Note: Phillies Fans are Obsessed with Mets
By Matthew Cerrone - Oct 31, 2008 2:53 pm

Damion Easley had the following to say today to MLB.com, when asked if Jose Reyes’s celebrations irritate the opposition:

“Jose has to be himself.  If that’s what he needs to do to get more out of himself, then he should do it… But there’s backlash to that.  He has to understand there’s a consequence to it.”

Speaking of Reyes, during today’s broadcast on Comcast SportsNet of the Phillies World Championship parade through Philadelphia, host Michael Barkann asked his co-host, Mitch Williams, “I wonder if Jose Reyes is watching,” continuing, “Do you have anything to say to Reyes.”

Williams responded by saying, “This is what happens when you shut up and play.”

…thanks to Jason Mollica for the quotes

…seriously, as a Mets fan, i don’t know if i am flattered or just disturbed by how obsessed the Phillies are with the Mets, such as this photo, which was sent in from Chris P, taken on the night the Phillies won

i mean, guys, you won…we should be making negative comments like this about you…not the other way around…jeezwhy is that city so desperate for new york’s approval…

11 wins out of 18 is hardly domination, especially when the mets faced kyle kendrick 3 times, adam eaton 3 times, and j.a. happ only once.

the phillies best 5 starters are hamels, myers, moyer, blanton, and happ. the mets faced kendrick 3 times and eaton 3 times.

thus, the mets saw the phillies 6-7 starters for a total of SIX games out of 18, while they faced the phillies ace, hamels, only twice out of 18.

on the other hand, the phillies faced the mets ace, santana, 5 times.

if these teams met in the playoffs the phillies would win more often than not, and mets fans know it. and youre bragging about an 11-7 margin? enjoy it, because if you told me that the mets would face the phils 6-7 starters in 33 percent of the phils-mets games, while the phils see santana 5 times and hamels only goes twice, i would have taken 7 wins out of 18 as a phillies fan.

but i guess thats too logical?

    • kingman 26 says:

Not all of us are bragging about this irrelevance…the 1988 Mets won 100 games in the regular season and beat the Dodgers 10 out of 11 games…then they beat us and won the World Series.

On the other hand, coming on to a non-playoff team’s main blog site to defend your team is not only pathetic and sad, but does in fact show the mindset of an apparently large contingent of you folks, who, like the guys on your championship team, apparently really cannot stop trying to prove you are better, even after beating us last year and winning it all this year.

I am sure the 1986 Mets mentioned the Cardinals and Astros and Red Sox and Yankees after winning it all…oops, I guess not…teams and fans who are secure in their own skins don’t behave like they are second best and won by accident, which sure is what the pathetic trolling—and comments by various Phils players and announcers—states in bold, loud, capital letters.

That, my friend, is the definition of sad and pathetic insecurity.

      • oldmanclemens says:

the only insecurity here is that someone logically pointed out why 11-7 doesnt matter, and you couldnt handle it.

trust me, by now, if i were insecure, i wouldnt be able to stick as a philly fan. the only people in philly who are truly “insecure” resort to rooting for the dallas cowboys and new jersey devils.

        • kingman 26 says:

Yes, your feeling the need to come on here and point out why 11–7 doesn’t matter—-which I agreed with entirely in my first paragraph—-is indeed precisely the type of sad insecurity which mysteriously infects the Phillies’ fans, players, and announcers.

        • oldmanclemens says:

all i did was read a post written about my team, so i added my two cents. metsblog is a good site, with intelligent fans. im not allowed to check it out as a phillies fan? dont write about the phillies if you dont want their fans posting reasonable, thought-out responses.

      • phillyhater says:

thank you, I couldnt have said it better myself

  2. phukthephills says:

sign garland, ibanez, cruz, lefty reliever, maybe extra cheap starter
trade for closer such as putz, sherrill, street, whoever

    reyes
    murph 2nd
    dwright
    delgado
    beltran
    ibanez
    church
    schnieder

    johan
    pelf
    garland
    maine
    niese/another starter through trade/free agent

    closer by trade
    cruz setup

this is reasonable…the rotation may be iffy, but this is cheap. garland is a good pitcher who imo is very underrated and remember maine when he was good…very effective..i would trust this rotation..not sure bout the 5 spot tho

    • joe the wanderer says:

i am not against getting Garland if the price is right.

