Newsday is reporting that Willie Randolph turned down an offer from the Washington Nationals to be either the third base or bench coach under Manny Acta.
Diamondbacks manager Bob Brenly, former A’s manager Ken Macha and Randolph are finalists for the open manager’s position in Milwaukee.
Update 10/27…
According to the Daily News, Willie Randolph said he hasn’t rejected any coaching job as of yet.
Randolph, as quoted by George A. King III:
“There are [stories] out there that I turned down the Washington [third base] coaching job. That’s not true. Jim [Bowden] and I spoke and he knew that I was looking for an opportunity to manage and he said he would get back to me. It was never offered, so there was nothing to turn down.”

come on willie swallow your pride manny acta needs a wave em home willie !! – thank goodness a new thread i was goin stir crazy!!!
Thank you everybody for being interested in me !
IS IT TOASTED WILLIE?? i mean your buns not the sandwhich lol
i wonder why the yankees aren’t calling
The Yanks love calling him “one of their own” a “true Yankee” and doing anything to make the Mets look bad. They just don’t actually like him enough to offer him a job.
4 words:
1) Who 2) The 3) Hell 4) Cares?
2.25 mil of the mets money for 2009 will care
apparently you because you
A) read it. B) commented.
Willwaukee would be a good fit. A nice small market with little pressure and a pretty good young team to inheret. He can teach the young guys a thing or two about professionalism, and inflexibility.
yeah and also how to be “one of his guys” and how to “get a nice little rhythm goin’”
as for willie i couldnt care less..
i was thinking a few days ago about teixiera…i looked up his stats…why arent we going after him?? he consistantly puts up 30+ homers per year…100+rbis…300+BA….and IMO one of the best if not the best defensive 1st basemen in the game today. He is also 28 years old..
trade delgado and prospect for bj ryan
then trade fmart, hielman, evans, kunz and/or whoever for matt holliday
sign teixiera
sign cruz (as setup man) and a lefty like biemel
sign garland/lowe (or any FA pitcher thats available)
reyes
beltran
holliday
teixiera
wright
murphy
church
schnieder
(the lineup can be switched around)
johan
pelf
garland/lowe
maine
niese/other FA
ryan (closer)
cruz (R) (setup)
Smith(R) (Specialist)
feliciano/shoew (L) (specialist)
Biemel (L)
Parnell (R)
Stokes(R) (longman)
If you didn’t know, I think the Mets want their payroll below $200 million.
lololol…..i like tex, but he reminds me of beltran. aka a really great player, but not really a superstar. and with that contract he wont live up to expectations.
then again, with tex, you can trade delgado, and just put pagan in LF…..
reyes
murphy
wright
tex
beltran
church
pagan
catcher
is pretty sick.
hey morechocolateplease…i do not understand how u can compare tex to beltran…beltran has been a 280 hitter, 20 homer, 100 rbi guy…he is consistant and keeps those stats year after year….tex has been a 300 hitter, 30 +homer guy, and 100+homer guy…the two of them are completely different players.
yea i know really…we’re not and shouldnt go after him.
He is a great hitter but we’d be giving away to much. I’d rather go cheep on byrnes for 2 years until someone else steps up. That bullpen doesn’t seem too different then last year. I’d rather spend money on K-Rod and keep heilmen around to fight for 5 spot if he can get into a groove. I’m not a fan of Garland for the price.
Horrendous. Trading 3 young players, 2 of them talented arms for a guy who has shown he is a product of Coors Field, and may not be a NY guy, and is gonna cost a fortune.
And Freddy Garcia? The guy has been out of baseball for 2 years, I wouldn’t want to count on him for a spot in the rotation.
B. J. Ryan is expensive as any and isn’t that good. Think Wagner.
well actually, those were just ideas for holliday…i wasnt sure what he would cost. i didnt mention anything on freddy garcia…i hav no idea where u got that from….and bj ryan and billy wagner are completely different people…i dont kno. would we want a closer to get us 38 saves and have an era of 2.4 on our team?? hes a fine pitcher
The idea of trading delgado back to the Blue Jays is pretty funny. They let him walk as a free agent, what makes you think they would want to trade for him now that he is 4 years older?
