That's why they aren't trading Zito just yet. They haven't had him long enough to justify eating that much of the contract. Once they've had him another 2 years or so, then they can eat a crapload of it and it won't be that a big deal, but to eat half of the contract right now would be for only one year of pitching, and they will never do that.

Of course the contract is a problem. Like I said, the Giants would have to pick up a good amount of it in any deal.

No, the problem with Zito is FIVE years and over 100 MILLION left on the K. That's not regular crazy, that's something special crazy.

Suggestions like Byrnes if the D'backs would really move him (friends in AZ seem to think it possible)

Juan Pierre and Gary Matthews also aren't that bad. Pierre had a down year but his speed is amazing and he is allegedly a great clubhouse guy. Hey, not complaining at all when benched in September showed some character.

Dodgers also could use a 2B with Kent going bye bye and Hu or Dewitt not quite ready.

Ramon Hernandez is a nice option too if the O's move Brian Roberts.
Ahh, this is fun. Also, helps stop the tears when I think about 08

So, I have a crazy suggestion.

It starts with a B and ends with arry Zito.

Giants need a 2B because their options stink more than Castillo does. The Mets need a back-of-the-rotation starter. And Zito, though he had a disgusting year last year, showed flashes. Moreover, you can probably make the Giants pick up a good half of his contract.

The problem with Zito has been that he lost the strike zone. But that's something that can be fixed. From a pure "stuff" standpoint, Zito's still pretty much there. Plus curve, plus change, bad fastball -- basically as it's always been. Posted his lowest HR rate in years last season. Take out the walks, and he's a decent pitcher.

I know we're always wary of taking on projects (see: Zambrano), but some similar projects have worked out very well for the Mets (see: Maine, Perez, R. Hernandez, Oliver)

You guys are right on top of it. When Hudson is hitting .280 with 8 HR and almost nothing run production and getting paid 10 million a season? People will be trying to dump him and he will be LESS atractive than Castillo.

I don't mind the idea of bringing in Jones for Castillo. It's one year hit or miss in LF and if he does not work out maybe other moves can be made.

Amen to that. I've always liked Byrnes and I think he's a great back to back counter part to church. One bat 6, one 7. One bat left, one bat right. One play left, one play right. And with him we'd have no doubtibly the best defensive outfeild in the national leage not to mention a solid lineup. I think snieder is plently when it comes from great defensively and sub-par but yet acceptible offensively. So no, I don't think catcher is a problem.
I truely believe Murphy can and will be our starting second basemen next year. I don't see why people are so sceptical of that. He's a natural infeilder so it's not all that new to him. Just pessimistic people believe he isn't based of what they see of him in the majors. Don't say he doesn't have range b/c he is fairly deceptivly fast. And I just don't think he can produce powerfully enough to be a 1st basemen or everyday left feilder. But considering you have a fairly good hitter I just feel its a waste to put him anywhere else but second.
Where as I do not think he just should be handed the job but compete or share the job while learning from a vetern presence such as Eckstien or Easly. If matured fully by the break the counter part could be held as bait at the deadline. Usually somebody'll be looking for a vetern infeilder.
