Blog: Philly, Fix My Car

November 3, 2008 at 14:53 pm · 86 comments

by Matthew Cerrone

The night the Phillies won the World Series, fans of the team flipped over Ted’s car – and he has since started a blog, at Philly, Fix My Car, to help raise money to either have the vehicle fixed or replaced.

way to stay classy, Philadelphia…

So far, Ted has raised $2,750.

i bet it was the Philly Phanatic…i blame him for everything

It was obviously the magic number’s fault

Mr. Bananagrabber November 3, 2008 at 4:23 pm

It was obviously Omar’s fault.

Fire Omar!

Lidge=Mitch Williams November 3, 2008 at 4:28 pm

the magic number? hahha! Loving it! lol

racemccloud November 3, 2008 at 3:05 pm

I have never understood that mentality (and I’m not picking on Philly here; this happens in cities across the world.) “My team won a championship! Time to commit major felonious property damage!”

So stupid… some Philly radio or TV station should get this guy a new car. Great PR.

SovereignRonnie November 3, 2008 at 3:13 pm

What baffles me is not that these people commit major felonious property damage, it’s that they then go right up to the first cell phone or video camera they see and yell “WHOOOOOOO!” thereby cementing their arrest warrant once they are identified.

dave27 November 3, 2008 at 4:14 pm

Doesn’t happen in New York.

JoseGayes November 3, 2008 at 4:39 pm

your an idiot.

Joe Bacci November 3, 2008 at 4:47 pm

i think you mean “you’re” an idiot. Now you feel foolish.

racemccloud November 3, 2008 at 3:07 pm

Or the Phillies could do it. In no way are the liable here, and in no way should anyone think they SHOULD do it, but that would be a very cool move on their part.

Again, I don’t think they have to, or that they should. And I would not think less of the organization if they don’t. But I’d think more of them if they did.

BiffBenson November 3, 2008 at 3:22 pm

i think Jose Reyes or David Wright should buy the guy a new car…that would be awesome

JoseGayes November 3, 2008 at 4:40 pm

um, Jose Gayes is to busy reading his press clippings. David Wright is trying to get Erin Andrews back.

racemccloud November 3, 2008 at 5:24 pm

“Jose Gayes”? Seriously? Is that the best you can do?

Wright88 November 3, 2008 at 6:25 pm

so clever

Cactus November 3, 2008 at 3:09 pm

Metsblog’s obsession continues…

Matthew Cerrone November 3, 2008 at 3:10 pm

Or, I’m trying to pop this guy’s blog, so maybe he can help raise a few more bucks…

Just a thought.

Alban November 3, 2008 at 3:29 pm

Just curious, did you know that this guy was a Philly fan?

JoseGayes November 3, 2008 at 4:42 pm

Yeah, but you didn’t miss the opporitunity to throw a jab in on Phillies fans.

kingman 26 November 3, 2008 at 3:12 pm

As does your obsession with mentioning it Cactus…again and again and again.

Read what Matt says….it kind of makes sense.

Sainthood awaits Cerrone for what he gives us and what he must deal with on a daily basis…..

Cactus November 3, 2008 at 3:44 pm

It would be hard to mention it over and over if there wasn’t Phillies-related posts over and over…

Wright88 November 3, 2008 at 6:25 pm

Why even bother coming to a mets blog.

MetsFan4Decades November 3, 2008 at 3:17 pm

And what obsession would that be, ace?

Just goes to prove the point the Phillies fans are the worst in the ML. Where else would you hear 45000 + fans – right after winning the WS – boo the Rays as they asked to give a hand for their incredible season.

If the shoe fits….

Phillies might have deserved that WS win they pulled out – their fans however deserved squat.

