Note: Phillies Fans are Obsessed with Mets
By Matthew Cerrone - Oct 31, 2008 2:53 pm

Damion Easley had the following to say today to MLB.com, when asked if Jose Reyes’s celebrations irritate the opposition:

“Jose has to be himself.  If that’s what he needs to do to get more out of himself, then he should do it… But there’s backlash to that.  He has to understand there’s a consequence to it.”

Speaking of Reyes, during today’s broadcast on Comcast SportsNet of the Phillies World Championship parade through Philadelphia, host Michael Barkann asked his co-host, Mitch Williams, “I wonder if Jose Reyes is watching,” continuing, “Do you have anything to say to Reyes.”

Williams responded by saying, “This is what happens when you shut up and play.”

…thanks to Jason Mollica for the quotes

…seriously, as a Mets fan, i don’t know if i am flattered or just disturbed by how obsessed the Phillies are with the Mets, such as this photo, which was sent in from Chris P, taken on the night the Phillies won

i mean, guys, you won…we should be making negative comments like this about you…not the other way around…jeezwhy is that city so desperate for new york’s approval…

    we can’t say anything.

  2. Dirtysanchez says:

good lord they need to grow up…..

    • Lidge=Mitch Williams says:

Agreed. Yes they are the champions. And yes we cannot say a thing…hell, most of us accepted this. But it seems like winning the WS is not enough for Philly! Honestly, enjoy it! Try to defend it! And if Philly hits a snide in 09, watch the posers depart CBP. It’s a little league field to begin with!

      • Hence my name for them:

        Williamsport Phillies.

        • Lidge=Mitch Williams says:

          HAHAHA! Posers, I tell you…Posers! Good one ‘09! :o)

        • phillygalfan says:

          - Nah… I think it’s the other way around - you guys are the obsessed party.. Quit worrying about what’s being said in philly and discuss your bullpen woes. Matt, there has to be something else noteworthy to write besides being jealous….

        • Beltranfan89 says:

Well that was quite an ascinine statement of you to add phillygalfan. Your saying that us mets fans are obsessed with the phillies, while “You” some how have the time of day to log onto a “New York Mets” blog to once again as a typical philly fan; bash new york as if you really believe your small town is as significant as New York. Why dont you go celebrate with the rest of your moronic peers, because i promise you, you wont have the opportunity to do so for qite some time in any sport. Well worry about Minya rebuilding our pen. I for one would never take or even have the time to go look at some rediculous propoganda that you hillbillies write about down in that godforsaken place you call home.

What a bunch of sad, sad little chumps you are.

        • franksworld says:

I don’t think anyone is arguing about which city is better. New York is a city of the world. But in terms of baseball, Philadelphia is on top. That’s just how it is.

        • phillygalfan says:

Exactly. I’m not a new york hater at all, like the city quite a bit, however, this blog seriously has to get over itself. This is the first time I’ve logged in since before the series started, and I think that the reason phillies players have commented on the mets at all during the celebration is because of the constant barrage of “I’m better than you” that’s come from the mets fans . And yes, you guys bested us in all of the meetings except 1, but we were clearly the better team. Get over it, your players have, and hopefully, a friendly rivalry will continue into next season with 2 great teams..

  3. FlightFromHouston says:

man, that pic is ridiculous … hey phillies fans, believe me, i’m dealing with it… i actually wanted you to beat the Rays and all their former bandwaggon jumping former Yankee fans who moved to florida … believe me, i’m dealing with it.

    • Razor Shines says:

I truly think the Phils are a little jealous, and hear me out…

As a Met fan I would be crushed if the Braves won the WS, much more so than the Phillies. It’s like the Rays vs the Red Sox to the Yankees in the coming years — although the Phillies have now been there a few years with the Mets, and not the Braves, the real rivalry is Braves-Mets. The Phillies are only our rival right now because they won, and because they seem to pick fights. It feels very much like Tampa picking fights with the Yanks and Sox in spring, trying to be one of the guys.

To me, the Phillies are more like Buddy from The Incredibles who wanted so badly to be part of it all. We just want to fight the Braves and this little team is getting in the way. Now they win and they are monologuing. Fly home Phillies. You are not our rivals and all the baiting in the world will not change it.

      • Xavier22 says:

I disagree. The Phillies are a much more natural rivalry for the Mets than the Braves. Geographically, Phillies vs. Mets has the potential to be the NL equivalent of the Yankees vs. Red Sox.

The Braves just didn’t beat the Mets for those 14 consecutive pennants, they beat all other teams in the NL East as well. Plus there was a long stretch during those 14 seasons where the Mets just flat out stunk. But now, I could care less about Atlanta or the Braves at this point.

The Phillies and the Mets are the two best teams in the NL East and if it remains that way, I see this rivalry staying around for a long long time.

        • Razor Shines says:

Your points as to why this should be a rivalry have merit, but you are looking solely at winning and who you beat as the reasons for a rivalry. Of course there are other teams the Braves beat. Of course there are times we stink, or they stink (now) — but with all things being EQUAL, they are more our rival. The Mets and Phils will never be Yanks-Sox because there is not enough history. Sure we can have a rivalry but not a deep rooted one that the Phils wish they had.

I’m a Jet fan, and I still consider the Dolphins a bigger rival than the Pats. Right now the Pats are the better team and it’s been a long time since Dolphins-Jets mattered, but that’s just how it feels.

        • Xavier22 says:

I’m not look solely and who you beat - In fact, my primary point is that Philadelphia and New York are natural rivals. Philadelphia (the city) hates New York (the city) probably more than Boston (the city) does. Because unlike Boston, Philadelphia has absolutely nothing going for it.

So the hatred Philly fans have for the Mets extends beyond the field and is a city rivalry as well. That never existed with Atlanta (other than a vague North vs. South kinda thing).

All history has to start somewhere. To me the city rival/geographic closeness adds an extra dimension to the rivarly that makes it much more authentic than anything the Mets had with the Braves.

        • JamesW6179 says:

“I’m a Jet fan, and I still consider the Dolphins a bigger rival than the Pats. Right now the Pats are the better team and it’s been a long time since Dolphins-Jets mattered, but that’s just how it feels.”

That’s because it’s what you grew up with. Trust me, the hate that the younger generation feels for the Pats burns like a thousand suns hotter than they do about the Dolphins. For them, the Dolphins are a bit of a joke.

The same goes with Atlanta; the 30 year old fans will always remember being kicked around by the Braves, but what Jimmy Rollins said in 2007 will always bother the younger Mets fans, even if the Phillies or Mets become irrelevant in the NL East.

        • Razor Shines says:

Exactly. You are only proving my case. This can BECOME a rivalry for the young fans as they grow up, but the Phillies are treating this like it’s a 30 year rivalry. That they haven’t won in 25 years should be more to celebrate than rubbing it in the faces of a team that only made the playoffs twice in the last decade. The Red Sox hadn’t won in 86 years but they had reason to bring up the Yankees. I just don’t understand why the Phils are bringing up the Mets at this point — it just seems they want to be like one of those teams that has a heated rival over the years that would at all trump a 25 yr drought.

I’ll tell you this — if the Mets won it all this year and the Phillies did not make the playoffs, there would not be much if any mention of them. Our immature fans would be mocking the Yankees. THAT’s my point — the Phillies are in a one way fight.

        • rustyjr says:

agreed i rememeber my first real rivalry was with the cubs in 84when i was 12 then was the cards until 86 then the pirates from 89-92 and the braves until 06 now the phils

  4. Giaco says:

only way to shut them up… win it all next yr… enough said

  5. Stems says:

I still dont like the term “World Champions” for any of our sports titles…

Japan won the WBC, Canada would prob beat us in Hockey, USA is no longer that dominant in basketball.. OK we may have a pretty tight grip on football…

    • Joe Bacci says:

Not a good analysis. MLB is the marquis league for baseball and includes players from other countries including Japan. WBC is for nation vs. nation.

Its like the World Cup vs. Champions Cup in soccer.

      • Exactly. Just look at the types of American players playing in Japan vs. the types of Japanese players playing here.

The American guys are usually scrubs. The Japanese guys are usually the best.

        • Stems says:

You guys are missing the point.

Japan won the WBC. They’re the World Champions. Just because MLB includes some international players, it does not make it an International League.

And the only reason only “scrubs” go to the Japan league is money. You think people will turn down multi-year multi-million dollars from Japan because of the competition? Oh and that non-japanese quota thing..

        • phillyhater says:

no country can compete with our country in baseball. Who cares if japan won the wbc. You think we had our best players out there? Not even close you dummy. That doesnt prove anything.

        • Stems says:

you obviously did not follow the WBC at all, dummy.

we had our BEST out there.

          do some research before posting.

      • lionson76 says:

Hey, we’re Americans, residents of the best nation in the world! The only super power! We can call our baseball champions whatever we damn well please and the rest of the world doesn’t even matter to us! Seriously, who cares about Korean baseball?

We’re also the only planet in our solar system with water and and an oxygen-rich atmosphere. That means our planet is definitely the marquis planet. So I think we should rename the World Series the Solar System Series.

But then again, we’ve got a marquis star at the center of our solar system and the coolest named planets, so we should really call the World Series the GALAXY Series.

Milky Way Champions has a nice ring to it, don’cha think?

        /sarcasm

  6. signupcall says:

    thank g-d for the gmen

    • mouserdz says:

Yep… and we all know Philadelphia fans would trade this WS championship for a superbow in one second.

      • gomets6091 says:

I don’t know what a superbow is, but they’d definitely trade it for a Super Bowl in a heartbeat.

        • Now they can cheer for their last place Eagles :-).

I gotta say though, Harry Kalas does do a terrific job on all of those Giants NFL Films Super Bowl videos. I didn’t see any Eagles ones at the store the other day. What happened? Musta been sold out.

  7. I think a good rivalry is fun. As ours with Philadelphia develops, however, we see a a bit of the psychotic.

It’s actually nice, if you think about it, to still be considered relevant in the World Series even when you don’t make the playoffs.

    • Razor Shines says:

      that’s a fantastic point.

    • Xavier22 says:

The reality is, with Wagner out for the second half of the season and Alou’s bat missing from the lineup for most of the season, the Mets were playing with one arm tied behind their collective backs. And they still dominated the Phillies 11-7 this season.

That’s why the Philly win doesn’t taste as sweet as it should to Phillies’ fans. They know they didn’t really win the NL East in a fair fight.

      • PhilsPhan25 says:

We both know your bullpen was terrible. It wouldnt have mattered if wagner was in there or not. Also it does taste as sweet, because our team was able to overcome injuries the past two years, when yours wasnt. It just shows we have a better club than you. The parade was great and one of the best days of my life!