The Mets are not The Yankees, so you can forget about that ridiculous list. There has been reports Teixeira is staying out west, but if he doesn’t and decides to come east, it will be to the team who can bid the highest, which means he’ll be wearing pinstripes.Trade delgado for Ryan, that will happen when Aretha Franklin fly, or goes on a diet.
whatever you’re smoking, I want some.
Perhaps after I’m done, I won’t make ridiculous comments on metsblog.
milwaukee would be great for willy, so he can continue to trot guillermo mota and eric gagne out there day after day despite costing his team game after game.
The Mets need a strong right handed outfield bat. Manny Ramirez would eat up one of our Type A free agents so we can’t choose him. We should trade F-Mart, Niese, and Parnell for Holliday. We then sign Fuentes, Lowe, and Garcia. Trade/Release Castillo, Feliciano. Sanchez, Show, and Burgos(haha). Then sign Guardado and Farnsworth. Move Murphy to second and keep Delgado
Lineup
1. Reyes SS (S)
2. Murphy 2B (L)

4. Delgado 1B (L)
5. Wright 3B (R)
6. Beltran CF (S)
7. Church RF (L)
8. Schneider/Castro C (L,R)
Rotation
1. Santana LHP

5. Garcia RHP

I like Holliday – a lot – much more than Inge – but I believe Holiday is a free agent after 2010 – is that correct? If so they would need to renegotiate his contract as part of any deal and I’m not sure if he’d do that.
ummm you are joking about this right?
fmart, parnell and neise gone? no
fuentes? no
guardado? no
farnsworth? noooo
keep delgado? maybe
overall though a terrible bullpen and giving up too much for holliday.
We should trade F-Mart, Niese, and Parnell for Holliday
I like Holliday and think he would work out in NYC but that is too much for a one year rental who has Boras as an agent.
why are the mets not considering CC? i get the feeling they will try to sign perez, but CC should only cost $5-6 mil more… it looks like they’ve saved ~$35mil by way of pedro m, o hernandez, o perez, m alou, and s scho. imagine santana, CC, Pelf, Maine, and Niese…
according to Cots Holliday is signed for 13.5 Mil for 2009 and is then a Free Agent with Scott Boras as his agent.
Sounds like a rental to me.
totally a rental. the Mets should not pay a high price for him.
The Yanks are smart to not hire Randolph. A bad start and Girardi will beon the hot seat. Randolph would be the press’ favorite replacement guy. By not hiring them it keeps a target off Girardi.
dont you think the target is on Girardi’s back regardless? they fired his two closest allies in the club house.
who cares about the yankees anyway..
The word is the yanks wan to bring bowa back. so they are probably waiting on him before they talk to willie
Bowa just said today that he is staying in LA with Torre.
get rid of delgado and trade f-mart.
so far fmart looks like another alex escobar with no power.
i would trade him…..but paired with heilman, not him and neise.
only f-mart and neise to get a real ace like peavy
i think its gonna take more than that no offense rockets
Still too early to tell what he is. If he puts up the same numbers, then I think it would be fare to call him over hyped. The fact is that his bat is fast, and his swing is sweet. Don’t worry about his power numbers yet. That doesn’t really come to kids that young with his frame this early. When he keeps filling out the power will come. He doesn’t have the “tools” Alex Escobar had so I don’t think that is an accurate comparison. F-Marts needs to just worry about improving his approach. If he can improve that this coming year, then his production should improve as well.
its put up or shut up time for Omar this coming year.If the mets dont at least make the playoffs he’ll be all but a memory.
and ol Omar has been given more than 1 chance to suceed.
i wonder who actually is the best middle reliever in baseball?
HIELMAN!!
jk
thats is a really good question tho…it is so hard to say because noone really is consistant from year to year, or the consistant ones are closers.
Exactly. That’s why you trade or sign starters and closers and “pick up” middle relievers or use this as a training ground for the young staff.
btw, regarding bullpens. of the four league championship series teams, there was only one bullpen arm who made an appearance in those series who was acquired via multiyear free agency deals. ONE. the rest were trades, scrap heap pickups, or from the farm. joe beimel. that’s IT. you don’t build a pen via free agency.
i dont think that makes a difference…if there are good FA pitchers then sign them…ur saying that if we go sign multiple players that our team will be bad? so a bullpen like this would be bad next year??
krod
fuentes
cruz
biemel
affeldt
smith
stokes/ayala/parnell
if u really think we wouldnt succeed with a pen like that then u are crazy
That is like a fantasy all-star bullpen, the Mets would be lucky to get 1 or 2 of those guys.