Omar should consider putting Jason Vargas, if he is still here come spring training, in the bullpen as the long man.

if Chris Capuano is healthy and available in a trade, Omar should consider taking a look. that is if he is ready to pitch come spring training. he could be the number % starter.

i would love if Omar can try to get Jeff Francis from the Rockies or Homer Bailey from the Reds.

Joe Crede would look awesome in left field or at first base if the price is right.

i don’t want players like Bedard, Lowe, Manny, CC, Krod, Fuentes, Sheets, Abreu, Ibanez, Perez, and most of all Tex on this team. Omar’s focus should be on other low key players instead of these players.

i hope Omar use the rule 5 draft wisely, get the team a closer or an outfielder, who can hit 18 plus homers and drive in a lot of runs with a low batting average in the bottom of the lineup, from the draft.

  3. lightsout123 says:

i still cant believe they won. but i cant complain about the phillies being obsessed with ny because, i hated the fact that nygiant fans, when they won the championship, kinda forgot about the giants winning and celebrated that the patriots lost. ie. making shirts 18-1.

  4. joe the wanderer says:

i have enough of this phillie posting on metsblog.

the season is over, i want some hotstove coverage leading up to the gm meetings. can i get some nice rumors or trade proposal.

here is what the mets 2009 team mind set needs to be.

that is, it’s US against the other 29 MLB teams. no friendly exchange, no tap or slap on the bottoms, NO TIPPING YOUR CAP or praising a garbage pitcher or hitter. go out there and just find a way to win. i don’t want stupid responses like “team to beat or making the post season”. show the 29 MLB teams that you can win on the field. prove it on the field that you can win and not in the locker room in front of the cameras or radios.

do not focus on sticking it to one team like the phillies or marlins, instead focus on sticking it to the entire major league both nl and al.

the 2009 mets team need to become the New York Mets, that everyone in New York will cheer for till the very end. be the NY mets, the team that one either loves or hates, there is no middle ground.

  5. joe the wanderer says:

can the mets just release Burgos. i don’t want to hear anything about him and the mets in the same sentence anymore.

    • The Slider says:

With all due respect, deciding what to do with Burgos, is the least of our worries. Besides, I think the criminal justice system down there in the DR, or PR or Panama will make that decision for us.

The areas that we need to work on is, IMO:

      (1) Pitching (the starting rotation) - what to do with Ollie?; can we sign Derrick Lowe?; where do Niese and Parnell fit?

      (2) Pitching (the bullpen) - finding/signing or trading for a closer?; what to do with Heilman, Schoe, Fediciano, and Sanchez?; will we re-sign Ayala?

      (3) Catching - this web site has said that the Mets were not happy with the production, defense and leadership from this position. They have made this a priority.

      (4) Second Base - Will Omar be content to just to with Castillo/Easley/Reyes or will he look to dump Castillo and sign Orlando Hudson?

      (5) Left Field - We just resigned Fernando Tatis, who was excellent for us this past year, which leads me to believe that Omar is going to go with a Tatis/Murphy/Evans/Chaves committee. I can live with that, I guess. If we’re going to keep the left hand hitting Ryan Church in right, then there’s going to be a lot of pressure on Tatis, a right handed hitter, to produce.

With all this said, there’s the possibility that Omar might pull a rabbit out of his hat and make a bold move “out of the blue” for something that we never even considered.

But, you’re right, I’m tired of talking about he Phillies and prefer to concentrate on what WE are going to doing this off season.

We soundly beat the pants off the Phillies all year long. In head to head battle. We were the better team. Even with the worst bullpen in baseball. The year before, we beat us and we beat ourselves. My point is that we a little tweaking, we should be in a position next hear to win the Division.

We just have to go out and play the games.

      • loqiel says:

There’s no reason the Mets and Phillies shouldn’t both make the playoffs every year. The NL West is a joke. The Central is a one-team division. The East has easily two of the best four teams in the NL. Make it happen, Omar.

        • KickedintheMetsiclesAgain says:

With CC Sabathia and Sheets gone, I expect Milwaukee to fade for another 10 years at least.

  6. stickguy says:

Now that the parade (man, what a boondoggle that was, transportaion wise!) is over, the Phillie players have dispersed, and this topic can just go away.

