News: Brewers Hire Willie

by Regis Courtemanche

According to Jon Heyman at SI.com, the Brewers have hired Willie Randolph as their bench coach.

Randolph, as quoted by ESPN, said:

“I’m excited, looking forward to this next challenge and getting to work. I love teaching and I’m passionate about being in the game. Eventually, I do want to get back to managing. I didn’t really want to wait around. … I thought it was best to make this move.”

Randolph has an agreement with the Brewers that if he gets another managerial offer, he can take it.

Smart move for him. This puts him in a better position to manage a team in the future.

rustyjr November 8, 2008 at 10:13 pm

yeah maybe he will learn some situational coaching but honestly this can only be good for him because with macha – af ormer pitching coach maybe willie will learn the proper way to use to bullpen

HOFMets57 November 9, 2008 at 1:23 am

I can see it now…

Mets v. Brewers, Game 7 NLCS 2009…

and we lose and watch Willie Randolph celebrating with his players…

Only the Mets.

rustyjr November 9, 2008 at 6:14 am

i guess u r a eternal optimist lol

Razor Shines November 10, 2008 at 7:16 am

“Only the Mets.”

Also must be one of those fans that only knows his own team and does not realize the same things happen to other teams every year. Like a coach coming back to haunt you, an awful trade, a bad player succeeding elsewhere, etc.

And this hasn’t even happened.

RodKanehl November 9, 2008 at 11:29 am

Get yur facts right before you blast. When Randolph had a bullpen he could trust in ‘06 he used it fine. You’re just like the Wilpons, blaming the manager f the total failure of the GM to keep the bullpen at a major league caliber.

Tidewater November 9, 2008 at 1:47 pm

Randolph made a lot of mistakes. And yes, he misused the bullpen among those mistakes.

rustyjr November 9, 2008 at 4:33 pm

rod i agree with you – but if i remember correctly in 06 our starting pitching was just as circumspect -but the pen did toe the line – until sanchez got hurt – hernandez was ok and mota was lights out until the playoffs but still like i said we had a meltdown in sept that year also

Cactus November 8, 2008 at 9:55 pm

I guess someone who was too good to ever manage in the minors finally realized he’s not getting another team to give him a big league job without more experience. Only the Mets would do that, as they were looking for someone to work cheap since they had to pay Art Howe.

rustyjr November 8, 2008 at 10:12 pm

yeah i guess “wave em home willie” swallowed his pride (or was it the subway ham sangwich?

BringBackDaveTelgheder November 9, 2008 at 9:35 am

Yes, it’s fresh-toasted!

HOFMets57 November 9, 2008 at 1:24 am

Agreed.

rustyjr November 8, 2008 at 10:32 pm

on a serious note – i wonder if this means the mets don’t have to pay him the rest of that contract – we could put that money to good use

PelfreyCyYoung09 November 8, 2008 at 10:35 pm

i was wondering the same :o

rustyjr November 8, 2008 at 10:39 pm

it would only be fair – i mean he is a working man again – he doesn’t need the mets to pay him not to work (damn i’d like to be paid not to work lol)

DAG November 8, 2008 at 10:53 pm

Mets will probably have to pay him the difference between what they owed him and what the Brewers are paying him.

rustyjr November 8, 2008 at 10:55 pm

you might be right but i’m wondering if the mets could void it – u know all that freekin legaleeze

TheBigStapler November 9, 2008 at 11:07 am

That’s a good question. Having Randolph’s $2 million contract cleared from the budget would be nice. That money can be used in so many ways.

halgo November 8, 2008 at 11:29 pm

Macha’s job just got a lot easier. All he has to do is the exact opposite of Randolph’s advice.

HOFMets57 November 9, 2008 at 1:27 am

Willie pushed all the right buttons in 2006 (until listening to Jerry Manuel’s advice to bat Cliff Floyd instead of bunting), so the players, in my opinion, should shoulder most of the blame.

Heilman, leading the way, of course…

rustyjr November 9, 2008 at 6:17 am

yes he did but remember that lull in sep when he couldn’t buy a win to clinch the division? and we were losing to the marlins and the pirates !!!

Simon November 9, 2008 at 3:40 pm

Yeah, Willie didn’t hit at all that month. To say nothing of his pitching.

(Joking, joking)

rustyjr November 9, 2008 at 4:34 pm

didn’t need the sarcasm meter for that one lol

TurboDan November 9, 2008 at 1:43 am

Now, if the Brewers resign Guillermo Mota, Willie and Mota redux ‘09!

rustyjr November 9, 2008 at 6:15 am

we can only hope we can only hope lol

nobeers November 9, 2008 at 6:16 am

I can already see it, Phillies won the last WS and now the Brewers will win the next.

rustyjr November 9, 2008 at 6:19 am

highly doubt it especially with no cc or sheets and they might trade prince

steadyeddie November 9, 2008 at 9:58 am

In the spirit of the new kinder, gentler spirit, I say, good luck Willie. I didnt like ya in NY but I’m movin on. Hope you do as well and LETS GO METS!
Omar; let’s start dealin’
Time is of the essense

cgpublic November 9, 2008 at 10:24 am

Best of luck, Willie!

Even though were far from the top-tier manager the Mets needed to overcome their fundamental flaws, it’s also clear that you weren’t the deciding factor for the 07 collapse.

After another abysmal September, we all know now that Omar’s dogs will lie down with anyone at the helm when the division is on the line.