JoseGayes November 3, 2008 at 6:12 pm

Yeah, New York fans are so much better.

nyj0126 November 3, 2008 at 3:16 pm

Isn’t that what insurance is for? lol It doesn’t matter what team I’m rooting for. You shouldn’t have your car in Philly on the night of the WS lol If you have NY plates, you really shouldn’t. You’re practically asking for it to be destroyed. I hope you do raise the money though. Good luck lol

starz31 November 3, 2008 at 3:20 pm

they guy had Penn. plates.

iamatwork November 3, 2008 at 3:50 pm

PA has exceedingly lax insurance laws

and no motorcycle helmet laws (their current governor helped repeal them).

There's Always '09 November 3, 2008 at 4:08 pm

Wow…you think Bill Cowher voted for Ed Rendel for another term after Roethlisberger (every time I see that name I can’t stop thinking Rowengartner or Gardenhoser as Danny Glover called him) crashed?

bennyagbayani November 3, 2008 at 4:49 pm

Haha nice reference. My personal favorite was Runamucker

starz31 November 3, 2008 at 3:16 pm

good riddance…i feel bad for the guy but it could be alot worse.

i was here in Boston in 2004 and 2005(patriots and red sox) when alot more than one car was flipped and in the end one student was killed by the cops.

ravi3 November 3, 2008 at 3:30 pm

I was there too…insanity.

starz31 November 3, 2008 at 3:44 pm

from what i remember…when the sox when the W.S. in 04 it was very peaceful of a celebration…it was madness but everyone was enjoying it…while it was when they beat the yankees the series before that they went crazy and thats when the student was killed. the patriots celebrations were out of control as well…but when the sox actually won it…the crowd did behave its self for the most part, although that may be a result of the girl dying a week b4.

starz31 November 3, 2008 at 3:46 pm

either way…b/c of it…they had thousands of riot cops ready this past super bowl…and uh oh…18-1…that was a very enjoyable evening…just watching all the cops twittling their thumbs b/c there was NO ONE in the streets.

There's Always '09 November 3, 2008 at 4:11 pm

I was in Arizona (as a Giants fan) and was fortunate enough to attend the game. Just a few thoughts:

-at no point after the game during the celebration did:
(a) the Eagles cross my mind;
(b) the Cowboys cross my mind;
(c) the Redskins cross my mind;
(d) the thought of destroyign anything in the city cross my mind.

I just don’t understand the mentality. Why do people feel the need to be idiots when their team wins? Is it to prove that they are a roughneck city? Gimme a break. Philly is a joke.

iamatwork November 3, 2008 at 3:52 pm

it’s a lot of fun to spell a lot correctly.

starz31 November 3, 2008 at 4:08 pm

or incorrectly?

SovereignRonnie November 3, 2008 at 3:19 pm

Matt, is this Ted BERG’s car? Or just some random dude named Ted from Philly? I’d be much more likely to donate if it were the former.

starz31 November 3, 2008 at 3:22 pm

no its not ted berg…the guys blog lists his name as Ted Pason

and ted berg would be more intelligent than to leave his car near phillys park

ksuth November 3, 2008 at 3:26 pm

plus, if you didn’t know Ted Burg drives a candy red California Ferrari, just like this one:

images.starpulse.com/Photos/Previews/Ferris-Bueller-p04.jpg

Alban November 3, 2008 at 3:27 pm

Not only is it NOT Ted Berg, this Ted is a Philly fan.

His blog says,

“Hey Philly,

Remember when we just won the world series for the first time in 28 years? That was great! Then my car got flipped over and that wasn’t great.”

I feel bad for the guy, but not bad enough to support a Philly fan when his own co-fans demolish his car.

jzp86 November 3, 2008 at 3:20 pm

And you say that Phillies fans are obsessed with the Mets? Hah.

Must be a very slow day in the newsroom Cerrone.

Joe Bacci November 3, 2008 at 3:26 pm

The Phillie Phanatic is responsible for 93% of all cases of spousal abuse.

The other 7%? … yep, you guessed it.

Joe Bacci November 3, 2008 at 3:27 pm

The Phillie Phanatic causes cancer

starz31 November 3, 2008 at 3:39 pm

the other being?…brett myers? or Burgos?

