Oliver Perez filed for free agency yesterday, as did Damion Easley and Matt Wise, according to the Associated Press.
The early buzz from New York is that Perez
will initially seek a five-year deal worth more than $10 million per season, while eventually settling on a three– or four-year deal later in the off-season.
I suspect the Mets will make a reasonable offer, which Perez will not accept, and then the Mets will move on - as they should.
Perez was 10-7 with a 4.22 ERA last season.
He had a great stretch during July and most of August. Otherwise, he was all over the road, i.e., great start, bad start, good start, bad start, and so on, just as he had been the previous few seasons.
This off-season’s buzzword has to be ‘reliability,’
‘consistency,’ etc., and Perez is anything but that, which is why I bet the Mets do not work hard to retain him.
As for Easley, he has a fan in Jerry Manuel, and he has a strong presence in the clubhouse, from what I can gather, so I would not be surprised to see him return on a one-year deal.
Easley is a good baseball player, who knows his role. He struggled to hit from the bench this season, but did do well as a starter. However, the Mets need to move forward and cut bait with people, to move on from the last two seasons, and if it’s not from the bench and bullpen, where will those cuts be made?

So much for Ollie being part of Omar’s legacy.. Nady would still be under contract…
News flash: Nady isn’t that good.
Neither is Ollie.
Cameron > Nady > Perez
The Mets don’t need to “move on” they need to improve. What I mean by that is, it’s not about changing for the sake of changing. If the Mets determine that Easley is the best fit for the team, then they should try to bring him back, if not, let him go, This “move on” thing adds a layer psycho-babble that is unnecessary and has nothing to do with building a winning team.
How come you can’t have change for the sake of improving? Why is it either or?
You should have change for the sake of improving, that’s what I said. You shouldn’t have change for the sake of change.
I have a friend who says “there’s something missing from this team” and thinks Beltran lacks the winning spirit (he cites the Phillies post-Abreu as an example). I think that’s nuts. You can’t chase “chemistry” but you can chase performance and anticipated performance. To move on because “something isn’t working” is asking for trouble. To move on because “this guy isn’t performing” is smart.
Exactly.
I agree. The something that isn’t working is the pile of crappy players we’ve surrounded our stars with, not chemistry or gut or something.
I dunno — I really thought that even tho at the trade deadline it was a seller’s market and Omar did not want to overpay for a trade, I thought at the time he should have traded for an arm just for the sake of showing that he made an effort to change the direction the bullpen was headed (not to mention Wagner went down a week before, but I digress)… sometimes change helps. I think moving to a new stadium will improve their play, yet the mound is still 60 feet 6 inches from home plate.
I think what he is saying is that change is not always improvement. If they determine that Easley is the best option then you have to forget about the change part. Put the best team available on the field.
Easley is fine for the bench, however, I am not sure with the resigning of Tatis that Easley fits anymore. I also think, going to get flamed for this one, it’s time to trade Endy. I think we could even use him to get a #5 starter as a salary dump. Someone like Marquis from the Cubs or one of the Tigers guys. We have to find a LH pinch hitter that has some pop and can play OF. A lot also depends on what happens with Castillo. IF he is still around then he will most likely start. Thus Murphy becomes that guy.
I would at this point rather see
Tatis, Pagan, Castro, Evans, Murphy (Again, unfortunately as suming Castillo stays.) If he goes then you need a back up 2B and I guess Easley could work. I would be more likely to bring in a guy like Grudzy.
I agree that Endy and Easley can go. Although the 5 guys you list seriously lack MI back up! At least at SS, since Murphy could play 2B (where he should just be starting, praying here..)
Well did we really have one last season with Easley being the back up SS? I am sure Tatis could do just as well there. He has experience. If Jose is actually injured we would have to bring someone up anyway. How many games did Jose have off last season?
Trading Endy is not a bad idea, however, who do you replace him with? The bench will need a guy like Endy who has speed and plays great defense. Sorry to say but Pagan and Tatis don’t match up to endy for defense or speed.
I think a better replacement for Easley can be found on the market for cheap. Face it - Easley’s defense was bad last year, and his hitting was mediocre, and he’s in his mid 30’s.
The mid30’s thing does bother me as he is always injured at the end of the season.
The problem is still Castillo. If he stays then you have no need for Easley. IF he goes then you need a backup 2B. Again, I would much rather have Grudzy fill that role. That way if Murphy can’t handle it then you have a valid option at 2B.
Let cut Jeff Wilpon! He’s the most disliked Met anyhow right?
Also, when we upgrade at catcher (hopefully with Molina as a salary dump) trade Castro. I am tired of this guy too. He is a great hitter but is terrible on defense and ALWAYS injured. He has to be the softest catcher ever.
I agree completely, get him out of here, his disappearing acts in August and September have become pretty old combined with reports of his terrible work ethic. Im in favor of a trade for Molina, or even bring in a Michael Barrett type to platoon with Schneider.