Instead, we can have 20 posts a day disecting obscure BP trade candidates, and which 10 FAs to sign! Much better IMO.

I know they left. My daughter’s friend was at the philly airport this afternoon, and sent her a cell phone picture of shane victorino heading for a plane!

  7. Philnym31 says:

I really hope we give strong consideration to signing Junichi Tazawa. He’s only 22 years old and was easily the best prospect in the Japanese Draft. He decided to skip playing in his home country and come straight to the MLB, actually the first time in history that this circumstance took place. I know that velocity is not everything, but he tops out at 97 mph. There is no reason in the world why we should not sign this kid.

  8. wallybackman'sfire says:

I wouldn’t mind seeing Edgar Renteria playing @B for the Mets next year. I wonder if he’d be willing to shift to @B - and whether the Mets would pay $ for him? Only if Castillo can be ridded of I suppose. Actually I think I like Renteria better than Hudson for @B next year.

  9. metsfan1 says:

Phillies fans are obsessed with Mets fans because so many Mets fans get into Citizens Bank Ballpark and root for the Mets. They look 90 miles up the pike and see a team that outspends them and gets a lot of press. Now we will have a nice stadium that will generate even more revenue to make the gap even wider.

I would like to see the Mets keep their mouth shut (like the NYG) and just play. Philly fans have been notorious for talking about how great they are or will be with the addition of a free agent no matter what the sport. These Phillies had a bunch of blue collar bucket men players that performed in the clutch. Hey Omar, get my drift. How about laying off of the latin flavor so much and bring in some win at all cost players.

Anyway, I hate Philly fans but I have to give the Phillies credit.

    • rustyjr says:

mets fan did u feel the same way in 86 when we were also the most hated team in the mlb? the only difference was they wore their hearts on their sleeves and fought on field and off this team needs a sense of unity and awillingness to have each others backs

    • stickguy says:

BLue collar bucket men? Who? DId Richie Hebner come back out of the “grave” to play for them?

Utley is a surfer boy. Howard? Victorino? Rollins? Not a lotta blue collar in that bunch!

  10. Razor Shines says:

I am a die-hard Met fan and I don’t dislike the Phils. It’s so sad how much they want to be disliked. I saw Rollins bring up the Mets on the news during the parade. I honestly don’t understand their obsession — sure I want to beat the champions next year but the hatred runs in one direction, and it makes no sense as no one on our team taunts like Rollins does. Reyes celebrates a bit too much but it is genuine and about him and his teammates. Lo Duca and Milledge are gone. It’s a one way fight and frankly, I couldn’t care less and hope this is the last Phillies post unless it is about Burrell as a FA or trade talk.

  11. CitizenSnips says:

Are you actually going to some thoughtful and positive suggestions on how to make the team better or are you going to continually b*tch and moan because the only thing you ever get joy out of is proudly telling everyone how the Phillies have nothing to prove now?

  12. rustyjr says:

citizen why are you wasting your time and energy on these trolls? they are here to get a rise out of us leave em be and they will dissapear

  13. Tidewater says:

Why is it being a troll to admit that this year the Phils got the best of us? There is no solace in taking the season series.

  14. theNYmetz says:

    Word of advice..

You want people to start taking you seriously?
Start expressing your opinions in a more intellectual manner, and stop being so malevolent towards Met fans. You cannot expect people to actually give you a reasonable response if you keep on trying to belittle everyone on this site.

The fact that Phillie fans are on this blog is great. The personal attacks from both ends of this rivalry are getting old, and seriously why bother?

    More logic, less bickering.

  15. CitizenSnips says:

“You know what? I sorta have to because people like you refuse to acknowledge that fact, and you also refuse to admit that our team has proven nothing.

Like most Mets fans, you’re acting too big and bad in relation to how little the team has done

    WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?”

Ok. Give me one example where I said the Mets have proven something. I mean since I’m out there acting like this team is “big and bad” it shouldn’t be too hard, right?

  16. rustyjr says:

agreed citizen hey we kid but when some of the guys around here ( furi fiya flight et/al) continue to be obnoxious and cut and paste the same aruments it gets a lttle tedious to say the least - hey we are allowed to have differing opinions thats what distinguishes us from the herd but damn the total negativity sometimes man …
