Buzz: Adam Dunn, Benjie Molina and Varitek
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 6, 2008 10:37 am

In a post to his blog for the Mercury News, Giants reporter Andrew Baggerly writes, “Expect the usual round of Benjie Molina trade rumors, but take them with a grain of salt.  None of them have had any substance over the past two seasons.”

Last week at SI.com, Jon Heyman wrote that the Mets had discussed trading for Molina.

Adam Dunn is open to playing either first base or outfield, according to the Arizona Republic, and though he’ll sign with any city, he prefers to be in the National League.

Lastly, according to the Boston Herald, free-agent C Jason Varitek is seeking a four-year, $52.4 million deal, like the one given to Jorge Posada by the Yankees last off-season.

  1. 4 years 52 million for Tek? The Red Sox are insane if they pay him that. You need to hit like Posada to get paid like him and speaking of that, the first year of that deal didn’t look that great for the Yankees did it?

    • BigDaddyKirk says:

That might be justified if he hit the way Posada did in his walk year. Unfortunately for him, he didn’t. Those numbers are just crazy talk!

      • Protes says:

I drafted him on my AL fantasy team this year hoping for a bounce back season. Instead he totally stunk it up. I think he’s done. Any team would be nuts to give him that kind of dough.

  2. BiggieSmalls says:

If I was Boras I wouldnt be bringing up that nasty Posada contract. The Yanks are dreading that now and will be for the next three years.

    • Boscov says:

I just don’t get it, Posada had a career year and hit something like .340 before he got that insane contract. Varitek hit like .220 didn’t he? I mean I just don’t get it, I know the agent needs to aim for the sky but for real Boras? You scumbag.

  3. djshakes2 says:

Varitek might want to put the pipe down. I would have thought that even Boras would be ashamed to ask for that kind of deal.

  4. professor met says:

13 million, four years for a 36 yr old catcher who hit .220. Laughable.

  5. guierllNO MOta says:

I got an idea, lets never talk about any of these 3 players again as none of them will/should be Mets.

    • therealsince86 says:

Nothing wrong with 1 year of Molina over 1 year of Schneider. Better bat and RH at about the same price.

  6. dave27 says:

Most people thought the Red Sox were insane for giving Varitek 4 years after 2004. just because it worked out, do they think Boston owes him 4-year deals until he keels over? He’s lucky to get 2.

  7. FSMetFan says:

i would take benjie but def not the other two

  8. cdubbs says:

wow thats a real stretch. 4 years 50mil + not more than a few catchers in baseball deserve that. let alone an over the hill 36 yo

  9. cdubbs says:

catcher is the least of our needs at this point IMO. pitching, pitching, pitching!

  10. C Dubb says:

I’ll take Adam Dunn on my slow-pitch softball team. But not the Mets.

  11. CitizenSnips says:

Call me crazy but I wouldn’t necessarily be upset if we ended up with Dunn. Since our offense is questionable after our also questionable “Top Four” why not add another bat? If you’re looking for defense then yeah don’t even consider but extra ‘guaranteed’ offense can go a long way. Look at the Phillies.

    • mark4212 says:

I agree. I actually like Dunn due to his age and Power he would provide to a pretty much Homerless lineup, outside Wright(33) Beltran (27) and Delgado (38).

Pretty much outside the 1,3,4,5 spots they got absolutely no production for the majority of the year. A full year of Church can help, but signing Adam Dunn who turns 30 next year is pretty much getting another Carlos Delgado that’s younger. Would open up a trade, because he can play first as well as OF.

      • therealsince86 says:

I have no problems with Dunn either. He could play LF this season and 1B next. Or you could trade Delgado for pitching.

  12. mike1286 says:

varitex has been solid and a valuable part of the redsox success, however just look at his last 3 years…lol not that good, hasnt even come close to hitting 300, and hes what..35? but hey if anyone can ask for such an obnoxious contract its Boras

  13. This Would Be Nice

    Reyes Santana
    Hudson Lowe
    Wright Pelf
    Delgado Vazquez
    Beltran Maine
    Abreu
    Church Fuentez
    Schneider

This just in, in bullpen news:
    ———————————–
According to the New York Daily News, the Mets are interested in free agent Chad Cordero.

