News: Garrett Anderson is a FA, Vlad is Not
By Matthew Cerrone - Oct 29, 2008 11:45 am

The Angels will exercise their 2009 options on OF Vladimir Guerrero and RHP John Lackey, but will decline their option on OF Garret Anderson, making him a free agent.

The 36-year-old Anderson hit .293 with 15 HR and 84 RBI in 145 games this season.

Anderson is intriguing, in that he has hit at least .280 in every year of his career and he’s a left fielder.

However, he’s 36, a left-handed bat, he’s 36, and he has played his entire 15–year career with the same west coast team, which always concerns me when bringing a player in New York.

  1. Agees Catch says:

Omar needs to adopt a Logan’s Run philosophy and sign or trade for no one over 30.

  2. MacD81 says:

The Mets need another lefty hitter like Mr. Met needs a size small hat.

  3. iluvbuckner says:

    and he’s 36

  4. hotchipwillbreakyourlegs says:

Dude looks like he’s going to fall apart at any second. I wouldn’t touch him, and I don’t think omar will even consider it

  5. CaseStreet says:

Damn, I was really hoping to see Vlad in Queens. Oh well.

BTW, if bookies are racking up on Citi tix and the economy continues to tank, I predict there’ll be good deals on single game tix from bookies who’ll be desperate to diminish cost. Plus, they know they’ll make it up with potential playoff tix.

  6. NickA33 says:

So what you’re saying is….he’s 36. No thank you. We’re already one of the oldest teams in baseball. We don’t need to take on the salary of another middle aged player who is nearing the down end of his career. I’ll pa$$ on Mr. Anderson…

  7. mistermet5757 says:

if he was a righty, i’d say bring him in since i’ve always been a fan of his. not the right fit, unfortunately.

  8. fyffem says:

    Don’t want him…

  9. fyffem says:

….I don’t want him as anything more than a reserve player att his stage of his career.

  10. JamesK says:

Ugh. How in the hell is Garrett Anderson intriguing?

    a) he’s old
    b) he’s a lefty
    c) WHEN WILL METSBLOG ACKNOWLEDGE THAT BATTING AVERAGE IS NOT A USEFUL STATISTIC? this is so frustrating – yes, he’s a career .296 hitter, but has a .327 career OBP. This is the relevant number as opposed to BA. UGH!!!

League average OBP during Garret’s career has been .340. His career OBP is 13 points lower. He is not a great major league player, and would be a ridiculous signing for the Mets.

    • Gina says:

Yeah he really wouldn’t be an upgrade over the options we have now for LF, Tatis/Murphy/Evans/superplatoon.

  11. QnsNative1718 says:

Im going to jump on the bandwagon. The guy is intriguing but the last thing this team needs is a lefty 36 yr old.

  12. stickguy says:

Not old anymore Nick. Only Delgado (not counting Wags, since he is out for the eyar, and only his salary remains!) is really old. Then a couple of 32 YO guys (+/-), and youth.

That stat was skewed by Alou and Duque, who barely played (if at all). Them, and Pedro, are gone now. And maybe a good deal comes along and CD goes too!

    • TBlz says:

      Gold, or platinum?

    • Which is exactly the transition we need. It will require patience, though, which is something that seems to run low in NY. We have a decent amount of talented youth in the system, but we need to give it time. Guys like Murphy, Evans, F-Mart, Niese, Parnell, Holt, Kunz…all of them look intriguing. It’s way too early, but even guys like Wilmer Flores (who is now said to be our top prospect), Ike Davis, and Reese Havens could turn out nicely. But who knows, anything could happen and the results are years away.

Bottom line is, we need to keep building for longevity and not just 2009.

    • mattygreen says:

that stat is not skewed… yeah, they played AND THAT’S EXACTLY THE POINT!

  13. Dirtysanchez says:

how old is this guy again…

  14. therealsince86 says:

Ok so we would bring in an 36 year old Church that can’t field as well to play LF? Moving on.

  15. bkfitz says:

Once again, what does this have to do with the Mets?

Anyone with any remote baseball knowledge knows the Angels will very likely re-sign Anderson to a cheaper deal.

  16. zen says:

    no thanks.

avg’d 129 games a year the last 5 year. guys going to fall apart and he’s not a difference maker

  17. the_other_matt says:

For the 30 games he’s healthy for maybe we can platoon him with Alou.

  18. hailmatty says:

Have to agree with JamesK. As knowledgable as Cerrone is, you would think he would be more aware of how little batting average means. Sounded like something Joe Morgan would say.

    • Cactus says:

keep in mind, this is the same guy who thought each blown save by the mets last year was a loss.

  19. CharlieH says:

    RE: Garret Anderson —

    N F W!

  20. Agees Catch says:

Omar’’s Run: An idyllic baseball team that has one major drawback: no one can be signed after 30.

Say no to old ball players!

  21. iamatwork says:

He has had hip problems for like 4 years now. No thanks!

  22. If only he as 35….

  23. AidanO says:

…hat tip to aidano for the link