Putting major long-term money into guys like K-Rod and Fuentes is idiotic
im trying to make a point…if u read the previous post he said that FA pitchers are no good and that Free AGents are only good when they are traded so i mentioned players from free agency…i wasnt saying the mets should do that
fuentes and krod are closers, not middle relief.
and no, i would not hand out contracts to cruz, affeldt, beimel, or fuentes. honestly, not a single middle reliever. krod is not mariano, but he’s still elite, and at 26 i would get him.
I like Krod as well. I think they have to bring him in. Hey its not our money.
I’d also look at Izzie and Cruz as well for set up.
more chocolate…u r saying that we shouldnt get relievers from the free agent market because they wont do well….forget about contracts and what the mets would or would not do ….this is a pen made up of free agents….these are some of the best middle relievers in the game
It isn’t easy to put together a good bullpen, with the lack of quality releievers in this league. I do believe in the theory of good one year, bad the next, but that can be a gamble. Shoenweis and Feliciano have been bad 2 years in a row.
I do think Heilman will bounce back. He’ll be healthy again and will get his head straight. I just think like Heath Bell, he’ll never succeed here.
so are you saying we should keep heilman, or that we should ship him out?
ship him, or wait till midseason and wait for his value to go up
move him now. he could also continue to stink up the field. i think most gm around the league know Heilman is unhappy here and know his potential. He still has very high value.
There is a lot of luck in bellpen forumula.
Look at the Phillies. Ryan Madson has been eratic his whole career. Lidge stunk for awhile. Eyre stunk for awhile. Now these guys are lights out.
I do believe in roles, something Jerry seems to be against. Madson in the role of 8th inning guy has been great, same for Durbin in the 7th. These guys weren’t good when they were used as all-purpose middle reliever, long man, emergency starter.
Something to think about.
what is also common about those 4 you mentioned? NONE were acquired through free agency.
for some reason i can see omar putting murph into left field, and useing the same lineup as last year…including castillo…that would be horrible
I know I’m gonna take a lot of heat for this question, but I have to ask it.
Would the Royals be interested in a deal with Soria if it included Guillen without taking back a bad contract like Castillo? It would be like the Beckett/Lowell deal a few years back. Are they THAT hard up for cash to consider it?
Maybe Murphy and Heilman for Soria and Guillen?
Let the tirades begin!
i can see it…i think they would want much more than just murph and hielman but i do see them making a trade to get guillens contract gone…maybe fmart, kunz, hielman, and evans?? i really dont kno what it would take but i do kno i would trade alot for soria…..this guy can pitch
heilman is addition by subtraction in my mind and evans isn’t going to pan out to me, so i definitely gotta pull the trigger on that deal. Is that all it’s gonna take?
They’re dying to get rid of Guillen’s contract, but not at the expense of Soria. Heilman could start for them, but Murphy is a DH, and they’re already invested in Billy Butler.
The thing is that soria is under team control at a reasonable price for the next few yeara. there is no reason for the royals to trade him unless they were overwhelmed with a package for him. what you suggested isn’t nearly enough.
they may want to dump guillen, but unlike castillo he is still pretty productive. someone will take him without having to send soria with him
The Mets should be actively shopping Nick Evans. He is young, cheap, decent and can be used at different positions. I’m all for getting younger and cheaper, but he just won’t be that good, but is decent enough to help a bad team.
Omar should be trying to get a decent arm like Affeldt for him
affledt is a free agent….i do agree tho that we should trade him…he is very good trade material..even tho i think he is gunna be a very very good offensive first baseman in like 4 or 5 years
i’d rather go with evans at 1B, trade delgado for edwin jackson, sign krod, and sign either lowe and ollie, or CC, sign juan rivera
jose
murph
wright
beltran
church
rivera
evans
catcher
johan
cc
pelf
maine
neise
krod closer
edwin setup
kunz/parnell 7th
smith/feliciano specialists
this is actually a cheaper team than one with delgado, lowe, and perez…..and better in terms of pitching. it’s also a younger team full of a lotta guys who came up together, like the phils and rays…..
i think beltran as the leader would be the best, b/c he really has tried to a$sert himself, and his steady nature is very healthy as well as his clear competitiveness.
sorry but Evans is just not that good to put at 1B. To me he’s like the second coming of Dave Magaden.
