Quote: I Don’t Like Those Guys
By Regis Courtemanche - Nov 2, 2008 2:49 pm

In an article for Newsday, David Wright responds to the Phillies’ recent jabs at the Mets.

Wright, as quoted by David Lennon:

“I don’t like those guys. I know they don’t like us. There are guys that I respect on that team. I respect them, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that I’m going to be friends with them.”

“As far as the Phillies winning, I’m not bitter about it.  I’m disappointed that we didn’t cash in on the opportunity to get into the playoffs. It’s something where they deserve it.”

…the consumate professional…i’m more diappointed that the Mets failed to make the playoffs than i am upset the phillies won as well…

How long before Rollins responds to this and tries to make it into some legitimate threat?

    • metsflip says:

No not Rollins, Victorino for sure

    • NOLA Heat says:

Forget Jimmy Rollins, had the Mets been in the phillies position someone like Pedro would have said the same thing, and the reality is that he is 100% correct about the Mets(and as sad as it is to say, that makes two years in a row that Jimmy Rollins seems to know the Mets better then anyone else). The fact is that David Wright has been forced into being the leader and face of this franchise which is now synonymous with pathetically collapsing when it counts. He’s a great talent but he is the farthest thing from a leader and should not be the face of the franchise. Yet none of the other stars seem to care(i.e. Beltran) or can speak English well enough to be quoted on the NY evening news channels(i.e. Reyes). So until the Mets bring in another everyday player who can preform on the field and more importantly in the clubhouse this probably won’t be the last heartbreaking season we have to endure.

      • FlightFromHouston says:

had the mets been in the phillies position, the phillies would be the furthest thing from anyones mind … the ONLY silver lining we can take out of the past season is that the phillies care moe about us than we do about them.

  2. rustyjr says:

rollins deserves some high & inside heat from someone on our staff put him back in his place

    • darkstar73 says:

put him back in his place? Where’s that? on a float going down broad street in philly celebrating a world series title? Get real people, ignore this stuff, they won, get over it.

  3. metsfan1 says:

It is nice to see that Wright cares but it would be nicer to see him hit in the clutch down the stretch. He was terrible in September.

    • rustyjr says:

metsfan he batted over 300 in sept - just not when it mattered most - i can’t crucify him if the pen did it’s job we wouldn’t be discussing this right now

      • JefJarrett says:

Well, that’s why it is a team game. If Wright hit well in close/late situations it wouldn’t be an issue. If the bullpen did their job, then it wouldn’t be an issue. If Reyes got a few more hits, it wouldn’t be an issue. You can easily point at one singular thing to say if that changed…….then the Mets would have been in the playoffs…….but baseball is a game of failure…..a team picks each other’s failures up. This team couldn’t get it done.

      • jimyager says:

IF Delgado had hit in May, June and July then Wright and the Pen would not be an isuse right now either.

  4. 1993Mets says:

Oh Good Lord! Can you stop it with this Phillies stuff? They won the world series, get over it! Just worry about the Mets and what they can do to get into the playoffs next year!

  5. ae37jr says:

Wright is just saying the right things. Ryan Howard and him and him are actually good friends off the field.

    • rustyjr says:

      and u r implying what - that david couldn’t give 2 craps?

      • ae37jr says:

Just saying his comments are just cliches. You hear it in every interview. You know what he is going to say before he says it. He was trained well.

I’m not implying that he doesn’t care(not sure where you got that from). Just saying that his comments are not worthy of a post here. What did you expect him to say…that he is happy for them?

        • rustyjr says:

whats a bigger cliche we battled by art howe the champagne will taste even sweeter by wave em home willie or I don’t like those guys. I know they don’t like us. There are guys that I respect on that team. I respect them, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that I’m going to be friends with them by our future captain?

  6. 1993Mets says:

I think some Mets fans are over it but Metsblog sure isn’t! I can’t wait until Metsblog stops covering this Phillies stuff. It seems that Metsblog (Cerrone and friends, not most posters here) has an inferiority complex and has to harp on anything negative about the Phillies to make themselves feel better about the Mets not making the playoffs.

  7. HOFMets57 says:

It’s just Wright trying to pacify the voracious blood-thirsty public/media. Just because he says it, doesn’t mean he means it. He knows as well as anyone what kind of city New York is…

  8. Airfeet says:

Can we please get someone exciting to add to our roster….PLEASE

  9. dr. help says:

how long before loser, unemployed, basement living fan(s) come here and continue beating their chests.

