In a post to Amazin Avenue, Eric takes a look at long list of things that have happened since
the Mets last won a World Series, during which over 50,000,000 fans have walked in to Shea Stadium, under the watchful eye of seven different GMs.
At Mets Minor League Blog, Toby Hyde takes a look at Eddie Kunz, who continues to have trouble pitching to left-handed batters.
Mark Healy, at Gotham Baseball Magazine, wonders if other teams hate the Mets because of their celebrations, or because of the New York bias that occurs through most of the nation.
In a pot to Mets Geek, I mean, Rays Geek, John provides a statistical analysis of John Maine’s 2008 season, concluding, “To become more effective, he simply MUST reduce his walk rate that was way too high this season.”
Lastly, according to the New York Post, Phillies broadcaster Harry Kalas was heard screaming, ‘See Ya, New York,’ during a fan tribute of the stadium’s jumbotron following the team’s World Series win last night.
…that’s actually sort of sad…i fee badly for anyone with that much envy, that they totally miss the significance of their own happiness, only able to focus on some one else’s misery…

agreed matt. We are obviously pretty important in their eyes to be in their mind rather than them just winning a WS. Let em hate..take a number.
you know what’s so funny about this whole “hate” thing? historically speaking, the mets are not exactly world beaters! in fact, we have stunk pretty much from the start. we’ve had some nice years, but we don’t walk around thinking like yankees fans. i just don’t get the hating.
im on the same boat as you casey…dont understand the hate thing at all. Im still waiting for a un-hyporcitical reason for the hate…
I loved when Milledge went down the line high fiving the fans. Mets need players that play with that sort of excitement.
Lets not, as Mets fans, be hypocrites though. I cringe every time I hear a Yankees s.u.ck chant … and a good portion of the Mets fans are just as guilty as doing the same exact thing when the Yankees lose. Frankly, Mets fans are no one to talk when it comes to this kind of stuff, because Mets fans are embarra.s.sing with the Yankee inferiority complex.
It’s also very annoying that I have to put period’s in between the word “embarras.s.ing.
pretty sure you wont have to be worrying about those yankees su ck chants anymore.. its all about the phillies from now on
I’d have to say you’re wrong. You’ll hear plenty of moronic chants towards the Yankees when we’re not even playing them.
at least the yankees are in the same city as us and if they win theres no doubt a yankee fan will rub it in a mets fans face somewhere. but the fact that the phillies won a title and are thinking about the mets is pretty pathetic. And I agree with casey’s comment, why are the mets hated so much we have 2 titles in 46 years and havent won one in 22 years. in fact we’ve only made the post season 2 years in a row ONCE! And the only bias the national media shows the mets is NEGATIVE so I still dont see the root cause of this.
Rationalizing the Mets fans’ behavior is a form of denial.
I do agree though, that there is a national bias toward the Mets. That has to do with the fact the Mets play in NY. Nothing new there.
isnt the national bias toward the yankees and redsox? Imo the mets are a very distant 3rd
There is a national bias to anything NY.
The national media loves the Red Sox. I could be wrong.
lol i agree in having to proofread everything to make sure you dont have your post erased because of coincidental letter arrangements to “banned words”. Im sure met fans do that kind of stuff. I can only spk for myself but i have no real problem with the yankees. My beef is more with the fans than the actual team. I have never booed anybody. The thing imo mikey is that the only reason i hear that teams hate the mets is SO hypocritcal its laughable. The teams that have said they hate the mets(marlins/phils/nats so far) say they hate the mets because of reyes celebrations. Obviously they forget about hanleys celebrations or vicorinos celebrations(not to mention the bowing praise blanton got at the TOP STEP of the dugout at the WORLD SERIES when he hit the hr…but i guess that doesnt count huh) or dukes celebrations. I dont really read too much into the celebration stuff because it doesnt really bother me. It bothers me though that they would use that to justify their hatred of the mets when they do the same thing they despise us for. I understand the braves hatred but thats was born out of years of rivalry….
Jimmy Rollins knows about “perception becoming fact”. He said that in an interview. This has more to do with media creating perception than it has to do with other teams really hating the Mets because they celebrate.
The only solution to that is that the Mets learn how to actually … win. Then nothing else matters.
agreed.
