, theres no crying in baseball.

  43. AidanO says:

i love it when ppl that dont know anything about baseball go and tell other ppl they dont know anything…he has 6 years on his contract why would they trade him now…or ever for that matter….the rays are in a world series right now and hes a big part of it and will be for the next 5 years…even if the mets offered wright and reyes they probably would still say no…so next time while you are crying bc somebody insulted you think about what your going to post

  44. phukthephills says:

geez guys…im not talking bout trading for him today…im talking within the next year or 2…BTW…this contract is very close to a rookie contract….i dont know if ny 1 understands what im trying to make but. eventually he will get a contract like 5/75….which the rays might not want to do…does noone understand what i am saying??????

  45. ridethesnake says:

He called you an idiot for good reason. You said the Rays would trade their top prospect because they can’t pay him, even tho New York Wall Streeter Stuart Sternberg has owned the club for over three years and has been planning to put them into he 100mil range in a few years, with a new stadium in 2012, after first building with youth. This team will be downright scary when they start using the money this guy has to compete monetarily with the Red Sox and (sort of) the Yanks.

That one of the richest owners in baseball looking to increase payroll by twofold would trade their cheapest player who is looking like a stud is idiotic, sorry.

  46. therealsince86 says:

Yeah in 6 years goof ball. So you are planning a trade that will happen 6 years from now?