      • franksworld says:

Everyone has injuries. Phils won the division in 07 after losing hamels, utley and myers for sometime down the stretch. Wagner is a fraud and Phils fans could tell you that from firsthand experience.

  8. mouserdz says:

Geez, it reminds me when the Red Sox finally won, and they still were chanting “Yankees S#ck” the night they won it all.

But this is more pathetic, we haven’t won anything! At least the Yankees have been rubbing all their championships in the sox faces for along long time

    • Razor Shines says:

see my point above about real rivalries. The Phillies are trying so hard to have one of their own.

      • JefJarrett says:

I see what you’re getting at but what makes a rivalry….really?

It’s not like the Braves/Mets were these hated rivals over the years like the Red Sox/Yankees are. The Mets and Braves battled for a division a few times, and the Braves knocked us out every time…….Chipper ran his mouth, and Rocker did his thing…….

Ok….fast forward to today. The Braves stink. The Phillies and Mets are battling for the championship. The Phillies beat us out 2 years in a row now, and they’re running their mouths.

        I see no difference.

It’s the Mets who went COMPLETELY over the top after their division title in 2006 and never finished the job. I think sometimes Mets fans get a feeling of entitlement or that something is owed to them….and I’m not quite sure where it is coming from. This team certainly doesn’t have a history of winning anything.

        • Xavier22 says:

And the Phillies do. Up until last Weds, they had won ONE World Series ring in 126 years of existence.

        • Xavier22 says:

First sentence should read: “And the Phillies do?”

        • JefJarrett says:

I’m just saying in general. Phillies fans have no room to talk - but can’t help but think Mets fans have plenty to do with this. Just listening to WFAN during the season and the callers that demand the Mets be given the same benefit of the doubt the Yankees be given……Up until this year, the Yanks consistently made the playoffs…even years people thought they were dead to rights. The Mets have made the playoffs consecutive years…….once. The team hasn’t earned anything other than the reputation for fading down the stretch when the games matter.

        • JefJarrett says:

And don’t get me wrong….I’m a die hard Mets fan……I want them to win in the worst way. But all of this is just silly.

Let the Phillies fans talk….who cares…they just won the world series……we have nothing at all to say about anything.

Who cares that the other teams get upset that the Mets dance…….I don’t. I do care that people here get so worked up about it. All i know is…..when it supposedly fires them up enough to kick our butts, and eliminate us then maybe it IS an issue if we can’t back it up.

Win…..thats the bottom line. Win and noone can day a darn thing.

        • x-nady says:

You hit the nail on the head regarding entitlement. I mean we went from fans that were just happy to be an above .500 team in 2005. Then in 2006 we exceeded everyone’s expectations. I was satisfied with winning the division. I mean it would have been great if Beltran came through and we went to the WS. But it represented progress. Therefore, I really couldn’t complain.

The problem with 2007 & 2008 aside from the obvious late season swoons was the ENORMOUS expectations the media and it’s fans heaped on this club when in reality it wasn’t warranted. It’s not like we have been going to the playoffs 10 years in a row and now nothing less than a WS title is unacceptable.

I just hope that we as fans can gain a little perspective. And look at getting back to the playoffs as our goal. Not even winning anything. Lets see progress. 2008 was NOT 2007. Injuries are part of the game. But Omar has to bear some of the blame for not adequately stocking the team with “Plan B & Plan C” options. He has a lot of work to do this off season. I look forward to next year at citi. All I am expecting and hope for is a step in the right direction. Go Mets.

    • olddad54 says:

Mets fans chant “Yankees S#ck” all the time. What’s your point?

  9. ravi3 says:

I mean I was annoyed for about an hour when the Phils won, but I’m over it…I don’t understand why these people are so obsessed with the Mets, instead of enjoying their victory. Frankly, if the Mets had won, I wouldn’t give a hoot about anything Philly.

  10. Stems says:

Williams responded by saying, “This is what happens when you shut up and play.”

    is that a joke???

NO ONE has a bigger mouth than Rollins! Hes prob thanking his lucky stars his teammates picked up the slack for his mouth! sheesh!

    • Gland says:

This is why i find it so absurd when people say “the phillies are in the mets’ heads”. it is so clearly the opposite.

    • dave27 says:

      Forget Rollins….MITCH WILLIAMS??!!

Forget Reyes…I wonder if Joe Carter was watching. I guess the mulletted wonder thinks he is off the hook now.

    • PhilsPhan25 says:

dude. he won mvp that year AND he backed it up with his OWN mouth that year.

  11. FlightFromHouston says:

Knicks vs Sixers tonight… oh yeah …

    • Joe Bacci says:

Hi, i’m a New York sports fan. Who are the Knicks?

      • kingman 26 says:

        LOL!

They are the second best basketball team in the New York metropolitan area for the last 7 or 8 years or so…..

        • gomets6091 says:

I was gonna make a joke about how there’s no way that the Knicks were better than some City college program, but then I remembered that St. John’s and the rest of the city schools are equally pathetic these days. What the heck happened to New York basketball?

        • DjDeF says:

That is an interesting point. Maybe if the Knicks are actually good that could help the recruiting for College in the NYC area. Just a thought

        • loqiel says:

Knicks get crushed by the Sixers.

  12. gomets6091 says:

    pathetic.

  13. metsfan3131 says:

someone should remind Mitch Williams of the game winning homerun he gave up to Joe Carter.

Maybe hes just mad because he couldnt “shut up and play” win a championship

I hope jerry has already started the “board of hate” for the mets to hang at citi field so that everytime they take the field they can have the us against the world mentality

    • JsyCtyFan7 says:

RIGHT ON. This is the kind of Mets fan I like.

None of this, “oooooh maybe we should be more low key so that they’ll like us” b.s. Seriously, the only people who need to grow a set faster than some of the players on this Mets team is the fan base.

  14. absentminded says:

No Mitch, that’s what happens when your closer goes 48-for-48 during the year.

    Joe Carter says hi.

    • johnstearns says:

Bingo. Lidge vs Wagner. If Phillies phans still want to rag on Billy Wagner, who is injured, that’s their business. Also, they will have to get on line behind all of us who were at the game he blew with the Yankees. Which by the way is probably more people than were Phillies phans three years ago.

      How old is Rollins, again?

  15. Seaver41 says:

Congratulations to the Phillies and their fans.
I tip my Mets cap to them.
They worked tirelessly for the last three years to get where they are and they richly deserve their ring.
They beat us like a government mule in ‘07 and last year in September when they came into our house when it mattered most, what’d we do? lose two out of three to them.
Is the Phillies fans’ “obsession” any more bizarre than ours with the Yankees?
The fans with the sign gives me an idea…
I hope late Tuesday night, events will work out so I can make up a sign that says, “Hey Republicans! You couldn’t steal this election! Barack Obama is President! Deal With It!”

  16. Joe Bacci says:

Its long past time for a brawl with this team. I want to see Pelfrey put a high hard one right into Victorino’s little league helmet. Something tells me he’s got the stones to do it too.

    • Reyes es el Rey says:

If Utley likes leaning over the plate so much and not attempting to avoid inside pitches, then I’m sure he won’t mind a heater in the back.

      Victorino would work too.

I’m not sure who would charge the mound on Pelfrey. That dude is huge.

  17. ae37jr says:

I think it’s more like Mets Bloggers obsessed with Philly. Seriously as of yesterday both teams are tied at zero-zero. Good for them they won the WS, let them enjoy it. Next year is a new season. No need to dwell on the past.

  18. nydre78 says:

So now Mitch Williams is loved again in Philly? Lame….

  19. mikepmets says:

I took one look at that picture and I immediately understood why Philadelphia has been voted ugliest city in America two years running.

Oh, and I guess Mitch Williams forgot all the horrible things that the same Phillie fans said about him after he hung his gopher ball to Joe Carter in 1993.

    • PhilsPhan25 says:

At least we all dont go around drinking fancy lataes and shopping all day

    • franksworld says:

Actually it was least attractive city out of only 25 other cities. Of course when you’re going up against Miami you’re not going to win that battle. Get your fact straight.

  20. So we’re essentially tied at 2 world series championships a piece… and that’s after giving the Phillies a head start of 59 years.

  21. yosi says:

It is kind of ridiculous that the Phillies (and their fans) can’t seem to just celebrate without saying something negative about the Mets. It should be about celebrating the accomplishment, not rubbing it other people’s faces. Its too bad when you care more about hating the opponent than loving your own team.

    • gomets6091 says:

It is kind of ridiculous that the ‘Red Sox’ (and their fans) can’t seem to just celebrate without saying something negative about the ‘Yankees’. It should be about celebrating the accomplishment, not rubbing it other people’s faces. Its too bad when you care more about hating the opponent than loving your own team.

::gasp:: Dear God, we’ve got something in common with Yankee fans!

d-bags to the north of us, d-bags to the south of us

      • HitTheSinkerBall says:

The Red Sox’s and the Yankees go back allot further then Mets Phillies. But you don’t here Red Sox players talking about the Yankees or Red Sox anoonceers taking stupid shots at the Yankees. There fans even not as much as the Phillies fans do.

I don’t care that they say stuff about the Mets I just think it is funny becasue if the Mets won the whole thing the Phillies would be the furthest thing from my mind.

    • freubr01 says:

This goes for all philly fans…in a poll they took more people voted that they would rather see the Cowboys go winless in a season than the eagles win the super bowl

  22. ravi3 says:

By the way..the best quote from the MLB.com article in the post was this one from Mike Pelfrey:

“Their fans enjoyed it,” Pelfrey said. “They should. We need to give our fans the same thing. Then everyone can hate us even more.”

    • Jaded1983 says:

      lol. Lets go Big Pelf!

    • yagattabelieve says:

Philly fans should enjoy it. 50 years from now they can tell their grand children about what it was like when the last time the Phillies won the WS. By then should have incurred their 20,000 loss.

This really angers me. Michael Barkann is related to me and he is saying this? This is insanity. The filthies should have been celebrating their World Series championship not putting down the Mets.

At least this off-season wont be boring.

We need someone to stand up on the Mets that can actually come through!

    LETS GO METS!!!!!!!

    • Bogar says:

How did the Phils parade broadcast fill 8 hours of coverage? By talking about everything.

How did jealous Mets fans fill the time? Waiting for a mention of their also-rans to obsess over? Guess so.

  26. DjDeF says:

I saw a video on Awful Announcing of the riots after they won the series. Seriously they started an F’ the Mets chant. I doubt we will be chanting anything about any other team if we win the World Series.

