Buzz: Dodgers offer two-year Deal to Manny
By Matthew Cerrone - Oct 24, 2008 2:36 pm

According to the New York Post, “The Dodgers have offered Manny Ramirez a two-year deal worth $60 million to remain in Los Angeles.”

However, the Post reporters believe Ramirez will certainly reject the offer, as he is looking for a long-term deal of at least four years.

Yesterday, at SI.com, Jon Heyman listed the Mets and Phillies among six teams who could as ‘potential suitors’ for Ramirez, who is seeking a six-year contract.

This morning in Newsday, Ken Davidoff wrote, “The Mets have no intention of pursuing Ramirez at this point.”

i have yet to settle on whether i think manny is a good idea for the Mets, but i do know i have no interest in bringing him in for six years and $20 million per season…i’d rather Mark Teixeira at that point, no doubt

#1 Tex will cost more than that
#2 He doesnt have much desire to come to NY, per every story ever written about him, he wants to stay in LA or go to BAL, and if he does come to NY it will be to the Yankees who will undoubtedly offer more for his services…and NO, he will not take a dicount to play for the Mets

Manny isnt worth it, but u cant go around saying youd rather sign Texiera to that $$ instead…thast like someone saying “3 years, 10MM is too much for Paul Byrd, i’d rather sign CC Sabathia to that contract”

    • MetLifer says:

Tex will cost more than that in terms of what? Total contract? of course. Annual salary? No way!

      • METSCITI says:

Another reason they wont get Tex: if they signed him to a $20 mil per year deal it would cost that $20 mil + the 4 mil buyout for delgado for this year, meaning $24 mil put towards 1st base. It makes much more sense to pick up delgado’s 12 mil option and spend that 12 mil extra somewhere else.

        • Gina says:

But we’re going to have to spend money to find a replacement for Delgado after 09 anyway. Plus there’s no guarantee Delgado has a year anywhere near his second half. Plus Tex is a huge upgrade defensively.

I personally am not a fan of the idea of giving Tex that insane contract but I don’t think it would be a bad decision if they don’t have some sort of long-term plan for first base after Delgado. Or if they can’t add another power bat to the line-up as insurance in case Delgado starts to decline.

        • METSCITI says:

I’m actually not even one of the people who has fallen back in love with Delgado, but I just feel like the team has other holes (LF, SP, entire bullpen) to fire our financial bullets at a position where we have someone at a reasonable contract even for .265 25 hr 100 rbi delgado
That said- I would be the first to buy a Tiexiera jersey if they decided that was going to be their big guy!! haha

        • Gina says:

But then how do you fill the hole at 1b, and the power hole in 2010? As far as I know Delgado and Adam Laroche will be the only 1b free agents in 2010.

        • Tidewater says:

Ike Davis for 1B in ‘09!!!! GOOOOOOOOO IKE!!!!!

        • HOFMets57 says:

          That’s a looooooooooooong shot, Tide.

    • Slob says:

Did you compare Manny Ramirez to Paul Byrd?

  2. mistermet57 says:

I wouldn’t dare pursure Manny for that much money and with his game. Manny 2 years, 30per, NEVER. Better off over-paying Tex.

  3. theNYmetz says:

I would without a doubt love Manny’s bat, but I cannot help but think that, especially with the NY media, he will prove to be too much of a distraction, and too big a risk for such a long term contract.

We’ve seen the team fail to get past such a distraction this past year, when Willie’s job status was questions day after day. I think Evans/Murphy will be a fine platoon in left field, and I think that they will have more drive than Manny to get this team to the top.

    • Willie Randolph says:

I sign Manny for 5 yrs ,of course why not ?
2 years as a player and the rest as a hitting coach, he will be a hell of a hitting coach. LOL

  4. He won’t go to the Yankees, because then he would have to cut his power source and conform to the Yankees’ appearance rules.

  5. 4JoeOrsulak says:

This is why it’s a bad idea to count on building a team through free agency.

Does anybody have any idea as to whether it would be possible to center a trade around Clay Bucholtz and Carlos Beltran?

    • MetLifer says:

Why would we do that? The Mets are NOT trading their core players.. At this point, that’s Wright, Reyes, Beltran, and Santana

      • jamie says:

pet peeve: You can center something on something else, and you can revolve something around something else, but you cannot center something around anything.

sorry, I guess all those posts about the economy got me grumpy.

        • 4JoeOrsulak says:

You’re right. I also get worked up when people say “very unique”. Uniqueness is not quantifiable.

      • 4JoeOrsulak says:

We would do it to get someone likely to be just as valuable as Beltran virtually for free for 5 years.

    • Charlie Andre says:

      XCLAU BUCHOZ IS SO BAD!

      • 4JoeOrsulak says:

My friend, I would trade Beltran for Bucholtz straight up right now if I could.