Joe Bacci November 3, 2008 at 3:43 pm

Myers. The Burgos incident was all the Phanatics fault.

starz31 November 3, 2008 at 4:02 pm

you mean incidents…

MetalMet November 3, 2008 at 3:45 pm

Frank Stallone?

Joe Bacci November 3, 2008 at 4:36 pm

The Phillie Phanatic is responsible for war.

Joe Bacci November 3, 2008 at 4:36 pm

The Phillie Phanatic is responsible for suffering (see Ted).

KickedintheMetsiclesAgain November 3, 2008 at 3:27 pm

Hey matt:

Why dont you fix your word checker so that if a bad word is included the program returns the original message back to the user and highlights the offensive word.

Right now, the entire post just disappears. And the writer has to write a new post. And I am sure most of the time this is inadvertent.

KickedintheMetsiclesAgain November 3, 2008 at 3:29 pm

Matt:

or better yet, how about you review those posts that contained offensive words and then post them if they prove to be fine.

As many have told you before, there are many legit words (i.e. a-s-s-u-m-e or p-a-s-s) that when used cause the entire post to disappear.

Dirtysanchez November 3, 2008 at 3:33 pm

yea but sometimes you dont even use these words and your posts disappears..i have the same fustrations

starz31 November 3, 2008 at 3:40 pm

I doubt Matt would love to review every post to see if it can be posted…thats why he does automatically now.

As much as I hate it, your first post would be a good idea, i just dont know if theres a program for that or not.

starz31 November 3, 2008 at 3:41 pm

i dont hate your first post btw lol

ohboy November 3, 2008 at 3:28 pm

I think it would be great, and somewhat ironical, if Met fans were to replace this kids car through donations…

lets show them we’re not savages

dave27 November 3, 2008 at 4:19 pm

I could think of about 50,000 more worthwhile charities than some loser Philly fan who drove into the heart of the city to party with these jackals only to have them destroy his car.

Boo hoo…there are far more needy people and causes in the world.

chico November 3, 2008 at 3:32 pm

yeah, how about no. I’m not going to pay for their stupidity. That’s what I pay taxes for and last time I checked, they were high enough. Let the morons pay for it.

dave27 November 3, 2008 at 4:20 pm

I agree – except what part of this is coming out of your taxes again?

Zoe November 3, 2008 at 3:35 pm

are you kidding me? ew, the phillies fans who did this should be forced to buy ted a new car.

Hit The Weights Zeile November 3, 2008 at 3:55 pm

Im not giving this guy a cent. he is a phillies fan and this damage was a direct cause them winning. this recent phillies win has turned me into a very bitter person and I find it hard to sympathize with anyone who has seen their favorite team(s) win a title in their lifetime.

starz31 November 3, 2008 at 4:04 pm

well I saw (i mean, was alive) for the Mets win in 86…but i was only 6 months old at the time…does that count?

starz31 November 3, 2008 at 4:07 pm

and i have become very bitter at this recent win…I just don’t know what it is..The braves always beat us back in the 90’s, but they never beat us on their way to a title. And the yankees in 2000, well that was just different,

but the phillies, i just dont know what it is…I think its b/c we play 18 games a year and while they played well at the right time, its a tough pill to swallow knowing a team we can beat won it all…and we didnt even make the playoffs.

ugh…sorry for the rant

There's Always '09 November 3, 2008 at 4:21 pm

i have to agree. it was very tough watching them win. the mets simply just didn’t get it done down the stretch.

it was nearly impossible for me to think at the time, but looking back on it, i find it amazing that the mets were in the position they were in considering:

-alou was gone for the year
-church missed significant time
-luis castillo is on the team
-wagner missed the last 2-3 months
-delgado was invisible for the first 2 months
-the entire bullpen was dreadful
-pedro pitched for 2 months maybe and clearly not at full strength
-the managerial saga

basically, this team was in position to make the playoffs and maybe even win the division despite horrible performances or injuries by key personnel. unfortunately, omar has to make a ton of moves this offseason to position this team for the future. i just hope he can get it right.

steadyeddie November 3, 2008 at 4:17 pm

maybe George Foster would like to donate some of that ring money; how sad to sell such a wonderful momento….

