Relief Pitcher: Mets and others like Cordero
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 7, 2008 2:40 pm

According to Bill Ladson of MLB.com, ‘The Angels, Mets, Rangers and Tigers are interested in Chad Cordero, and each team has asked to look at his medical records.’

He had surgery in July to repair a torn labrum, missed the rest of the season, and is expected to be ready for Spring Training.

“Cordero’s first choice would be to sign with the Angels,” explains Ladson, “because he is from Anaheim and grew up an Angels fan.”

However, he adds, “Cordero also wouldn’t mind having a reunion with Mets general manager Omar Minaya.”

According to Ken Davidoff in Newsday, the Mets will also ‘investigate’ free-agent set-up men LHP Joe Beimel, RHP Juan Cruz and Cordero.

The 26–year-old Cordero has yet to finish a season with an ERA above 3.36 in his six-year career, during which he has been successful 83 percent of the time in save opportunities, while striking out 292 batters in 320 innings.

As long as thought of as a wild card.. and not a sure thing.. then sure why not…

That’s a tough surgery to come back from.

  2. I’d be willing to roll the dice with Cordero. Maybe his recovery doesn’t work out, but if he’s even 75% the pitcher he was before last season, he’d be a major upgrade over the setup crew we’ve seen lately.

Onceagain…sign everyone just dont guarantee them a spot on the roster, dont only bring in 7 relievers AND dont say “we dont need Beimel we alreayd have Feliciano….release whichever is worse in spring training!!!

  4. Fiya Minaya says:

Sure… as a minor league invite. Nothing more.

  5. ravi3 says:

Cruz is a very appealing option to me…Hopefully Omar can bring him aboard

  6. jaydh says:

Give me beimel and cruz. Then get Putz, FRod, or Fuentes to close. Bullpen fixed.

    • Deaner says:

I’d like for them to sign k rod, trade for putz, keep joe smith, feliciano, and let sanchez, ayala, stokes, cordero, long man battle out the rest of the spots

      smith/feliciano
      putz
      krod

      • BBmetsfreak36 says:

no way in achhhh eee double hockey sticks are we getting putz and Krod. That just doesnt happen.

        • Deaner says:

          And why not?

The only way you could get two closers to play for your team is if you trade for one of them. Gives the mets insurance against injury and instantly gives them one of the best back rotations in baseball.

        • MetLifer says:

Closers do not want to go from closing to becoming a setup man. This isn’t fantasy baseball! It’s just not going to happen.

        • mark4212 says:

Putz was a set-up man first, then became a closer who saved 40 games, and was put back into a setup role late last year due to injuries which made him ineffective as a closer. So to trade for him, sign Fuentes or F/K-rod and have them as the basic 8-9 would be feasible and do-able. Will it happen, i doubt it.

I want nothing to do with feliciano. The dude can get out only lefties, Can’t even sniff getting out a righy. Pretty much a waste of a body until the postseason. And even though he held lefties to a low batting average they had almost a .300 OBP. Righties hit 350 in 98 AB’s against him. He’s not even worth the spot.

I’d keep joe smith because he is young. Although his stats are also very skewed to get out righties. His numbers against lefties are awful. Hopefully he can learn to get out lefties, if not i want him back to the minors until he does.

I don’t want any of these guys who can’t get out of an inning, if it goes lefty, right, right. It’s just rediculous. You have what 7 relief pitchers minus the closer typically. Why are 2 wasted on guys who can’t get more then one person out an inning. I mean Smith appeared in 82 games and pitched only 62 innings. That’s a joke. Feliciano was even worse with 89 games and 62 innings. NO more of that. In the Playoffs Fine, in Late September in a tight playoff chase fine. Not for a full season.

UGH. Just thining about seeing 8 RP’s come in to get 9 outs is making me sick to my stomach. And you wonder why they struggled.

    • How do ppl keep doing this?

      There’s no F-Rod!

      It’s K-Rod!!!!

  7. No brainer. Sign Cordero.

Sign Fuentes, 4 years if you have to.

Do whatever it takes to get Darren Oliver to come back.

    That’s a major upgrade.

    • MetLifer says:

      1. Cordero is coming off injury
      2. Fuentes is 33… At the end of his contract he’ll be 37..38.. same as Wags. We all saw how that turned out.
      3. Oliver is 38..

We need to get younger.. not older!

      • Cordero is coming off an injury, but hes def worth rolling the dice on, and Fuentes may be 33, but him and Wags are twop completley different players. one, Wags is 5′11 and relied on his fastball, While Fuentes is 6′4. As for Darren, he did a great job in 06 but he is 38 so..

id like to sign cruz, lyon, cordero, and beimel then trade heilman and a low prospect to the rays for edwin jackson

  9. JerryKoosman says:

    OMG.

    Another Expo / National player?

Have we acquired every single player Omar met in that system?

I just wish he worked for another (read: successful) organization before returning to Los Mets.

    Same old story…

    • Gina says:

“Have we acquired every single player Omar met in that system?”

Nope, but hopefully Sizemore and Brandon Phillips are next on Omar’s list.

  10. LetsGoMets123 says:

I like Cordero. Not as a closer, but a 7th or 8th inning setup guy. Roll the dice give him a one year 3 million contract with an option. Low risk, very high reward.

  11. nyj0126 says:

Signing Cordero is a good option as long as he’s not the guy we’re relying on. He can’t be slotted into the 7th or 8th inning role just because of his name. He needs to prove he’s healthy and can still pitch. I’d give him a cheaper contract on a one year deal. Maybe a team or vesting option.

  12. since1963 says:

Go after Cordero, by all means, but nothing expensive. Incentives, incentives.

Several teams are interested in Heilman. Oblige them.

Beimel and Cruz would be worth going after, maybe Putz (though that name!). I agree, keep Smith; let Stokes have another shot. Stick with youth whenever possible, which means Fuentes may not be worth it.

  13. oleosmirf says:

the mets need to sign Derek Lowe

he’s a perfect #2-3 starter and considering Citi field is supposed to be a pitchers park his sinker should do wonders here.

Next the mets have to either trade for a closer or sign K-Rod or Fuentes and add 2-3 arms to the pen

Then if the Mets trade for a closer then you sign Orlando Hudson and if they sign a closer you trade for Freddie Sanchez. He’s not a great player, but he’s doesn’t strike out, hits for a high average (2 years removed from a .344 avg), plays good defense and shouldnt cost too much.

Finally you dump castillo and look for a 5th starter. Maybe the mets can get Dontrelle or Mulder at a bargain cost or even Pedro at a incentive-laden contract. Jason Marquis would be a perfect option. Niese isnt ready yet.
