Any chance we can pry Matt Capps away from The Pirates? Don't think he is available, but I wonder if you could tempt Pittsburgh with an offer of Niese and Nick Evans with say an Aaron Heilman for someone like Capps. Young and cheap.

Evans and Carp project to be everyday players? Since when? And considering Carp hasn't hit for any power yet why would an AL team want him as a 1b/dh prospect?

I don't even see why there is competition with this. K-rod should be priority, first choice hands down!
Lets take a look and ask these question to yourself
Fuentes, Street, Putz, or K-rod
-Who is and can be the most dominant closer out of all of them?
-Who has accomplished the most in a young career?
-Who's going to cost alot of prospects?
-Are you worried about age? Decrese of effectivness while finishing up their contract?
We'll in my opinion K-rod is the obvious answer for the mets.
We have a gaping hole of a need.
He's young, dominant, already proven, availible and nobody really superseeds him based on ability or price.
Fuetes' price is fairly close to K-rod's anyway where as we have the money and K-rod beats him anyday.
The Mets have the money to spend.
For Street and Putz you have to give up numerous prospects where a free agent you don't(we'll get back the draft pick back anyway if ollie isn't signed), and with any of them you have to pay them eventually.
Considering K-Rod's price is similar to 33 year old Fuetes I propose this deal that I think would satisfy both sides needs..:
2009 $14.5 mil'
2010 $14.5 mil'
2011 $14.5 mil' (player may opt out after 3rd year)
2012 $15.5 mil'
2013 $ 17 mil (team option) (turns to player option if records 150 saves as a met)

You would really rather sign Fuentes to 4 years or trade away 2-3 young players for Putz, forget even talking about KRod than sign the Big Unit to a 1 year deal.

When he was healthy last year he was actually very good. Still has good strikeout numbers, pitching less innings could keep him healthy and even make him more effective. Name one closer, besides Lidge that was signed as a FA to a big contract with a new team and has been successful. Maybe BJ Ryan but he has been hurt often. Relievers in general and specifically closers are found on the scrap heap or traded for a bag of peanuts.

Fun fact.

Over the past 3 years Fuentes has a significantly lower WHIP and the same opponent BA as K-Rod... he also happened to pitch in Colorado, which isn't as great a HR hitters park as it used to be but still very advantageous to the hitter.

I'd rather sign Fuentes at 3 years than K-Rod at 5 for sure...

K-Rod is a good closer, probably right on the fringe of the Top 5 but Fuentes is in the Top 10 as well...