These idiots have such NY envy it is insane

    • johnstearns says:

  28. CitizenSnips says:

Boy they sure are loud and angry after the Mets have on vacation for, what, a month? Has ANY Met said anything bitter towards the Phillies since we didn’t make it into the playoffs? Someone should ask them why the Mets are relevant, especially since they had no effect on the outcome of the playoffs.

  29. gob15 says:

A co-worker, who was at the series, told me he read a sign that read “I heard David Wright Shot a 72 on Sunday.” Ouch. But whatever. This is a form of flattery. It’s a loser’s mentality that even in victory these fans can’t enjoy themselves.

  30. Philnym31 says:

Since when exactly has Jose Reyes ever said one word derogatory about the Phillies? “Shut up and play.” That is just such a ridiculous charge to make.

They have us getting Juan Cruz, Orlando Hudson, resign Oliver, and signing Bobby Abreu. I would love to see Hudson and Cruz in Mets unis, but I would hate the idea of Abreu. Granted he did have a decent year last year, he just isn’t the right fit for this team.

    • stickguy says:

Cruz yes. THe rest of them no. Hudson is a clas sic case of rep way bigger then production.

    • loqiel says:

Oh cmon, you know you want one more statistics guy with zero heart.

    • ravi3 says:

I dunno…If the Mets were to focus their resources totally on pitching/bullpen, then Abreu would in fact be a nice pick up for LF…Imagine him hitting behind Reyes!

Of course the Phils took off after dumping him, and the Yanks have gone nowhere with him, so who knows.

  32. BiffBenson says:

So what Mitch Williams is insinuating is we should have put Jose Reyes in the Bullpen?…or this is just an asinine statement from washed up big leaguer who is now doing color commentary on parades.

    • shudderWINGS says:

Correction: A washed up big leaguer who blew the Phillies LAST chance at becoming World Champions, who is now doing color commentary on parades.

  33. SweepTheLeg says:

i think that is awesome..the picture and everything..the mets dont make the playoffs but yet all the phillie fans AND players can think and talk about is the Mets..do you know why? bec they are ALL threatened by the mets..you dont talk about people that you dont fear..if the mets were nothing then the phills and their fans wouldnt talk…and by the way philly fans..nice ratings on the ws lol.

as far as people talkin about reyes and his actions..i think Reyes needs to get back to his 06 form, dance on the field, do whatever it is he wants to do..who cares if people get mad, and what kinds of consequences are there…other teams are gunna play harder angainst the mets..SO WHAT ..they should play at top of their game ALL THE TIME!!

    • shudderWINGS says:

It’s the same type of obsession that the Red Sox fans have with the Yankees and their fans. It’s unhealthy, borderline ridiculous, and annoying to know that somebody else out there cares that much about your team losing and rubbing it in your face when their team wins.

      The hell with them.

      • millsy says:

But the Red Sox obsession makes sense. They spent 86 years having their hearts broken by the Yankees, who won 26 championships b/w 1918 and 2004. And don’t forget the Babe Ruth trade.

The Philly obsession makes NO SENSE. We have never denied the Phillies anything and the Mets, as much as I love them, have never been a jugernaut.

    • chico says:

Agreed. If they are all out to get us anyway, then he should just start dancing on the dugout. Quit toning it back, let it out and have some fun with it and lets get some swagger going, because we honestly haven’t seen any of that for quite some time.

  34. Williams responded by saying, “This is what happens when you shut up and play.”

-Oh really Mitch? I thought what happens is you give up game winning, world series losing home runs.

  35. Kyle Vane says:

That’s what you call clubhouse material. Stick that on Johan’s locker, or Reyes’ locker.

    I hate the Phillies.

  36. My Favorite Baseball Squadron says:

Eh, this is nothing new with the Phillies managing to get digs in on the Mets after winning the WS. Remember Tug after they won in 80?

Fine, they won, their citywide championship drought is over.

Unless they run off a near dynasty over the next few years, and given that no NL team other than the Cards has even made it to the WS more than once this decade and the fact that their core players are older than our core players and adding on that their minor league system is among the least regarded in the league, I doubt we’re looking at a Phillies reign of terror.

So yes, us Mets fans will deal with it. We have for decades, something that a franchise with 10,000+ losses and only 2 WS titles in 125 years should understand very well.

But my question to the Phillies fans would be if they can deal with it when Burrell bolts for a big contract (that seems like it’s already in the works), when Howard takes them to arbitration and is awarded more money than the Phillies are willing to spend and eventually the same goes for Hamels, when Lidge doesn’t go perfect the regular season and playoffs.

Keep your heads up fellow Mets fans, try as they might they’re not going to be able to hold this one in our faces forever.

  37. Agees Catch says:

I hate everyone but the Mets. The Phillies are just pouring salt on an open wound. it bites, but if doesn’t kill us…

    One step at a time.
    next week gm meetings
    10 days until free agency
4 weeks until the winter meetings
3.5 months until pitchers and catchers

  38. Cactus says:

    Wait…

There are a dozen posts on this board about the Phillies and what they have to say about the Mets…some things that were even taken out of context and whined about…

and they’re obsessed with us? are you sure it isn’t the other way around?

  39. zen says:

ryan church on the phils win

“If that doesn’t light a fire under us, nothing will,” the Mets right fielder told MLB.com today.

    • but he hates being in NY.

      • CitizenSnips says:

According to someone who said there’s no way the Mets would get Santana without giving up Reyes.

        • Hahaha…there’s the reply I was looking for.

Maybe Church was talking about his future team after he demands a trade to get out of New York.

        • ravi3 says:

And someone that said David Wright has never had a clutch hit in his life, will never get any better, and that every team has a David Wright/

        • Every team has a 25 year old guy that hits .311, .325, and .302, 30, 100+RBI three straight years?

Francesa probably things Jeter is a better player than Wright.

Consider this. A terrific OBP for a leadoff hitter is .400. David Wright over the last three seasons has been at .381, .416, and .390. He and Reyes are the epitome of this franchise and if they were to trade one of these guys, we would enter the dark ages for a while.

Phillies fans should enjoy this taste of victory and keep destroying their city.

        • eligoodrich says:

          he is better

        • wrightstuff08 says:

…..and because the other teams hate them!
      …..and because the Phils won!

      ENOUGH.

When you need that much motivation, time to leave (or be sent away more likely)

      SHUT. UP. AND. PLAY.

  40. stickguy says:

I have lived in the philly area for 20 years. And yeah, they have an inferiority complex.

I did test my theory at work, and everyone admitted they would trade this WS title to the Mets for the Giants SB one from last year.

Tons of latent front runner fans coming out of the wood work.

Town does tend to have a negative, lsoer mentaility in general. Politics, city govt, etc.

As to the phils, fine, they won, enjoy it. it’s the fans that need to get over it!

Plus, real good chance they peaked and won’t stay as strong. And don’t be surprised if howard ends up traded in another year, since they won’t be able to afford him. And ownership is really cheap, and now that they have a title, aren’t likely to break the bank.

Besides, the park (seats about the same as citifiled) is going to be pretty well sold out. So don’t expect to see Manny and CC next year in Philly!

and the pen can’t do this good again. They just aren’t that good.

    • Are you kidding me? JC Romero is nasty. Madson has some undetectable HGH because I don’t ever remember the guy throwing 96. I don’t ever remember him being this dominant.

I want to win this division by 20 games next year. Put them to bed in July and we won’t have to hear the World Series Champions b.s. all year.

      • metsrbest says:

Brad Lidge WILL blow a save next year. Ryan Madson might revert back to being the up and down pitcher he was. Romero is capable of being stinky. Scott Eyre has been a journeyman the past few years. Remember when Aaron Heilman was good? Duaner Sanchez was great? The bullpen from year to year is a crapshoot.

  41. stickguy says:

if it helps, the rest of the country doesn’t care about them either. TV ratings lowest ever, and by a lot!

  42. sethman says:

Jeez, what a sad end to a disappointing season. I can’t believe the Phillies are the best that MLB had to offer. I don’t actually hate the Phillies — I hate the Brewers, Dodgers, and Rays!

  43. metsrbest says:

I don’t care about the picture. It really means nothing. Their fans deserve to make fun of us, rip into us and we have no other choice but to take it. There are enough Met fans who would do the same. But when you have morons who are supposed to be professionals, make comments like Mitch Williams, Harry Kalas, and Larry Anderson…those are the guys who should just shut their traps.

  44. Furioso says:

“Just Shut Up And Play” should be the f**king slogan for this season for all the Mets…..and their fans.

This team isn’t nearly as humbled as they should be.

OMG Rollins is now bashing the Mets and Johan…hahaha this is priseless!

    • Sylar says:

      What did he say?

      • Burn_Philly_Down says:

Something like “Yo dogg we are the team to beat, and the Mets need to see that money doesn’t buy rings, and someguy named Johan Santana didn’t do anything for them”, and of couse we heard new york S**** hahaha trashhhhhhhhhhhh!

        • ASod1975 says:

Did he really say that? Because every time I watched Johan Santana pitch against the Phillies, he pitched like an ace. Wasn’t his fault a deplorable bullpen cost him a 20-win season and a surefire Cy Young Award. Rollins is dumber than I thought if he actually threw Santana into the mix. Single out any Met you want, but without Santana, the Mets struggle to finish .500….

        • MrDudeAndStuff says:

No, he said something that he is a good pitcher, but it take smore then one player to win a championship. It takes a whole team.

        • ASod1975 says:

OK…that makes more sense. Thanks for clearing that up…..Because the other statement was awful brash, even for Rollins.

        • Burn_Philly_Down says:

What I was watching was Rollins saying that some guy named Johan Santana isnt going to get you here thats how i took what he said. Maybe I’m just really angry?

        • loqiel says:

Rollins said “you need more than one player to win a championship, you need a team” and he had mentioned Santana.

        • Bogar says:

Phils had to spend the entire spring and summer talking about the Mets and Santana, so a nod in that direction in October is all that trade has brought the Mets so far in the postseason.

  49. landyg21 says:

Are they mad that they had the losest watched world series since the last time they were in it again Toronto. I believe it’s jealousy. Our stadium is bigger, we have more fans, we have more stars, and the Mets get more of the rock star treatment. It’s not our fault we wouldn’t recognize Carlos Ruiz from a person on a soccer field. Or do Philly fans really wish they had Jose Reyes? Whatever it is, get over it. Hello, you guys just finished winning a championship.

If your a Mets fans, just learn from these playoffs and see that your STARS don’t have to play top notch baseball. Victorino, Worth, Feliz, Romero, and Madsen won this championship for Philadelphia. The only 2 that performed and were believed to excel were Hamels and Lidge.

