Quote: I Don’t Like Those Guys

by Regis Courtemanche

In an article for Newsday, David Wright responds to the Phillies’ recent jabs at the Mets.

Wright, as quoted by David Lennon:

“I don’t like those guys. I know they don’t like us. There are guys that I respect on that team. I respect them, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that I’m going to be friends with them.”

“As far as the Phillies winning, I’m not bitter about it.  I’m disappointed that we didn’t cash in on the opportunity to get into the playoffs. It’s something where they deserve it.”

…the consumate professional…i’m more diappointed that the Mets failed to make the playoffs than i am upset the phillies won as well…

How long before Rollins responds to this and tries to make it into some legitimate threat?

metsflip November 2, 2008 at 7:43 pm

No not Rollins, Victorino for sure

NOLA Heat November 3, 2008 at 2:36 am

Forget Jimmy Rollins, had the Mets been in the phillies position someone like Pedro would have said the same thing, and the reality is that he is 100% correct about the Mets(and as sad as it is to say, that makes two years in a row that Jimmy Rollins seems to know the Mets better then anyone else). The fact is that David Wright has been forced into being the leader and face of this franchise which is now synonymous with pathetically collapsing when it counts. He’s a great talent but he is the farthest thing from a leader and should not be the face of the franchise. Yet none of the other stars seem to care(i.e. Beltran) or can speak English well enough to be quoted on the NY evening news channels(i.e. Reyes). So until the Mets bring in another everyday player who can preform on the field and more importantly in the clubhouse this probably won’t be the last heartbreaking season we have to endure.

FlightFromHouston November 3, 2008 at 9:34 am

had the mets been in the phillies position, the phillies would be the furthest thing from anyones mind … the ONLY silver lining we can take out of the past season is that the phillies care moe about us than we do about them.

rustyjr November 2, 2008 at 3:04 pm

rollins deserves some high & inside heat from someone on our staff put him back in his place

darkstar73 November 2, 2008 at 3:25 pm

put him back in his place? Where’s that? on a float going down broad street in philly celebrating a world series title? Get real people, ignore this stuff, they won, get over it.

metsfan1 November 2, 2008 at 3:04 pm

It is nice to see that Wright cares but it would be nicer to see him hit in the clutch down the stretch. He was terrible in September.

rustyjr November 2, 2008 at 3:06 pm

metsfan he batted over 300 in sept – just not when it mattered most – i can’t crucify him if the pen did it’s job we wouldn’t be discussing this right now

JefJarrett November 2, 2008 at 3:09 pm

Well, that’s why it is a team game. If Wright hit well in close/late situations it wouldn’t be an issue. If the bullpen did their job, then it wouldn’t be an issue. If Reyes got a few more hits, it wouldn’t be an issue. You can easily point at one singular thing to say if that changed…….then the Mets would have been in the playoffs…….but baseball is a game of failure…..a team picks each other’s failures up. This team couldn’t get it done.

CitizenSnips November 2, 2008 at 3:12 pm

Exactly. I love how Wright gets crucified for not bringing home Murphy from 3rd in that one game but what about Delgado and Beltran? They had chances too.

rustyjr November 2, 2008 at 3:13 pm

jef (wheres the roadie lol) look david’d bat was alive in the braves game the pen blew – last week of season same with that cubs game sometimes a player doesnt come through thats all there is too it did keith hernandez always have the game winning rbi when it counted most what about jeter or mike schmidt or even piazza – im sure the answer is no or all teams would be undefeated

rustyjr November 2, 2008 at 3:14 pm

well snips they walked both carlos’s rememeber?

Tidewater November 2, 2008 at 3:17 pm

Wright deserved that blame. All he had to do was 1) not strike out, and 2) Not pop out. Virtually anything else brings that run home.

That was a clazzic failure right there. Huge.

rustyjr November 2, 2008 at 3:18 pm

did’t he ground out to the 2b?

losmets7 November 2, 2008 at 10:05 pm

Reyes got over 200 hits. If someone needed a few more hits, it was not him.

jimyager November 3, 2008 at 11:52 am

IF Delgado had hit in May, June and July then Wright and the Pen would not be an isuse right now either.

