Ugh: Phillies win the World Series
By Matthew Cerrone - Oct 30, 2008 10:00 am

Congratulations to the Philadelphia Phillies organization for winning the World Series.  Forgive me if I do not extent a kind word to their fans, except for Phil Cordano.

Nevertheless, the Phillies did a great job building a winning team, they play hard, they’re tough, resilient and I have to think most baseball fans, not focused on Queens, are happy for them.

Frankly, I didn’t watch a single pitch of the entire six-game series.  Judging by the ratings, I was not alone.

I think the worst part of this entire thing is that, next season, not only will that pennant be waving in Citizens Bank Park, but the team will repeatedly be introduced as the World Champion Phillies – so get ready for 11 months of eye rolling.

Hopefully, the Mets use this as additional motivation.

By the way, if it wasn’t bad enough, not only did the Phillies win the World Series yesterday, but, on the same day, my wife booked a tour of Yankee Stadium with her family for this weekend and I have to go.

When is pitchers and catchers again?

yankee stadium is the most boring and plain ballpark in the major leagues.

    • chipdomains82 says:

Take off your Mets googles…for a second. It might not be the best looking park, but you can’t deny its history.

      • iamatwork says:

You mean all the history that was removed in 1974 and 1975 when they renovated the place and replaced all the walls and fences?

        • gomets6091 says:

          +1

        • chipdomains82 says:

Look, I’m a diehard Mets fan and I agree it’s a different ballpark staring in 1976. But there is still a lot of history there from the last 30 years.

        • iamatwork says:

Yeah like the place Steve Howe threw his final pitch before his 6th (7th?) suspension for cocaine.

There’s history in Chase Field, which, as Bank One Ballpark, saw Derek Jeter not get to a ball up the middle for the 19,851st time.

        • helicopter ben johnson says:

          hahaha

        • chipdomains82 says:

Look I’m a diehard Mets fan and was at the first game at Shea, the last game at Shea, and Game 5 1969, and Games 6-7 1986.

However, you can’t deny that the new Yankee Stadium has history in it. Reggie 3 HRs, Chambliss, 2 pefect games, etc.

I hate the Yankees, but I’m just being a realist here.

  2. chipdomains82 says:

I hope Beltran is not stupuid enough to declare the Mets the team to beat next year. It’s the Phillies, hands down.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

do you really think they will repeat next year….

      • exactly. nobody repeats. but still, we need to grow a pair and play some ball next year, despite the fact that we have a target on our backs.

        • ravi3 says:

I’m hoping that the Phils cashed in all their karma this season…One BIG red flag for them is Cole Hamels, who saw a 44 IP increase from ‘07-’08 (183.1 – 227.1) and that does not include the post season, in which he went another 35 IP. Factoring in the playoffs the last two years, his IP total went from 190 in ‘07 to 262.1, an increase of 72.1 IP.

As we all know the generally accepted increase in IP for a young pitcher should be about 30…

        • jimyager says:

Now that the Phillies got it out of there system they can fall back to the loosers they are. They only thing good I can say about that team is they back up the words with action and let the play on the field do all the talking. They said they where the team to beat and in 2007 got sweept away in round one and in 2008 won it all. Look at the Mets, in 2006 we lost in game 7 and in 2007 we collpased and again in 2008, ITS OVER!! stop the crap and play the game. Put on your game faces and WINNN!!!!!!! They have showed us all that they can roll over now its time to stand up and fight!!! Lets open CitiField with a WS. Use all the negative press of the other teams hatred of us and turn it around. LETS GO METS !!!!!

    • Ceetar says:

No. That’s stupid. He can say whatever he wants. We’re taking the attitude of ’screw you’, ‘ we don’t care if you hate us’

rollins made the statement pointlessly in ‘06. If the Mets hadn’t handed it to them…they probably woudln’t have won this year either. It’s amazing what one game can do.

    • rosemarymets says:

please leave carlos alone and stop talkin nice about crankee stadium…we are going to have a better ballpark than the yanks next year and……..i miss shea already…

  3. This would be fine if the Phillies won on the road and then their jet crashed on the way home, but apparently it is not to be.

I can still hope that a meteor hits their parade through the city of brotherly love. What a pile of donkey sh**.

  4. stilltheEWM says:

3 years of choking followed by this… thanks Omar and company!

  5. hotchipwillbreakyourlegs says:

congrats to the phils. Should be a fun 09 if the mets get a bullpen

    • Furioso says:

Yeah, then you won’t have the BP as an excuse for the next choke

      • helicopter ben johnson says:

        Philly Fan!!!!!!! Admit it!

      • jimyager says:

        Lets see the Phillies have the record for the most games lost for a franchise at over 10,000, they also have what 2 WS rings in the many many years of existance. Thats almsot as good as the Braves and they 13 trips to the playoffs and one ring :}

  6. Furioso says:

    “Additional motivation”

    So lets see

In addition to 3 chokes in a row, and the East Hating the Mets, now they need ADDITIONAL motivation?

When it get to that point, why bother? Just break the team down and start over.

    Build it right this time.