  10. bkfitz says:

First game against the Phillies I want to see the Met pitcher throw over Rollins’ head.

    • rustyjr says:

i said that on many occasion and if utley stands over the plate aim for his udders

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

I wish that would happen and i can think of a couple of other guys who need one too (hanley ramirez, elijah dukes, kelly johnson). but honestly and im not just blaming the mets here, that kind of thing just doesnt happen all that much anymore. there are literally a handful of pitchers nowadays that would do that and we dont have them.

      • starlitmetsfan says:

get pelf. he’d do it. there was that one with dukes, who is kind of certifiably nuts so i can’t say he didn’t deserve it. i think pelf could send a message if he really wanted to. i mean the guy is 6′7″. you don’t fight people you can’t look in the eye. it was funny watching ross yell at pelf considering pelf has 8 inches and like 50 lbs over him. i personally would not want to make the big man angry. he should teach the phils a lesson in humility. =)

  11. Jkon617 says:

That comment is a facade. Nothing irks Mets fans more than the sight of the Phillies, your rival, winning the World Series, ESPECIALLY when it could’ve been you. Every player dreams of a World Series ring. Yes, he is probably very disappointed that they didn’t make the playoffs, but who’s fault is that when you control your own fate?

But after the past 2 seasons you are not bitter? No fire burning inside you? No competitive edge that the team that hates you the most have made you look foolish two years in a row and you are just disappointed?

The Phillies do deserve all the credit in the world as much as it kills me to say it.

The fact is everyone in the National League hates the Mets and until Wright, who is the vocal leader in the locker room, says it (on or off the field) that the Mets are tired of being pushed around and show some fire, they will continue to squander in the league. You can talk about signing and trading players to where the Mets need the help, but until they play like they REALLY want to win, the Mets will be lucky to have Game 162 matter.

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

you do make a pretty good point. bc honestly if the mets won the WS and say the phils were in our exact shoes right now you know rollins wouldve said they were bitter and wanted to take it to us next year. i wouldve loved if wright said they were bitter or angry or something, hes a PC type guy and we just have to get used to it i guess.

  12. BBmetsfreak36 says:

I want to put jimmy rollins in a human size blender.

  13. rustyjr says:

Bring back lee mazilli - he will wack every one of those fillies - him and pete falcone art shamsky will do their taxes lol

  14. writingitall says:

Hey spelling bee ace: consummate is spelled with two “M”s

    GEEZ….

  15. admiralwright says:

    haven’t posted in a while.

obviously disappointing to miss the playoffs again and watch the phils won.

however, to get on wright for not saying he’s bitter, etc. is ridiculous. if he says he’s jealous, bitter, etc. it only serves to make rollins that much happier. yea rollins won a title, and i congratulate him on single handedly creating a rivalry, however, the fact that they act like reyes is a punk and a loudmouth is laughable.

with regard to david’s RISP numbers, he’s getting way to much flack. in 07 he hit roughly around 300 in any category pertaining to RISP, 2 outs RISP, or men on.

his numbers in 2006 were out of sight in that regard - 365 with RISP, 358 2 outs RISP. so yea, he struggled in that aspect in 2008, but he is not the problem

he’s the cornerstone moving forward and say what you want, if this team had 25 guys with his mentality, i have no doubts they would be unstoppable. we don’t need 25 guys with his talent, we just need the mind set.

  16. Bogar says:

When you’re reduced to calling for head hunting by your pitchers you know the other team is in your head.

If the Mets didn’t try to bean Rollins last year, what makes anyone think they’re going to do it in the next year after the latest 2nd place finish?

It’s probably better to root for the results on the scoreboard, not some angry, bitter call to throw balls at the other guy.

  17. kingman 26 says:

    LOL!!

Thanks for the fact-based post, but to the small contingent of Wright-bashers, I wish you the best of luck, my apparently sane and fact-appreciating friend!

I posted all of Wright’s career RISP, late/close, estra innings, etc numbers for his career, all of which are excellent, on the last weekend of the regular season, and Gina wisely told me “You are wasting your breath.”

Don’t you know that a career of four-plus years with excellent stats in all “clutch” categories are overridden by ONE at-bat?

Or you will soon be told with mind-numbing repetition…..but it is good to have another reasonable, sane mind on board….
