Outfield: Mets still Eyeing Raul Ibanez
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 3, 2008 8:41 am

In the Boston Globe, Nick Cafardo writes, “The Mets are still eyeing Mariners free agent Raul Ibanez.

Ibanez played in all 162 games this season, and hit .293 with 23 HR, 110 RBI and a .358 OBP.

He has hit at least .280 with 20 HR and a .350 OBP during each of the last four seasons with the Mariners.

According to Cafardo, “They need a consistent hitter in the outfield, and Ibanez seems to fit what Minaya is looking for.”

During last season’s trade deadline, ESPN’s Peter Gammons said the Mariners had been requesting two of Fernando Martinez, Jon Niese and Robert Parnell from the Mets in a deal for Ibanez.

ibanez would help bring balance and consistency to the Mets lineup…for the most part, he hits roughly the same whether against lefties or righties, in april or september, with men on base or not on base…he’s not going to wow you day in and day out, but he’s reliable, consistent, will keep the line moving, and be a good supporting player to the middle of the lineupat the same time, he’s 36 years old, which is a concern, especially if he’s looking for a three-year deal

Decent #’s………what’s his contract status ??

  2. iluvbuckner says:

someone or something didn’t set their clocks back.

  3. mdemaio says:

A while back I’d suggested signing Ibanez & Tatis to play the corners & packaging Church for a guy like Putz…this feels like it makes some sense…Seattle needs to replace Ibanez’s bat, and Church can play CF…

  4. dominicanboy08 says:

I think he is a good pick up as long as we get a right handed RF. we can trade church for pitching.

  5. stickguy says:

Isn’t he a type A? So you lose a top pick (guess 2nd round in the Mets case).

Bigger issue, he is old (36? something like that). Thought it was time to get younger?

This would have been a great in season pick up. Not a great guy to sign for 3 years at big money.

Wouldn’t mind getting putz though, if it didn’t cost too much in talent (aka a salary dump). Just hope he gets his form back (pulls a lidge?)

    • mdemaio says:

I think the objective is to get better in a way that doesn’t mortgage the future..Ibanez is a solid, solid bat who’s in great shape, has no attitude issues, was one of Beltran’s mentors way back, is allegedly a great clubhouse guy, never gets hurt, and is a native NYer (and, if I remember correctly, grew up a Mets fan). A middle of the lineup that goes Wright Delgado Beltran, Ibanez is pretty potent.

      • hot stove chef says:

Doesn’t giving up a top draft pick for a 37 year old “mortgage the future”?

      • kingman 26 says:

Thanks MDemaio for a PERFECT description of Ibanez. He was a late bloomer, and is a fine all around player. Yes, he is another lefty bat, but one who can be counted on for 500–600 at bats, which Church, who I do like, has never reached. We may trade Church, he may never be the same after the concussions, he may get hurt again, he might not be able to hit lefties consistently, etc.

Ibanez is not Manny, but would be infinitely cheaper, and would be a solid and productive guy to have on this team.

And we could platoon Tatis with Church in right, which would negate the whole “we can’t have two lefties” argument.

      • Reyes es el Rey says:

It’s called a “steep decline phase.” Unless Ibanez knows some loopholes in the steroids testing rules this is probably a bad idea.

And Omar will probably do it.

        • kingman 26 says:

Or he may have just been a late bloomer….not saying this is the very best we could do, but Manny and Tex are probably not happening, and this would be a productive bat.

          Hopefully for 2 or 3 years…..

        • Gina says:

Or he’d just be another bad contract, case of our front office not taking a steep decline into consideration, i.e Castillo.

      • Gina says:

He’s also going to cost a draft pick and is HORRIBLE defensively. And not that much of an upgrade over our current options offensively. Some sort of platoon would of Tatis, Murphy and Evans would likely give you the same production, and at least the same defense if not better, without costing you money or a draft pick.

    • cgio07 says:

As long as the mets get a reliever that doesnt blow 7 santana wins ill be happy.

Does anyone else think wagner should give santana his owed salary for winning the cy young? Considering its probably going to be wagners fault that santana doesnt win the cy young this year

  6. mdemaio says:

    This was the plan
    Sign Ibanez, Lowe, Easley, Tatis
    Trade Heilman, Parnell for Grabow
    Trade Church, prospect for Putz

If signing a third type-A FA is a possibility, sign Cruz.then you’re bullpen has a l-r setup and a closer, all of whom can pitch to both lefties and righties…

    • hot stove chef says:

Cruz is a type A free agent. I can’t see giving up a 1st round draft pick for an 8th inning guy.

      • Dirtysanchez says:

i know but truth be told we dont have a 8th inning guy to begin with. I think the cruz option has to be a last option depending on what else they do.

  7. rd says:

Going to turn 37 in June… No speed, and another left handed bat…….