  7. Dirtysanchez says:

As a baseball fan-congrats to the phills for winning. Congrats to the rays for doing what they did this year.
As a met fan-This should have been us in 06. We all know the phillies overachieved this year and thats great(for them) they went all the way. I know this is not going to motivate the mets(idk what will) but we just need to focus on improving the team. I doubt the phills will repeat but they are our biggest competition in our division.

  8. djjoman says:

How do you run a baseball blog and not watch 1 pitch of the world series?

    • foul bunt strikeout says:

He was too busy watching the knick’s march to the title…

      1-0

      yahooooo

    • Ceetar says:

Because the Phillies aren’t a fun team to watch. The rays are, but the Phillies just were one of those teams that you always wondered how they got taht call, that pitch, hit that ball, and it’s frustrating because you know they’re not that good.

      • FlightFromHouston says:

they are that good… you can’t take anything away from them… they won and won and won some more… they are winners… we gotta face it.

        • Ceetar says:

screw that. I can pick a dozen holes in their team. Yeah, they succeeded. So did the ‘06 Cardinals, so did the ‘00 Yankees. Bad teams can win. They’re overrated for sure, and I would not be surprised for them to take it for granted and miss the playoffs by a mile next year. That bullpen was a one year thing.

        • jimyager says:

They won, wow. They played in the lowest rated WS in history against a team that has lost as many games as they did in there history. I did not watch any of it myself, I did want to see the Rays win because they have a low payroll and never won it. The Phillies stink, its simple. We beat them during the season and we lost the division because the Marlins enjoyed beating us more than we wanted to win. Add to that the Cubs not really playing good hard baseball and BAM, the Phillies win. They are not that good and they are not a likable team. They play dirty and wine like little girls.

      • LongJohnMaine says:

Pretty much my sentiments. This team did not even have to beat a top 3 team (Angels, Cubs, Red Sox) to win the World Series. Instead they face a Sheets-less Milwaukee team, a Joe-Torre managed LA team (some of the worst bullpen mgmt I have ever seen in my life) and a Rays team that probably overachieved and ran into some bad luck.

Billy Beane is right – once you get there, the playoffs are a crapshoot. Second time in three years the best team didn’t win. So forgive me if I don’t congratulate the Philth and their loser fans. Have fun in the NFC East cellar, chumps.

    • Alban says:

It’s the World Series! Even with the Phillies in it, how can you not watch?

For me, it was easy because I was pretty high on Tampa Bay entering the season, so it was exciting just to see them there.

But even when it was Cardinals-Tigers back in 06, and I was fuming angry… even then, I managed to watch a pitch. Maybe two. But that might have been it. It’s the World Series. And at the core of it all, we’re not just Mets fans, we’re baseball fans.

  9. mrBill aka DWright says:

OMG Ceetar! Right now the Phillies are not just good BUT, they are better than EVERY other baseball team. They are the WORLD CHAMPIONS.

    • LongJohnMaine says:

Whatever. They won 92 games in the regular season. Good team, not great. Definitely not the best team in baseball. Just the last team standing.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

Do you think the rookies were the best team in the NL last year?

      • FlightFromHouston says:

who was better than the rockies last year?

        • Dirtysanchez says:

          imo
          mets/phillies/atlanta/cubbies/milwake/arizona…
the rookies had a good few weeks at a very opportune time. I think there were other teams that are better but obviously did not execute when they needed too.

        • mrBill aka DWright says:

“I think there were other teams that are better but obviously did not execute when they needed too”.

Which is THE reason why the rockies were better than those teams. EXECUTION is the key word.

        • Dirtysanchez says:

so using that logic the marlins are better than the mets because they happened to execute in beating them on the last day so the phills can get in right?

        • mrBill aka DWright says:

YES! the marlins were better than the mets.

The mets needed to win ONE game to make it and DIDN’T. Clearly the were not the better team.

FYI, definition of world champions: BEST OF ALL TEAMS.

        • Dirtysanchez says:

i know the definition of world champions.

If you believe the marlins are better than the mets because due to the circumstances their last win coming on the last day of the season(granted most of it our doing) and the phillies snuck in even though (using parcells logic about a teams record justifying how good a team is) the mets went 88-74 and the marlins went 71-91(good for LAST PLACE fyi) then you are on your own. The marlins won a(ONE) game against the mets that knocked them out of first but according to you the marlins are a better team….

        • mrBill aka DWright says:

And according to you, the mets lost that game but they are still better than the marlins? PLEASE!

If the mets were better, why didn’t they win that game?

        • Dirtysanchez says:

Because they didnt execute that given day. Overall however yes i do believe the mets were a better team than the marlins…their records backs up my argument.

        • mrBill aka DWright says:

I just read your comment about being humble. Clearly your jealousy has blinded you of any common sense. Good luck!

        • Dirtysanchez says:

          lol jealously of what?
right a team that finishes in LAST PLACE is definatly better than a team that finished in SECOND PLACE…nice common sense arguement bill. I will accept your good luck..but frankly if this is your rational in thinking you obviously need it alot more than me.

