Buzz: Pat Burrell rejected Two-Year Offer
By Matthew Cerrone - Oct 31, 2008 1:18 pm

According to the Philadelphia Daily News, Pat Burrell turned down a two-year, $22 million offer to remain with the Phillies.

Burrell is eligible to be a free agent this off-season.

Last December, I wrote the following on MetsBlog.com:

a friend of MetsBlog, who i trust, recently bumped in to Phillies OF Pat Burrell while at dinner in Arizona…her table was introduced to him as a group of Mets fans…he was much nicer than she expected he would be…however, according to burrell, he would be open to playing for the Mets when they enter Citi Field in 2009…upon hearing this news, our friend stopped talking and refused to shake his hand as he walked away…

…i don’t blame her, though i am sure he said this in an effort to get a rise out of people he knows must despise him…

…the thing is, the Mets should consider signing burrell to a ten-year contract, while sticking him in the stands and forcing him to sell foam fingers…seriously, i don’t want him on the Mets, but i also don’t want him facing the Mets…

In his eight-year career, Burrell has 253 home runs, of which 16 percent are against the Mets, as are 104 of his 827 RBI.

That said, he drove in just two runs against the Mets in 2008.

one of the all time met killers…..no thanks…i wouldnt offer a bigger contract than the phillies did imo

  2. darkstar73 says:

this is an example of people taking sports way too seriously

    • HitTheSinkerBall says:

lol I am with you on that one

    • Xavier22 says:

Me too. I wouldn’t mind seeing Burrell in LF at CitiField next year. What’s the big deal? It’s not like he’s John Rocker.

      • darkstar73 says:

i’m not saying I want Burrell on my team, but someone refusing to shake his hand simply because he said he wouldn’t mind playing at Citifiield? He was probably just being nice and cordial, and that’s a bad thing now? Two things are evident here, people take sports way too seriously, AND, people take themselves way too seriously.

  3. therealsince86 says:

No way do I want Burrell. Does no one remember that the Phillies were close to cutting this guy he was so bad? Move on.

I posted this on the other thread but why is Milton Bradley’s name not getting more attention by Mets fans. He would be a perfect fit for this team in LF. And now that he is just a type B FA? That’s a nobrainer (just like him).

    • Ceetar says:

The Mets win one more game against the Phillies in ‘07 and Burrell gone would probably be one of the things that happened. (Besides them not winning anything, Rollins not winning MVP, Manuel getting fired, and no one thinking they were clutch or had ‘fight’) Don’t sign this guy, I hope the Phillies resign him, cause hes ucks.

    • Gina says:

From what I understand him resigning with the Rangers is considered pretty much a done deal. Which is probably part of the reason no one’s really talking about him.

    • Two-By-Four says:

Milton Bradley’s image and the value placed on image by the Wilpons preclude him from being signed by the Mets.

  4. Prismo says:

Why hate Burrell? He’s kind of a jerk, but there’s no reason to despise him like we despise Rollins.

    • HitTheSinkerBall says:

why is he a jerk? what has he done or said to be called that? jsut wondering I have not heard anything?

  5. zen says:

    i like: 100bb a year + power

    i don’t like: doesn’t hustle + reputation = bad guy

he’s not the gritty guy the mets need. if there are no other options a 2-year deal wouldn’t kill the mets.

i bet he gets a team to bite on 4 years $60 million (see sf giants)

    • jaydh says:

      plus he is horrible defensively.

    • therealsince86 says:

No way on the 4 year 60.
I would much rather have Bradley than Burrell.
Bradley is looking for a multiyear deal but has been injured in the past.
I have not seen any reports of what he wants contract wise. Anyone got any info?

      • zen says:

i don’t think bradley could handle the ny media. he’d knock someone out

        • rd says:

The following is from mlb fanhouse.com.. Sounds like Gary Keith and Ron better get in shape over the off season if the mets entertained signing Bradley.

“The Rangers had to station a cop out in front of the announcing booth after Bradley climbed four flights of stairs looking for the announcer. Precaution, maybe, but Milton Bradley, perhaps unfortunately, just will not get the benefit of the doubt from anyone until he gives them reason to.”

  6. Tidewater says:

Wait, the man said he’d be open to playing for the Mets and she stopped talking to him???? Even if she doesn’t want him on the team, isn’t always good to hear that players think the the Mets are a viable and interesting option?

    That is an odd reaction.

    • Nutz15 says:

      Stupidity.

      • HitTheSinkerBall says:

I don’t get it at all. If you don’t want to meet him why go over to his table? Then the guy is nice to you and you don’t shake his hand? That is pretty stuipd … and like a poster said above that is taking sports way to serious

  7. zen says:

    phils fans rioting goes wrong

    • HitTheSinkerBall says:

lol there team won the championchip and yet still thinking about the mets. I love the F%%% the Mets chant lol still can not move past us.