Delgado is still going to hit 30 – 80 – .265
did anywhere there i discuss how evans is even close to what delgado is? but he is young and cheap and now is a great time to trade delgado to get something of value for him. and he frees up salary.
pitching wins, not 30 HR 80 RBI .265 poor defensive sluggers.
if dumping delgado helped our pen and starting pitching, you should do it. what did the mets gain from his 2 months of domination this year? NOTHING.
that’s fine but who do you propose we trade him for? And more importantly. who’s left in that lineup that scares anybody?
I’m not a big fan of Delgado but he basically was the team MVP for the second half. No offense to Evans but he’s not much better defensively let alone his diminished bat – I don’t think he’s leading us to the promised land either.
you ddidnt read my post then clearly, doc.
trade delgado for edwin jackson, who is on the block. the rays could use a DH, as they have an option on flloyd, and delgado would be a cheap one year alternative to help them compete next year.
the diminished bat is a tradeoff that results in much better pitching. jackson would be a dominant setup man, and the salary relief allows you to sign Krod and CC.
Dominant pitching is clearly better than dominant hitting.
It also changes the dynamic of our team, and gives our youth a chance to prove themselves, which is healthy for a ball club.
you are not replacing delgado. you are changing the dynamic of the team and sending it into a different direction that is more balanced, youthful, and pitching dominant. in case you haven’t noticed, the formula we have been using ISNT WORKING.
Why and the blue hell would The Rays want Delgado? They can easily find a much better/cheaper option for a DH than someone you described as a “diminished bat”.The Rays have shown to want to build a team base on the philosophy of youth, defense, and pitching. There is know way they would trade a young pitcher with a cannon arm, for an old DH who would cost them 16 million.
you dont even know how much delgado costs next year, so please don’t comment. where did i EVER say he was a diminished bat?
last time i checked, DH’s DONT PLAY DEFENSE.
last time i checked, cliff floyd is the same age as delgado, and not even half the bat.
last time i checked, the rays are in the world series and will have money, and to keep pace with upgrading sox and yanks, they’ll need more hitting.
last time i checked Carlos Delgado is the best one year rental DH in all of baseball.
and just so you can learn something, delgado makes 12 million next year. that is the ultimate kinda contract u wanna pick up for 38 HR and 110 RBI.
and also they’ve made it clear they will shop edwin. and if you have to throw in heilman or another arm, thats cool too.
there is no way the rays are going to want delgado…i just dont see it
Morechocolate about “what the Mets won with the 2 months of Delgado’s domination? You said NOTHING ? They won ALMOST everything because if it wasn’t for that we would’ve been like 20 gms behind and we go down in the last gm of thr yr and everybody was asking to break the core so imagine what would’ve happen. So i think that Delgado’s dominance was very important to us .
Heilman, Evans and Schnieder for AJ Pierzynski
sign Delgado for one more year
Murphy to second
sign KRod, Garland and Lowe
LOLOL i hope you are a better doctor than you are GM…..no offense.
garland is terrible. lowe is good but he is old. and do not even get me started on that absurdly silly AJ Pierzynski deal.
chocolate…ur posts are becoming very very annoying…garland is a great #3 or 4 starter and young…lowe is old but has a lot of postseason experience…and aj pierzinski is not a horrible idea.
Garland was much worse than a 3 or 4 last year. And I don’t care if Lowe has post season experience the last thing we need to do is give big contracts to more old players.
Lets sign Pudge ! he will be our leader, hands down !
let’s not and say we did
hey choc – settle down – no need to get snarky. I can see your point on Delgado and would make that deal but you have to be dreaming to think we’d land CC and Krod. It just ain’t happening. No offense.
As far as AJ – I guess you’re happy with Schnieder? He’ another soft player of which we already have one too may of. Check the stats for catchers and I think you’ll see where Pierz stands. Plus he is a NY boy..
AJ of course is better than Schneider. But he is not worth Schneider + Evans + Heilman. That’s just idiocy.
and make no mistake, i’d LOVE AJ on this team.
nice 300 foot HR by ruiz. they need to explode that stadium, with the people in it.
and if i have to hear the rocky song one more time, i’m gonna explode.