Fellow NY Mets fans cannot be reached for comment as this was exactly what some of us were saying when we were doing well and the Yankees weren’t. It’s sad but we have to make sure we see things for what they are and not hold ourselves up to some higher standards.
it really is a sad, subconcious gesture.
it’s funny since i have completely no feelings at all at seeing the phillies win versus any other team. i could care less. either the mets win the world series or they don’t. i don’t wish other fans or teams or players misery or happiness (i.e. i could care less about the cubs). all i care about is the mets.
you’re a bigger man (or woman) than I. the increased troll traffic around here all winter…ugh.
man. and, well, i just don’t care who wins if it’s not us. i’m sure the phillies fans are going to troll, whatever. they’ll be obvious.
There is just no one in the phillies organization that deserves any ounce of respect. The fans are a bunch of wild morons and the team and even its broadcaster always have to try to put down the mets even when the mets couldnt be any further down, and they make the playoffs and win a world series. Maybe teams hate the mets for their celebrating but teams should hate the phillies for being immature.
I agree – they’re a whiny, jealous bunch.
Jealous of what? Our second place finish two years in a row?
Our celebrations, obviously. Winning the world series is great and all but they still don’t quite have those Jose Reyes hand gestures quite right.
I am so happy we are going back to battle the Phillies next year with fiery guys like Carlos Beltran. I can’t wait.
Yeah, no way to match the intensity of Pat Burrell….
lol that is pretty sad but kind of funny. It is almost like the fans and people areounf the Phillies wanted to win more to stick to the Mets then for themselves.
See ya NY lol what does that even mean? See ya … yes they will see us next year lol.
When are we going to stop talking about the Phillies? I’m sick of hearing about the Phillies. Let’s talk about the Mets.
If the Mets won it all the Phillies would be the furthest thing from my mind lol I really don’t get it
But hey in Philly they love there Eagles much more and well the Giants were the team last year and are again this year so See Ya Philly lol
Maybe he was taunting the other team in new york? The Yankees own Michael Kay. SEEEE YAA
So silly….Way to act like you’ve been there before Philly…Inferiority complex much?
Why are the Phillies still stressing the Mets they obvisiously have the bragging rights. I wish someone can tell them to get off the MEts jocks already. Geez
In the end, the Mets are one of 29 teams not to win the World Series this year. If the Phillies want to be obsessed with us anyway, let them.
Kunz still can’t get it together?
Another draft pick fail by Omar
Don’t look for him to contribute in 2009….or beyond
Can I focus on another part of this post?
The Kunz thing should be a reminder to folks who think that he is part of the solution to our bullpen woes. The fact is, Kunz is not a terribly highly regarded prospect, and has really shown very little to be excited about. Many posts recently seem to overvalue our prospects, Evans, Parnell, and Kunz all come to mind, and I think we need to be careful and objective when we evaluate what we have and what we need.
Of course, we’re not the GM, so I s’pose it doesn’t matter. But it might help reduce the number of, “Let’s give them Evans and Heilman for (insert star player here)” posts.
According to one of the commenters in the Post article, the “See ya New York” comment was one of many that Kalas said, i.e. one of the obstacles the Phillies had to overcome. There was also a “See ya Milwaukee,” “See ya LA” and “See ya Tampa,” evidently. Can someone confirm, because that changes the tone a lot.
Joe Buck said pretty much the same thing.
“They beat the Mets. They beat the Brewers.” etc
It was more of a season in review deal.
If the Marlins had finished second after battling hard all year, they would have been the first victim mentioned.
Some here are just a wee bit sensitive these days.
Maine was also very high in the league in Pitcher Abuse Points. He needs to learn an out pitch BADLY.
ive never seen a pitcher more desperately in need to develop a splitter in my life. he needs something that goes DOWN and would generate swing and misses. since a splitter is generally thrown the same as a fastball but with a drastically different grip I would figure that would be easiest for him to learn in a short period of time.
This all plays to the inferiority that Philadelphia feels as a city. Sandwiched between Washington and NYC, they feel they are an important city too and wonder why no one, outside their residents, recognizes this and gives them a thought..
So all Maine has to do is reduce his walks? Seems easy enough…
… for us, yes. For John Maine, apparently, no.
Lol I know, I was kind of being sarcastic. It seems like there it should be pretty obvious to most people who needs to reduce his walk rate. And not just that he needs to reduce the 20 foul balls he gives up per an at bat.
Philadelphians have an inferiority complex when it comes to New York. I should know, I’ve lived here for 24 years.