    Rollins: NLDS .375 NLCS .143 WS .227
    Utley: NLDS .133 NLCS . 353 WS.167
    Howard NLDS .182 NLCS .300 WS.286

  52. SantanaCYYOung says:

They talk about the Mets cause they know that if the other teams in the east played against them the way they do against us they would have never made the playoffs.

the mets need to win and that’ll take care of everything. but ALOT of work needs to be done for that to happen

    • ASod1975 says:

Yeah…See Braves, Atlanta and Nationals, Washington especially (throw the Marlins into the mix for the final series but the Mets actually played pretty well against them throughout the year)…..

  53. Good for the Phillies they finally have the same number of World Series titles as the Mets, and it only took them 125 years.

  54. CitizenSnips says:

Why isn’t Furioso banned? He brings nothing but negativity here.

  55. Darth Manuel says:

Next season is gonna be brutal. Two consecutive collapses then our biggest rival that put us in the record books wins the World Series.. Thats harsh..

  56. BullpenHelp says:

Sorry, but we’re proving time and time again that the obsession is mutual.

Why are we seeing post after post about the Phils being obsessed with the Mets? And then there’s more than a hundred comments about how the Phils are jealous of the Mets (which is hard to understand).

If we didn’t care, we wouldn’t continue to write about it. It’s clear the obsession runs both ways. Denying it is stupid. There’s been more talk on this site about the Phils than about any team other than the Mets. It’s a rivalry. They’ve got a leg up now. The only way to shut them up is to win the World Series.

If we weren’t obsessed, we’d be ignoring them. We’re not.

    • ASod1975 says:

Guilty….Now go out and kick their arses next season!!!!

      • CitizenSnips says:

We technically did. They just beat all the other teams slightly more than we did.

        • ASod1975 says:

True, Mets beat them 11 out of 18 games and it could have been better if not for the always reliable Mets’ pen. The Shea implosion in the opener of a midseason series…blowing a 7-0 lead in August (although much of that was attained against Donedro Martinez). Bullpen, bullpen, bullpen…chant it like a mantra. I read today on mlbtraderumors.com that the Mets made a play for Lidge last year but the Astros wanted Carlos Gomez or Fernando Martinez and another prospect. Instead, the Phillies get him for an already chewed piece of gum and an expired carton of milk (Michael Bourn and Geoff Geary)……

    • gomets6091 says:

the difference is they just won the World Series while we’ve been sitting home for a month focusing on football. We SHOULD be worrying about the Phillies. It’s kinda pathetic for them to be worrying about us right now.

When the Giants won the Super Bowl, the Eagles and Cowboys were #7,598 and 7,599 on the list of things I was concerned about.

  57. Burn_Philly_Down says:

  59. the_other_matt says:

Let them talk. After all, it took them over 100 years to win 2 WS titles.

      • gomets6091 says:

I hate the Phillies as much as anyone, but to be fair, you can’t really count the first 20 years of that, considering there was no such thing as a World Series for them to win. Technically they’ve won 2 World Series in 105 years. Give them SOME credit.

Of course, they didn’t win any pennants in those first 20 years, so that’s not much better…

  60. steadyeddie says:

Spoke to a friend on the phone; she says her two sons just got back from the “parade”. Everbody was drunk and obnoxious and the smell and results of “smoke” were everywhere. They are Philly fans and they were disgusted! An entire city stuck in 11 grade mentality…wow…

    • shudderWINGS says:

I wish something like that would happen if the Mets won the World Series.

Instead, half of New York would wander around saying “Who won the Super Bowl?”

    • johnstearns says:

Wait, why is that bad again?

I actually like Philadelphia. Cute little city. Noisy, dirty, good food, tons of small businesses, real culture (i.e. musicians, artists and writers can still almost afford to live there), like New York used to be, except for the little part.

The fans, eh, what are you going to do. Fans everywhere stink. I sat behind a meth-head at the NLCS game Trachsel blew in St. Louis. Every time Reyes was up he called for the DR to be nuked. Every time Belliard was up he shouted out “Base Rap!” I mean, there are freaky freaks everywhere, we’re a country of cast-offs and genetic odds and ends.

Granted, Mets fans seem more lovable than that to me, but that may have been a function of Shea — lots of cheap seats, lots of families, kids, people just learning about the game, funny hecklers. Citi’s going to change that. Here’s hoping all these changes everyone is talking about turn out ok.

If you don’t like people and their weird overinvestments in lots of things that have nothing to do with them, why are you watching baseball? Stats? The physics?

Congratulations to the Phillies and their perfect closer.

  61. kd bart says:

Just saw highlights of the parade on ESPN and Rollins was talking about Santana and the Mets from the podium. You just won the WS and you’re still concentrating on and talking about the Mets? Are you that insecure as a player, team and city that you can’t go 24 hours without mentioning the Mets?

    • ASod1975 says:

If this doesn’t get the Mets’ blood boiling, I don’t know what will. I know if I was a pitcher, I’d be going up and in on these punks, I don’t care what commissioner Bud Selig (responsible for the true wussification of the sport) thought about it. I think Pelf will nail Rollins in the ribs next year and while he’s at it, dust Victorino off as well. Don’t throw at the head (I could never advocate that) but they’ve got to start fighting back. If all the teams out there hate them, give them a reason to hate…Gotta have the us vs. them mentality, it worked in 1986!

    • CitizenSnips says:

      How completely clas.sless.

And Matt, please please please please change the comment filter, or at least put up a list of banned words. It’s really bad that people can’t use regular words because “swears” are embedded in them.

      • phillyhater says:

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU…it is very ridiculous. I sat for an hour last night trying to figure out why my comment wouldnt get posted. And i never did figure it out. there were no swear words in it at all.

is what the title of this blog entry should be

  66. LGNYM says:

HAHAHA the Phillies “shutup and play”???? Ok they got the playing part down, but with the world’s biggest media whore (ok maybe second biggest after Schilling) on their team they certainly don’t have the “shutup” part down (Rollins didn’t really have the play part down either this yr).

Whatever they won, they deserve credit for that. But it is funny/pathetic, that they are STILL talking about the Mets when our season ended over a month ago. I can understand some gloating if they faced us in the NLCS, but we’ve been irrelevant for a month now. I certainly wasn’t thinking about the Phillies or the Braves, when the Mets were in the playoffs and those teams weren’t. And when the Mets do finally win a damn WS, I’ll be celebrating their win, not wondering what opposing fans and players are doing.

  67. cousinrk says:

What do you expect from the losingest franchise in professional sports and a town that never wins? They don’t have a clue how to act when they win and hopefully this is a one year wonder and Philly goes back to being LOSERTOWN USA. Stop worrying about the Mets, your team won, you are the better team. Enjoy it, but they are Philly so pettiness and anger comes with the territory even when they win.

And Mitch Wiliams should stop trying to ride on the coattails of this team, don’t think all baseball fans haven’t forgotten your pitch to Joe Carter in the 93 World Series. Once a loser always a loser

    • millsy says:

Sad but true. They are the city that booed Mike Schmidt on his induction into the Hall of Fame and needs a court and jail in the basement of Lincoln Field for the drunk, rowdy out of control fans at Eagles.

But I guess in your book wanting to actually stick to the truth and facts is having major issues.

        • wrightstuff08 says:

Mr Dude, the problem Mets fans have with Philly is, the Philly players continually have to make comments about the Mets players even after winning the WS. Rollins is a loser and didnt back up any words this year but yet still takes shots at the Mets. Some of the Philly players have huge jealousy issues and it is shining through everytime they open their mouths. Also, the truth is Rollins fired the first shot in this verbal battle last year when he declared the Phillies the team to beat. Just shut to hell up and play ball!!

      • PhilsPhan25 says:

      • loqiel says:

Uh, no one booed Schmidt on his induction. Show me where you find that.

  68. millsy says:

This obsession the Phillies have with the Mets is just plain weird. I got the Red Sox obsession with the Yankees - they spent the better part of 86 yrs getting their hearts crushed by the Yankees as their rival went on to win 26 championships in that period. Their obsession and relief in 2004 made complete and total sense. Imagine our beating the Braves to get to the Series and winning it all and multiply in 10 times. That’s how the Red Sox must have felt in 2004.

I am diehard Mets fan and we have a lot more bad seasons than good ones. What exactly have we denied the Phillies? Nothing that I am aware of. In fact, we have had our hearts broken by the Phillies two years in a row and yet they win a WS and all they can talk about is Reyes, Santana and the Mets. Weird!

I am going to play pop psychologist - I am a native NYer but I lived elsewhere before returning about 7 yrs ago. There is the fascination-envy of NY in many parts of the country. You don’t see it in places that are destinations - LA, SF, DC, etc. However, in cities that don’t feel they get the respect they deserve people have this obsession-hatred of NY. That is the only reason I can see why they keep talking about the Mets because they beat us. Why else would they care?

    • gomets6091 says:

I live in DC and they have it here too, trust me.

      • millsy says:

I live in DC for over a decade and while there is some anti-NY stuff, it is nothing like the other places I have lived. My personal experience is that cities have something really big about them - DC is the Capitol, LA has showbiz, SF has the tech biz - tend to not be nearly as jealous of NY as other cities.

When you go to prison someday Furi, I hope you use that slogan, and then you’ll see what it gets you.

  70. Furioso says:

If only our players were as tired of this as we are

  71. bucknersankles says:

IT’S TIME THE METS FRONT OFFICE TAKE THIS BREWING RIVALRY TO THE NEXT LEVEL AND GO AFTER MANNY RAMIREZ WITH A VENGENCE, LET’S FIX THAT ALBATROSE OF A BP AND GO GET THIS GUY, HE IS ALREADY CONSIDERED BY MANY THE GREATEST RIGHT HANDED HITTER IN HISTORY ( HIS NUMBERS SUPPORT THIS ACHOLADE) HE IS THE PREMIER RBI MAN OF THIS GENERATION, HE WILL HIT IN THE CLUTCH,UNDER PRESSURE, FOR POWER AND AVG AND HE WON’T TAKE NO CRAP FROM ANYBODY ESPECIALLY FROM THE LIKES OF THE PHILLIES. WITH MANNY IN OUR LINE UP I PROMISE YOU WE GO DEEP INTO OCT FOR THE NEXT 3 -4 YRS AND THAT ALONE WILL MAKE PICKING UP HIS TAB WELL WORTH IT.

  72. Philly Fan on Wall St. says:

Yes…PLEEEASE……please get Manny. Load up on more free agents…pleease. Its worked so well for you Mutts for the past 4 years…please get Manny…..you’ll definitely get to the WS then…..lol

I thought thats what Santana was for…..