I still can’t understand how I’m watching the Phillies in the WS. O.K. – they’ve got Hammels. Meyers has got like a 9.0 ERA in post season. Moyer, I don’t think has made it out of the 5th inning yet. The big guns and the top of the order haven’t done anything. Only the bottom of the order and the most unlikiest hitters are doing anything. Coming into this game they had like what? – 1/31 with RISP? And two on and no outs in the first and they get one run on a groundout. Bah…
Go Rays.
when the umpire calls everything moyer throws a strike, it’s hard to do anything. every pitch to that at bat for upton was out of the zone. and god forbid fox show it, b/c they are having a love fest with moyer right now.
it’s good to see the Tom Glavine strike zone being applied for Moyer, and Garza getting squeezed. Every pitch is out of the strikezone. It’s not “smart pitching” it’s horrendous umpiring b.c. the guy is old.
I was just thinking the same thing about Glavin. Later years, he was only successful if he got that call on the right on the corner, but a bit outside.
and these umpires GIVE them the outside call “b/c they are veterans”…..the philly fans are such a disgrace btw.
LOL- was readingsomeof their commentson Beerleaguer Thurs night. They wanted the umpiring crew fired b/c of some of those questionable calls that didn’t go their way. Tonight – the homeplate umpire is the best thing since sliced bread…..
i think dominant sp and a good pen is the key. sign CC and Lowe… Johan, CC, Pelf, Lowe, and Niese… that’s awesome 5 (ok may be not Niese yet… but with other 4, he’ll less pressure). Move Maine to the closer role. Other righties in the pen would be Parnell (set up?), Stokes (long man), and Smith (RH specialty). We still need 2 LH pitchers… Keep Delgado at 1st and Murph plays 2nd. Could look for a goof RH bat/good defense in LF, but I think Tatis/Pagan duo can get the job done for another one year…you can’t get all-stars at every position! I would send evans to buffalo have him play every day at 1b…lets see what he can do w/ golve and against RH pitching… may be he’ll be our 1b in 2010. Same goes for F-mart… if we’re going to build this team for the long haul, we need to hold onto our home grown youth… btw, i’m glad to see no one’s calling to trade reyes and wright any more!
Moyer has been in the league for a long time, and he hasn’t had any stuff for awhile. The reason why he’s still in the league is because somehow, he manages to do it regardless and leave everyone scratching their heads.
Geez, tone it down a little.
12 years old?
Fine job by Jamie Moyer
Outstanding defensive play by Moyer as well.
Still a close game.
Garza didn’t have it going as well as he did the other night, but game is still close.
Bullpens now the big factor.
And where is that chocolate coming from, lol.
Hey, it’s Chad Bradford.
Still a 12 year old though.
Let’s see how good Madsen is.
Past your bedtime?
Upton on base. No one out.
great baserunning by upton
God I hope Philly blows this game,
I see extra innings.
Does Lidge come in with the game tied in the 9th?
Wow, more Bradford.
Leadoff batter walked. Not good percentages for keeping the game tied.
Did they say the regular season bullpen had an era of 1.24? Wow.
Stupid move by Werth to get picked off 2nd.
Amazing, no run scored.
Unbelievable is right. I would like to say “never have I seen such an untalented team do so well” but this is baseball, a sport where luck can conquer all. So a lack of a starting pitching staff, mainly average relief pitching, and hitters that strike out too much are all no match for pure relentless lady luck. Like the fact that the Cubs turned out to be a joke, leaving nothing but the usually sub .500 Dodgers standing between this crap team and the world series. And now that they’re there, they’ll win with Tampa Bay’s comedy of errors. But I still have hope! The Phillies may have clinched not watching TB celebrate on their home turf, but this series is far from over.
Cry, cry , cry…I laugh at your tears.
Yeah…lucky. Keep telling yourself that. Maybe one day, you’ll believe it.
Why did the Rays deserve that game…because the 1B ump handed them 2 runs????
go back to eating your scrapple and drinking yer rolling rock you philthy troll !!
Tim McGraw spread some of Tug’s ashes on the mound at Citizens Bank Park.
Discuss.
i think thats a fallacy tug shunned a relationship with tim even at the shea goodbye ceremonies only tugs younger children were there
c’mon philly vs nyc arguments… how stupid is this … save your hate for Omar
Could there be a dumber comment? If you’re so desperate to hate the Mets, maybe you shouldn’t be a Mets fan.

