“I take a lot of pride in being a complete player,” Beltran said in a statement from the team.  “Even on the days when I don’t get a hit, I feel I can make a difference in the field.”

“Individual awards are nice,” added Wright, “but, for me, my entire focus is on the team and getting back to the playoffs.”

beltran is the best in the game.

wright has photographs of the rawlings voters in uncomfortable situations.

  2. HOFMets57 says:

Looking back, I thought Jose was going to be the defensive star.

He has a LONG way to go before earning his first…

    • HOFMets57 says:

      To clarify…

I think his problem is, he doesn’t react to the ball well. Cohen commented on it a couple times, like Jose is on the back of his heels rather than on his toes. He gets bad jumps, has a very poor throw to first when drifting to his right and NEVER throws overhand (always sidearm), despite the necessity to when throwing across your body deep in the hole. His range is mediocre and subsequently, his zone factor…

      • Simon says:

I think this analysis is dead-on, but I don’t think it’s fair to summarize it by saying that Reyes is mediocre.

The problem isn’t that he isn’t a valuable defender, because he is. The problem is that he doesn’t play the position particularly well and makes up for it with athleticism. When guys like that get older, guys like that become albatrosses.

Sometimes they do, anyways. A lot of guys like that start lazy because they can get away with it, but as soon as they notice themselves slipping start making better decisions. I believe that’ll be the case with Reyes – he acts like an eight year old sometimes, but he’s not a stupid man or somebody who doesn’t care about winning.

I wish he’d adjust now, though. And I’m pretty terrified about the idea of a 30 year old Reyes Jetering it up out there.

  3. rustyjr says:

i still believe johan and jose deserved the award also but ill take 3 :)

  4. metsfan227 says:

It never ceases to amaze me how every year people debate who deserves this award. It’s meaningless. I thought after Rafael Palmerio won when he had only played 20-something games at first base that everyone knew this award didn’t matter.

Deserves? Since when has that matter in getting a Gold Glove.

  5. dave27 says:

Who do we think makes a disparaging coment about Wright winning first…Chipper or Rollins?

  6. Steviefan84 says:

My bets on Rollins or Victorino. lol

  7. toomanyuniforms says:

Wright has the two most important qualifications for a RAWLINGS(TM) Gold Glove(TM) — good offensive year and he won one the previous year.

  8. guierllNO MOta says:

did jeter win one too? this award should be scrapped, although Beltran certainly deserves it, cant name 3 OF’s in baseball better, as for 3B…we can all name 5 or 6 in the NL better than ours defensively.

Does he split his award with Delgado for saving him from having a dozen more errors on his resume this year?

    • MudvilleNine says:

Name me one that makes that bare-handed play better and more consistantly. Seems to me that exact play is what gave Brooks Robinson his reputation of being one of the greatest defensive thirdbasemen ever. But I’ll defer to you since you know better than the managers and coaches who voted for him.

      • Reyes es el Rey says:

Yea that’s David’s best play. I bet the Rays wouldn’t mind if Wright taught Longoria how to make that play (think game 3 of the series).

Wright has great range, but his arm is only so-so. I’d still like to seem him play a little closer to the line,–how many screaming grounders for doubles down the line does he have to watch go past him?

        • MudvilleNine says:

Actually thats a managers decision. One strategy is to play off the lines by about 15 feet because stats have shown that more balls are hit in the holes between 3rd and short, and 2nd and 1st, than go down the lines. Also those balls down the lines are hit hard and even when playing closer to the line, will go down for a double a good percentage of the time anyway. So the idea is to cut down the hits through the hole which happen more often. I just gave a lousy explanation of it but I hope you followed. I even did my own little research on it and found it to be true. I always had my college kids keep track of where balls were hit by us and the opposition and when I looked back through 4 or 5 years of scorebooks it did show more balls hit in the holes than down the lines.