        • ravi3 says:

and thankfully you do not run the New York Mets

        • 4JoeOrsulak says:

I might ask for an extra prospect. But I’m not sure if you’re aware of or appreciate how good Bucholz’s stuff is. His only real problem is Kris Benson Syndrome insofar as his choice of women is concerned.

    • Willie Randolph says:

      WHAT ?????????????????

  6. CitizenSnips says:

One year of Manny at that rate is essentially an entire Florida Marlins team.

  7. METSCITI says:

In Arod’s last contract he automatically would be bumped up to that amount + 1 mil. I’m not sure if he still has that in the new deal, but it would be hilarious to see Manny cost the Yankees another 4 mil without even signing for them

    • METSCITI says:

he had a clause that automatically makes him the highest player in baseball for the entire length of the deal

  8. Fregosi says:

With Burrell all but gone from Philly and $15 million freed up from that contract, Manny could wind up there.

    • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

I doubt it. He’s going to be out of their league in terms of years and dollars (even if Burrell comes off the books).

    • Willie Randolph says:

I would love to see Manny in Philly because in 1 1/2 yrs he’ll break the whole team the same thing will happen to us if we sign him.

  9. Gina says:

Maybe I’m missing something but I don’t understand why Manny would turn that down. I can’t imagine anyone’s going to offer him more than 60 total million over a 4 or 5 year contract.

And yeah I’d much rather give into Tex’s crazy contract demands than give a 6 year deal to Manny.

    • jamie says:

I agree. I like that offer by the dodgers, think it’s smart.

      • MetLifer says:

That’s not a real offer.. It’s more an offer to appease the fans. They know he’s not going to take it.

This will probably be Manny’s last big contract. He is going for max total value of contract regardless of the number of years.

        • jamie says:

I agree, that’s why I think it’s a smart offer from them. It’s reasonable on their part, and looks good (”hey, we offered him 30 freakin mil a year, whaddya want from us?”), and doesn’t tie them up if he takes it.

    • MetLifer says:

If it’s 15/year.. Mets would go after him for sure. He’s most likely going to get at least 20 per.. or maybe even ARod money.

    • Tidewater says:

He would turn it down because he might be able to get more guaranteed money for more years at less per year.

      • Gina says:

It’s all guaranteed in baseball isn’t it?

And if some team offers him significantly more money over more years that 60 million their front office has lost their mind. Hopefully it’s not ours.

        • Tidewater says:

No, there’s incentives and options and the like. I’m saying a 3 year deal at $21 per beats the guarantee of $60.

I don’t think it’s hard to imagine someone going 3 years 70 mil for him, and then it would have been wise to turn down 2/$60.

  10. Furioso says:

    Do it

Manny is the only one who can take Wright and Reyes from chokers to winners

    • CitizenSnips says:

By not hustling, making up injuries and being a general headache?

    • TBlz says:

Yes! I was wondering where you were! Friday complete!

    • Sylar says:

      You are such a moron….

Wright and Reyes aren’t “chokers”; the bullpen was god awful, and Manuelito won’t make it better….

      • Charlie Andre says:

WOW SYLAR, CALLUING OUT MANUEL LIKE THAT????

MAYBE MANUELITO IS LARRY FLINT’S GAME NAMER PERSON KINDS MIAYBE SORTS????

      • guierllNO MOta says:

Wright is absolutely a choker. See September 2008.

        • Charlie Andre says:

SEE SEPTEMBER 07 – BY BUTTTERS

        • Willie Randolph says:

Its not that he is a choker the thing is that he is a selfish player, thats why he always put good numbers but WE dont win.

        • Furioso says:

          Wright is soft.

He’ll compile great stats, when it really counts he strands the runner on 3rd w/ zero outs

      • phukthephills says:

dude the guy is completely wright…no need for namecalling…..wright and reyes need someone on their team to take pressure off of them…..manny would completely do that

        • Willie Randolph says:

          Take the pressure off ?
Ofcourse for being a real headache in the clubhouse,in the city etc, etc….

    • Dirtysanchez says:

based off what….did the dodgers win the ws already??

      • Furioso says:

Yeah, forget Manny has done great everywhere he’s been, he’s a world champion, and he took an LA team that was floundering around .500 and only carried them into the LCS by hitting over .400

Wright and Reyes will never EVER have anything close to that resume pal

  11. FlightFromHouston says:

what a joke. LA isn’t serious. As if Manny can’t get three years.

    • Sylar says:

He isn’t going to get $30 million for 3 years….

    • derxmasta says:

i think manny is better off taking 2 yrs for 60 (30mil per)
and then in 2010 take another 3-4yr contract for 60mil (15per)
      thats 5-6yrs for 120mil

if he was a smart man he’d take it

After the first 2 yr contract he’d still be somewhat desirable in this market to command another good deal.