we would need to get a lefty somehow but we solidify the 8th and 9th inning which seemed to be the biggest problem last year…and we get a very solid catcher in russel martin and ibanez in right as well
I really hope the Mets attempt a trade for Scott Olsen. The Marlins are actively shopping him and Olsen would make a great addition for our 5th spot in the starting rotation. I think we should learn from the past experiences and not rush Jon Niese onto the scene too early as we had done with Mike Pelfrey. It will be much better served for Niese’s development to get a complete grasp at the minor league level and allow him the proper time to work on his mechanics.
Also, according to the Miami Herald, a deal that would have sent Mike Jacobs to the Royals collapsed last week. One of the minor leaguers Kansas City was sending over to Florida was found to have some medical issue. I just found that to be interesting, especially when so many comments here lately, have called for us to trade Delgado to the Royals.
who would the marlins want for olsen??…i think he would be a very good #5 on the mets…then we can go and sing a free agent starter and our rotation would be set with johan, pelf, free agent, maine, and olsen…i cant see him costing tooo much
I have no idea what the Marlins may be looking for, but maybe we could round up a prospect or two. Maybe we can sell them on Mike Carp and someone?
stupid question – why would the marlins trade olsen within their division where they finished a respectable 3rd place and trade a decent pitcher to one of their cheif rivals??
Well, I would tend to agree with your logic. However, we have completed trades with them in the past and they been in the full-fledged rebuilding mode for a couple of years now. If the right package that they are looking for is put together, then I see no reason why they should not give it some consideration.
i understand your thinking process philny but the marlins were in 1st place for a while they are talking about adding payroll – i think they will make themselves stronger and actually try to compete again next season i just think the mets and phils will be among the teams they wouldn’t wanna deal with
Ok not to knock the admins but even though it was kinda bad seeing some rabid Mets (or very sarcastic Philly) fan spam this post with all kinds of comments, I have to wonder why those particular comments got purged but when some rabid Philly fan comes around and spew all kinds of angry anti-Mets comments the end up staying in their respective posts without getting purged. Now the admins could be stepping up comment watching, which would be a good thing but I just felt like this was a little strange.
agreed snips i mean there has got to be a level of civility over here – it should not get nasty like it has
coach herm and the chiefs take the lead!
Oh NO!
So much for our soft schedule…
same ol j-e-t-s mets mets mets !!!
guys go this from mlbtraderumors
the Mets have decided to pa=ss on Francisco Rodriguez, and will instead pursue Brian Fuentes, as well as Derek Lowe. The Red Sox may also make a strong pitch for Lowe.also kenny rogers wants to pitch again next season – comments?
Yeah, I caught that too Rusty. I hope that it is more posturing by Omar than anything else, possibly an attempt to drive Francisco’s price down. I really am not in favor of signing Fuentes at all myself. He has lost the grip on the closer role twice for the Rockies over the past three seasons. If he cannot finish the job in a low pressure environment like Colorado, how will he ever fare well here? Not to mention, the fact that he is your traditional 33 year old closer reaching free agency. For the money Fuentes is going to be seeking, I think it would be a much wiser decision to go the extra mile and get K-Rod. You’re losing a draft pick either way, so let’s go for the long term solution.
damn these filters are killing me i had to put a hyphen between pa and as to spell that work 3 friggin times !!! yeah i hope this is a smokescreen phil
yeah, it would be nice if Matt got a decent filter. The one they employ is really bad.
makes u wanna pull your hair out when u try to make smart posts
Kenny Rogers? He should retire.
i dont get it…whats the point of getting fuentes when u can get krod for 5 mil more….i know it would be 2 or 3 years longer but it is soo worth it.
2 things strike me regarding this. 1) It reminds me how Willie over-valued himself after 2006. He has already interviewed 3 different times for Milwaukee. Why do you think they keep looking away? 2) Yankee fans kept saying “it isn’t Willie’s fault. It is Reyes, Wright or whoever. Yet didn’t they just dump a ton of coaches. Being an ex-Yank, wouldn’t they want to stick it to the Mets? Yet they haven’t called either. Maybe you are not that good.
Typical Steamboat Willie.
So big on players having to pay their dues, but he always refused to pay any dues whatsoever to become a manager.