Mets general manager Omar Minaya drafted Cordero back when he was running the Expos and reportedly attempted to trade for him several times in the past. Cordero is coming off shoulder surgery and may not be ready for Opening Day, but the Mets are likely willing to take some chances while rebuilding the bullpen.
    ———————————

    • therealsince86 says:

Good why shouldn’t we be “interested”?

      • wnymetsfan says:

I agree it is worth a shot and you have nothing to lose. He will not command a ton of money or years because of the surgery. Sign him to a manageable base with incentives so if it works out the Mets are happy with a good bullpen arm and he is because he will be compensated through the incentives. I have a feeling it gets done.

  15. iamatwork says:

    (1) Considering how they let Damon and Pedro go…

    And say no to Abreu!

    • toomanyuniforms says:

Seconded on Abreu. Nowhere near my team.

      • mark4212 says:

        THIRD!!!!!

I want him nowhere near this team. I want him back on Philly where he can hit his 300 20 HR 100 RBI and 400 OBP and when you watch him every day you wonder where those numbers came from. Cause on a day to day basis he stinks.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

He loafs. Can be a useful part on an already strong team, but not the type of guy the Mets should be adding.

  16. therealsince86 says:

I would not mind taking Winn and Molina to fill out our lineup and spend, spend, spend on pitching. That would leave us up to 40 million to spend on pitching.
You could sign Krod, Lowe/Burnett/Perez/etc, Garland/Wolfe and other bullpen pieces for that kind of money. Better yet, then make the trade for Vasquez. As suming they take Perez in the deal that could leave you even more for the other spots.

  17. toomanyuniforms says:

Varitek, yes. Varitek for anything close to that ludicrous amount, no. Move a decimal point and we’ll talk.

I have no problem with Dunn, if only because I relish the idea of him body-slamming Victorino (yeah, I’m bitter.)

    • therealsince86 says:

Variold’s numbers are way worse than Schnieder and would cost more money and years? Nope.

      • toomanyuniforms says:

Not to get into this age-old argument again, but Varitek is a leader, with tremendous respect among his fellow players. Schneider is a solid player and a decent catcher, but they’re just not comparable. I’d much rather have Varitek . . . just not that much.

  18. Gina says:

I like Dunn a lot but I wouldn’t sign him for more than a 3 or maybe 4 year deal. He is not likely to age well offensively and his already below average defense is just going to get worse.

    • mark4212 says:

I don’t think it will take more then a 3 or 4 year deal at maybe 10 mil a year. He’s not being talked about like a superstar like had been 3 years ago. He’s a guy who will hit 250-270 with a near 400 OBP and smack 40 HR and 100 RBI a year and K 1,000 Time’s

      • toomanyuniforms says:

He and Ryan Howard could also power their respective stadiums with clean, renewable energy from the rampant whiffing.

Howard, he ain’t, but for some reason, I just like the idea of the flashy, Reyes-led late-choking Mets adding a big, slow (these days) lump of Kingman. It’s so out of place, it works.

      • Gina says:

I don’t care if he K’s 2000 times if his OBP is still .370+

        • mark4212 says:

Oh I know, I was saying it because he hasn’t changed in 3 years. But 3 years ago he was this hot to trot superstar.

In fact he only K’d 50 more times then Carlos Delgado. For good measure he K’d 35 times less then howard.

I was saying for what he is, he isn’t being highly pursued at all from what i read.

  19. stickguy says:

I take Dunn. But only if he is annointed as the 1B replacement for Delgado (and preferably in 2009!)

  20. shudderWINGS says:

LOL. Four years and 52 million for Varitek? LOL

That’s phenomenal. Wasn’t it said that the Red Sox are hesitant to offer him two years at 14 million?

    • fongulalou says:

In the history of this great game you can count on one hand
Catchers over 35 who played everyday and gave ANY production at the plate and still have fingers left over.
You know Varitek and his agent are nuts if they think ANYONE is giving them more than two years.
b/t/w, I wouldn’t want him even at that. He’s done.