    Choke much, Mutts fans???

    • CitizenSnips says:

I find it hilarious that you’re echoing the words of a man who called you guys frontrunners.

    • gomets6091 says:

I love this whole “getting big name players hasn’t worked for you” thing. Right, except the time we got Beltran, Delgado, Wagner & Pedro and won 97 games, running away with the NL East and getting an out away from the World Series.

The big name players haven’t been the problem, the craptastic bullpen has been the problem the last 2 years. I’m not saying we should sign Manny, but I would make that Santana trade a million times over. Not his fault we didn’t make the playoffs this year.

    • johnstearns says:

Hey, sorry about Wall Street. Good thing you have that philly fan gig to fall back on.

    • Gland says:

Mets fans didn’t choke. We actually root for our team all year, unlike the frontrunners in Philly.

  73. bucknersankles says:

CORRECTION ON MY PREVIOUS BLOG, THE PHILLIES DID NOT HAVE 2,000 LOSSES IT WAS ( DRUM ROLL ) 10,000 LOSSES . DAMN !!!

  74. bucknersankles says:

HEY PHILLIE FAN WALL ST, SHOULD’NT YOU BE OUT CELEBRATING ? WHY ARE YOU ON THIS BLOG WHEN YOU COULD BE OUT TURNING OVER SOME MORE SUVS OR MAYBE BASHING OUT SOME MORE BANK WINDOWS DID YOU RUN OUT OF MATCHES ?

    • gomets6091 says:

ummm….because he’s on Wall St.? Seriously, I hate Phillies fans as much as anyone, but this is just ignorant.

  75. kevinmets31 says:

Philly Fan on Wall St. you are the reason why Phillie fans get such a bad rap. I mean look your team just won the world series and you have nothing better to do than smack talk on a mets fan site. You are pathetic. Philly Fan on Wall St. is one of these guys who have to talk smack through a keyboard because they simply do not have the balls to do it in public out on the streets.

  76. nastyslider says:

Who here would care Philly Fan on Wall St. died. Seriously kill yourself Philly fan!

  77. wa2k99 says:

And the girl in the picture is such a cunt.

    • ASod1975 says:

How does that word make it through the filter yet s ucks, cla ss and the like get zapped….very odd, to say the least.

  78. phillyhater says:

Philly Fan on Wall St. I would like nothing more than to punch you right between your eyes, and knock you to the floor, and then beat your face in with my steel toed boot. Go get a life. Like kevinmets31 said before me, you are the epitome of a philly fan. You are what makes philly fans get such a bad rap

  79. JerryKoosman says:

    A few thoughts….

    1. Someone wrote (above) “wait till next year!” Who used to say that? And now we have a ballpark JUST like them. Great.

    2. If the Met players actually take the bait they are being fed by the Phils…and they respond…GREAT. They need to show a pulse, a little fight. I was screaming this season…hoping a pitcher would throw inside and “announce their presence at the door with a fastball.” I miss guys like Ray Knight.

    3. What’s wrong with a rivalry? I think it’s a little sad that Rollins, Williams and the fans are hung up on the Mets while the Phillies are winning the WS, but hey, whatever. Might make things more interesting. But again, the Mets have to respond and show some life.

    • ASod1975 says:

And as I said before, that starts with a well-placed fastball in a Phillies’ ribs. I don’t care who…Rollins, Victorino, Utley, Werth. Like I said above, I don’t condone throwing at a guy’s head but you’ve got to send a message somehow…..Man I miss 1986.

      • millsy says:

Something tells me Rollins may get one from Santana after his comments today especially since Santana is one of the Mets players with some moxie.

  80. 2009_believe says:

    Hey guys,

I am new to the blog, well I have been reading for a while and now i’ve decided to post something. The phillies fans are unbelievable but this its all just a matter of jealousy. Don’t you remember being in grammar school and everyone put down the really smart kid, or made fun of couples etc etc. Its all because they were jealous. Jimmy Rollins or whatever, he’s jealous that he doesn’t play for new york and that he doesn’t play in a town that knows their baseball and that is there for their team.

As for Jose Reyes, please I think he is tame, its time to get more swagger, more energy. let him dance every game for every thing. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I want them to hate us, let us get in their heads. Then let’s beat them. If you are winning nobody can say anything.

As for the WS this year, congrats to the phillies they did go all the way, not to say it did not hurt, it does but there are some good players on that team that deserve their rings and i am sure their are some good fans that deserve to have this. Good for them

as for the rest of them, let’s shut them up next year, let’s get some attitude because let’s face is this, oh let’s be nice guys isn’t working. Its not the likability series, its the world series.

welcome to new york, we don’t like you either.

    • ASod1975 says:

Yeah, I know I sound like a broken record when I say this, but just go back to 1986 (can you tell I’ve been watching the DVDs lately?). Before the season started, Davey Johnson came out and told his team that they were not only going to win, they were going to dominate. He didn’t care who heard it. He told the media, let it spread around. The Mets were great and they knew they were great. They stepped on the field and took it out of everyone’s arses and then moved on to the next city and did it again. Everyone hated them with their multiple curtain calls, their young brash superstar (Strawberry) , top of the order agitators in Dykstra and Backman, a true captain on the field in Hernandez and pitching, pitching, pitching both starting and relief. Everyone in the league hated the Mets, and you know what? The team seemed to thrive off that…they loved it! It’s one thing for Beltran to kind of jokingly answer Rollins “tell him we’re the team to beat” but the words rung hollow because Beltran just isn’t that type of guy (not knocking him, I’m one of the biggest Beltran fans around). Besides the obvious downfall of not having a bullpen that could get Furioso out, let alone major league hitters, this team needs get some swagger, get some attitude back. Get into a fight every once in awhile when teams talk smack…don’t back down. METS IN 09 (gotta believe, which was our battle cry, da mn it!

  81. metsfan57 says:

I’m glad Matt wrote about this because I was thinking about how much phillies fans always mention the mets even in the most inappropriate and unnecessary times. Like today, during the Phillies parade, Jimmy Rollins was making a speech. Near the end of the speech, Rollins just had to mention the mets and had to mention Johan Santana and how “they can’t do it with just one player” I understand what he is trying to say, but give me a break! The mets did not affect what the phillies did in the postseason, yet they must bring it all back to us somehow! Will phillies fans ever get enough satisifaction to the point where they will not have to say something about us?

    • ASod1975 says:

Thank God I stayed away from ESPN all day today. I wanted nothing to do with watching that drivel. Unfortunately, my job as a copy editor at a newspaper requires me to put stories and photos on a page and I designed the baseball page tonight (as I do most nights). It was sickening having to maintain my professionalism to write the headline. Fortunately, Rollins’ boasts weren’t mentioned in the story, although Utley’s dropping of the F bomb was featured prominently….

      • metsfan57 says:

Utley dropping the F bomb was ridiculous! Seriously, can this guy NOT say the f-word in public?(remember, the “boo? F$@# you” thing during the home run derby?) Did Utley even realize that there were thousands and thousands of children watching this at their stadium and on tv? What a low life piece of scum.

        • loqiel says:

You’d love for that “low life piece of scum” who rescues kittens with his wife for the SPCA to play second base for you any day. I think of him and Rollins like Dykstra: you hate them if they’re not on your team and love them when they are.

        • gomets6091 says:

          and Jose Reyes…

        • metsfan57 says:

I would never accept Rollins and Utley on this team. We can do just fine without them. And i don’t care what off the field stuff Utley does, he needs to grow up and be mature. But loqiel, this a mets site. You clearly have no life if you must come here and bash the mets for no reason. get the f#$@ out!

        • loqiel says:

I’m bashing the Mets? How? Second base was one of the biggest holes on your team last year. I was just putting forth that you would be happy to have someone of Chase Utley’s caliber to man that post, instead of Ancient Castillo or Awful Reyes.

As a Phils fan, I loathed Dykstra in the late 80s. He was a terror on the bases. He played a hard centerfield. When he came over to the Phils and helped get them to the 1993 World Series, we loved him. That’s just how players like him are.

I’ll go one further: I dislike Jose Reyes. A lot. It has nothing to do with his ability, though. He has more talent than Rollins, hands down. I hate the dancing. Would I want Reyes to dance if he was on my team? If it means he’s cranking out triples and leading the team to wins and pennants, he can dance until Gene Kelly is jealous, I don’t care. Would I like him if he was on my team? If Rollins wasn’t there, yes, I would.

That’s just how these things go.

    • wrightstuff08 says:

metsfan57, that is exactly the point! These idiots just win the WS and still feel the need to rub it in the Mets faces??? Rollins, Utley and Victorino needs to be beaned to the ground repeatedly next season with hard inside fastballs!

  82. bucknersankles says:

THE BOTTOM LINE IS THE PHILLIES DO NOT RESPECT THE METS. THE METS HAVE ALLOWED THEM TO GET AWAY WITH SMACK, I’M NOT ADVOCATING VIOLENCE, HOWEVER, BEING AN AVID MET AND BASEBALL FAN FOR 37 YRS I’VE COME TO REALIZE THAT BASBALL IS ITS OWN WORLD WITH ITS OWN LANGUAGE AND SOMETIMES A WELL PLACED FASTBALL DRIVEN INTO A LOUD MOUTHS BACK SPEAKS VOLUMES, IT’S HIGH TIME THE METS MAN UP. CONSIDER IF ALBERT BELLE OR GEORGE BELL HAD BEEN ON OUR TEAM THE LAST TWO YEARS OR IF ED LYNCH HAD BEEN IN OUR ROTATION I PROMISE YOU ALL HELL WOULD HAVE BROKEN LOOSE, YES WE MUST WIN BUT WE MUST ALSO DEMAND RESPECT.

    • ASod1975 says:

I agree….bring me Ray Knight or Wally Backman for the Mets’ first base coach….someone with fire. I can still vividly picture Ray Knight clocking Eric Davis in the face after a hard slide setting off a wild brawl in Cincinnati….good times!

    • phricking great parade says:

See, that’s the difference. The Phillies don’t talk it, they do it. The whole NLCS turned when Myers threw behind Manny’s head. While that goofball is very good at decking 80 yr old travel agents, he doesn’t have the same baseballs when it comes to doing something to Myers. The whole Dodger team imploded because the Dodger pitchers didn’t retaliate until after a public outcry of 2 days. I gaurantee the Phillies will respond asap.

      • millsy says:

In all fairness, the Phillies do both. Rollins shoots his mouth off all the time - he can’t shut up like yesterday. He reminds no one of Derek Jeter, who I really don’t like but is a just do your job on the field type of player.