  10. cousinrk says:

    Matt
I’ll give you 10 bucks to urinate on the monuments as you walk by

  11. Lidge=Mitch Williams says:

This team needs to grow a pair! or three or four! This needs to be the fuel! Four years in a row is unacceptable. Three years in a row is unacceptable and so forth! The time to win was in 06. That went out the window. Then two collapses in a two year span. Not acceptable! Grow some boys!

    • BuddyBrian says:

Lidge=Mitch Williams is so damn right on. The Mets did not deserve to be there this year. The Phillies were the better team and it freaking kills me to admit that. The only cure it to win G&d Da^&it.

    • jimyager says:

I agree, this team has caused the fans so much pain it has to end!! I can deal with 2006 because they had the best season I have ever seen, they should have won, but, I felt that they would pull it off in 2007 :} Like mopst fans and then again in 2008 so the honeymoon is over, WIN !!! If they dont win it all in 2009 they may loose some fans and it will be hard to get them back. Its time to stop talking ans start playing to win every game. The early season games as well as late season games. Just WIN WIN WIN !!!!!! It is getting very hard to be a Mets fan when they choke it away every year, they are worse than the Red SOx pre-2004

  12. seanmcsean says:

    Look at the silver lining.

The Phillies got an 80 year head start on the Mets, and just caught up to us now.

You can also say it took them 110 more years than the Florida Marlins to win 2 titles.

    I’m not impressed.

  13. fang680 says:

about 110 days to pitchers and catchers

  14. The Philly Phanatic says:

    @longjohn and ceder:

this is why the rest of baseball hates the mets and why teams like the Marlins exsist just to knock you out of the playoffs.

the Phillies ARE that good, certainly better than your sorry team. But you continue to degrade them and others and you think that the mets are better. By what possible standard are the Mets better than the Phils? there is none. it is settled, THE PHILLIES ARE JUST BETTER THAN THE METS. admit it. to any neutral observer there is no question. yet Mets fans continue to act as if the WS or the division title was theres and someone stole it from them. (kinda like a guy who drops a quarter through a storm drain and says the ocean stole it from him)
GET USED TO IT! THE PHILLIES are the BEST TEAM IN BASEBALL, and by far the BEST TEAM IN THE N.L. EAST!
just keep saying you got cheated and the mets are the best and then have fun when the Marlins and Braves help us win another title next year!

    • grotesmask says:

Didn’t we beat you more than any other team in BB this season?

I think that makes us better than you in head-to-head.

I give it up for Lidge. Guy’s insane!

    • LongJohnMaine says:

Why don’t you try reading you worthless mascot?

Where in my post did I say the Phillies aren’t better than the Mets? I said that they aren’t the best team in baseball. They are a 92 win team that got lucky and caught some bounces in the playoffs. It happens. You’re insane and/or amazingly homeristic if you think the Phillies are better team than the Angels, Red Sox or Cubs. You got lucky. You won’t be so lucky next year with a bullseye on your back.

And don’t talk to me about being hated. Philadelphia has the worst sports fans in America. Who throws a stinkbomb on the ice at a hockey game? Loser fans not worthy of any kind of a championship.

      • FlightFromHouston says:

man, that is bitter… have you seen the phillies play? I don’t care about what things look like on paper… those guys found ways to win when it mattered … unlike the Angels and Cubs … did you see their late-inning comeback in 4 out in LA… that said it all.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

Right..teams hate the mets because we think their teams arent that good and we are better……damn the mets for being the ONLY team in baseball that thinks that way…..

    • BuddyBrian says:

Go away Philly Phanatic. Don’t you guys have your own board? Why do you give a crap what we say about your team? At least we still stick in your craw:)

    • Pete_Rock says:

ok, this year , what was the record for the Phillies Vs. Mets, out of all series we played?….consider the fact that we lost our closer and a starting pitcher and our left fielder and Pedro broke down…..now imagine you would of lost your closer…or even his set up man….Pat burrell , and Blanton and then Moyer broke down after missing about 2 months …..

      • franksworld says:

Injuries are a poor excuse. Last year, the Phils lost Hamels, Utley, Howard and Myers (their closer) for parts of the season and still won the division. Every team has injuries.

  15. grotesmask says:

    Go Mets

  16. loqiel says:

The parade tomorrow starts at 20th and Market, goes past City Hall and down Broad Street and culminates at Citizens Bank Park. All are invited. :)

    • Ceetar says:

Let’s step this rivalry up a notch. Think we can get 5k Mets fans down there?

      • loqiel says:

I bet you could, but then you’d be as guilty as I am of devoting time and attention to a team that’s not your own ;) Then again, familiarity breeds contempt.

  17. KickedintheMetsiclesAgain says:

Hey, thank goodness for the Nats!!!!!

If not for them, the Mets would be the team with the longest drought since winning a World Series in the NL East

  18. KickedintheMetsiclesAgain says:

    Matt!!!!

Guess you really did not watch… there were only five games, not six!!! LOL

I watched at most a combined two innings.

Sorry, Law&Order reruns and the Knicks’ season opener were much more interesting.

  19. You_Thunk says:

*Holding box of tissues* Anybody here a Mets fan?

  20. dcmetsfan says:

Lets go Giants! Well, we need something to cheer about.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

      G MEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • seanmcsean says:

      Rangers are in first.