    • Ellen says:

Why why why do we continue to go with age over youth? And he is looking for a 3 yr deal no less? This is NOT what I was expecting from Omar first shot out of the box this off-season.

      • npanzeca says:

We really don’t have enough right now to go after youth. Most of the FA types are older, thats just the way it is. Its not ideal but I’d rather sign an older guy or 2 and hang on to what few chips that we have.

        • hot stove chef says:

You have to build youth through the draft or by signing guys who are not older type A free agents. Teixera is an example of a young type A that is worth the investment. They are few and far between, but they are out there.

      • wrightstuff08 says:

if you are going to waste draft picks on a type A signing, then you might as well sign Manny to a 3 year contract for more money. he is at least worthy of type A status.

        • wrightstuff08 says:

          plus Manny is right handed

        • npanzeca says:

I would agree but Bora$ isn’t going to accept a 3 year deal, he wants at least 5.

        • Coolpapabell says:

Agreed. Boras will not accept a three year deal.

        • wrightstuff08 says:

npanzeca, we dont know for sure what Manny will get for years but hopefully Omar is going to find out. i highly doubt that Manny will get a guaranteed 5 year contract.

        • hot stove chef says:

Agreed. If you can get him for four years, with the understanding that you’re really only going to get about 2-2.5 years of production out of the deal, and it won’t impact the future, I think you have to think about.

Pedro may have stunk it up in the last couple of years, but his one solid year, which was the first in the contract, made it somewhat worthwhile.

        • npanzeca says:

If Bora$ takes 3 years its going to be for 25-35 mil a year. If we think otherwise we aren’t paying attention to what Bora$ stands for. But I agree that Omar needs to do his due dillegence here.

        • cgio07 says:

i think i read that the mets have $30 million to spend…so by getting manny we would have the same met team (barring trades) with manny. Last i checked manny cant get people out after the 7th inning, which is what the mets main focus should be on. They were criticized for nearly 2 months about how horrendous the bullpen was, im pretty sure Minaya would rather shore up that problem before going after a potential clubhouse cancer in manny

      • Chiefman says:

Interesting to seeIbanez September numbers. He finished 7 for his last 56. September home run total was 1. Just what we need, a 36 year old lefty hitting poor defensive outfielder who swoons in September.

I pray that this report is erroneous and that Omar’s not thinking of signing Ibanez.

  8. FlightFromHouston says:

Omar, please resist your instincts and avoid signing this aging player … and if you must sign him, if you can’t resist, then please make it a one-year deal.

    • HOFMets57 says:

      F-Mart and Parnell/Niese?!

      NO WAY.

      • HOFMets57 says:

We desperately need RH hitters. Too many teams attacked the middle/bottom of our order with LH relievers who faced 3 straight lefties (Church, Schneider, Murphy or Church, A. Reyes Schneider).

        • Reyes es el Rey says:

          Your 2008 Mets:
          vs. LHP .276/.349/.439
          vs. RHP .262/.337/.413

Although that’s just cumulative and not broken down by innings to account for vs. starters and vs. relievers, I think this whole WE NEED A RIGHTY!!! thing is way overblown.

        • Nate W. says:

yup, Tatis was the difference maker against the LHP’s, especially the relievers.

      • Nate W. says:

There is no trade to be made now as Ibanez is a free agent.

Since Ibanez will likely be a type A free agent the Mariners will get two compensation draft picks which they will use to attempt to draft two players will ability similar to the prospects they asked for in trade. This is why Ibanez wasnt traded at the deadline, the Marliners valued the draft picks more than Ibanez…

    • Chiefman says:

Enough with these 36 year old players. How can we not have learned this lesson?

    • 4JoeOrsulak says:

Even if it’s a one-year-deal, the damage will have been done. The Mets would have forfeited a high draft pick for a below-average left fielder.

I can’t wait for the headline; Mets do something really, really stupid!!

  9. samp says:

Do you know what fielding is, Cerrone?

  10. Dirtysanchez says:

Is this guy a type A?

  11. hot stove chef says:

Ryan Church is going to give you similar if not better numbers, is considerably younger, cheaper, and plays better defense. He won’t cost you draft picks, or force you to have another aging player in your everyday lineup with deteriorating skills.

    I don’t understand Omar.

Doesn’t it make more sense to keep Church and sign Fuentes?

    • HOFMets57 says:

I try and not give into the racial ‘component’ of Omar’s thinking but it’s things like this that make me think otherwise…

    • stilltheEWM says:

Church has never put up numbers like Ibanez… that being said I really don’t like either one.

    • DjDeF says:

Umm Ibanez is a LF. His coming to the Mets has nothing to do with Ryan Church being on this team.

    • therealsince86 says:

Who said anything about losing Church? It would be Church and Ibanez. Not that you want 2 LH in the bottom of the order. Unless you can upgrade catcher with a RH bat.