To Rollins credit, he and his teammates have backed it up so far. However, once he doesn’t anymore, look out. There will be a serious backlash.

    • millsy says:

I love my Mets but they have lacked heart for a while. Remember the whole Roger Clemens/Mike Piazza crap. No one retaliated forever and then Shawn Estes threw that pitch 3 feet behind Clemens 2 years later. It was so lame. Someone should have nailed Jeter in the back after the Piazza beaning even if it meant getting thrown out of the game. Sometimes you have to send the message we are not going to take your crap but for some reason we never do.

I know the Wilpons hated the late 80s Mets because of their carousing and their attitude but you need a few players with attitude to win. The Mets haven’t had any in forever and I think it is part of the reason we keep having these near misses.

  83. joe the wanderer says:

man…the Phillies and their fans….. really strange group of people….cannot go one day without thinking about the mets.

the 2009 mets team seriously need to just go out there and absolutely destroy every team in the national league especially the east. i expect the mets players to not back down from a fight.

omar and jerry got to bring the 25 players together and make them have one thing on their mind, that is, it is US against ALL OF THE NATIONAL LEAGUE.

Take back the National League East Division! No excuses. i expect all the pitchers on the team to not be afraid of going inside against anyone. if they won’t take a step back, then bring high heat to their faces.

i expect David Wright and the rest of the players to shut up when they lose a game. I DO NOT WANT TO HEAR “GOTTA TIP YOUR CAP” to anyone. Wright needs to get away from the stupid crap Willie taught him and focus on hitting everything to the opposite field and center field, only then will he be able to improve his ability to hit in big spots and become a very dangerous hitter.

the mets need a fast start in the beginning of the season.

    • ASod1975 says:

I agree the attitude should be more F Them than “tip your cap, they played a great game tonight….”

    • joe the wanderer says:

if Wright and reyes needs any motivation, here is one: almost every player in the National League did not choose the two of you to be in the All Star game at all, instead they chose Corey F’n Hart and miguel i used steroids tejada.

the mets fans are behind the two all the way. they defended the two of you, it is time for the two of you and the rest of the team to reward the mets fans that have bleed blue and orange in good times and bad times especially the past three seasons.

most of all, earn back the Respect that have been lost the last two decades. bring joy and happiness back to NY the National League way.

      Let’s Go Mets!!!

      • CitizenSnips says:

Corey Hart and Tejada were fan votes, dude. I dunno what you’re talking about. Did you even see the ma.ss hysteria in Milwaukee in the whole “OMFG VOTE HART OMFG” campaign? And who exactly is Corey Hart again?

    • JsyCtyFan7 says:

Absolutely. Wright needs to grow a pair. I expect him to be A LOT tougher in ‘09. In fact, screw it. Everyone should follow Reyes’ and Santana’s lead. Have fun yet be gangsta. Show some swagger and throw at the Phillies hitters.

The Mets are being BULLIED by the Phillies. And all I can see is them taking it on the chin with many self-loathing fans following suit.

GO JOSE. DANCE & SING IF YOU HAVE TO NEXT YEAR.

  84. wallybackman'sfire says:

Let’s all just take a deep breath…. As cities, New York and Philadelphia are both great cities. To denigrate either one is just dumb. And to take some kind of personal value from being from either city is silly. It’s as if some of you derive self-worth from the city or area you are from. The major thing that determines an allegiance to a particular team is where one was born and raised. (Had I been born in Boston, chances are I’d be a Red Sox fan for example.) Argue all you want over who has the better fan base…. but the main thing that separates us is where we happened to be born. We didn’t choose the team we root for so much as we were drawn towards rooting for our teams - again, mainly by virtue of geography.

    • MrDudeAndStuff says:

That was very nicely said, sir.

For the record, I absolutely love the city of New York and visit it often. Don’t particularly care for their sports teams because I’m from South Jersey near Philly, but as you said, a lot has to do with where you live geographically.

  85. joe the wanderer says:

i expect every mets player to shed that stupid arrogance mentality, which is the main reason why they choke back to back, and become players that go out there to prove something to the fans and to every team in baseball, that is the mets are a team that wants to win and are willing to sacrifice their bodies to win at all cost.

jose reyes needs to grow up offensively and start using his abilities to his advantage instead of going to the plate and looking to hit for extra base hits or homeruns, which result in him to popping out into the outfield.

reyes needs to earn back his name as a player. he needs to focus on just getting on base in every at bat be it via a walk, bunt, error or hit, then try to swipe a base and always try to go from first to third when the player behind him gets a hit. reyes’s failure to get on base consistently and use his speed game in the past two september was one of the main key component in the mets to collapse.

i expect him to improve himself in the art of bunting in spring training 2009 and improve his approach at the plate.

    • Lord Charles Curveball says:

You realize he was the first player in the history of baseball with over 200 plus hits, 50 plus steals, 15 plus homers, 40 plus doubles and 15 plus triples in the history of major league baseball. His OBP was the highest in his career.
He led the NL in multi-hit games.

If you’re looking for the “problem” with the 2008 Mets…Jose Reyes isn’t it.

    • JsyCtyFan7 says:

Joe the Wander - Ummm..I’m not sure what baseball team you watched this year. Reyes had one of his best years.

If you think he’s the problem with the team I’d love it if you and like minded folks spent the offseaon looking for a new team to root for. I’m sick of the self-hating Mets fans. Time to get tough and fight back. Not cow tow to our bullies.

  86. bucknersankles says:

THIS IS WHY I HOPE THE METS GO OUT AND GET RAMIREZ NOT ONLY DOES HE PROVIDE US WITH THE RIGHT HANDED BAT WE NEED ( ARGUABLY THE GREATEST EVER ) BUT HE PROVIDES US WITH SOME SERIOUS ATTITUDE, CONSIDER MIKE PIAZZA’S RESPONSE TO ROGER CLEMEN’S CHUCKING A BROKEN BAT HANDLE AT HIM AND CHALLENGING HIM PIAZZA DIDN’T DO A DAMN THING, RAMIREZ ON THE OTHER HAND WAS READY TO TAKE CLEMEN’S HEAD OFF BECAUSE HE THOUGHT CLEMENS WAS THROWING AT HIM ( THE PITCH WASN’T EVEN CLOSE ) ENUOGH SAID.

    • joe the wanderer says:

so you are basically begging for another collapse then. two is not enough along with a side dish of phillies being champions.

it is time to get younger and stay away from the big names. i prefer to find someone that wants to prove that he is worthy of being an everyday player. just look at Carlos Quientin of the Chi-Sox as an example. the reward will be greater if it works out.

    • phillyhater says:

WE NEED MANNY. THAT WOULD BE AWESOME
CAN YOU IMAGINE THROWING THIS LINEUP OUT THERE EVERY DAY?

      3) Wright
      4) Manny
      5) Beltran
      6) Delgado
      7) Church
      8) Schneider

      1) Johan
      2) AJ Burnett
      3) Big Pelf
      4) Ollie
      5) Maine

      lefty spec.- Feliciano
      righty spec- J. Smith
      middle relief- Stokes
      setup man- Cordero
      closer- Fuentes/ Putz/ Street

OK, yes, i’m bored, and just trying to dream up a perfect roster for next year. Hey, there’s nothing wrong with wishful thinking right?

Can we sign Fuentes, Manny, and Burnett/ or Lowe? Is that too much to ask for? Omar said money isnt gonna be an issue right? Are they all type A free agents?

    • loqiel says:

And the first time he goes after a double in the corner in first gear you’ll rue the day you signed him to a huge deal.

      • rustyjr says:

same thing if we ssigned pat buerell

      • wrightstuff08 says:

I DON’T CARE IF HE GOES AFTER A DOUBLE CRAWLING ON HIS BELLY, HIS OFFENSIVE NUMBERS ARE STAGGERING TO SAY THE LEAST AND WILL MORE THAN COMPENSATE FOR “MANNY BEING MANNY.” I DON’T THINK WITH VETERANS LIKE DELGADO AND BELTRAN AND THE FACT THAT WE’D BE IN HOT PURSUIT OF A WORLD TITLE THAT MANNY WOULD SERIOUSLY JEOPARDIZE THAT GOAL, IN FACT, THERE’S NO DOUBT THAT NOT ONLY WILL HE IMMEDIATELY GET ON THE SAME PAGE BUT THAT HE WILL LEAD THE WAY.

  87. iluvbuckner says:

Philly has always been second fiddle to NYC. Just the two cities themselves and their people are completely different. They’re losers and NYC is full…sleazy wackaloons. There IS a difference.

Talk about an inferiority complex. The more they do it, the better we feel. You would NEVER have these kinds of reactions and comments in NY.

    NEVER.

And that’s what makes NYC better.

  88. Bogar says:

250 posts telling us that the Mets aren’t obsessed with the Phillies, that they’re not worthy of rivalry or concern, and, oh yeah, they lost a lot of games before all of us were born.

Of course, one could point out that they have thousands of more wins than the Mets as well, or they’ve won more games since 1962 than the Mets since the Mets came into existence, but that wouldn’t be fair.

    Since 1962….

Mets titles 2 (last one 22 years ago)
Phils titles 2 (last one a couple days ago)

    Mets 5 division titles
    Phils 7 division titles

Mets 4 pennants (last one 8 years ago)
    Phils 4 pennants

    • rustyjr says:

      and your point is?

      • Bogar says:

Folks here obsess with the games the Phillies didn’t win in the 1800s and 1930s and the titles they didn’t win before they were born.

If the Phils had won the 1913 WS and the 1924 WS they’d all be typing “They only have 4 WS” posts.

Yeah, the Cubs won the WS before we were born. Who cares?

As long as I’ve been alive, both the Mets and Phils have won 2 WS. Since I can remember them, it’s Phils 2, Mets 1.

It’s time to come up with some new material.

  89. stickguy says:

all this attitude stuff is nice. Misdirected maybe, but nice.

However, it would be better to say, have better pitching? Maybe in the pen?

And not have to run out spare parts in LF and 2B most of the season.

All the heart and grit in the world cant overcome a lack of talent. At least not in a 162 game grind of a season. Maybe it can help in a short series (oh wait, thats usually Sp that covers tht..)

Just tell me how a lot of the same guys on the Rays went from unmotivated losers with no heart to a motivated bunch of gritty winners in one year? Was it because the guys they added had fire, or talent? Or maybe the holdovers got better as the developed?

Hey, CC is a loser! he chokes in the playoffs! No fire! But he still makes the Mets a better team, that wins more games.