      • Gina says:

I agree, although I’m not sure he’d get quite that much, but I think if he can get the same money in a shorter deal it makes more sense to take it.

  12. phukthephills says:

    all i can say is…
reyes, beltran, manny, delgado, wright, murphy

i dont really know if he is worth the money and headache but the lineup would be awesome…also, i think the pitching is the real problem and the big money should be spent on that…i can deal with a raul ibanez type player and a couple big pitchers

  13. Charlie Andre says:

TYPICAL OMAAAA, I CANT WAIT FOR TACO IN LEFT!!!!!!!!

ANY11 KNOW WHERE I CAN BUY A FEW BALLS FROM THE SEPTERMBER 5TH 1999 GAME???? MTY SON ASKED ME FOR THEM YESTERDAY@

  14. NickA33 says:

I used to be completely anit Manny. BUT…

If we’re going to sign Fuentes for a reasonable contract. Go after middle tier pitchers like Lowe, then why not follow up with Manny. We’ll have the money and we need a LF, desperatly.

I know, he’s 38, his defensive skills are lacking (to say the least) but the guy can flat out kill the ball. Sign him to a 3 year deal with a player/club option for a 4th year. I think that would be fine.

And if he doesn’t bite, we need to trade Guillen. Yes, Guillen is a head case but a change of scenary might be exactly what he needs.

    • Charlie Andre says:

and WHAT AVOUT IF MANYY AND GUILLEN OPLAY LEFT/LEFRTCEBT?????

    • Gina says:

Fuentes doesn’t want a reasonable contract. And I can’t imagine Lowe will either, he’s really not mid-tier in this pitching market he’s one of the better ones available. If he can get a big contract he’ll ask for it.

    • phukthephills says:

i agree…if we get some cheap pitchers, a cheap closer, then we should get manny…he is one of the most unbelievable hitters in the game. “He’d be a rockstar in NY”

    • beltran the warrior says:

      he’s not 38, he’ll be 37 next may 30.

    • chico says:

He’s had a change of scenery every year for the last 10 years or so. I like his numbers in some regards, but Guillen is a headcase.

  15. Hubie says:

I guess Boras has not been reading the papers. Manny, K-Rod, Tex and others will have a tough time getting a big contract right now. Owners are going to be reluctant to fork over the big bucks

Interesting to see where this market goes. Important for Omar to play his cards right. When all is said and done he may be able to get K-Rod or Manny for 3 years.

To the contrary, its possible the big players get the money and the middle tier players get shut out.

  16. iamatwork says:

    straight cash, homey.

    Typical Metsblog post:

“why sign Fuentes when we can get K-Rod for 3 yrs 15 Million total”

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH….some of you are killing the rest of us with your nonsense. I could sit here all day and write how CC Sabathia would be a better signing than Ollie Perez but CC Will cost 3 times as much!!!! how do you not get this? “I would trade Luis Castillo & Delgado for Pujols”…really?!?!!? no s h * t sherlock, what is the point in making these idiotic posts, I cant stand trying to talk to real fans who’s IQ is over 20 and have to sift through hundreds of stupid comments trying to get to the real fans to have a real discussion, the rest of you should start MetsFantasyBlog.com.

    • Tidewater says:

      THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Cactus says:

The Mets should have at least a 200 million dollar payroll next year. Between Citi and the city, the Mets are actually getting paid to build their stadium, which is charging beyond absurd prices for a baseball game.

  19. theNYmetz says:

I think for the Mets to prosper in 09, David Wright has to step up and take the leadership position that this team needs. Wright faltered in some big spots last year. Yes he produced, but I can’t say that he carried this team for any extended period of time. He needs to.

This is why I think signing Manny is a step backwards. I think it would be difficult for Wright, or anyone, to become the leader of this team with Manny in the clubhouse.

The Mets are not in desperate need of any position player. They have the talent, just not the chemistry. 2009 will have a lot of young players in need of leadership, not distractions. I really think if Wright steps up this year, and does indeed carry this team, this team will perform at a much higher level, and be a World Series contender.

Get creative with the pitching, get creative with the bullpen, and sure, why not second base, but I really don’t think Manny is the answer.

  20. stickguy says:

I’m on record that I don’t like the idea of Manny for the Mets. But, this offer by the Dodgers is really all he should get from an NL team. I can’t imagine watching him stumble around in LF 3 years+ from now.

Now, an AL team that wants him to DH? 4 years and cross your fingers might be OK.

don’t forget, besides being a defensive liability already, he does have bad knees (remember, he almost needed to shut down last year for surgery!) Remember Castillo?

I could see Manny inking the 4 year deal, then heading out for 2 knee jobs, and turning into a dreadlocked Castillo!

2 years though might just keep him interested, since he would be playing for his next contract right away.

Or how about, 2/60 guaranteed, then 2 optins years at 20/each? That worked out last time!
