Second Base: Mets interested in Julio Lugo
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 5, 2008 4:10 pm

According to Nick Cafardo in the Boston Globe, the Mets and White Sox may have interest in acquiring 2B Julio Lugo.

Red Sox GM Theo Epstein recently told reporters is 100 percent recovered from a mid-season quadriceps tear.

Cafardo adds, “The White Sox appear willing to move Vazquez. The Mets and White Sox were huddling yesterday afternoon.”

as noted this morning, here, the buzz seems to be that the Mets could swap vazquez for Luis Castillo, who, i guess in cafardo’s scenario, could be replaced by lugo, who the Chicago Tribune suggested could be traded for vazquez

…wait, what…i think i just blacked out

Lugo will earn $9 million in 2009, $9 million in 2010, with a $9 million vesting option for 2011 based on plate appearances.

If you recall, as evident here, the Mets reportedly expressed serious interest in Lugo during November 2006, before he signed with the Red Sox.

  3. Gina says:

Ugh I do not like the idea of making a deal with the Red Sox. I just feel like any deal we’d make would involve us getting fleeced somehow.

  4. BBmetsfreak36 says:

urg. This doesnt help anything. BIG NO THANKS!

  5. One Day This Team Will Kill Me says:

If we were able to get rid of Castillo and Murphy didnt work out, why on earth wouldnt we sign Orlando Hudson the guy who apparently “yearns” to play here?

    Lugo is TERRIBLE

  6. Gina says:

But that being said if the White Sox would actually trade Vasquez for Castillo + a throw in then they would have to be one of the worst organizations in the league.

  7. dave27 says:

Why do I feel like we are becoming the caddyshack behind the Red Sox golf club?

  8. fozzie288 says:

Matt you should call in and rip him apart.

can we agree to not give old middle infielders on the obvious decline of their career money? can we stop? please?

  10. 50dollarsforabrick says:

Lugo, ah No Thanks. The guy can’t hit PERIOD!

  11. phillyhater says:

please stop…no thank you. We already have a great second baseman. He’s young, he’s hungry, he wants to prove himself, he’s a hard nosed, gritty ballplayer, he’s a clutch hitter, he’s a contact hitter, he has a really good eye at the plate, he is a true professional, he is home grown, he will only cost basically pennies, and his name is Daniel Murphy. Yes DANIEL MURPHY

    • phillyhater says:

home grown talent is what wins you championships. WTF Omar, werent you taking notes from the Phillies and how they won it all?

    • MetLifer says:

A quote from Rotoworld about Murphy at 2B yesterday:

“In his second game back from a forearm injury, Daniel Murphy went 3-for-5 with a homer, a double and a walk for the Saguaros of the AFL on Tuesday.
He’s now hitting .388/.484/.612 in 49 at-bats. However, the reviews coming in on his play at second base have been less than stellar.”

      • stickguy says:

Thats why you go to the winter leagues, to get practice and instruction to get better.

Hire him a tutor and work on fielding for 6 hours a day all off season and I bet you see a lot of improvement by ST!

\Besides, Castillo isn’t much of a fielder anymore, and if Murphy is going to hit like this, you can live with adequate D.

Or move Delgado and let Murphy/Evans have 1B.

        Just no more luis!

hey everyone off subject but putting it out there. im try to get a citi field brick but they say they are sold out. i sent the mets an email and they got me on a waiting list if they decide to comission more bricks for the fanwalk. to make a long story short anyone who didnt get a brick yet that still wants one go to the fanwalk website and email them. the more people we get the better the chance theyll give more bricks. im REALLY want one but missed the boat cause my birthday is in october and they were sold out by then and ive been really down about it ever since. help a die hard fan out if you guys can!

vazquez is the same as ollie..not a big game pitcher (as mentioned by his manager!) and he gets wild often…id much rather get lowe than vazquez.

Plus, Lugo is not a very good ballplayer anymore. I know a few Red Sox fans and they despise Lugo about as much as we despise Castillo
