The Mets have come to terms on a one-year deal with OF Fernando Tatis worth $1.7 million.
Tatis, who was named the National League’s comeback player-of-the-year, batted .297 with 11 HR and 47 RBI in 92 games before his season ended due to a separated shoulder in September.
Earlier this week, Tatis told David Brown of Yahoo! that his shoulder ‘feels a lot better,’ and he expects to be ready for the start of spring training.
…i’m glad tatis is back in the fold, he was a vital part of the team last season…tatis is the type of effective role player they need on this team, but should not be relied upon to make more than the 63 outfield starts he made last season…

I agree. It was definitely a good idea to re-sign Tatis and limiting his starts is key to getting the most out of him so when he is called upon he is fresh.
He also seemed to hit well of the bench, which is no easy task even for great every day players.
im glad hes back, just like i was with marlon and easley. meaning its no big deal either way. bench players are like bullpen guys, hit and miss.
Speaking of left field I heard Heyman said on WFAN with Francesa this afternoon that the Yanks could also be interested in trading for Holliday.
I think the Mets have potentially more to offer the Rockies in terms of MLB ready prospects, but wouldn’t they rather trade him to the AL if they felt the deals were similar? I sure hope not, I am totally on board with doing what has to be done to get Holliday, big fan if his.
I’d love to have holliday, but with so many holes to fill it may be hard to trade all your chips for what would probably be a rental
So what has to be done?
Holliday is a free agent after ‘09. He’s a rental who will cost something like 18M/year for 6 years (at least) after next year. I wouldn’t even give up Murphy by himself for him–and I know Murphy’s unproven and I know Holliday’s great. I can wait a year for him, thank you.
how about trading for olsen then sending him to rockies in a package for holladay?
i like tatis but omar needs to be creative and fast
Why not wait awhile and see how his shoulder is in a few months? Was he required to undergo a physical? Or is he on the Castillo “trust” contract?
He was expected to be out two weeks with his injury and was preparing to play in the postseason if they got that far. Didn’t seem like a serious injury at all, but either way they probably have a physical as part of every deal.
Bad move (but any Omar move nowadays is a bad move)
Tatis will not be of any use to this team next season.
This team needs a much change as possible
I wouldn’t necessarily call this a bad move, just as long as he’s not being relied upon as a starter. The team certainly could have used Tatis the last two weeks of the season, he was one of their better clutch hitters……
How do you know that Tatis won’t return to his pre injury numbers? Do you know something the rest of the world doesn’t? The Mets wouldn’t have even come close to contending if it weren’t for Tatis. Sure I would love to have Holliday and then platoon Tatis and Church in right field, or even Manny being Manny in left. Murphy will be the starting 2nd baseman at Citi Field this spring and the one big signing this year will be CC Sabathia and and as Howie Rose says, put it in the book.
Put your money where your mouth is. Tatis should be a very useful Low-Cost Bench guy who can play all corner positions. At only $1.2M/yr. it should be a bargain.
hahaha. i do agree with that, was tatis really the mets 1st priority soon as fa period opened up when the phills just 1 the WORLD SERIES???
unbelievable
Geez man, was he supposed to sign CC or KRod today?? Make a huge trade 12 hours after the Series ended??
He re-signed Tatis NOT because it was priority one, but OBVIOUSLY because Tatis wanted to come back, we wanted him back, and other teams were not exactly going to offer him 5 years and $30 mil.
Drinking coffee is not my first priority of today but it’s the first thing I did.
Usually (actually ALWAYS), the big time FAs wait til the market has settled to sign. Especially with boras.
KROD/Tex/CC are signing in February. I think the mets will eventually get fuentes, but I’m not checking the papers every morning waiting for it to happen.
Ahh the infamous Castillo “trust” contract. I started running cold sweats when I think of the money he has left on his contract. Especially considering next year he will prob be a backup to everyone’s favorite Irishman, D-Murph.
hey we are still paying for bobby bo ricky henderson and mo vaughn so why not cut lethargic louie and add him to the mets welfare roll lol art howe can say how much he was battleing when he’s on the buffet line ” damn i never saw a man with such reflexes when he was going for the roast pork” :P
Here’s where we’re at as of now:
C- So mediocre, the GM is already looking to upgrade after 1 season
1B- Old, tanked for the previous manager
2B- Leaving 2B unmanned would contribute more to the team
SS-Likes to celebrate, but can’t back it up. Has a nice habit of disappearing in Sept
3B- Unclutch
OF- Murphy is the only real man among the regulars, but he’s too unproven. What can be expected from him? Church is mediocre at best. Beltran is excellent
Pitching:
Johan is a beast
#2 – Don’t have one
#3- Pelfrey has to prove he can do it again
#4- Maine is off surgery and also has a lot to prove
#5- Don’t have one
#6- Niese. You simply cannot rely on Niese as a #5 this season. They need a reliable #5
Bullpen – HA. HA. HA.