And was a lousy manager as a result.
Keep sitting home Steamboat. That ensures that the thing at the top of your resume is the greatest choke in sports history.
Creep. You’re entitled to NOTHING despite what you think
hey furi u finally wrote something that made sense you get a gold star :P except that you called willie a creep – deluded yes creep hell no
we know from the past u cant get b type players…when u decide to go cheap you get players who are not performers…we need a performer. culture needs to change in the clubhouse and i dont think lowe and fuentes will excite the team let alone the fans.
Umm what? Plenty of teams go cheap and get performance.
we went cheaper/older with alou over carlos lee. didnt quite work out. although i do like lowe for the rotation the idea of signing fuentes instead of krod bc of money is absolutely ridiculous.
agreed zeile but let me ask you this – based upon alou’s overall 07 season with the 32 game hitting streak did you think it would blow up in our faces and he would only play in less than 60 games? metstradamus mightve got that one right but i thought it was a decent pickup – i was wrong but to go fuentes over krod is rediculos imho
One name who I’d keep an eye on is Brad Penny. From what I have read recently, he is going to reach free agency as the Dodgers are leaning towards buying out the option on his contract. Penny had a sore right shoulder and was out for much of last season. I do not know the full extent of the injury and how far he is in his recovery. If healthy, Penny could stabilize the back end of our rotation. The Boston Globe said earlier this week that the Red Soxs were monitoring the situation. I hope Omar is as well.
the mets should defenitely look at him but do not overpay him
isn’t that the goal with signing most free agents :P
honestly i doubt omar is looking into brad penny at all.
once again we agree zeile i think omar will make a push to resign ollie if not he will make a play for c.c for show then go hard after lowe and if that don’t work he will sign a pitcher like colon off the scrap heap
or freddy garcia. I definitely appreciate what omar has done for the big picture but honestly i think he lacks that shrewd aspect of being a top tier GM like beane, and schurholtz.
Oh come on – is it too much to ask for the Rays to not friggin blow this series??? And what kind of umpiring is this????
i guess the unps don’t like feel good stories
Or doing their jobs.
well we wuz robbed on more than one occasion this past season
Crawford homers.
The games have all generally been good games in my opinion. No blowouts anyway.
Another error by Marlins.
errrr Rays.
Guys, is this really true? Have the phillies really been that good??? I refuse to believe this. Rays are handing this over to them, just like the Mets did this season.
Never mind….the Phils answered this for me just now….Blanton??? Friggin Blanton????
Yes, Blanton.
Gillick is yet another GM who outschools Omar.
Can we please get a real GM instead of this over-rated P.O.S?
I know siding with furioso will get be killed on here but gillick gets a bad rap from a lot of people but he has made a couple of solid moves to put his team over the top. nevermind the lidge move bc we know how that turned out, but getting blanton mid season definitely sured up their rotation and picking up romero last year strengthened their bullpen while ours got weaker. sometimes its those miner tweaks that make the difference. Omar has gotten the main core but has failed in the tweaks department.
This series has been really close between both teams which has kept it somewhat interesting. The umpires have been useless. I still wish the RedSox would’ve been in the world series. They’re tougher and more experienced at handling the pressure.
doesn’t the Phills winning validate the NL East, and therefore the Mets? wouldn’t you rather have the Mets finish 2nd to the best team than some team that didn’t win?
i gotta give the Phillies the credit they deserve as they go out and play their butts off. They have shut down the Rays and also the Rays have played like the youthful team that they are. Having said that, Omar better get his act together this offseason or it will be a long year for Mets fans.
in ‘09.
What a stretch
Some of you will go to any lengths to avoid the obvious – the Mets = c hokers
I wouldn’t mind thinking that the Mets finished second to the best team but the Phillie fans now have something to gloat about. The rivalry makes it feel worse.
I think this series is over if Phillies win tonight. Rays will need a miracle to beat Hamels.
WHAT RIVALRY?
The Mets aren’t even on the Phils radar anymore
Don’t flatter yourselves to think the Mets are even on a par with a championship level team
Phils = c hamps
Mets = c hoke
Time for Reyes to dance I guess
After your pathetic team wins the world Series (which they haven’t yet btw) will you finally stop commenting here?
if only the phils could lose the next three and have their hearts ripped out…oh the joy
They would have to swap uniforms with the Muts and move to NY in order for that to happen!