1993Mets November 2, 2008 at 3:15 pm

Oh Good Lord! Can you stop it with this Phillies stuff? They won the world series, get over it! Just worry about the Mets and what they can do to get into the playoffs next year!

rustyjr November 2, 2008 at 3:17 pm

we are over it the fillie faithful aint lol

ae37jr November 2, 2008 at 3:16 pm

Wright is just saying the right things. Ryan Howard and him and him are actually good friends off the field.

rustyjr November 2, 2008 at 3:18 pm

and u r implying what – that david couldn’t give 2 craps?

ae37jr November 2, 2008 at 3:25 pm

Just saying his comments are just cliches. You hear it in every interview. You know what he is going to say before he says it. He was trained well.

I’m not implying that he doesn’t care(not sure where you got that from). Just saying that his comments are not worthy of a post here. What did you expect him to say…that he is happy for them?

rustyjr November 2, 2008 at 3:42 pm

whats a bigger cliche we battled by art howe the champagne will taste even sweeter by wave em home willie or I don’t like those guys. I know they don’t like us. There are guys that I respect on that team. I respect them, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that I’m going to be friends with them by our future captain?

1993Mets November 2, 2008 at 3:27 pm

I think some Mets fans are over it but Metsblog sure isn’t! I can’t wait until Metsblog stops covering this Phillies stuff. It seems that Metsblog (Cerrone and friends, not most posters here) has an inferiority complex and has to harp on anything negative about the Phillies to make themselves feel better about the Mets not making the playoffs.

darkstar73 November 2, 2008 at 3:56 pm

it is their job after all, i mean, if i wrote a blog about a sports team, and that was my life, I would have an inferiority complex about a lot of things in life.

rustyjr November 2, 2008 at 3:57 pm

rustyjr November 2, 2008 at 3:48 pm

i said that on many occasion and if utley stands over the plate aim for his udders

Hit The Weights Zeile November 2, 2008 at 7:48 pm

I wish that would happen and i can think of a couple of other guys who need one too (hanley ramirez, elijah dukes, kelly johnson). but honestly and im not just blaming the mets here, that kind of thing just doesnt happen all that much anymore. there are literally a handful of pitchers nowadays that would do that and we dont have them.

starlitmetsfan November 3, 2008 at 1:57 am

get pelf. he’d do it. there was that one with dukes, who is kind of certifiably nuts so i can’t say he didn’t deserve it. i think pelf could send a message if he really wanted to. i mean the guy is 6′7″. you don’t fight people you can’t look in the eye. it was funny watching ross yell at pelf considering pelf has 8 inches and like 50 lbs over him. i personally would not want to make the big man angry. he should teach the phils a lesson in humility. =)

Jkon617 November 2, 2008 at 4:01 pm

That comment is a facade. Nothing irks Mets fans more than the sight of the Phillies, your rival, winning the World Series, ESPECIALLY when it could’ve been you. Every player dreams of a World Series ring. Yes, he is probably very disappointed that they didn’t make the playoffs, but who’s fault is that when you control your own fate?

But after the past 2 seasons you are not bitter? No fire burning inside you? No competitive edge that the team that hates you the most have made you look foolish two years in a row and you are just disappointed?

The Phillies do deserve all the credit in the world as much as it kills me to say it.

The fact is everyone in the National League hates the Mets and until Wright, who is the vocal leader in the locker room, says it (on or off the field) that the Mets are tired of being pushed around and show some fire, they will continue to squander in the league. You can talk about signing and trading players to where the Mets need the help, but until they play like they REALLY want to win, the Mets will be lucky to have Game 162 matter.

Hit The Weights Zeile November 2, 2008 at 7:54 pm

you do make a pretty good point. bc honestly if the mets won the WS and say the phils were in our exact shoes right now you know rollins wouldve said they were bitter and wanted to take it to us next year. i wouldve loved if wright said they were bitter or angry or something, hes a PC type guy and we just have to get used to it i guess.

BBmetsfreak36 November 2, 2008 at 4:08 pm

admiralwright November 2, 2008 at 4:23 pm

haven’t posted in a while.

obviously disappointing to miss the playoffs again and watch the phils won.

however, to get on wright for not saying he’s bitter, etc. is ridiculous. if he says he’s jealous, bitter, etc. it only serves to make rollins that much happier. yea rollins won a title, and i congratulate him on single handedly creating a rivalry, however, the fact that they act like reyes is a punk and a loudmouth is laughable.

with regard to david’s RISP numbers, he’s getting way to much flack. in 07 he hit roughly around 300 in any category pertaining to RISP, 2 outs RISP, or men on.