But I’m glad Omar got Tatis back in the fold!
I normally don’t agree with your highly negative posts, Furioso but “leaving 2b unmanned would contribute more to the team” gave me a nice laugh. God, Castillo is terrible….
We’re lucky they even noticed the catcher position and are actually trying to do something about it instead of going the whole Castillo “WELL HE USED TO BE GOOD!” approach.
Wow, Furioso called Beltran excellent, Santana a beast, Murphy a real man, and bordered on complimenting Pelfrey!!
I like this new positive side Furioso! Keep it up!
I know! He hasn’t mentioned the words ‘Phillies’ and ‘heart’ either….yet.
someone replaced furioso’s brain with evan robert’s this must be a halloween prank :P
Exactly why do you consider yourself a Mets fan?
Man, Furiso, when you put it like that…
Geez what do you want omar to be doing today? it will be 15 days before he can talk to other teams’ free agents. this is a non story. he signed a bench guy.
i agree with furioso?? it the end of the world as we know it lol
He’s got almost any many loose screws as Ollie does.
but does he have as many as carl everett lol
I like this signing from the standpoint of that we are in serious need of a bench.
I totally agree.
Tatis seems to be a very serious guy, a family man, etc, who truly appreciates his second chance in MLB.
Also, he is absolutely perfect for our bench, hit very well in big spots, and can backup/platoon with Church against tough lefties, be part of a possible LF platoon and/or spot Evans/Murphy depending on who plays there, and can also play a little first base to rest Delgado, should he be back.
Not priority one, but certainly a good move in all aspects.
tatis is like the blue lou marini of the team – quiet but full of power – and he makes a great fried chicken lol
Once again you have completely captured the essence of the situation!
i try i try i am the barak obama of mets blog except im a independant white atheist who liberally quotes the blues brothers star wars monty python and the holy grail and all the rocky’s except # 5
How about this one?
John Candy: “Rusty….may I call you Rusty? Has your father ever killed anyone?”
Anthony Michael Hall: “Just a dog….oh, and my Aunt Edna.”
Chevy Chase: “You can’t prove that Russ!”
this is crazy this is crazy
greatest cameo – eugene levy as the car salesman
greatest john candy line (translating from swedish) from the movie splash – he has a 2 inch penis lol
Eugene Levy should have gotten an Oscar nomination for his role in A Mighty Wind…he gets finnier and funnier with age….
yup only if he stop doing dreck like “the man” with samuel l jackson loved him in armed and dangerous lol also stay tuned with the late great john ritter
Yeah, he does some garbage when they write him fat checks, but he has been hilarious in all of the Christopher Guest movies….
Now here is somebody who knows baseball and understands what the Mets are trying to do. You other people who bash Minaya ought to look at all those non contending teams year after year after year. He has built an excellent nucleus and has developed a better than average farm system and is not afraid to take a chance on older more experienced players who every team needs to nurture young players. Did anyone happen to look at the Rays 25 man roster. How about Floyd and Perci. I guess most of you aren’t satisfied to contend year after year. I want to see a WS Banner over Citi Field like to the rest of the loyal Met fans, but I’m willing to wait a couple of years to see it happen not once but often. Wouldn’t that be better than 62- 100 every year?
Relax people, it was a one year deal!
Best case scenario, he plays his a$$ off and becomes a Type B player, we offer arbitration on his 1.7M contract, he leaves and we take the draft pick for the bench player everyone is complaining about now.
Worst case scenario, he doesn’t pan out and we are out 1.7M. We don’t have to keep him on the roster if it doesn’t work out, so it’s not like it even costs us the roster space.
Either way, this isn’t the biggest move in the world, but we definitely need some clutch hitting and Tatis was definitely that last year, so I don’t see the harm in bringing him back for another year. Heaven knows all of you would be whining if we didn’t bring him back anyway.
hey you never know he could turn out to be the healthy second coming of valentin – he seems to have that fire and leadership qualitiies
ahhh thank goodness no philly trolls lurking about anyone remember the movie the ghoulies??? yeah thats what a philly troll looks like lol
guys we have to see if matt will do a meet and greet so we can place the faces to the names u know like a holiday party – unfortunately i could’t get to any of the parties during the summer
resign ollie,
sign cruz
sign ibanez
sign garland
trade for putz or sherril, or street or soria or ryan…whoever
reyes
murph
beltran
delgado
wright
ibanez
chruch
schnieder
johan
pelf
ollie
garland
maine
closer
cruz
smith
feliciano
stokes
parnell
another lefty would be needed but something like that..