  9. Koko says:

Last year Wright probably didn’t deserve it, but this year he was spot on. He started out a little weak, but as the season progressed he was just plan outstanding at making plays. Sure his arm might need to be slightly more accurate, but his glove work is wonderful.

    And Beltran is Beltran.

Jose didn’t deserve it. He should have more range, but doesn’t. He makes spectacular plays at times, but he doesn’t get to a lot of balls he should. As someone mentioned, he doesn’t react fast enough.

Johan probably could have one it, but ehh.

If Church stayed healthy for the entire year, I think he might have won it as well…

    • kingman 26 says:

I agree…and once Maddux finally retires or doesn’t win, it will be Johan’s for the next decade…

  10. saverio says:

The Mets should resign Perez, Pedro Martinez and sign Greg Maddux.

If they could somehow turn Luis Castillo and someone besides Aaron Heilman (he was injured all year and has shown himself to be a good if ) into Vazquez, that’s an acceptable rotation.

    Or get Peavy.

Still need a closer but there is some bullpen talent.

    • rustyjr says:

he’s not worth what he’s asking

    • phillyhater says:

that is absolutely ridiculous! sign Pedro and Maddux? WTF is wrong with you? Yeah, lets sign more old, aging, washed up veterans. Have you not been paying attention to baseball the last 20 years? Youth is what wins you pennants, and especially home grown youth. We might as well resign El Dugue, and bring back Mo Vaughn right? Maybe Moises Alou can play next year while we’re at it.

    • please, tell me your joking? are you refering to the Pedro and Maddux of 10 years ago?

  11. iamatwork says:

it’s gold glove, not gold arm.

  12. CaseStreet says:

Jose def got the shaft for the All-Star game and the Gold Glove.

    • metsftw says:

reyes is rated as pretty average by most defensive metrics

      • rustyjr says:

well sometimes the numbers lie – ozzie smiths rep was built upon the amazing plays he made same with ordonez and reyes

        • Reyes es el Rey says:

I’m guessing Ozzie and Rey-Rey were pretty awesome based on defensive metrics. Jose is very athletic and can occasionally make amazing plays, but inning after inning I would say there are a number of shortstops who are better in the field.

Off the top of my head, Rollins, Bartlett, Tulowitzki, Jack Wilson, O. Cabrera, and probably Alexei Ramirez when they switch him there.

        • rustyjr says:

i dissagree but hey what do i know lol

      • Ceetar says:

shame they’re wrong. Granted I didn’t watch _every_ SS in the league, but Reyes is one of the best defensively. If there was only one defensive inning left in the game, Mets up 9-8 game 7 of the World Series there isn’t a single active SS i the game that I’d put in there over Reyes.

        • kingman 26 says:

I agree…like Wright, Jose makes some errors on easy plays, but overall he is excellent, and has one of the best arms for a shortstop since Shawon Dunston.

  13. rustyjr says:

guys dodgers turned down penny’s option comments??

    • kingman 26 says:

I would give him a shot…he is only 30 and could have some good years left…I would wait and see what the market is…

Only drawback–we kick his butt pretty bad! We are like 13–5 against him I think….which makes him 89–62 against everyone else!

  14. dominicanboy08 says:

who is better Andy Sonnanstine or Edwin Jackson ?

    • phukthephills says:

id say sonninstine…but i really havent seen either of them play that much…

      • LongJohnMaine says:

Jackson has a live arm and the higher upside, but his control (or lack thereof) isn’t good. Sonnanstine has better control but his raw stuff isn’t as good as Jackson’s. Take it for what it’s worth.

  15. metz1 says:

i wonder if chipper jones has anything to say about wrights gold glove?

  16. 2009_believe says:

First of all, your user name is really clever
how long did it take you to come up with it?

Second of all, obviously you know nothing of baseball because a gold glove award isn’t about offense its about defense.