his numbers in 2006 were out of sight in that regard – 365 with RISP, 358 2 outs RISP. so yea, he struggled in that aspect in 2008, but he is not the problem

he’s the cornerstone moving forward and say what you want, if this team had 25 guys with his mentality, i have no doubts they would be unstoppable. we don’t need 25 guys with his talent, we just need the mind set.

rustyjr November 2, 2008 at 4:27 pm

well u know admiril some of the knee-jerk fans hear will believe anything fatcessa will force feed them

phillyhater November 2, 2008 at 4:43 pm

can you imagine if Wright hit around .300 with risp? I think his rbi totals would’ve been approaching the 160 territory. What did he hit, like .230 something? and he still drove in 126 runs? That blows my mind.

rustyjr November 2, 2008 at 4:50 pm

yeah i know

Bogar November 2, 2008 at 4:28 pm

When you’re reduced to calling for head hunting by your pitchers you know the other team is in your head.

If the Mets didn’t try to bean Rollins last year, what makes anyone think they’re going to do it in the next year after the latest 2nd place finish?

It’s probably better to root for the results on the scoreboard, not some angry, bitter call to throw balls at the other guy.

rustyjr November 2, 2008 at 4:29 pm

u mean like yankee fans with the sox?

kingman 26 November 2, 2008 at 4:29 pm

LOL!!

Thanks for the fact-based post, but to the small contingent of Wright-bashers, I wish you the best of luck, my apparently sane and fact-appreciating friend!

I posted all of Wright’s career RISP, late/close, estra innings, etc numbers for his career, all of which are excellent, on the last weekend of the regular season, and Gina wisely told me “You are wasting your breath.”

Don’t you know that a career of four-plus years with excellent stats in all “clutch” categories are overridden by ONE at-bat?

Or you will soon be told with mind-numbing repetition…..but it is good to have another reasonable, sane mind on board….

kingman 26 November 2, 2008 at 4:30 pm

Meant this as a response to the Admiral…I guess the Goodfellas stuff got me giddy and distracted….

Cactus November 2, 2008 at 5:03 pm

Why is metsblog so obsessed with the phillies?

kingman 26 November 2, 2008 at 5:08 pm

Because they are our closest rivals and they just won the World Series? Because they barely beat us to win the division two years in a row? Because we play them 18 times a year in the regular season? Because rivalries are an essential part of sports and this one has finally blossomed the last two years?

Because their troll fans cannot stay off of Metsblog? Because their players, fans and even announcers have a comical lack of self-esteem and cannot stop mentioning the Mets even AFTER winning the World Series?

Just a few thoughts….

Has spring training started yet??

Cactus November 2, 2008 at 7:03 pm

every post is about the phillies, it seems like metsblog has an inferiority complex to me. i could care less about the phillies or some perceived rivalry.

loqiel November 3, 2008 at 1:33 am

I don’t want Spring Training to start yet. I want to relish this World Series championship. The first day of the season is going to be the equivalent of waking up in the morning after a threesome with the Playmates of the Month for September and October, only they’re still asleep and I’m pounding the snooze button every nine minutes because I don’t want it to end.

BullpenHelp November 2, 2008 at 5:15 pm

Three of the last four posts are about the Phillies.

And they’re obsessed with us?

nydre78 November 2, 2008 at 5:17 pm

Yeah, theyre mostly about the Phillies organization mocking us. Dont care about that?

Cactus November 2, 2008 at 7:04 pm

no…put a fastball in someone’s ear. that puts an end to that.

metsfan227 November 2, 2008 at 5:17 pm

Huh…the last four post are about:

1. David Wright
2. El Duque
3. The Phillies being obsessed with the Mets
4. The dugout being ripped out of Shea

BullpenHelp November 2, 2008 at 6:34 pm

Sorry, three out of five, missed the El Duque post.

1. David Wright talking about the Phillies
2. El Duque
3. The Phillies talking about the Mets
4. The dugout being ripped out of Shea
5. Pat Burrel

And there’s been lots more recently.

Let’s face it… the obsession is mutual. It’s a rivalry. Let’s not be naive and believe it’s one sided.

The problem is that they get to run our face in it right now. So let’s stop talking and start winning. That’s the only way to shut them up. Since Rollins declared the Phils the team to beat… we haven’t won jack sh-!t.

metsfan227 November 2, 2008 at 7:52 pm

I guess I just see this a little differently(not that I would have a problem if there were less posts that used the word Phillies.)

