One strategy is to play off the lines by about 15 feet because stats have shown that more balls are hit in the holes between 3rd and short, and 2nd and 1st, than go down the lines. Also those balls down the lines are hit hard and even when playing closer to the line, will go down for a double a good percentage of the time anyway. So the idea is to cut down the hits through the hole which happen more often. I just gave a lousy explanation of it but I hope you followed. I even did my own little research on it and found it to be true. I always had my college kids keep track of where balls were hit by us and the opposition and when I looked back through 4 or 5 years of scorebooks it did show more balls hit in the holes than down the lines.