  8. gomets6091 says:

I’d take Burrell in a hearbeat. The guy hits for power, walks a ton, and “knows how to win” for those that believe in such a thing. Plus, maybe he’d become a Phillies killer.

    • 4JoeOrsulak says:

Exactly. He is beginning to look like a highly undervalued player. Grab him now.

      • Gina says:

I’m not sure a guy who turns down an 11 million per year contract is that undervalued. I’d like them to add Burrel but not for much more per year than that. And not for a very long-term contract.

  9. mittal says:

2 years 22 million? That is a pretty lowball offer for burrell. Last 3 years burrell is averaging 30 HR, 95 RBI and 100 BB’s per season. His OPS is consistently around .900. If manny is going to get anything around 4/70, than burrel will probably get 3/40 or something around there.

    • Simon says:

Well, his OPS is consistently in the high .800s, yeah. That’s a solid producer for a no glove no run DH type, but that’s not eye-popping. The league is always filled with Matt Stairs, Jack Cust type guys who would probably hit .250 with 30 homers and a bunch of walks if you gave them a starting job - you sign a Burrell because you want a 100% chance of that production.

I wouldn’t mind if the Mets paid that money - money is something we have, and as a franchise we’re just not good at dealing with risk. And Beltran can make up for some of Pat’s terrible range, I guess. But most teams outside of the New Yorks and Bostons won’t pay big money for that when they can just gamble on a Matt Stairs.

  10. stickguy says:

stay away from him. He has always been streaky, and the last few years it has gotten worse (months at a time, look at his august/spet. stats). Plus he is lousy in the field, has no wheels, and a history of physical problems (including a bad back).

plus he is 32 at least.

All giant red flags that he will not be aging gracefully! Think Alou, 10 years earlier and without the speed or D. Sign him for 3 years and it will not end well.

You want to talk empty numbers, it is probably this guy.

And for the guy that called him a winner, he is the longest tenured philly, so he has done a whole llot more losing then winning over the last 10 years! Even philly fans hate him.

    • loqiel says:

Burrell carried the Phils with Utley in the first half of the season before pulling an outright Houdini in the second half. He’s going to be another Aaron Rowand, in that someone is going to offer him a bunch of money for a lot of years and the Phillies are going to let him walk because he’s simply not worth it. He practically has “DH” stamped on his forehead due to his extreme lack of mobility.

Let me put it this way… do you want to pay upwards of $12M a year for someone who will hit three times a game due to having to be replaced for defense?

He’s a good DH, and a bad outfielder.

  11. Agees Catch says:

Burrell is 32. To the Carnival!

  12. nyj0126 says:

For what ever reason it is, the Mets figured out the Phillies this season. They went 11-7. They should have went 13-5 with the 7-0 lead and that 6-2 lead going into the ninth. Had both of those games been one, the Mets would have won the division. With that being said, they held Burrell is check much better this season. I don’t see Burrell returning to the Phillies. That offer was an insult. He’ll get more annually and he’ll get more years. Probably 4 years/50 million. I don’t consider him to be an option to the Mets though.

  13. nyj0126 says:

The Phillipes hit their peak and they’ll only come down from this point on. They know this whether they like it or not. Think about it. Look at what recent NL teams who’ve won it did. Only one team in the NL has won more than one world series since 1983 and that team (Florida Marlins) never won a division title.

2006 St. Louis Cardinals: No postseason appearance since.

2003 Florida Marlins: No Postseason appearance since.

2001 Arizona Diamondbacks: Made postseason in only 2 of 7 following seasons in a weak division.

1997 Florida Marlins: Only postseason appearance after was again in ‘03 when they won the WS.

Teams that have made the world series that have lost it don’t exactly have the best promise either.

    ‘98 Padres - Had 5 consecutive sub-.500 seasons after.
‘00 Mets - One postseason appearance since.
‘02 SF Giants - 1 postseason appearance since.
‘05 Astros - No Postseason since.
‘07 Rockies - Didn’t make postseason this season.

The only teams that were sucessful were the ‘99 Braves & ‘04 Cardinals. Once the Cardinals won it all though, they lost it all. Why?

    • Ceetar says:

The ‘98 Yankees were good, and they made it again. The ‘04 Red Sox were good, and they made it again, and won again not long after. The Angels in ‘02 were good, and have been back regularly.

The ‘06 Cards, ‘08 Phillies and many of those temas you mentioned just weren’t that good. You get a lot from a hot Sept/Oct

  14. tooth667 says:

can we pay him to retire?

  15. phillyhater says:

please Omar, I beg you, please dont sign him. I hate him for one simple fact, and that is because he is a Philly through and through.

    • bucknersankles says:

Old news. burrell turned down that deal a while ago. he’s going out on top.

  17. metz1 says:

mark my words if carlos delgado is not traded this year while he has some value the mets will suffer later.