Leaving aside the El Duque and Shea dugout posts and agreeing that I don’t see any value nor have any interest in the Pat Burrell post, I see this:

1. Yes, David Wright was talking about the Phillies because he was asked about the Phillies. And of course he was going to be asked about the Phillies because they just won the WS. He was doing a personal appearance and the media was there. Sure, they could have asked him what players the Mets should be targeting this off-season or how they could fix the bullpen or even what he had for dinner the night before. But, let’s face it, no one cares about any of those things. Asking him about how he feels about the Phillies winning the WS is pretty much the only thing he can talk abut right now that will make any type of news story.

But I still see this as a *Mets story.* He plays for the Mets and this is a story about a Mets player giving his opinion about current events in baseball. One of the things that USED to be nice about Metsblog was that they linked to all Mets stories in the papers, etc. Sadly, they don’t really do this that much anymore, but that ’s another topic altogether.

The story about the Phillies being *obsessed* with the Mets is also a Mets story, to me. These stories were on all the beat writers blogs too as this is a story about Phillies players(or fans) making comments about the Mets. If the Mets are heavily referenced, I think it’s a Mets story.

As I said, I agree about the Pat Burrell post…until he signs with the Mets or is in HEAVY negotiations with them, I don’t really care what’s going on with him and see no value in it being posted here.

nydre78 November 2, 2008 at 5:20 pm

This is why when the Mets win the world series, at the rally David Wright will conduct himself a little classier than someone like Chase Utley.

TobeRinkler November 2, 2008 at 7:19 pm

Yes, they won, congrats to them. But they did go 7-11 against the mets, so maybe the title still seems bittersweet to them, underachievers that they are.

JefJarrett November 2, 2008 at 7:29 pm

I’d accept going 0-18 against my hated rivals every season if it means winning the world series. Even bringing up how the Mets won the season series is silly……….what position would you rather be in?

loqiel November 3, 2008 at 1:37 am

I hear the Mets hired a descendant of Betsy Ross to sew the 11-7 head-to-head banner for 2008 so they can raise a flag too when Citi opens.

stickguy November 2, 2008 at 7:28 pm

Man, has the off season ended yet (wait, it hasn’t really sarted?)

The phils posts will die out. Just residual to the WS, and nothing else to talk about. Soon as the hot stove really starts, there will be something else to post about.

And please, no more nonsense about “the league hates the ets” If anything, it should be the Phils now! And anyway, who cares? It is about talent. Normally, the team with the most wins!

In the mets case, that means the pen. You tend to overlook the fact that, for the pen to blow a bunch of games down the stretch, THE METS HAD TO HAVE LATE LEADS IN ALL THOSE GAMES!

Or did the hate only kick in around the 8th inning?

Wait, maybe if the Mets hated the Marlins (have to imagine they do at this point!), would that cancel out the Marlins hating the MEts?

Lots of fans/posters want to find mythical reasons they didn’t win, when the real reason was they didn’t have the talent (mostly the pen) down the stretch. Fix that, and all the back targets, and league hating, becomes irrelevant.

Now, lets all get back to fantasy trades and arguing about which 10 FAs to sign!

c.1970 November 2, 2008 at 9:30 pm

I’d rather root for a Mets team that had 25 David Wrights and not make the playoffs than root for a team that won a Championship and showed no grace, gratitude, or cl.ass. “Winners” change from year to year. History forgets many of them. A decent human being is rarely forgotten by those he touches.

rustyjr November 2, 2008 at 10:22 pm

thiis all shall change next week at the gm meetings in cali

LGNYM November 2, 2008 at 9:50 pm

David said exactly what he should have said. Players on a given team, aren’t supposed to like other teams. The idea floated around lately that other teams not liking the Mets is some unique, novel thing is ridiculous. David’s comments seem to be in response to questions about that nonsense. I’d much rather him being saying something along the lines of ‘of course they don’t like us, we don’t like them either’ than whining and crying about how other teams not liking them is unfair and the reason they aren’t in the playoffs.

As far as his comments about the Phillies winning, I don’t see a problem with that either. As a fan, it pisses me off that the Phillies won, but as far as Mets players go, they should be just as pissed off at themselves for not getting the job done and not making the playoffs regardless of who wins the WS.

metz1 November 2, 2008 at 10:44 pm

yknow what? these mets need to fire up for 2009. the 86 mets had a lot more fire in their veins.remember ray knight and eric davis going at it?

stickguy November 3, 2008 at 8:44 am

lots of fire, and they darned near lost 2 different series that year in the PS, one entirely due to a starting pitcher (mike Scott) shutting them down.