If the Mets don’t win in 2009 it won’t be because of lack of motivation. Just arms. Putting aside, of course, the “clutch vs. chokers” arguement! But that isn’t motivation either.

Anyway, these guys make so much money now, and move around so much, the whole team hating thing is overblown. They have allegience to their paychecks, agents and players union before a city or team!

    • johnstearns says:

Amen. Arms. Arms, arms, arms. Starters who make it to the seventh. John Maine is in my top 5 favorite Mets but someone needs to show him how not to get in the foul-ball showdowns. Hard to spare the pen when you throw twenty pitches even in a no-run inning.

Three decent new guys in the pen.

If the starters are bailing after the fifth in May, call it a year, the pen will burn out by July.

      • Gland says:

I can’t believe how ironic the “shut up and play” thing is since Jimmy Rollins has been yapping more than anyone (with his predictions and talking about the fans) for the last two years.

    • gomets6091 says:

while I agree with your general premise, I do think it’s important to have good clubhouse chemistry, which I don’t think the Mets had the past 2 years. It’s nothing quantifiable, and I’m not saying go get Joe McEwing b/c he’s “scrappy and gritty,” but I am saying Omar should really try to figure out who would be the best PEOPLE to add to the clubhouse, both in terms of their on-field and off-field impact. To say that chemistry doesn’t matter at all for these guys is to deny the fact that they are human beings. People perform better when they are happy and in a good environment.

    • kd bart says:

Thank you. It was not about attlitude and toughness this season between the Phils and the Mets. It came down to the Phillies having a vastly superior bullpen. The Phils bullpen blew very few games this season and the team was confident if they had a lead in the latter third of the game, it would hold up. The Mets, on the otherhand, could never depend on their bullpen, particularly in the last third of the season, in a tight game sitiuation. Think of the countless games blown. Even when they won , it was a struggle. A 7-2 lead in the 7th wasn’t even safe. Switch bullpens and the Mets win the division by 5 games

  90. Moises says:

So yesterday as people were leaving the parade I hear the Jose chant going. If you are going to mock the Mets there should be a reason. The Cards did it because they beat us. If they want to rub it in a little against the Rays, at least that makes sense. I won’t say all, but most Philly fans are obsessed with the Mets.

It’s BS though because I’m going to say that at least half of the “fans” that were in the city yesterday weren’t real fans. They don’t follow the team. They are only there because it’s really easy to be a Phillies fan right now. There are some true fans that deserve this, but if you weren’t a part of the suffering and bad times of the Phillies then you don’t really have a right to celebrate. What happens when the Phillies stink, do you think they will have this support? I doubt it.

The Phillies were better than the Mets this year. They won the world series. I don’t understand why they even care about the Mets right now. We are talking about them because they are talking about us. We are supposed to be jealous and bitter.

It’s going to be a long, cold winter…

    Let’s go Mets!

    • rustyjr says:

jimmy rollins at the parade yesterday praised johan but went on to slam the mets by saying - 1 player doesnt make a winner - i say lets groove a pitch right into his testicles - oh wait he doesn’t have any testies

Actually, I heard a chant in the same melody, but they were saying it to the word ‘Phillies.’

The Jose chant is nothing more then taking from a soccer chanting song called “Ole.” They just insert Jose’s name. It was the same thing with T.O.

      • rustyjr says:

mr dude i don’t mean to be sarcastic but DUHHHH lol just like sweet caroline originated with the red sox we will rock you was used in english soccer matches and YA GOTTA BELIEVE !! is the mets rally cry. like i said last nite i congratulate the phils i wish it was my team that won - they did’nt so its time to move foward i also admit ive trolled on beerleauger - but that was pre season and i never got obnoxious as some of your philly brethern have gotten like i said there are some good philly fans but imo most are front runners that can’t wait til fliers/ eagle season to begin

        • MrDudeAndStuff says:

You’re free to your opinion, but you guys like to dispel a great deal of myth and fiction on here about us. That particular post I responded to was claiming the Jose chant was said and acts as if it is exclusive. I was at the parade. I heard the ‘Ole’ song and they were saying “Phillies.” It works with any 2 syllable word.

I was merely clearing up the misconception.

And I’d hate to break it to you, there are just as many obnoxious Mets fans who like to spew their venom at us. It’s equal on both sides.

        • rustyjr says:

oh no disrespect i comprehended what you said im just letting you know it’s comon knowledge where that came from by the way is the electric factory still around?

        • rustyjr says:

and i amdmit there are obnoxious mets fans like there are obnoxious boston fans and nauseating yankee fans - i don’t mind the pirate fans - they are a quiet bunch lol

        • MrDudeAndStuff says:

As in the concert venue? Yes. The Electric Factory is still around.

        • MrDudeAndStuff says:

I have family in Pittsburgh. Pirates fans are a quiet bunch, but the Steelers fans are pretty vocal.

        • rustyjr says:

well the steelers fans have something to be vocal about yeah the band i work for was supposed to play tour with type o negative like 8 years ago and that was one of the venues i believe it was a halloween show

        • rustyjr says:

lets just agree to disagree and try to be civil mrdude i like haveing civil debates and i give you lots of respect

        • MrDudeAndStuff says:

I try to be civil here. It just boils my blood when the myths and misconceptions are accepted as fact.

And for the record, I have always loved New York City and visit it very often.

        • rustyjr says:

always wanted to visit philly wanted to see the dali exhibit - saw it at moma

        • MrDudeAndStuff says:

Make sure you check out the Academy of Fine Arts on North Broad Street if you’re into that stuff.

        • rustyjr says:

will try by the way is the band leatherwolf still around??

        • MrDudeAndStuff says:

No idea. I’m very out of touch with the indie alternative modern music scene.

        • rustyjr says:

ahh more 80’s metal but ok dick dale surf music i presume?

        • MrDudeAndStuff says:

The stuff I listen to varies from Billy Joel and Springsteen to A Perfect Circle and Shinedown.

        • rustyjr says:

i like all those bands add in the good rats and we could be friends lol

  91. rustyjr says:

guys burgos was released on bail in the d.r he mainained his innocence and said he was accused of this because “people are jealous of me” - damn what a waste of sperm

  92. rustyjr says:

yeah gland and here the guy that was fined by his manager more than once for not showing up on time for pre-game workouts

  93. Furioso says:

Mets fans learn nothing over the past 3 seasons

Philly can say whatever they want

    Because they backed it up

Something our team hasn’t done in decades

You’re all like Jose Reyes - you act as if you won something but can’t back it up (Reyes takes Sept. off again)

And then you wonder why every team and their fans rags on our losses

    • rustyjr says:

hey furi if you care about the mets so much start your own blog and you will have a potent army of 2 you , fiya minaya and flight from houston - kinda like the holy trinity of met schmucks

  94. rustyjr says:

    *3

  95. chavez06 says:

every one…realistically what’s it going to land J. Soria from KC as the new closer at Citi field? Can it be done without trading F-Mart?

    • rustyjr says:

nothing he isn’t goin anywhere the royals owner stated adamndently that he was tired of losing and was going to start fielding a winning team plus the already locked up soria to a long, cheap contract ala the rays

      • kingman 26 says:

Maybe we can trade a microphone for him, a la the trade for the Bluesmobile…

And I try not to criticize Furioso, but the line about the Holy Trinity of Met Schmucks was really very good….

        • rustyjr says:

well i try its not everyday you see the good ol boys in troll form kingman
look i’d trade the woman who twirls her arms from 86 and bongoman for him lol

        • kingman 26 says:

I think if we throw in that Sign Man guy from the 70s and some of the tomato plants from the Shea bullpen, we may have a deal!!

Gotta go, keep up the good fight Rusty!

        • rustyjr says:

i think we will go above and beyond if we also send in the deal parachute guy and a dvd of the curley shuffle

  96. drtmuir says:

Maybe it’s that the New York teams are seen more nationally, but I just don’t understand the perception that the Mets “celebrate” any more, or more obnoxiously than anyone else. Sure Reyes is exuberant, but so what? A lot of other players on other teams are just as demonstrative, and run their mouths a lot more. I really don’t get what the Phillies’ problem is, especially with players like Victorino and Rollins. They aren’t exactly models of old-fashioned decorem.

    • rustyjr says:

everyone hates n.y look at whenever the senate or congress aprove money allocations we always get pooed upon even though we are the state the brings in alot more than we get back

  97. chavez06 says:

mets should then sign cc and lowe and let maine close. let heilman and niese fight for 5th spot. i thin following team has aood chance to win and ur not giving away the future.

    johan
    cc
    big pelf
    lowe
    heilman

    maine
    parnell
    smith
    stokes
    lefty?
    lefty?

    reyes
    murphy (2b)
    wright
    delgado
    beltran
    church
    evans(lf)
    schneider

    easley
    tatis
    casrto
    chavez
    a. reyes
    lefty ph

  98. Fiya Minaya says:

Easley speaking his mind obviously means he knows Minaya doesn’t want him back. Too bad.

    • rustyjr says:

hey is the second head of the goly trinity of mets schmucks - i do believe that damian might be back - good backup plan for 2b since we aren’t losing castillio

  99. 1993Mets says:

Can Metsblog please stop covering this Phillies crap. True Mets fans don’t care. Stop obsessing about Phillies fans obsessing about the Mets!!!!

  100. 1993Mets says:

Do we really need to know about every time a Phillie or Phillies fans mention the Mets? Frankly I don’t care. I could understand if this was done once or twice or during the actual season but this needs to stop. This is Metsblog not Phillies blog. Focus on the Mets, their off-season plans, and the 09 season. Stop worrying about the past. By posting this Phillies stuff continually you are making Mets fans just as bad, if not worse than Phillies fans!

  101. oldmanclemens says:

11 wins out of 18 is hardly domination, especially when the mets faced kyle kendrick 3 times, adam eaton 3 times, and j.a. happ only once.

the phillies best 5 starters are hamels, myers, moyer, blanton, and happ. the mets faced kendrick 3 times and eaton 3 times.

thus, the mets saw the phillies 6-7 starters for a total of SIX games out of 18, while they faced the phillies ace, hamels, only twice out of 18.

on the other hand, the phillies faced the mets ace, santana, 5 times.

if these teams met in the playoffs the phillies would win more often than not, and mets fans know it. and youre bragging about an 11-7 margin? enjoy it, because if you told me that the mets would face the phils 6-7 starters in 33 percent of the phils-mets games, while the phils see santana 5 times and hamels only goes twice, i would have taken 7 wins out of 18 as a phillies fan.

but i guess thats too logical?