Third – maybe its time to grow up don’t you think

  17. Mandy Meowpants says:

hi guys, im a mets fan living in boston and i just ran into Alex Speier from WEEI (our sports radio station in boston) at a local bar here and he just told me there’s trade discussion right now for DUSTIN PEDROIA!! THATS RIGHT, he got a call as I was speaking to him and told me it’s not finished yet but what it amounts to is fernando martinez, aaron heilman, brian schneider & bobby parnell for DUSTIN PEDROIA!!! the details arent definite yet but thats what its most likely going to amount to. CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?? I KNOW ITS CRAZY AND I HOPE ITS TRUE, IM SOOOO EXCITED!!!!!!! We can really use pedroia’s leadership & clutch hitting..TAKE THAT PHILLIES, WE WILL HAVE PEDROIA!!!

    LETS GO METSSSSSSSSSSS!!!! :-)

  18. clarkx14 says:

i doubt that is true MeowPants, but i would like to see the mets trade for sonnastine, sign sheets, hudson, and revamp the bullpen… when sheets gets injured we will still have niese in AAA.. also i would like to sign someone like rocco baldelli to platoon in left with david murphy

  19. whynot1 says:

What’s wrong with this paragraph, from Rob Neyer on espn.com:

“David Wright is a good third baseman, but I think he’s getting those bonus points for being a great hitter. That said, most of the best third basemen were in the American League, and I did have Wright as the second-best third baseman in the National League, behind only Scott Rolen. And considering that Rolen played only 104 games on the field this season, Wright’s selection is highly defensible.”

  20. MetsFan4Decades says:

I love hearing about all these trade talks and rumors. I wish some of these would actually become fact but as some are too good to be true, they’ve got to be rumors.

And congrats to Beltran and Wright – for what it’s worth.

I’m in the camp that Beltran is hands down one of the best of two defensive outfielders in the game – if not the best.
Wright’s defense has definitely improved this past year. Now if he could only make ALL throws to first spot on, he’d be one of the top 3rd baseman for years to come.

  21. D-Day says:

hey everyone off subject but putting it out there. im try to get a citi field brick but they say they are sold out. i sent the mets an email and they got me on a waiting list if they decide to comission more bricks for the fanwalk. to make a long story short anyone who didnt get a brick yet that still wants one go to the fanwalk website and email them. the more people we get the better the chance theyll give more bricks. im REALLY want one but missed the boat cause my birthday is in october and they were sold out by then and ive been really down about it ever since. help a die hard fan out if you guys can!

  22. rustyjr says:

they will – they are greedy bastids lol

  23. rustyjr says:

btw guys from mlb trade rumors
Mets GM Omar Minaya commented on Manny Ramirez, indicating that he plans to invest in pitching instead

  24. nymetskid11368 says:

Looks like wright seems mad focused on leading the team and bringing them back 2 the playoffs well good 2 see him like that. hopefully the mets can take wat rollins said and seeing the philles go 2 the world series as motavation im lookin foward to ‘09 deff go mets 09!!!!

  25. Reyes es el Rey says:

I’m pretty sure McLouth is a terrible fielder. Also, Pujols is an awesome fielder–why does he never get any love? He better get the MVP.

    • GravediggerHebner says:

I realize errors don’t tell the full story, but McLouth made ONE in 155 games. Doesn’t sound terrible to me.

      • rustyjr says:

IT’S CUZ HES ON A LAST PLACE TEAM – HE WILL NEVER BE RECOGNIZED UNTIL HE JOINS A Better team – sorry bout the caps

  26. Sylar says:

You also aren’t funny, and you obviously have no life

  27. rustyjr says:

obvious a new member of furiouso’s troll squad

  28. Sylar says:

    Furioso, your disguises are terrible.

When you get banned again for being an incessant troll, just stop trying to come here, and please, GET A LIFE.

  29. Ceetar says:

what, he should be a whiny, lazy player like rollins? no thanks.

He’s not ‘leading’ the team, because Manuel’s blocking him. Kick the crappy manager to the curb

  30. rustyjr says:

hopefully that was sarcasm ceetar lol