Castro, Heilman, Schowenweis, Castillo should all be gone at the start of the season. You can probably get some value for the first 3, but regardless, Omar is going to have to take some lumps this offseason to get rid of these guys, i myself dont boo, but these 4 have definitely worn out there welcome in my opinion.
Agree completely. If you have to keep Heilman then I would let him compete for the #5 and try and get his value up during spring training. I never want to see him come out of the pen for the Mets again. Show is obvious as is Castillo.
agreed
I’d keep Endy because of how valuable he is defensively even with his anemic back. But yeah there’s no reason to bring Easley or Perez back, especially Easley.
But how often is Endy really used? Can we afford to have him on the bench as just a defensive guy when we desperately need a LH with pop? Yes he saves runs in the 9th sometimes but he limits the bench WAY too much. Do you really want to see Schnider as the LHPH?
We don’t always need pop. You can manage a game differently, as long as your non-pop guys aren’t looking to pop one in every situation. There are other ways to win. I like Endy, but Manuel obviously doesn’t. Despite him stepping in and batting around .300 when the outfield went down, Manuel barely used him the last two months of the season. Granted Murphy did well, and Evans had good spurts, and Tatis was playing well, but still, gotta get guys in there. So maybe you gotta let Endy go for a guy that fits with manuel better, since it seems we’re keeping him.
Other issues aside, Willie did an excellent job keeping his bench fresh and seemed to get the most out of them. I really feel our bench may have been the second biggest weakness for most of last year.
10 mil per for Ollie? Man what is Boras smoking? Some mid-market team is gonna snatch him up and realize what a Zito they pulled.
Wait that means Ollie and Zito are the same caliber pitcher. Sorry. Wow, I feel dirty.
10 million? He’s going to get more than that. Silva got 12 million. Ollie will get something like 4/46 you can bet on that.
sickening
I say offer Matt Wise 6 years 100 mil….hahah, matt who?
did someone above really criticize the ollie for nady trade? do you remember game 7 of the 06 nlcs….are you kidding me…and Ollie has been our 2nd or 3rd best starter of 07 & 08….what is wrong with you…seriously, what is wrong with you to make a comment like that, some people just dont have a clue.
Also why are we worrying about getting new catchers, our catchers did a pretty good job this year, schneider with the great defense, the razor hit when he was healthy, and we have to fill LF, 2B, 2 starters and a whole new pen, why worry about this position….so both catchers dont hit well enough to bat 5th, thats fine, we need an 8th hitter in this lineup, Church shoulkdnt bat higher than 7th meaning there needs to be a new LF & 2b who can hit 2nd and 6th, thats not an easy task, and taking focus away from that to find an old fat catcher doesnt make sense.
I have no probwith Endy if he is the 5th OF (aka Pagan aint coming back) but if he is the 4th again, we have a problem
And yes, Daniel Murphy while a nice surprise would be better suited to leave him in the minors this year, let him really learn a positon (either 1b or 2b) and bring him back in the 2nd half or next year….he DOES NOT have to be on thisteam, he was a bandage who played well, not a prospect who we were all waiting for to make the jump, he was a younger Tatis, now lets groom he to be even better, but that cant happen playing part time in the majors.
Easley is worthless. maybe a decent bench player but I say move on.
That contract seems very reasonable for Perez. I’m leaning towards wanting him to stay, however, I wonder if his inconsistency is a bigger problem than it appears. Bullpen never knows the story, even the offense doesn’t know what they’ll need. It’s a common theme that some of the best pitchers get low run support. Is this because offensively hitters are a little less pressured to get runs?
something tells me we all had the same comments last year.
We’ll miss you Crazy Ollie. Thanks for the good times!
Just make sure they offer arbitration so they get a draft pick back when he signs with someone else.
Yeah. We might get two picks, actually, unless the rules have changed in a way I’m not aware of. According to what I’ve read, Ollie will qualify as a “Type A” FA pursuant to the Elias ranking algorithm. That would ordinarily mean that we’d get the signing team’s #1 as well as a sandwich pick, no?
By the same token, Derek Lowe is also listed as a “Type A” FA, so if we were to sign him either before the arbitration offer deadline or after the Dodgers offered him arbitration, we’d lose a #1 as well.
oh man this is like 07 and 08 agen can we spend money on good pitchers and sum hitters god damn can sum1 get shairon martis from the nats please can sum1 sign k rod maybe orlando hudson come on can we 4get it bout perez and all these guys bring back nady also but come on omar make a change!
The team needs to get younger, and Easley’s age counts against him, as do his multiplying injuries. I like him, always have, but I wouldn’t sign him again. As for Perez, I hear what people are saying about the money, but unless I’m mistaken, he’s only 26, which means that even after a long-term contract, he’d still not be too old to pitch. That alone separates him from other free-agent starters. I wouldn’t be surprised if Atlanta or Philadelphia went after him, and though that’s not a good enough reason to have him back, think about how well he’s pitched against those two clubs.
As for Endy, his outfield defense notwithstanding, I’d trade him if he brought good value. I love him, but he slugged .only 330 this year, and the career number is .369. At what point is a singles hitter who can’t hit lefties the best fifth outfielder on the roster?
