Quote: Ryan Church on Francesa’s Comments
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 5, 2008 8:33 am

In early October, on WFAN, Mike Francesa said he has been told that Ryan Church ‘hated it here,’ while adding, ‘I know for a fact that he didn’t like the Mets, he didn’t like the city and he was not a happy guy here.’

In a chat and on his blog for the Daily News, Adam Rubin explained that the opposite was true, that Church truly enjoyed playing in New York, adding that Church is even open to signing a long-term contract here.

That said, in a great report yesterday for MLB.com, which chronicles a long, difficult season for Church, Marty Noble quotes the left-fielder as saying of Francesa’s comments:

“I say just, consider the source.  I never said anything like that, never thought anything like that. With all that happened, I really enjoyed my time playing.  And when I finally got back, the way I was received, it was great.  I love it there.  I want to play there, I want to finish [my career] there.”

Speaking of radio, according to MikeFrancesa.com, citing an inside source, WFAN may be leaning towards Kim Jones as Francesa’s co-host during WFAN’s Mike’d Up.

great, so, once again, instead of teaming up francesa – a Yankees fan – with a knowledgeable Mets personality, they may team him up with jones, who spent the last two years working for YES, traveling with and covering the Yankees

…so, again, instead of having a balance of Yankee knowledge and Mets knowledge on the most influential talk-show in New York City, it will be Yankees and Yankees…lovely

That’s nothing the power button can’t take care of, Matt…

On the flipside, I’d be glad to see Benigno stay on Daily News Live. He and Cotter have solid chemistry…I enjoy that show.

    • FlightFromHouston says:

beningo and cotter … oh the chemistry, the wonderful chemistry.

      • Steviefan84 says:

“Oh The Pain!” I think Cotter and Benigno work well together although I’m sure they want to strangle each other at times.

    • HitTheSinkerBall says:

I am with you on that one. I stopped listening to that idiot after him and mad dogs idiotic reports on the Santana situation. Oh Santana does not want to be a Met he wants to be a Yankee or Red Sox they kept saying. Meanwhile it was well known that Santana wanted to play in the NL and for Mets. He loves making it out that every dam player rather play for the Yankees and other teams rather then the Mets. He is a pampas’s jack off.

On a good note …. GM meetings here and finally the offseason is starting up which is great. I love the idea of just loading up on pitching. Would love to see the Mets get Lowe and resign Perez. Hell even trade for Vasquez if it means given up a prospect and dumping Castillo. LETS GO METS IN 09!!!!

    • Tidewater says:

      Exactly. Stop listening.

Patient: Doc, it hurts when I do this.
      Doctor: Don’t do this.

    • BigDaddyKirk says:

Exactly. The problem isn’t that they’re teaming fatty with another Yankee fan. The problem is that people continue to listen. Not that Michael Kay is any better over on ESPN, but at least he makes intelligent statements.

      • atlantasnumber1metsfan says:

woah….hold your horses…Michael Kay and Intelligent should NEVER go in the same sentence…

  2. Jaded1983 says:

Looking forward to a healthy year of Church in ‘09. I think he will suprise a lot of the doubters next year.

    • Jaded1983 says:

I just went back to the first post about this from Oct 1, and i want to quote something that “Hit the weights Ziele” said

Comment by Hit The Weights Zeile

yes but one thing we have been saying is we dont need all stars we need guys who can bust their butts every day and give us good enough production to compliment the big guys. if healthy for the whole season church would have been one of those guys.

BINGO! Everyone here clamors for “heart” and “grit” and “hustle” and we actually DO have those players on this team. One of them is named Ryan Church, it drives me crazy to hear people want Eckstein because he is “gritty” and then want to trade ryan church because he “s.ucks”

church wont knock out 40 homers next year, but he’ll do EXACTLY what the mets need him to do, ie be a great everyday role player. Mets fans need to realize this isnt fantasy baseball, you need so much more than just all stars at every position….

      • therealsince86 says:

Exactly I can’t understand why people want to get rid of Church and want to bring in Byrnes or Eckencrappy because of grit. Here is a guy who is gritty and good. Keep him.

        • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

im flattered. i also hate how people say if he didnt get hurt he wouldve reverted back to being a 4th outfielder, and that the ryan church of the last 2 weeks was the real ryan church. thats garbage this guy is a great defensive RF, and can hit you 40 doubles. I hope he is still a met next year.

        • therealsince86 says:

Yeh, they totally ignore the fact that he had 60 Extrabase hits in only 400 and some AB’s in 2007.

        • Jaded1983 says:

coupled with the fact that he was battling fatigue and a hip injury as well!

guys a gamer, definitely looking forward to a beltran/church CF/RF tandem for the next couple of years

        • Cactus says:

The Mets would have been better off with Lastings Milledge last year, and that was the whole reasoning behind defending this awful trade.

  3. therealsince86 says:

You would have had to have been an idiot to believe Mike’s story anyway.

    • kingman 26 says:

Amen to that my friend……Francesa is a truly shameless hack….maybe a wealthy and well-known one, but one nonetheless…..

And Dr. Tidewater does have the solution in a few short words right up above.

      • Steviefan84 says:

Mike Francesa’s facts are based on what he thinks and what conclusion he draws, not the actual baseball player himself. I never took Mike seriously and neither should anyone else.