      • hot stove chef says:

They’re both LH, it’s very clear, based on last year, that they need a RH power hitter in this lineup. There is now way Church and Ibanez can function in the same lineup, unless you get Manny Ramirez to play 1B and trade Delgado

        • Reyes es el Rey says:

          Posted again:

          Your 2008 Mets:
          vs. LHP .276/.349/.439
          vs. RHP .262/.337/.413

Although that’s just cumulative and not broken down by innings to account for vs. starters and vs. relievers, I think this whole WE NEED A RIGHTY!!! thing is way overblown.

        • Reyes es el Rey says:

Oh and Ibanez is old and can’t field. But hey, so was Castillo and that worked out great.

        • DjDeF says:

everyone rips Omar for emphasizing defense but when it comes to a good hitter then they say the guy can’t field. Which is it? So will you be saying the same thing about manny if Omar was going after him?

        • Gina says:

Who’s ripped him for emphasizing defense?

        • Danny says:

The problem isn’t that Omar emphasizes defense, it’s that he claims that some acquisitions are good defensive players when they are not (Castillo, Schneider).

  12. stilltheEWM says:

wow a 35 plus year old OF… never seen Omar go after these guys before..

    No thanks…

  13. Capital City Goofball says:

    Too old!

  14. npanzeca says:

Do we know for sure that Ibanez is a type A?

  15. Fiya Minaya says:

35 years and mediocre– the only question for Omar is 4 or 5 year deal?

    • kingman 26 says:

He is 36, and is nothing remotely close to mediocre.

      • ArmandoReynoso says:

I think he’s too old to commit more than 2 yrs to… but Wow! 23 HRs and 110 RBIs is mediocre????

I get it now? We need to find that “under the radar” guy, who’s young, and cheap, and can hit 50HR and drive in 200 runs per year — and not cost us any draft picks/prospects?

  16. zen says:

not worth giving up draft picks.

if signed it better not be for more than a year.

  17. atlantasnumber1metsfan says:

I love how people continually act on this site as if Omar has already made this deal. He hasn’t and probably won’t and even then you guys continually bag on this guy…So sad how petty people are. I agree he’s not the guy we need, he also already resisted this guy once for two of our better prospects. If it happens, then you can complain, until then shut your trap!

  18. Nate W. says:

Murphy and Tatis will give comparable production and only cost about $2.1 mil

why would the Mets spend any time at all thinking about the OF other than Manny Ramirez?

Beltran, Church, Murphy/Tatis, Endy, Marlon Anderson

Trading Delgado and signing Dunn to play 1B would make more sense than Ibanez, imo.

  19. mrmustseetv says:

One more thing why this is not a good signing –

HE’D COST US A !ST ROUND DRAFT PICK!!!!!

  20. Gina says:

Why would we waste a type A free agent on this guy, especially considering he’s horrible defensively. If they sign Ibanez I may have to change my name to Fiya Minaya

  21. Gina says:

I know I just made a comment about wasting a first rounder but now that I think about it, we’ll likely sign a better type A than Ibanez, like a Fuentes so thats where our first rounder would go right? Ibanez would just cost money?

Either way signing a Ibanez is a waste, we’ll get the same, if not better, production from some sort of super platoon of Tatis/Murphy/Evans.

  22. stemog1 says:

Don’t forget, we’re losing a free agent or two of our own in all likelihood, so we’ll be getting those picks back. We’re unlikely to sign more than one Type A free agent and we’ll likely lose one in Oliver Perez, so we’ll still get the picks, it’s just a matter of where in the first round and the supplemental round. That being said, I hope Omar chooses the right Type A guy to sign.

  23. stickguy says:

why would some beat writer in Boston have a clue about what Omar is doing/thinking? The guys in NY don’t even have that!

Besides, I am sure he is interesteed at some level (kicking the tires?) in every FA or readily available guy. Doesn’t mean he will do something stupid (and this would be just that) and sign him!

  24. hbrill61 says:

    Bottom Line…He’s 2 Old

  25. bkfitz says:

Rather sign Burrell, Dunn, or Juan Rivera.

  26. cgio07 says:

the mets should sign burrell and have him sit the bench every game of his contract

    i hate pat burrell

  27. methead says:

Umm..no where did it say Omar was going to sign him. He is looking at him. He looks at EVERY player. With that said, No to Ibanez!

Now this whole Manny thing..Manny = Winners. Period. No arguing. Secondly, you sign Manny, trade Delgado, give murphy 1B, use the cash from Delgado trade, and about 10 million left after signing Manny and go get yourself 3 relivers. Then give someone else the closers role (ie Maine). Krod is not worth it.

Just remember….had we traded for Manny, we would have been in the world series regardless of the bullpen.