HitTheSinkerBall November 3, 2008 at 4:19 pm

What is wrong with this?

Every time a major or minor (NY Saints Lacrosse, NY Dragon arena football, NY Liberty WNBA, the NY MLS Soccor team) championship is won in NY I go out and tip over cars … I mean come on, your home team winning championships and property damage go hand and hand.

How else are you supposed to celebrate your team winning the big game? It is the only way to go.

If the Mets even make the playoffs next season I plain at least tipping over every car on my block LETS GO METS IN 2009!!!

dave27 November 3, 2008 at 4:23 pm

Well this is how it was done in the late 70s and early 80s, so forgive the Philly fans for not knowing any different.

Totally random aside, but we should have seen this coming…Phillies won in ‘80 with #45 on the mound, and now in ‘08 with #54 on the mound. Fortunately there is no 3rd combination.

There's Always '09 November 3, 2008 at 4:24 pm

I agree with you whole-heartedly, except I feel like the Islanders should be included in those “( )”. And I’m an Islanders fan.

QnsNative1718 November 3, 2008 at 4:31 pm

haha.. Very funny and I dont know if you guys are kidding or not (Sarcasm Detector turned off on Mondays) but is this Ted guy really a Philly fan? Are you freakin kidding me? The same guy who wanted The Mets to fail and watch us, the fans, be humiliated… Youre asking me to give this guy a cent?

FlightFromHouston November 3, 2008 at 4:42 pm

how did they know whos car it was?

QnsNative1718 November 3, 2008 at 4:49 pm

Hey, Matt I know you’re trying to be Mr. Nice Guy, and whats right is right etc etc etc but you’re a pansy. You as a whole represent what the Mets are: Really nice guys who say the right thing and are gutless. Have you no pride? This is probably the same guy who I got into a bar fight with because I was wearing a Met shirt, the same guy who screamed at a 6 yr old kid for supporting the Mets at a game in Philly, the same guy who held up signs that said ” Mets = Choke” and you want us to ease his pain, for something that HIS fellow fans did to him??? Please, I respect myself too much. If Im coming off a little to harsh, just know that I drive past Shea Stadium ( I Reside in Flushing) every day and when I see that stadium, I think humiliation and the Philly fans who I detest that kicked us when we were down. Grow a pair!

1993Mets November 3, 2008 at 4:50 pm

And New York Mets fans wouldn’t have done something similar? This sort of thing could happen in any city with true excited sports fans. Metsblog needs to stop obsessing about the Phillies and worry about the Mets!

QnsNative1718 November 3, 2008 at 4:53 pm

Giants won the SB last yr and there was no mention of this. And you dont think the Giants defeating an underfeated tam in the SB wasnt something to get ecited about?

MrDudeAndStuff November 3, 2008 at 5:03 pm

Actually, there were riots in New York after the Giants won the Superbowl. Murray Hill was one of the key spots it happened.

There was also damage done and many arrests made during the Giants parade. There’s video of Giants fans completely destroying a cab by dancing on it, smashing windows, etc. It is available on Newsday’s website under the heading “Giants fans cause chaos at parade.”

This stuff happens in every city after championships.

foul bunt strikeout November 3, 2008 at 5:28 pm

mr dude is right

there was a video on newsday of people jumping on top of cars and kicking random objects on the street after the parade

mr dude – your thoughts on amaro jr and not arbuckle getting the GM title?

MrDudeAndStuff November 3, 2008 at 5:32 pm

Amaro was clearly chosen because he has been the main guy doing the negotiating and writing of contracts along with the numbers including money, years, bonus, etc.

Arbuckle is such a good draft and player development guy.

I guess their point of view is that they have the core established and it is plug and play from this point. Also, so many key players are arbitration eligible such as Howard, Hamels, Victorino, etc. Amaro is the guy to handle those discussions and contracts.