it solidifies the 8th and 9th innings most importantly
too many type a’s im afraid phuk plus i’d rather see affeldt in the closer role than cruz but something tells me we will have chad “pinky” tusk- cordero as our closer lol
cruz and ibanez are both type a..dont we get an extra if we resign ollie?? i really am not sure how it works…i believe garland is a type b
don’t think so and are you gonna risk 2 prospects for cruz and ibanez? i’d rather go out and get lowe – at least you know he’s good for 200 innings and at least 15 wins on a good team
true
get weatrhers and affeldt in the pen at least they have rubber arms
It is only a matter of time before we sign Cordero, which would probably be a pretty good move…he and Omar are probably together right now…..he is only 26 and could he be our Lidge??
lidge with a torn labrum? i’d rather have craig swan with a torn rotator cuff and a hang nail lol
Hey, nobody’s perfect!
And even pitching with a broken elbow, Cordero would have been among the top 3 in our pen last year!
And the 4 Mets to lead the league in ERA—Johan, Doc, Tom Terrific—and Craig Swan!
Craig Swan was actually very, very good for a few years there in the 70’s. He just had the misfortune of pitching on some very, very bad teams!
IIRC, he started in the pen before hitting the starting rotation (but don’t hold me to that).
Maybe Heilmann is the next Swannie?
btw guys easley wise and ollie filed today
let them walk. i don’t want to see anyone of them back in a mets uniform especially wise.
get the 2 draft picks for perez.
Whatever will the Mets do without Matt Wise? He was such a contributor in the Mets’ bullpen this year…..
can’t go wrong with a one year deal. doubt he’s getting much.
I think we should resign Pedro to a 1-year deal also as long as he takes a significant discount. If you take a look at Pedro’s stats, I believe they show he was very unlucky this season.
For example, his homerun allowed to flyball ratio was way higher this season compared to his career average. It was 15.6% this year compared to 8.8% from 2002 to 2008 (fangraphs doesn’t have these stats before 2002). I took a look at how many of Pedro’s runs allowed were a result of a homerun, and turns out 26 of his 68 ER allowed were due to homeruns. I know this is not a perfect way to do it, but if you consider that his career hr/fb ratio is 56% of what it was this season, what if you alter his stats so that he only allows 56% of those runs due to homerun? That leaves him with 57 ER, which reduces his ERA to around 4.55…
Also his babip was .329 compared to .291 for his career.
Im not saying pedro is going to return to 2005 form, but I think he can be a good #5 guy as long as hes willing to sign for cheap. If Pedro pitches next year, I will not be surprised if his era is around 4.
4.55 still’s not that great, for a guy who only gives you 5 innings a night. I love Pedro, he is and forever will be one of my favorite players of all time, and I’m glad I got to see him wear a Mets uniform for a few years, but I think his time is up.
it’s over for pedro. unfortunately.
Excellent comment on Pedro. He is far from done. Last year was injuries, family problems and yet he was there trying his best in the stretch run. Ran into some bad luck early in the games but that happens to even aces during the course of the season. He is way beyond anything that resembles a # 5 in all of baseball. I would sign him to a year contract with a team option for a second year loaded with incentives based on 2009 performance. In the clubhouse he is the best and if Manny comes to the Mets it would be because of Pedro and Pedro would keep Manny in his place. Once again a great and smart comment from someone who knows the game and writes intelligent posts not the crap I see here about movies. Go do that someplace else.
why wont any of my comments ever show up?…i’m getting really frustrated!
oh but that showed up right?..this is really irritating me…
wtf
this is really ticking me off. I had a long comment and it wont post it for some reason. No swear words or anything. Trying to figure this out. someone please help
the filter is bizzare on this site. Any letter string of a-s-s (even in the middle of a word like embaras-s) gets a psot blocked. Manage_ment also seems to do it. su_cks may be antother.
Oh, and Ken Grfffffy jr? Black hole it goes!
does anyone remember when we were like 3 games up on the phils, and every philly fan out there had given up on their team and said the year was over. And J-Rollins came out and said the Phillies fans were front runners? At that point in time, i would have bet every dollar to my name that the phils wouldnt make the post season, let alone win the whole damn thing. WTF happened? Its like a big long dream. 2 historic collapses in a row. I can deal with that. Just move on and try to fix it. But i’m having a real hard time accepting the fact that the hated Phillies won it all. PLease someone tell me that this is just a big long bad dream. Its still like Sept 1st right? And the mets are in 1st place.
i am so sick of this website. I’m trying to post comments and nothing is showing up
Well my fellow Mets fans, I will see y’all next year at our new field. Have a nice winter. C’mon Omar, lets go out and get Fuentes, a good left fielder, and obviuosly a revamped bulllpen, and a young catcher, and try it again. And resign Ollie. Resign Pedro too for long relief. Peace out everybody
sorry, but some things show up and some things dont. Confused
You just made 8 posts in a row.