      • dcmetsfan says:

That’s right. They’re absolutely tearing it up.

The funny thing about all this is, as I was saying to a co-worker of mine who is a big Philly fan, is that while the Giants are on the verge of possibly repeating and the Phillies have just won the Series, each of us would like to change places. I love the G-Men, but I’m really more desperate for a Mets championship, and he and most Philly fans are much more crazy about the Eagles.

That said, if the Giants and Rangers win it all, I won’t be complaining.

      • iluvbuckner says:

        who?

  21. The Philly Phanatic says:

    @ longjohn
so by your definition, the mets must ‘ve got unlucky. REALLY unlucky.
two years in a row no less.
has nothing to do with talent and heart, just luck.
so you guys just keep waiting till your gutless bunch gets lucky.
    we’ll be enjoying the parade!

    • theNYmetz says:

Well most of you will, excluding the bunch of “fans” that will probably be on this site trying to rub it in Met fans’ faces.

If this is the satisfaction you get from your team winning, you have to take another look at what kind of fan you are. It really should be enough that your team won.

    • LongJohnMaine says:

In 2006 they were definitely unlucky. I maintain that the rainout killed the Mets in the NLCS. The last two years they deserved to not make the playoffs; they dug their own graves.

But don’t come on here and rub it in our faces and preach about how your team is the best in baseball. It’s not. I don’t care if you are World Champions. Your team won 92 games, faced a Sheets-less Brewers, a Joe Torre managed LA team, and the third best playoff team in the AL. You got lucky you didn’t have to face the top dogs. So cut the crap.

  22. mets2010 says:

i would rather the mets loose in game 7 of the WS vs the yankees on a scott schoenweis bases loaded HBP then have the phillies win, now they will gloat and think they are the best for a long time.

    • seanmcsean says:

“Long time” being until the next eagles game.

Philly is an Eagles town. There are a handful of real Phillies fans, but the majority of them are bored Eagles fans and bandwagon jumpers.

A few years ago you could get free Phillies tickets with boxes of hot dogs. No joke.

It is a very similar situation to Boston. There weren’t a lot of Pats fans around until they started winning in the late 90’s. Boston was a Sox town.

    • Furioso says:

      THEY ARE THE BEST

That’s what the point of a championship team is

      • LongJohnMaine says:

You are the worst poster on the site, by far. I don’t even post here that often and I can tell that.

      • theNYmetz says:

        Not necessarily..

This is a general rule, this is not a shot against the Phils, but it’s so difficult to tell who the best team in baseball is. The playoffs are too reliant on momentum. If a team gets unlucky and goes into a 2-3 game slump in the playoffs, they are done. The World Series winner is the hottest team in the playoffs.

Yes obviously this is open to argument, and yes you can include heart and mentality into this discussion, but say you play this postseason over 10 more times.. good chance the same team doesn’t win all or even a majority of the 10 unless they are actually that dominant.

      • Dirtysanchez says:

For this given year yes they are…..who knows what will be the case next year…it could be us furioso but im sure you wont be on board for that. Theres been a new ws champ every year since 2000, nobody..especially the phillies have a team built for a dynasty and total domination.

  23. Burn_Philly_Down says:

This guy i golf with always says I’d rather be lucky than good and i always thought it was the most idiotic thing i have ever heard…now i couldnt agree more. And anyone know where in Philly these rediculous umps were picked up off the street to call phillies games in October?

    • acc188 says:

*obviously didn’t see the called third strike swing>appeal/walk or Rollins HBP in the 9th. Maybe burnphillydown is as much of a baseball fan as the person who runs this site and just didn’t watch the World Series. Let me repeat that- DIDN’T WATCH THE WORLD SERIES!

      • loqiel says:

This is also not mentioning Moyer being robbed on the diving stop of the bunt which led to a blown lead, Selig waiting until the Rays tied the game to suspend it and making Cole pitch off of a mound that Bill Cosby would have proudly endorsed despite the obvious fact that Hamels was not able to grip his change-up nor keep his footing, the fact that the Rays got to pitch from a good mound for an inning more than the Phils, or that Selig could have easily robbed the Phils of any momentum they would have had.

    • franksworld says:

Calls were bad for both teams if you watched. Moyer’s amazing play missed by the ump (eventually led to a run for Rays), rollins hit by pitch not called( could have changed outcome of game 2). Etc, etc, etc.

  24. The Philly Phanatic says:

sure, there are no phillies fans in philadelphia, thats why we drew over 3 million this year.
in case you missed it, this city partied last night like new york hasnt since v-e day! and despite everyone’s projections of doom, there were no riots, just a city partying like crazy.
    shoulda been here!
we’re gonna do it again tomorrow!

  25. Burn_Philly_Down says:

And Furioso you are either the most confused individual I have ever seen in my life, or your are a complete loser.

    • LongJohnMaine says:

      He’s a closet Phillies fan.

    • mrBill aka DWright says:

Why is Furioso a loser? because he is a realistic met fan? it sounds more like you and a lot of fans here are the losers…. The SORE losers.

It is very simple: The Phillies are the world champions and the Mets are not. Which means in 2008 the phillies are better than the Mets and better than every other team whether you like it or not.