GO PHILLIES !
I hope the rays take send it it back to tampa!
phillies wolrd series,in a dome has this ever happend berfore?

Ugh, I can’t believe the Phillies are about to win the WS. And we have the bumbling Minaya to look forward to for another 4 years. Ugh.
Na – he’s just had some success with painting those corners in his advanced years. And it’s to his credit that he never really had heat on his fastball and an easy delivery which is why his arm has probably lasted this long.
Sort of what Pedro was attempting too do this year but with all his injuries, he just couldn’t get it going…..
Yeah, I saw. They said something at the beginning of the game on Charlie being glad it was going to be this ump behind the plate b/c he’s a ‘pitcher’s’ ump. I’m sure he’s getting some of those calls due to his vertern status.
Now if the Rays could just figure out how to hit him…….
a vertern status isn’t acceptable either.
wait…what?
And September owned the Mets…again. I hope the Mets winning the meaningless series with the Phils this year keeps you warm at night while the Phils play in October.
and NYY > NYM
You’re the red-headed stepchildren of NYC
Then what does that make the Mets???
Actually, I live in bucolic Bucks County. Lovely place it is. Half of NYC’s CEO’s live here, too.
And Mets have 0 in 1 chance of winning ‘08 series
There haven’t been 120 World Series. Phillies are also 296 games better than the Mets since 1962.
And yet you stayed up until 2AM to watch the game. What does that make you???
Our city has this year’s WS.
Not last year…not this year…not anytime soon.
Uh, since 1962, the Phillies are 3737-3745 and the Mets are 3585-3889 in the regular season. Phillies have 8 division titles (76, 77, 78, 80, 83, 93, 07, 08), Mets have 5 (69, 73, 86, 88, 06). Phillies last lost 100 games in 1961, the year before the Mets entered the league. Mets last lost 100 games in 1993. Doesn’t sound like the Phils are losers compared to the Mets.
Excuse me, Mr. Successful. Can you give me a list of the major Met accomplishments over the past 20 years???
So if I apply your logic here, the Mets would have to win the next 25 WS in a row, just to become the #1 team in their own town…right???
How exactly are the Mets better than the Phillies? The Mets are 304 games under .500 since they entered the league; the Phillies are all of 8 games under .500 during that time. The Phillies have finished first in the division 8 times since 1969, versus only five times for the Mets. What exactly is it about the Mets that make them better than the Phillies? That the Mets weren’t losing a lot of games in the 1920s, ’30s and ’40s? Oh, wait, the Mets didn’t exist back when the whole landscape of baseball was different, so they couldn’t lose back then!
You, sir, are an idiot.
Oh, so now you have to hide behind all of the NY teams to prop up your flimsy argument???
BTW, check your record books.
Sixers > Knicks AND Nets
Flyers > Rangers
Yeah, but it’s not quite as funny as being the most unclutch player while your team is choking in September. That award goes to David Wright.
Not this year, my friend.
Yeah, but it’s THIS year, tool. Funny that you stayed up until 2AM, ON A SATURDAY NIGHT, to watch a Philadelphia team play baseball. Are you a fan of the Phils, or are you just not getting any???
Yes, take comfort in the fact that the Mets were the NL East favorites the past 2 years….only to CHOKE their seasons away in grand fashion. That’s definitely something to be proud of.
I hope the Mets sign Manny to a 5/150 contract, and then he tears his ACL in Spring Training.
WTF are you talking about??? Rollins is locked up. Howard and Hamels are not going anywhere. Utley is locked up long-term. Lidge was extended. The Phils re going to be your headache for YEARS.
Chase Utley signed a $85M, 7-year deal last year.
Jimmy Rollins signed a $40M, 5-year deal in 2005, with club option for 2011.
Thanks for not doing your research and letting me make you look bad so easily.
It sure beats leading the league in blown saves.
Carlos Ruiz got a runner home from third with no one out in a clutch situation and is therefore better than David Wright.
Hey, I can be just as illogical as you!
oh great the trolls come out at night too i figured they be eating their scrapple and drinking their rolling rock
cole hannels looks like he will go to the highest bidder no loyalty to the philthie fans
Yet they’ve only won 1 WS.
rusty, me thinks i was just kidding
i know man just getting over the halloween party hangover last night :P
lol..k