Personally, to me, it is a toss up. Either one can make a really top notch GM. I think Arbuckle may end up with a small market team to redevelop from the ground up, such as teams like Pittsburgh or Kansas City.

foul bunt strikeout November 3, 2008 at 5:36 pm

interesting

i feel a dollars and cents kind of executive is more important for a leageu with the salary cap – NFL or NBA.

I’d think Arbuckle clearly did a tremendous job with the farm system and player development that he should get the reins of the organziation…since it now proved that developing a farm system can lead you to a WS title

If arbuckle is unhappy I’d take him on the Mets over Minaya…if thats cool with you

MrDudeAndStuff November 3, 2008 at 5:40 pm

Arbuckle would be a far better GM then Minaya is, no offense, although I get the impression from here that Mets fans are displeased with Minaya to begin with. He really understands developing talent.

Arbuckle isn’t going to be taking any a.ssistant GM or scout jobs though. He resigned with clear intentions to make himself completely available with no ties considering the GM meetings starting up.

So unless Minaya is fired or resigns, I don’t see Arbuckle going to the Mets organization. He is gunning for a the top tier position with a ballclub, so with no vacancy, doubtful you’d see him.

MrDudeAndStuff November 3, 2008 at 5:42 pm

By the way, I do agree with you that dollars and cents type GMs are more important for sports with caps, something baseball obviously doesn’t have.

I probably would have rather seen Arbuckle, because Amaro has been somewhat of a “yes man” throughout his tenure. Then again, he had to be since he wasn’t the guy to make decisions. We’ll see how that goes now that he has the authority.

QnsNative1718 November 3, 2008 at 4:55 pm

Wow *undefeated team.

Bogar November 3, 2008 at 5:00 pm

I was beginning to think something was wrong with the site today. There wasn’t a Phillies post for part of the day.

Yes, the people who flipped the car were definitely baseball fans, and yes, Philly’s the only city where property damage has occurred after a championship.

rustyjr November 3, 2008 at 5:14 pm

ur missing the point teds car got wrecked by celebrating philies fan now he wants financial restitution – can’t blame him. im sure he would post the same thing if partying mets fans smashed up his car take it easy with the negativity man

Metshead1974 November 3, 2008 at 5:24 pm

Matt, you do a heck of a job on this website. However, get over the Phillies. They won, get over it. Let’s keep the talk on the Mets. Step mentioning them, it does no good for the us.

MVPhils November 3, 2008 at 5:35 pm

i was wondering why Cerrone or someone didn’t post a thread today announcing Amaro as the new GM? i thought you guys were doing phillies along with mets coverage from now on?

oh well, cant wait for the magic number to go up in mid june!

foul bunt strikeout November 3, 2008 at 5:40 pm

phukthephills November 3, 2008 at 6:32 pm

like seriously…do u hav a life???? if u r a phillies fan then go to a phillies blog…u obviously have nothing better to do then to post comments on a mets blog that noone cares about..not one person on this blog cares about what u r writing

stickguy November 3, 2008 at 5:56 pm

The dude is already ahead. It was IIRC a 1995 Mitsubishi. Not worth close to the 2700 alrady peldged!

He did say that anything raised above some figure (I think his new car, but not apecified if he was getting a new BMW) would be donated to someother guy whose car was also flipped.

phukthephills November 3, 2008 at 6:29 pm

trade fmart, parnell and 1 other prospect for russel martin
trade kunz, hielman, evans and maybe 1 more (schnieder) for putz or any other closer
sign cruz, ibanez, and garland

reyes
murph 2nd
wright
delgado
beltran
martin
ibanez
church

johan
pelf
maine
garland
some1 else – maybe niese or another cheap FA

closer – putz/whoever
setup – cruz

once again…the most important thing for this team to fix is the 8th and 9th inning bullpen..of coarse there are other problems but i think if we can get players to shut down the opposition in the 8th and 9th then we would be one of the best teams in the major leagues