The 88 team had pelnty of fire and heart too (and tons of talent), and lost to Orel Heirsheiser. ANd a dumb non-move by Davy to not pull doc, or maybe doc throwing a hittable pitch, yet I digress.

since1963 November 2, 2008 at 11:20 pm

What the Mets missed this past season wasn’t only statistical (RISP performance, saves, etc.). It was fire. I don’t mean fire as in screaming or carrying on or doing dances. I mean playing like you mean it. Remember how Church got his first concussion? It seemed at the time as if he was the only player who really hustled. That changed after a while, of course, but for much of the year, they were a low-key club, especially under Willie. David doesn’t have to prove anything to me, though I’d have been just as happy if he’d driven in that run (and a few others). Johan doesn’t have to prove anything, either–how many other pitchers on the staff, especially the relievers, actually wanted the ball?

nyj0126 November 3, 2008 at 1:12 am

Who really cares what David Wright says? He’s a talking puppet. He’s a toy of the media. He has to talk. You think he wants to talk when they ask him questions? He’s like an answering machine. ”Well we just need to hit the ball better.” Yeah, we know that David. We don’t want to hear it. We want to see it. David did his job for the most part even if he wasn’t as clutch as he could have been. It’s the bullpen who trashed our season and I respect Beltran much more for bringing up the issue publicly.

KingWright November 3, 2008 at 1:40 am

But when there’s nobody to talk, there’s a problem with that too. We finally have a face for the media and it’s still not good enough.

theNYmetz November 3, 2008 at 2:31 am

What David’s doing is what you need to do in New York.

You start saying something you shouldn’t, it becomes an unnecessary problem for the team, and they shift their focus somewhere where it shouldn’t be. They shouldn’t have to worry about being accountable for something they said that may provoke speculation, they should just do what they have to do to get the proper worth ethic and mentality needed for the upcoming season.

And now for an incredibly cheesy remark

Everyone on this team should learn from David and “Say the Wright Thing”

Agees Catch November 3, 2008 at 8:30 am

I think Wright has a healthy attitude. 2009 will redemptive.

Would anyone trade Neise for Saltalamacchia? I can’t believe how deep the rangers are.

stickguy November 3, 2008 at 8:49 am

probably, if you think he has a future at catcher. Of course they need a 1B in 2009 (if not 2008) too, but that is easier to fill.

stickguy November 3, 2008 at 8:48 am

For all the people obsessed with the Phils obsession, be glad to know that the city has pretty much moved on already.

I listen to the news radio station in the AM for the traffic (and to catch up on the other news of course!), and in sports, the only phils reference was Amaro likely getting the Gm job.

Everything now is Iggles (who I detest, along with their fans, way more than the Phils or their psuedo fans!). And Penn State will get a slice of the action.

So, 2008 is over, they get their banner, but every team is back to 0-0 heading into the off season. Let 2009 officially begin!

Cause what you did last year, is like so last year. Start 0-5 and the the Phils will get bood anyway. That I can guarantee.

Fregosi November 3, 2008 at 11:49 am

stick, I don’t know what you are talking about moving on. The entire area is still red pinstripes and they are barely talking about the Eagles win yesterday. The entire morning sports radio was still all Phillies.

darkstar73 November 2, 2008 at 3:47 pm

yes, jimmy rollins, a professional baseball player who just won a world series title, has an mvp, is more of a baby than say, you are. Way to insult someone totally erroneously and who is probably in a position in life that you are quite envious of. Bravo.

we all know the mets are going to use citifield instead of the product on the field to sell tickets for the foreseeable future. next year will be another 80 something win season that ends up short of the playoffs. and omar might get another extension after that since he does his job to perfection – be a front man for the wilpons, pretend that he really is the one making all the decisions, and provide meaningful games in september.

It was ONE at bat. One f–kin plate appearance. Church and Castro both had opportunities to get Murphy in, and neither of them did. Get over it, he’s still a da-mn good player, and any replacement for him would be worse.

Wow an SI poll?? Now I’m convinced… Erm, in one of those polls, Big Ben and Eli were both found to be more overrated than Romo, and what do Eli and Ben have over Romo???? Rings. Those polls are dumb.

Well let’s see why Piniella went after Wright… it couldn’t possibly have anything to do with a guy who went bats*it insane over the last 2 months, could it?

Spouting the same cliches is better than saying nothing at all.

GET A CLUE you biased, dimwit moron.