Sometimes I think Mike Francesa would be better served as a crash test dummy instead of a TV talk show host.

        • Tidewater says:

Crash test dummies really need to be of average weight to give researchers a real idea of what happens to people in a crash. Mike would skew all the data, unfortunately.

Maybe he could go work in an anvil factory.

  4. SheaVendor says:

So, I guess the only time I will ever tune to WFAN will be to listen to a Met game. Otherwise, there is no other reason!!

  5. metsfan227 says:

Um…exactly how is the show *influential*?

    • therealsince86 says:

Did you not read all the idiot comments from fans on here from people who believed it?

      • metsfan227 says:

Yeah…but what exactly did his remarks influence. The fact that some fans got upset? Sorry..I don’t see that as having an influence. Unless, there is some documentation that Omar or Cashman or someone who works in an official capacity at any sports organization is listening to this show and taking notes about possible moves, etc. than I don’t see how some guy ranting and getting *fans* upset is influence.

He influences the emotions of the fans? That doesn’t sound like a whole lot of influence to me.

  6. DjDeF says:

Fatty on the Fan is not relevant anymore. FAN just gave him a 5 year contract and they will regret it.

  7. Prismo says:

Your listening is the reason he got a long-term contract. (obviously not just one of you – but imagine if all Mets fans stopped listening to his show)

So if someone doesn’t like the show – don’t listen to it!

    • bkdrew says:

For the life of me, I’ve never understood that either. I don’t have to look too far in a given day to find something that annoys me or ticks me off… so why subject myself to 4-5 hours of something I’m not gonna get enjoyment out of?

  8. apingicer says:

Um, did anyone read the quote? It clearly says Mike is leaning towards Joe Benigno, NOT Kim Jones. The station wants Jones, but Mike wants Joe B. Matt, please read before writing…

    • bkdrew says:

And who do you think has the ultimate decision – Mike or the station? Please think before criticizing…

  9. iamatwork says:

If Church keeps playing his great defense, hits 280 with 30 doubles then he’ll be great and I think he can do that no problem. They just need a righty bat in LF or 2B.

    • therealsince86 says:

Enter Milton Bradley 3 years 36 million. He is said to be seeking 4 years 10 million per. That looks like a good compromise to me.

      • mark4212 says:

Please no to that injury prone Mainly DH last year. He is awful in the field,, has only reached over 100 games 3 times in his career, 120+ twice, one last year where he played DH 95% of the time.

Please no Milton Bradley, bobby abreau mentions. Unless your talking about board games Milton Bradley makes.

  10. DSulls says:

Matt, how about using a little bit of your blogger power and make a post on MetsBlog urging fans to call and write to WFAN to try and convince them that a Mets personality is needed. I’m sure it can’t hurt…..

  11. met123fan says:

Francessa/Kim Jones is not a problem for me…I will just turn off WFAN at 1pm like I always do.

  12. mark4212 says:

Mike’d up is possibly the worst show on the radio. I hated him and Dog, but at least dog had some anti yankee opinions.

Micheal Kay at least has 2 regular contributors on his show who are Raving Mets fans to limit his enthusiasm. Also Kay has said many times over how he didn’t grow up a huge yankees fan and has transformed into one because they are the ones paying his salary. Can’t blame him for that.

Overall his statements are typically colossally wrong on the Mets, but they get tampered by the other 2’s sane point of view.

Mike Fatty. His comments on the mets are terrible, not even close to the right point of view. And if i hear him say one more time that david wright isn’t clutch if i flip over for whatever reason while Mr. Over-rated SS is clutch then i might break my radio.

  13. MetsFan4Decades says:

I never cared for Mike and the Mad Dogs rants and/or opinions but once Mad Dog left, I had to totally stop listening. Mike is so pro Yankee/anti Met that it’s impossible to take anything he says as credible.

I agree with the poster above: that’s what the power button is for….

  14. Genesis Does says:

If WFAN adds ANOTHER Yankee voice that will just go along with the insane proclamations that pompous *** makes every day, I will never listen to that show again. How hard is it to just have a fair and unbiased show in the biggest slot of the day, on OUR station.

If only there was some site that every Mets fan went to where we could organize a boycott…….

  15. Cactus says:

Sorry, but I trust Marty Noble less. He is bitter and cranky and I have no reason to believe that the “quote” he put up is accurate. It very well could be the result of a grudge he has with Francesa.

  16. jaxson says:

Kim Jones is not bad…I don’t care about the Yankee thing, but when she has worked with Mike, he never let her speak. He interupts everyone. I hardly knew she was there. I actually thought that Evan worked the best with Mike. However, I would hate to lose Joe and Evan – I don’t listen to Mike – the anti Met thing goes way to far. I say fire Mike and bring in 2 new guys/girl.

  17. fulltilt720 says:

Maybe its my enormous mets fan bias, but I absolutely love beningo and roberts. As much as I would love to see maybe one of them or a mets fan go onto the Francessa program, I’d hate to see the midday show break up.

  18. TobeRinkler says:

“…so, again, instead of having a balance of Yankee knowledge and Mets knowledge on the most influential talk-show in New York City, it will be Yankees and Yankees…lovely…”

Nothing says it’ll still be the most influential, right? Just once, I’d like to see a show full of interesting commentators who do not reveal their own biases.