    • kingman 26 says:

Not all of us are bragging about this irrelevance…the 1988 Mets won 100 games in the regular season and beat the Dodgers 10 out of 11 games…then they beat us and won the World Series.

On the other hand, coming on to a non-playoff team’s main blog site to defend your team is not only pathetic and sad, but does in fact show the mindset of an apparently large contingent of you folks, who, like the guys on your championship team, apparently really cannot stop trying to prove you are better, even after beating us last year and winning it all this year.

I am sure the 1986 Mets mentioned the Cardinals and Astros and Red Sox and Yankees after winning it all…oops, I guess not…teams and fans who are secure in their own skins don’t behave like they are second best and won by accident, which sure is what the pathetic trolling—and comments by various Phils players and announcers—states in bold, loud, capital letters.

That, my friend, is the definition of sad and pathetic insecurity.

      • oldmanclemens says:

the only insecurity here is that someone logically pointed out why 11-7 doesnt matter, and you couldnt handle it.

trust me, by now, if i were insecure, i wouldnt be able to stick as a philly fan. the only people in philly who are truly “insecure” resort to rooting for the dallas cowboys and new jersey devils.

        • kingman 26 says:

Yes, your feeling the need to come on here and point out why 11–7 doesn’t matter—-which I agreed with entirely in my first paragraph—-is indeed precisely the type of sad insecurity which mysteriously infects the Phillies’ fans, players, and announcers.

        • oldmanclemens says:

all i did was read a post written about my team, so i added my two cents. metsblog is a good site, with intelligent fans. im not allowed to check it out as a phillies fan? dont write about the phillies if you dont want their fans posting reasonable, thought-out responses.

      • phillyhater says:

thank you, I couldnt have said it better myself

  102. phukthephills says:

sign garland, ibanez, cruz, lefty reliever, maybe extra cheap starter
trade for closer such as putz, sherrill, street, whoever

    reyes
    murph 2nd
    dwright
    delgado
    beltran
    ibanez
    church
    schnieder

    johan
    pelf
    garland
    maine
    niese/another starter through trade/free agent

    closer by trade
    cruz setup

this is reasonable…the rotation may be iffy, but this is cheap. garland is a good pitcher who imo is very underrated and remember maine when he was good…very effective..i would trust this rotation..not sure bout the 5 spot tho

    • joe the wanderer says:

i am not against getting Garland if the price is right.

Omar should consider putting Jason Vargas, if he is still here come spring training, in the bullpen as the long man.

if Chris Capuano is healthy and available in a trade, Omar should consider taking a look. that is if he is ready to pitch come spring training. he could be the number % starter.

i would love if Omar can try to get Jeff Francis from the Rockies or Homer Bailey from the Reds.

Joe Crede would look awesome in left field or at first base if the price is right.

i don’t want players like Bedard, Lowe, Manny, CC, Krod, Fuentes, Sheets, Abreu, Ibanez, Perez, and most of all Tex on this team. Omar’s focus should be on other low key players instead of these players.

i hope Omar use the rule 5 draft wisely, get the team a closer or an outfielder, who can hit 18 plus homers and drive in a lot of runs with a low batting average in the bottom of the lineup, from the draft.

  103. lightsout123 says:

i still cant believe they won. but i cant complain about the phillies being obsessed with ny because, i hated the fact that nygiant fans, when they won the championship, kinda forgot about the giants winning and celebrated that the patriots lost. ie. making shirts 18-1.

  104. joe the wanderer says:

i have enough of this phillie posting on metsblog.

the season is over, i want some hotstove coverage leading up to the gm meetings. can i get some nice rumors or trade proposal.

here is what the mets 2009 team mind set needs to be.

that is, it’s US against the other 29 MLB teams. no friendly exchange, no tap or slap on the bottoms, NO TIPPING YOUR CAP or praising a garbage pitcher or hitter. go out there and just find a way to win. i don’t want stupid responses like “team to beat or making the post season”. show the 29 MLB teams that you can win on the field. prove it on the field that you can win and not in the locker room in front of the cameras or radios.

do not focus on sticking it to one team like the phillies or marlins, instead focus on sticking it to the entire major league both nl and al.

the 2009 mets team need to become the New York Mets, that everyone in New York will cheer for till the very end. be the NY mets, the team that one either loves or hates, there is no middle ground.

  105. joe the wanderer says:

can the mets just release Burgos. i don’t want to hear anything about him and the mets in the same sentence anymore.

    • The Slider says:

With all due respect, deciding what to do with Burgos, is the least of our worries. Besides, I think the criminal justice system down there in the DR, or PR or Panama will make that decision for us.

The areas that we need to work on is, IMO:

      (1) Pitching (the starting rotation) - what to do with Ollie?; can we sign Derrick Lowe?; where do Niese and Parnell fit?

      (2) Pitching (the bullpen) - finding/signing or trading for a closer?; what to do with Heilman, Schoe, Fediciano, and Sanchez?; will we re-sign Ayala?

      (3) Catching - this web site has said that the Mets were not happy with the production, defense and leadership from this position. They have made this a priority.

      (4) Second Base - Will Omar be content to just to with Castillo/Easley/Reyes or will he look to dump Castillo and sign Orlando Hudson?

      (5) Left Field - We just resigned Fernando Tatis, who was excellent for us this past year, which leads me to believe that Omar is going to go with a Tatis/Murphy/Evans/Chaves committee. I can live with that, I guess. If we’re going to keep the left hand hitting Ryan Church in right, then there’s going to be a lot of pressure on Tatis, a right handed hitter, to produce.

With all this said, there’s the possibility that Omar might pull a rabbit out of his hat and make a bold move “out of the blue” for something that we never even considered.

But, you’re right, I’m tired of talking about he Phillies and prefer to concentrate on what WE are going to doing this off season.

We soundly beat the pants off the Phillies all year long. In head to head battle. We were the better team. Even with the worst bullpen in baseball. The year before, we beat us and we beat ourselves. My point is that we a little tweaking, we should be in a position next hear to win the Division.

We just have to go out and play the games.

      • loqiel says:

There’s no reason the Mets and Phillies shouldn’t both make the playoffs every year. The NL West is a joke. The Central is a one-team division. The East has easily two of the best four teams in the NL. Make it happen, Omar.

        • KickedintheMetsiclesAgain says:

With CC Sabathia and Sheets gone, I expect Milwaukee to fade for another 10 years at least.

  106. stickguy says:

Now that the parade (man, what a boondoggle that was, transportaion wise!) is over, the Phillie players have dispersed, and this topic can just go away.

Instead, we can have 20 posts a day disecting obscure BP trade candidates, and which 10 FAs to sign! Much better IMO.

I know they left. My daughter’s friend was at the philly airport this afternoon, and sent her a cell phone picture of shane victorino heading for a plane!

  107. Philnym31 says:

I really hope we give strong consideration to signing Junichi Tazawa. He’s only 22 years old and was easily the best prospect in the Japanese Draft. He decided to skip playing in his home country and come straight to the MLB, actually the first time in history that this circumstance took place. I know that velocity is not everything, but he tops out at 97 mph. There is no reason in the world why we should not sign this kid.

  108. wallybackman'sfire says:

I wouldn’t mind seeing Edgar Renteria playing @B for the Mets next year. I wonder if he’d be willing to shift to @B - and whether the Mets would pay $ for him? Only if Castillo can be ridded of I suppose. Actually I think I like Renteria better than Hudson for @B next year.

  109. metsfan1 says:

Phillies fans are obsessed with Mets fans because so many Mets fans get into Citizens Bank Ballpark and root for the Mets. They look 90 miles up the pike and see a team that outspends them and gets a lot of press. Now we will have a nice stadium that will generate even more revenue to make the gap even wider.

I would like to see the Mets keep their mouth shut (like the NYG) and just play. Philly fans have been notorious for talking about how great they are or will be with the addition of a free agent no matter what the sport. These Phillies had a bunch of blue collar bucket men players that performed in the clutch. Hey Omar, get my drift. How about laying off of the latin flavor so much and bring in some win at all cost players.

Anyway, I hate Philly fans but I have to give the Phillies credit.

    • rustyjr says:

mets fan did u feel the same way in 86 when we were also the most hated team in the mlb? the only difference was they wore their hearts on their sleeves and fought on field and off this team needs a sense of unity and awillingness to have each others backs

    • stickguy says:

BLue collar bucket men? Who? DId Richie Hebner come back out of the “grave” to play for them?

Utley is a surfer boy. Howard? Victorino? Rollins? Not a lotta blue collar in that bunch!

  110. Razor Shines says:

I am a die-hard Met fan and I don’t dislike the Phils. It’s so sad how much they want to be disliked. I saw Rollins bring up the Mets on the news during the parade. I honestly don’t understand their obsession — sure I want to beat the champions next year but the hatred runs in one direction, and it makes no sense as no one on our team taunts like Rollins does. Reyes celebrates a bit too much but it is genuine and about him and his teammates. Lo Duca and Milledge are gone. It’s a one way fight and frankly, I couldn’t care less and hope this is the last Phillies post unless it is about Burrell as a FA or trade talk.

  111. CitizenSnips says:

Are you actually going to some thoughtful and positive suggestions on how to make the team better or are you going to continually b*tch and moan because the only thing you ever get joy out of is proudly telling everyone how the Phillies have nothing to prove now?

  112. rustyjr says:

citizen why are you wasting your time and energy on these trolls? they are here to get a rise out of us leave em be and they will dissapear

  113. Tidewater says:

Why is it being a troll to admit that this year the Phils got the best of us? There is no solace in taking the season series.

  114. theNYmetz says:

    Word of advice..

You want people to start taking you seriously?
Start expressing your opinions in a more intellectual manner, and stop being so malevolent towards Met fans. You cannot expect people to actually give you a reasonable response if you keep on trying to belittle everyone on this site.

The fact that Phillie fans are on this blog is great. The personal attacks from both ends of this rivalry are getting old, and seriously why bother?

    More logic, less bickering.

  115. CitizenSnips says:

“You know what? I sorta have to because people like you refuse to acknowledge that fact, and you also refuse to admit that our team has proven nothing.

Like most Mets fans, you’re acting too big and bad in relation to how little the team has done

    WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?”

Ok. Give me one example where I said the Mets have proven something. I mean since I’m out there acting like this team is “big and bad” it shouldn’t be too hard, right?

  116. rustyjr says:

agreed citizen hey we kid but when some of the guys around here ( furi fiya flight et/al) continue to be obnoxious and cut and paste the same aruments it gets a lttle tedious to say the least - hey we are allowed to have differing opinions thats what distinguishes us from the herd but damn the total negativity sometimes man …
