According to Jon Heyman in SI.com, Jake Peavy has told the Padres he is willing to accept a trade to the Yankees and Angels.
Of course, according to the New York Post, Peavy’s agent, Barry Axelrod, told reporters that he and his client have not said they will approve a deal to the Yankees and Angels.
Nevertheless, Heyman explains, Peavy would prefer to be traded to the Braves, Cubs, Dodgers, Cardinals or Astros.
“If we trade, it’s going to have to be a lot [in return],” Padres GM Kevin Towers told MLB.com, “it’s going to be significant.”
Steve in NC sent in an e-mail asking:
“If Peavy has added the Yankees, why not the Mets? Any ideas?”
…my hunch is that a) he knows the Mets have zero chance of acquiring him, as they just do not have the minor-league talent to pull off a deal, and b) he doesn’t really want to play for the Yankees, he wants to play for the Braves, and by publicly mentioning the Yankees and Angels, it may spook other teams to be more aggressive…

he would cost way too much for the mets to get
way too much for ‘it to be worth it for the mets’ to get.
exactly, give up prospects for a guy who doesn’t even want to be here?
yup…these are all bargaining motives.
I don’t see how the Angels have the prospects to get it done. And I think the Yankees would have to destroy their farm system to get it done.
I agree, i think the Yankees would rather keep their prospects and go after CC
The Yanks will go after both
I think you are being a wishful thinker Matt. Unfortunately, I think that Peavy, much like many professional baseball players, doesn’t think a whole lot of the New York Mets.
He probably doesn’t like the idea of New York in general, but like many professional baseball players that aren’t crazy about New York (or the Northeast) … they would be willing to make an exception for the New York Yankees, the most well known and famous sports team in the history of the world.
Yeah, it pains me to say it just as much as it does for you to read it, but that is the reality. I doubt it’s any more complex than that. If you are a guy like Peavy, what is your incentive to want to come to the Mets? You are already signed, and the Mets aren’t winners.
Peavy has already stated that he doesn’t like NY at all(not teams the city) he doesn’t want anything to do with it, and he also said he doesn’t want to go to the AL. He wants to stay in the NL and go to one of the mid-west, south east teams. Problem is not many of those want him and the ones that do aren’t willing to give up their top prospects (Braves already said no to Jurjians and their #1 guy in the minors Hansen). So to try to get other teams involved he had to open up to the Angels who have and have had the best farm system in baseball. Their entire team outside Vlad, and Hunter. They also just let a few of their home grown go to the Braves in the Tex Deal and have other ready to come up and fill in.
So the Angels can far and away blow people away if they wanted, but it’s not their style and they have one of the best if not the best SP rotation in baseball already.
This is exactly to get the other teams to Panic and over-pay. Kind of like they tried to do with the Santana deal last year and the only “Real” offer that was ever mentioned was the Mets and that’s who got him, without parting with their #1 overall prospect.
The Angels don’t have the best farm in baseball at all anymore. I’m not even sure they’d be in the top ten. Although out of the teams he has listed they’d probably be 3rd.
if the northeast is so bad…then why did the last two WS champions come from the NE? its money….and thats it…players go where the money is !!!
No, the thing is, many professional baseball players are cowards.
They’d rather play in San Diego or somewhere and have warm weather, an occasional shot at a good team, and a relaxed atmosphere. They’re not willing to trade the big risk for the big reward of playing here.
Why would he think he has more of a chance of a big reward here than with the Cubs or Cardinals or Dodgers or Braves? It’s not like he’s asking to only be traded to crappy teams. Those are good teams that have as much of a chance as we do without the added obnoxiousness of north east media and some of the ridiculous fans.
I think they could deal FMart + Niese + Murphy for him and I think it would be worth it.
Top 3:
(1) Santana
(2) Peavy
(3) Pelfrey
(4) Maine
(5) Someone.
And that’s for the next 5 years.
It would be worth it for us but why would the Padres do it?
because everyone takes a number to help the mets….
This isn’t fantasy baseball….you don’t waste all of your prospects and trading chips on a #1a starter when you already have a #1 – while having no bullpen whatsoever and holes in your lineup.
Niese and Murphy will undoubtedly contribute to the major league team next year and there is a decent chance F-Mart does too. Why trade all 3 so we can double the number of “(Santana OR Peavy) must regret coming here and watching the pen blow all of their wins” posts?
Clearly dealing prospects (Humber, Mulvey, and Guerra all seemed to struggle this year and Carlos Gomez’s OBP was like 0.298) for proven talent is a good move.
The Pads would probably want any trade to start with Pelfrey and FMart…thanks but no thanks…
“he doesn’t really want to play for the Yankees, he wants to play for the Braves, and by publicly mentioning the Yankees and Angels, it may spook other teams to be more aggressive…”
Umm, if he wanted to spook the Braves into a trade, wouldn’t he mention the Mets as a possible destination? Why would the Braves care about the Yankees or Angels? It’s not like he’s a free agent looking to up the bidding.
Matt,
If the Mets don’t have what it would take to get this done, exactly who do the Yankees have? Phil “DL” Hughes and Ian Kennedy, I think, have been discovered to be just hype, and beyond them, their guys of potential value are years away.