      • Furioso says:

No, the losers are the ones who have to really stretch to try to get any point against the Phils:

-2 championships in 110 years. Not impressed
        -Enjoy the NFC East cellar
        -You got lucky
-You’re not really the best team

Sorry, but people engaging in that stuff are the losers

      • dr. help says:

losers are chumps that sepnd their day on another team blog. your tuff guy/girl

  26. Burn_Philly_Down says:

New York parties harder on flag day buddy.

  27. The Philly Phanatic says:

dude, ive been in new york on nights the yankees and mets won the w.s. and i can tell you that the senior center at Century Villiage in West Palm Beach partied harder when the marlins won.
half the ppl on the street in manhattan have never even heard of the mets.

    • Burn_Philly_Down says:

Can i ask why your were in New York as a phillies fan on tthe eve of a Mets World Series win? Sound like someone is a liar? Or the most extreme bandwagoner i have ever come across

    • acc188 says:

This is true. Had to move up here for work last year and the majority of the people either don’t speak English or don’t pay attention to sports. They like plays and art- gay things like that.

    • shudderWINGS says:

When I finally see the Mets win a World Series (considering I was born in May of ‘86) I decided long ago that I would strip naked and paint myself blue and orange, running through the streets of my neighborhood.

  28. Burn_Philly_Down says:

Anyone know the population of Queens?

  29. Burn_Philly_Down says:

Wrong city for your art-gay things like that Mr. Brotherly love, and i didn’t know being homofobic came with a WS championship?

  30. Burn_Philly_Down says:

  31. The Philly Phanatic says:

dont forget archie and edith and meathead
    and satchmo
and patty duke…no that was brookly heights…

  32. The Philly Phanatic says:

not that i need to explain myself but im a native new yorker (just like governor rendell and my congresswoman) from rosedale.

I was working in manhattan the night the mets won in 86 and i had to tell the (australian) girl i worked with who the mets were. later while walking down 6th ave, i asked several ppl if they had heard the score and none had, most didnt even know what i was talking about.

Gotta say as a Phillies fan since birth, this is a great day for us, just like ‘86 was awesome for you guys. I have to admit, this blog wasn’t the first place I visited, but 12 hours in, it is somewhat fun to see what Mets fans say, since we have such a huge rivalry.

I feel personally, the ‘08 Mets overachieved based on the injuries and lack of your GM getting you a bullpen. If I’m being as impartial as possible, the Phillies were a better team this year, but the Mets were a better team last year. Without Delgado going crazy, you don’t have a lead in Sept. You didn’t melt down in ‘08 like ‘07, you just ran out of gas.

I think the impression some of us have, is that there was a lot of arrogance amongst some Mets fans about the Santana signing, as if the other teams may as well fold up and not play the season. Also, I think the rest of the NL East teams get up to play the Mets because of the HR dances and general cockiness of guys like Reyes and Tatis. Bottom line though, Phillies only got this far because they finally had a real bullpen. The game has come down to the last 3 innings, as Mets fans this year know only too well, I’m sure we’ll have great games and bust on each other again next year!

    • Pete_Rock says:

Oh right the austrailian girl..and remember the Mets came out in 1961, not like the phillies that have been around for well over a century…..beside i bet you she didnt know who the phillies were, or the rest of the league at that…

  33. KickedintheMetsiclesAgain says:

    Phillies won, congrats to them.

As for the Mets getting even next year, well to be honest, how much better can they do against the Phillies?

Mets were 11-7 against the Phillies over all, including winning 4 series, tieing one series and losing only one series. The Mets dominated the Phillies yet lost to them in the standings.

We already know how to own the Phillies. We need to learn how to beat the other teams.

  34. darkstar73 says:

I think it’s sad that you didn’t watch any of the world series Matt. That’s the problem with fans these days, people are no longer baseball fans, they’re just fans of a team and they don’t appreciate baseball for what it is. They’re more interested in player moves, the hot stove, free agents, trades, statistics, and the list goes on, and they’ve lost site of what it’s all about….which is baseball. As a fan of baseball, I don’t know how you don’t watch some of the world series.

  35. yagattabelieve says:

The Mets are the team to beat. The Phillies made the Playoffs because Billy Wagner went down.

    • You_Thunk says:

Pretty bold statement coming from a fan of a team that completely choked two years in a row. How did Beltran’s prediction work out this past year? Not too good, huh. How about J Roll’s? Well, being a World Championship winning shortstop speaks for itself.

    • rd says:

Believe- It’s one thing to be a met fan, but you gotta give it to the Phillies.. Be a man, and give them their props… They won the division, and beat every team that was put in front of them from the playoffs to the world series. The mets played soft and scared….. AGAIN!! Congrats to the Phillies and their fans…

    • loqiel says:

Letting Billy the Rat go and picking up his buddy Lights Out was one of the best things to happen to the Phillies. Hell, Wags was better for us on the Mets than he was here.

    • PhilsPhan25 says:

dude. we messed up billy wagner. I was actually happy when he came in the game.