Honestly, I really can’t get angry at Kalas for saying that. He has a legendary voice and really is an icon in that city. That being said, they need to let it go. I understand he may be frustrated that he has done 3 Giants NFL Films Super Bowl videos before doing an Eagles one.
I was at the Super Bowl this year and after the Giants won, the Eagles, Cowboys, and Redskins were the furthest thing from my mind. Gimme a break already.
Don’t you all get it? Judging by the number of Phillies posts on this blog and the huge comment reactions they get… the Philles are in the Mets’ heads. The players… the fans… all of the Mets’ heads.
Considering we’re the only other team in the division that matters, I’m not surprised they’re rubbing it in. We deny it, but had this season gone differently, we’d be rubbing it in, too.
Why do we let them get to us?
From a chat with ESPN’s Keith Law:
Joe (Los Angeles): I don’t mean to Klaw-bait here, I think this is a legitimate question. With the Phillies winning, and with home-grown players having a large role, does this provide any kind of justification for Ed Wade? I know he’s made some strange moves over the years in both Philly and Houston, but didn’t he have a large role in building this championship team?
SportsNation Keith Law: (1:34 PM ET ) I think it’s more of a feather in the caps of Mike Arbuckle and Marti Wolever, as well as their staffs. They drafted a number of the players you saw on the field for the Phils, and provided the players traded for Blanton (who turned out to be pretty key) and Lidge (what a heist that turned out to be). Rollins, Utley, Howard, Hamels, Myers, Madson, Burrell – all drafted by the Phils. That’s pretty damn good.
This, folks, is why you develop a strong farm, even if it means a few years of suffering first. Once you have that strong farm, if you manage it correctly it can be a self-sustaining system of championship or near-championship teams.
MEMO: TO HARRY KALAS, I SUGGEST YOU GO SEE YOUR DR. ASAP TO DETERMINE WHY YOUR SALIVARY GLANDS CONTINUE TO GENERATE HORSE MANURE, THIS CONDITION IS NOT GOOD AND THE PROGNOSIS IS WORST ( YOU WILL EVENTUALLY CHOKE ON YOUR OWN MANURE WHILE BROADCASTING A METS BEATDOWN ON YOUR PHILLIES) FOR THE SAKE OF YOUR FAMILY PLEASE SEE A DR.
actually what harry said was that everyone in baseball wrote the phillies off at various points in the year.
it was something like
“they said we could never catch up to the mets in sept. see ya mets”
“they said we couldn’t win a short series against the brewers. see ya CC”
“they said we couldn’t beat the dodgers. manny something something fanny”
“they said we’d never beat the rays… (i was too excited to remember the whole thing)”
we philadelphians aren’t used to winning things. excuse us if we don’t celebrate up to your standards. there’s obviously a large degree of Schadenfreude in sports. and given that the rays, dodgers, and brewers barely have fans to gloat in front of, it’s pretty natural that we’d want to see how the mets fans are reacting
It is quite evident that you ” Philadelphian’s aren’t used to winning things ,” I’ll say, the smashing of bank & luggage store window’s, setting dumpster’s on fire while busting beer bottles to the ground, the destruction of bus shelter’s and of course the true Philadelphian past time turning over other families suvs and busting out their windows, i concur whole heartedly you Philadelphian’s DO NOT CELEBRATE UP TO OUR STANDARDS.
Once again Metsblog is obsessed with the Phillies! Who cares what they do, worry about the Mets! You are making yourselves worse than Phillies fans! After the last few years Mets fans now have the worst reputation of all sports fans thanks to people like you!
1993Mets, understand the context of my blog, it was in reply
to “stevejeltz” comment concerning my previous blog about the phillie broadcaster who according to the NY Post had slighted the Met fan’s (see opening of thread) I for one am not obsessed with the Phillies.
As far as Met fan’s having the ” worst reputation of ALL SPORTS ” I THINK YOU NEED TO DO SOME EXTENSIVE RESEARCH TO VERIFY YOUR COMMENT UNTIL YOU DO THAT AND PRESENT IT ON THIS BLOG MAY I SUGGEST YOU SHUT YOUR PIEHOLE BEFORE COMMENTING PREMATURELY.
Why mention it then? Stop giving Mets fans the reputation of being whiners and crybabies!
93Mets, you ask why mention it then??
Either you didn’t read my blog or didn’t understand my blog or worst you’ve been inhaling the fumes from the dumpster fire’s in Phillie, which is it ?
