Fernando Tatis, who just won the MLBPA’s National League Comeback Player of the Year Award, was recently interviewed by David Brown at Yahoo!.
Tatis on why he came back, to build a church in his hometown:
“That’s true. I told my wife and sister in law that if we want to do this, I’m going to have to play baseball one more time. I started to practice and went to the minor leagues and it took me a couple years to make it to the big leagues. Now, our dream has come true. It’s a great feeling for us.”
On his shoulder:
“My shoulder feels a lot better. I feel pretty good. It’s becoming stronger. I’m going to start playing ball in the Dominican Republic. I played three practice games already, practice games, and it’s coming along really good so far.”
…there are so many stories about ballplayers and the negative things they do which makes tatis’s story even that much sweeter…i hope his success last year wasn’t a fluke because the Mets could really use his bat again…

personally, i liked tatis a lot. he had that desire and winning attitude that a lot of the team was perceived to lack this year.
i want to see him on the mets in ‘09, if he can hit like ‘08, we’d honestly be silly not to put him in LF. he played 92 games, hit .300 with something like 11 or 12 homers, right?
put him back in LF, a healthy church in RF, and beltran in RF and thats a ton of production in the outfield, plus tatis is RH. murphy at 2nd base and our position holes are filled at least for the next year or two.
pitching pitching pitching omar!!
beltran in CF* obviously…
Murphy will most likely play LF for us next year. They said he is only playing 2B in the AFL right now because it was decided months ago. After the AFL, he is going to move back to LF for winter ball. Just an FYI. I think he is capable of becoming a solid LF, although I’d like to see if he can play 1st when Delgado leaves. That gives us the option of trading Evans and Carp.
Evans and Carp are throw ins….don’t over value them
our 3 best clutch hitters last year…1st part of season…church…2nd half of season…delgado….in between those two…tatis——
Tatis is a free agent, so there is no guarantee that he will be back with the Mets
TRADE DELGADO FOR BJ RYAN AND BRING IN LO DUCA TO PLAY FIRST BASE AND BAT HIM CLEANUP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tatis is the kind of story that we all need in this crazy world filled with hate and disappointment. I love the guy and his mission. Omar; get this guy and keep him…good karma, baby!
Agreed and well said. I certainly hope we see Tatis back next year in a Met uniform.