  36. The Philly Phanatic says:

i gotta tell you that nobody in the city of Philadelphia didnt know that the Phillies won the world series, unless they were in a persisstent vegitative state (even then…), this was the craziest city-wide party i’ve ever seen.
actually, the night the mets won im sure it was a wild party in queens, i was just bummed that i was in manhattan and not there to watch. i heard a few stories from some friends in rockaway about that night!
but in manhattan? it was nothing.

    • KickedintheMetsiclesAgain says:

Thats because NY enjoys championships every few years, and sorry but true are somewhat jaded.

If New York had not won a championship in any sport in 25 years, Ithe city would probably react the same way.

  37. jaydh says:

I’m not impressed. I’m not impressed by a team who beat a collapsing Brewers team. I’m not impressed by a team who beat a Dodger team fueled by 1 player(i’m not impressed by any NLWest team). And I’m not impressed by a team that beat a mentally whiped Tampa team. It was an easy road to victory, congrats.

    • You_Thunk says:

      Your envy is overwhelming.

      • jaydh says:

even after a championship, i don’t know anyone that would envy anything philly.

        • loqiel says:

What’s that old saying.. “you play who’s in front of you?” Well, the Phils beat who was in front of them in the playoffs. Whether those teams had problems or not is not the Phillies’ problem. They were there to be beaten, and they beat them. I’ve never yet heard a championship team apologize for who they’ve played.

    • rd says:

Unfortunately all the teams you mentioned were in the playoffs while our team was back in their home countries, playing golf, or partying in night clubs…..

      • You_Thunk says:

Seriously. By making that comment you make your Mets team out to be even worse than those teams you claim are not any good.

  38. BringBackDykstra says:

I’m just still confused why all of these philly fans are coming on to this blog…and philly phanatic if you were working in ny in 86…you were at least 20 then…which was 22 years ago…which makes you at least 42….which makes it even worse that you are acting like a 5 year old going on this blog…just sad.

  39. metsfan1 says:

I can’t/won’t congratulate Philly. To think that we are so close to being better than them 2 years in a row only to lose out to their bullpen amazes me. I feel like a couple of right moves and we will be back in first. Being one who went to school in Philly, their fans now will shove it in everyone’s face (especially New Yorkers) as if they have been winning for years. That’s how they are. They always think they are better and have a major little brother complex.

    • Furioso says:

      Quit acting like a punk

      • MetsFan4Decades says:

I cannot believe as a Phillies fan you spend all your time on a Mets site. Truly pathetic.

If by some remote chance you really are a Mets fan then -whoa – you are the biggest sore loser I have ever come across in my 40 years of following baseball. You either are a kid whose biggest adversity in life up to this point has been watching your team lose – or an adult who needs therapy to learn how to deal with disappointments.

You need to get a life.

    • mrBill aka DWright says:

They always think they are better and have a major little brother complex.

metsfan1, they ARE better. They are the world champions.

  40. BringBackDykstra says:

the only thing that irks me more then the phillies fans coming on this site is my fellow mets fans who refuse to admit that the phillies were the better team. they whipped the 3 hottest teams in baseball. the mets blew it, the phillies didn’t, the phillies played better all season and when it mattered most, the mets absolutely didn’t. let the phillies fans have this they didn’t just beat the mets, they beat 3 teams on the way to the title and stop acting like an angry 3 year old with a tummy ache.

    • Furioso says:

PRAISE THE LORD ONE OF YOU AT LEAST GETS IT

After the last 3 years, this fan base should be both disgusted and humbled.

Too many of you are neither of these things.

      • LongJohnMaine says:

Shut up. Why should everyone bow down to the Phillies because they are World Champions? Ceetar gets it. THEY ARE NOT THAT GOOD. They are a heavily flawed team that got increditbly lucky with who they drew. If you can’t get that through your skull, you are a bigge rmoron that I initially suspected. Just because I am a Mets fan, doesn’t man I can’t criticize the heavily flawed Phillies team.

Oh, and I have plenty of non-Mets fans friends (Boston, LA, Cubs) who happen to agree with me – this Phillies team WAS NOT THAT GOOD. Now shut up with your stupidity.

        • Ceetar says:

The best GM in the world could try to pick a bullpen, and they wouldn’t get as lucky as the ‘08 Phils did. That’s all it really comes down to. Any “fight”, or lack of “collapse” they had, which they didn’t except for this Sept/Oct, could be attributed to them having a solid bullpen giving them time and confidence to fight back. Everytime the Mets fought back, the bullpen blew it again. that’s the difference, not some attitude here or there. If the season had ended a month later or a month earlier, the Phillies probably would’ve blown it.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Phils in 4th next year. Sooner or later that bullpen will drop, and they’ll overvalue it now. Enjoy it while it lasts, because they got their championship of the century out of the way, it’s the endless persuit of 20k losses now.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

i season record against the phills have us winning that fight. I will agree though the phills played better when they had to and executed when they had to. Im sure people can make a case that they were playing over their heads but so were many of the mets players in 06..the differance is the phillies got the job done and we didnt. Its a harsh reality but its the real one. I belive this team however is a couple of moves away from being a really good team. However as furioso has said and i agree this has to be a humbling experiance if anything.