They’re showing up.
Now stop spamming. ;)
chad cordero is a free agent. i know he was injured last year but he could be a great 7th-8th inning guy.
$1.7 million for this guy? Is Omar kidding?
Are YOU kidding? For how Tatis performed last year, and after getting the comeback player of the year award – I bet he could’ve found a much better contract elsewhere. This is a BARGAIN.
Right- $1.7 million for a guy who’s shoulder broke down and now he says it “feels better’. It’s a silly amount of money to throw away at a role player with an uncertain injury status.
I would have made this move in january when all of the other pieces are in place. This smells of the castillo deal where omar committed earlier than he had to
But it’s a ONE year deal. Not a FOUR year deal.
I swear to god – Omar could buy a time machine, bring back Babe Ruth in his prime and sign him to a five year deal and you guys would complain about it.
We have far more pressing needs than a utility player. Idon’t care if it is a year. It’s still a roster spot. Still on less player we can protect in the ruleV
there are enough pieces of dead wood that I don’t think it will be a problem protecting what has to get protected. That is actually an advantage of having lots of talent lower down in the minors, they don’t have as much service time!
I like this deal. The bench really was an issue last year, and Tatis can help shore it up. Of course, it would be good if the entire bench didn’t end up as starters!
Ditch Endy though. Doesn’t add enough value IMO. And I don’t think easley is worth bring back 9someone posted that he filed for FA? I thought he was signed for 2009?)
anyway, don’t discount these smaller moves. BPs and benchs get overlooked, until they are exposed and letting the team down. I really hope that Tatis does not have to be a starter next year, but at least he is a viable fill in option, and a strong bat off the bench.
Get a guy that can play IF better than easley, ditch marlon, and they should be OK.
Actually, I really want to see Murphy as the starting 2B. If that happens, a veteran guy that can share some time and maybe act as a defensive replacement sometimes would be good.
Chad Cordero would be a great part of the bullpen bridge, if healthy.
Agreed. Another low risk guy that can’t hurt. Sign him, Cruz and Everday Eddie and let them compete for closer. Then sign Rivera for LF. That leaves a ton of money to replace Pedro and Ollie.
I seriously can’t believe that people are complaining about Omar resigning a guy below market value for 1 year when that player was a great story last year. Not to mention the fact that he can play every position except for Catcher and Pitcher.
I agree 100%. Tatis shouldn’t be relied on every day, and shouldn’t even platoon with church. Church is a better player every day. But Tatis can play 1st, 3rd, LF, RF. And if he returns and isn’t good, you can designate him for AAA, and if he doesn’t clear waivers so be it.
As much as i would love the Holliday’s and Manny’s. That’s not what the Mets need. They need some gritty Role players. Look at the Phillies that just won the World Series. Who carried them the entire playoffs offensively. It wasn’t Rollins, it wasn’t Howard and outside 1 or 2 games it wasn’t even Utley. It was Shane Victorino, Jason Werth, and Ruiz.
The mets don’t need stars at every position, they need some gritty young guys. I know that isn’t easy to get. But to say go get Manny, or Magglio or Holliday and trade your entire farm system to get 2 of those 3 is just a bad idea. If you want manny and his antics(i’d be for it with a 2 or 3 year contract) then that’s fine with me. But you don’t trade your whole farm system.
I’m in favor of spending 1.7 million on any man that will hit a homerun at least once in Philadelphia and dance into home plate.
Very good move Tatis is a good player and well Help the Mets next year, he was one of the most reliable players last year for the Mets before he got hurt!!!!!!! Glad to see him come back!!!!!! Go Mets !!!!!
Re-signing Tatis was a good idea. Especially at this price. He gave us equivalent production to Church last season. He came up with big hits. This is a guy who should be here. I don’t think the Mets should plan on using him as a starter. He’ll be a good role player on the bench. I’d consider allowing him to take some grounders at 2B this off-season to expand depth at that position in the off-season too.
We need YOUTH! Enough with the aging fossils. i can’t believe you guys are actually supportive of this.
This team will mire in mediocrity as long as Omar is the GM.
Why are so many people getting exercised about the signing of a bench player? This is the time when a team may sign its own FAs, so what else should Omar be doing? As for age, Tatis turns 34 in January; for the record, Beltran turns 32 in April. Is Fernando really a fossil? Sure, he could be a bust, but can anyone name a low-priced RH corner outfielder who won’t cost a draft pick?