  41. enjoy while it last phils says:

i want to congratulate the phillies but i hate the fans and philly fanatic you obviously dont know what you are talking about being half the people in Florida come from New York and when Mets play the Marlins the stadium is mostly Mets fans. Watch out for the Mets next year the FO has finally had enough and will get younger and better

  42. Burn_Philly_Down says:

I love when phillies fans make accounts that make them look like mets fans, that are congratulating the Phillies hahaha sorry but that makes me laugh really hard.

  43. Burn_Philly_Down says:

Im going to go into beerleaguer, change my name to Meet the Muts, and say “you know what guys the mets deserve some respect” haha give me a break please philly fans, your all pathetic for coming onto A METS BLOG LESS THAN 12 HOURS AFTER A WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP!!!! HYSTERICAL!

    • Furioso says:

Not as hysterical as being a Mets fan and trying to act like you’re acting.

Be humbled. This entire fan base should be humbled.

      • Burn_Philly_Down says:

Dude your on the WRONG blog, how many times do we have to say it. And you can humbly eat my sausage.

      • Dirtysanchez says:

i actually agree with furioso on this one…we should be more humble as a fan base…we made a big campaign saying “the time is now” in 06 and 07 but we did not win the ws either time. Yes we made great strides in the right direction but i agree this should be a humbling experiance…

        • mrBill aka DWright says:

so dirty, you became humble in 2 minutes?

        • Dirtysanchez says:

when was i not humble….when i won my arguement with you earlier. Has nothing to do with humility its just the facts.

        • mrBill aka DWright says:

Has nothing to do with humility its just the facts.

EXACTLY! and the FACT is that the Phillies are better than EVERY other team because their record shows they are the world champions.

You are what your records show.

A concept you seem to not understand.

        • Dirtysanchez says:

and a concept YOU seem to not understand is if you want to look at records..the mets have a winning record against the phills..overall yes the phills have a better record against the other teams that they played…what does that tell you…we won more games against the phillies but overall the phills won more games against other teams and thats what really counts.

        • mrBill aka DWright says:

we won more games against the phillies but overall the phills won more games against other teams and thats what really counts.

So, you agree with me then. The Phillies are better than the Mets. FINALLY!!!!!

        • Dirtysanchez says:

mr bill in the future i suggest you read all my posts before wasting your time on an issue that i already made my point…now i am going to repost something that i wrote earlier on in this thread that im sure you missed.
          “Comment by Dirtysanchez
          2008-10-30 11:49:12
For this given year yes they are…..who knows what will be the case next year…it could be us furioso but im sure you wont be on board for that. Theres been a new ws champ every year since 2000, nobody..especially the phillies have a team built for a dynasty and total domination.”

        • mrBill aka DWright says:

          a) I would die if I read all your posts.

          b) That is not the point you made in our discussion.

          c) If you wrote the post you just posted again, I don’t understand why you argued with me for so long and why you contradicted yourself.

          Oh well…..

        • Dirtysanchez says:

mr bill i dont see where i contradicted myself. I dont feel like reposting my answer as i have done so twice and it has been erased.

  44. Burn_Philly_Down says:

make that like thirteenish sorry i didn’t watch the LLWS last night, so i don’t know when it ended.

  45. enjoy while it last phils says:

your not talking to me right? I read this blog everyday just never made a account and Furioso u sound like the biggest idiot just go to a phillies blog and stfu

    • Furioso says:

Telling you, it is harder and harder to get upset with Mets losses knowing that people like you and “Burn Philly Down” are getting exactly the outcome you deserve.

I feel sorry for the few real fans on here – this is an absolutely horrible fan base that deserves to suffer.

  46. Burn_Philly_Down says:

Maybe you don’t attend Mets/Phils games so you don’t know the hatred between us, or maybe you could play for the mets they might need another carlos beltran type attitude.

  47. rd says:

But I am sick and tired of hearing how the American league is sooo much superior to the National league. We’ve won half of the last eight championships, and two of the last three!!

    • loqiel says:

I hear that. Jim Caple’s pick of the Rays sweeping the Phillies made my blood boil. The National League as a whole deserves more respect than that; I think the Dodgers and Mets could have beaten the Rays, or at the VERY least taken ONE game from them. They’re most likely basing this opinion from a meaningless scrimmage in the middle of summer. Don’t even give me that “this time it counts” propoganda either because the last five World Series didn’t even make it to a sixth game, rendering home field meaningless. Besides, any team that can’t hold their home field while taking a game on the road doesn’t deserve to win anything. Period.

  48. mrBill aka DWright says:

    enjoy while it last phils

….. They will enjoy for a full year. That is plenty of time.

  49. BringBackDykstra says:

even though the mets lost it for two straight years…the phillies still had to win it…as easy as it is to say if the mets won one more game, the obvious converse of that is…if only the phillies lost one more game…and they didn’t.

  50. BringBackDykstra says:

furioso, i normally hate your posts, but today you are spot on…the worst part is i don’t even know how or if it can be fixed. any mets fans with any pride today are just turning a blind eye to the situation.

  51. The Philly Phanatic says:

i come here because if i just drop a few nuggets in this blog and come back a few hours later, the mets fans (as always) will have turned on each other. and you’ve done it once again!
    c ya next year!

  52. jbg82 says:

    Philadelphia Phillies: 2008 WORLD CHAMPIONS!!!

I hope the Mets go out and spend $200M on Sabathia only to fail to win the division yet again. Mets fans – keep talking about how to solve the bullpen problems, what Delgado might do next year, and whether it was all Willie’s fault. This will distract you from the fact that the Mets and their ridiculous payroll can’t win a pennant while the Phillies just won a world championship with home-grown talent. I love it.

    Jo-se Jo-se Jo-se Jo-se.

    • BringBackDykstra says:

there is no argument to rebut yours…you won, we lost. but it still amazes me that you fans come here..i understand the joy you must have…but why do you feel the need to try and bring others down? you come here 5 minutes after they win, philly phanatic who is pushing 50 obviously doesn’t have a son or wife to celebrate with. roots is in college sitting in his room by himself. phillyfanonwallst has no friends to be with in a time of celebration. when (and, yes, if) the mets win it all, i know ill be on the phone with my dad drunk at a bar and banging my girlfriend..hopefully not all at once.

      • jbg82 says:

BringBackDysktra – Actually, I was at the game last night, so 5 minutes after they won I was going nuts, booing Selig, cheering Charlie, and taking in the glory. After that I spent a few hours high-fiving, chest-bumping and hugging strangers, like the rest of the city of Philadelphia. What a night. (I posted on MetsBlog approximately 12 hours later, after doing all of the things you mentioned in your post.)

        • BringBackDykstra says:

you still didn’t answer my question as to why you feel the need to come here…its a bit pathetic…

        • jbg82 says:

Oh, it’s because it annoys my (Mets fan) officemate at work, and I find this very amusing.

    • mrBill aka DWright says:

Hey Dirty and Ceetar, take a look at jgb82’s comment. It’s perfect for you two.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

last time i checked the last time philly won the pennant before this one was in 1993. The last time the mets won the pennant was 2000. Nice arguement jb.

  53. olerud5 says:

Big fan of the site and a first time poster. But I lost a little respect for you. How could you run a baseball blog and be on SNY talking baseball and not watch the World Series? The Mets lost a month ago…I watched as much as I could because I know there won’t be any baseball for 5 months.

  54. Burn_Philly_Down says:

    Furioso:
I want to make a point on how you exemplify the majority of phillies fans, on how you care more about the demise of the mets then about your own team. Your own announcer is even bitter towards us after handing you the division on a silver platter, lined with engravings of every person that pitched out of our bullpen this year. You seriously urk the crap out of me on how you come on this blog EVERY DAY and talk bad about our team. You have the audacity to call me a “fake” fan, and you spend probably 15% of your every day on this blog for a team that you hate, that I dont understand. The fan base that deserves to suffer is any one that you are a fan of you poor poor individual. I would gladly send you a donation to buy your phillies gear this offseason considering, well as the pattern shows you wont win another one until 2080. I really feel bad for you as a person.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

my friend i think it would just bode well for you to just ignore furioso in the future. Just my opinion

    • BringBackDykstra says:

he doesn’t hate the team. its been a rough 3 years, he’s tired of losing, and ya know what i don’t blame him.

      • Dirtysanchez says:

agreed dykstra….some of us take a more optimistic viewpoint of the team and hope for the future…some of us rather take a pessemistic view of the team. People handle there emotions in different ways.

      • Burn_Philly_Down says:

How does he not hate this team? What fan of any team would say, “I feel sorry for the few real fans on here – this is an absolutely horrible fan base that deserves to suffer.” This guy is clinically insane if he is a Mets fan, I tried to read into his posts and see if I could find anything that would show that he cared for this team and was unsuccessful. That is why i wrote that post.

        • Furioso says:

          Tell you what-

On a day where I’m absolutely disgusted because a team I hate won the WS (due in large part to the shortcomings of my team) I come here and I see idiots like you acting like you did, I see nitwits here who think that saying things like:

          “Enjoy the NFC East Cellar”
          or
“Your road to victory was laughably easy”

and you know what? Yeah, I do wish a big F-You to people like you.

You’re the same people who’ve been running around since 2006 acting like this franchise has won something, acting all big and bad and it’s tiring.

          Absolutely tiring.
          And infuriating.

You care less about the team than you do about being able to fight against the other fans.

        • LongJohnMaine says:

And a big F- you to you, you frigging jerk. You’re not a Mets fan. Go play in traffic.

        • Furioso says:

Coming from the guy who thought “Enjoy the NFC East Cellar” was some way to deflate a Phils fan over their championship, that’s laughable

You’re not a real fan. All you want to do is scrap with enemy fans

        • SadClownGoodMets says:

LongJohnMaine, you should take your own advice. The things you’ve said in this thread make you look like an absolute fool. Nothing but statements filled with jealousy and/or stupidity. You may as well stop watching baseball given some of the viewpoints you’ve expressed.

Not unless Omar wakes up, which I hope he does. There’s no reason for any team other than the Mets or the Phillies to see the top of the NL East for the next few years, provided sufficient moves by both GMs. There’s no reason for either of them to miss the playoffs. This could easily be the strongest division annually, and it would make both clubs better for it to be so.