Let’s hope we can weed out the malcontents and introduce inspired baseball to CitiField.

RodKanehl November 9, 2008 at 11:32 am

Great post. Unfortunately the one needing to be weeded out the most for developing a team of chokes, just got a 4 year extension.

dominicanboy08 November 9, 2008 at 11:38 am

I read that the Reds are interested in brian schneider. what can we get from them? I know its not much, but still I dont like schneider…Schneider for Bill Bray?

TRex23 November 9, 2008 at 12:18 pm

Great!

Now we don’t have to worry about the Brewers winning next year.

What a joke — all the people who think Randolph got a bad deal from the Mets. He was a terrible manager and he was a bad hire in the first place.

Good riddance.

zen November 9, 2008 at 1:10 pm

and you give yourself away.

with or without you.

the mets collapse.

with or without you.

kingman 26 November 9, 2008 at 1:56 pm

I think Bono is right about this….

LOL!

rustyjr November 9, 2008 at 4:35 pm

i was thinking more of the lines of “don’t treat me bad” by firehouse lol

kingman 26 November 9, 2008 at 7:34 pm

Or just “Stay Away” by Nirvana….

metsfan1 November 9, 2008 at 1:57 pm

This just goes to show you how desperate he is. He has been turned down 3 TIMES in his life to become Brewers manager and then he signs on to become a bench coach. Willie would have been better off taking a high level managerial position with a solid team and come back in a year or two. I don’t see how this advances his chances or managing in MLB especially after the ‘07 collapse and horrible ‘08 start.

TRex23 November 9, 2008 at 2:27 pm

There have been quite a few rumors the Willie doesn’t interview well. That he doesn’t come prepared. That makes sense, because I never felt that he was prepared to manage the Mets. I always felt that he thought that because he played for the “mighty Yankees” that he was qualified to manage. He never managed a day in the minors. Never paid his dues. And he was stiff as a board as a manager of the Mets. I never liked him and I never felt that he was honest in his interviews when he was Mets’ manager. He will never be successful wherever he goes, but don’t worry, it won’t be HIS fault.

rustyjr November 9, 2008 at 4:16 pm

yeah willie woulda been the manager of the reds first but he thought the contract they offered him was an insult

rustyjr November 9, 2008 at 5:17 pm

btw guys john perrato of baseball prospectus predicts that Raul Ibanez and Francisco Rodriguez and orlando hudson will be Mets

TRex23 November 9, 2008 at 5:30 pm

3 more Latin players. So much for diversity.

rustyjr November 9, 2008 at 5:33 pm

uh t-rex sorry to tell u but orlando hudson is as latino as rusty staub xavier nady davey johnson and kaz ishi lol

kingman 26 November 9, 2008 at 7:26 pm

Hudson is from SC and Ibanex is from NYC. But don’t let actual facts stand in the way of letting us know where you stand on really good players who happen to be Latino….even if they really aren’t Latino….

KRod and Ibanez would be awesome pickups….I say Murph and the Magic Tones should play 2nd and spend the Hudson money on pitching…maybe some Latin pitchers like Lowe.

Lowe’s Latin, isn’t he TRex??

TRex23 November 10, 2008 at 9:48 am

See my comment below.

phukthephills November 9, 2008 at 6:55 pm

i wouldnt mind that but i dont see the mets gettinga left handed bat in ibanez unless they trade away church or schnieder

kingman 26 November 9, 2008 at 7:32 pm

We hit lefty pitching well….and Ibanez hit lefty pitching well last year.

Our only weak spot was lefty bats against lefty arms, which made up less than 9% of our at bats last year. Evans/Tatis can give Church a rest against tough lefties so we aren’t too overloaded with lefty bats in some of the games we face lefty starters.

Ibanez would be great and relatively cheap, and then we could afford KRod and still have dough left over for more pitching help.

phukthephills November 9, 2008 at 7:03 pm

and they cant get 3 type A free agents

chico November 9, 2008 at 7:46 pm

It sounds like they can this year, there are enough agents filing that we can indeed sign 3 Type A FA’s.

rustyjr November 9, 2008 at 9:02 pm

yeah but do we really want to give up all those draft picks?

steadyeddie November 9, 2008 at 8:32 pm

Jets are HOT
I will be in Foxboro Thur PM

kingman 26 November 9, 2008 at 9:13 pm

And the Giants are off to a good start pounding the Iggles….small solace, but it will be nice to see a Philly team get their butts kicked….

rustyjr November 9, 2008 at 9:17 pm

go giants !!! no da bears !! if eli was a president he’s be baberaham lincon lol

kingman 26 November 9, 2008 at 9:22 pm

LOL…that may have been Mike Myers’ all-time funniest line…

stemog1 November 9, 2008 at 10:43 pm

I think they can sign three because they are losing one of their own. I may be wrong and I know I’ll be be corrected, or burned at the stake, but I think that’s the case.

alex.242 November 10, 2008 at 8:46 am

guys, willie randolph is one of the worst manager i have ever seen!!!! we could’ve walked all over the cardinals if it wasn’t for him “trusting” mota in game 2, or using wagner in game 6 with a 4 run lead!! he was terrible, never liked him since 2005, plus, don’t forget that in that sept we also choked away a opprtunity to make the playoffs!!!! HE IS GARBAGE!!

TRex23 November 10, 2008 at 9:35 am

Hey, we all make mistakes. It wouldn’t be the first time I goofed up.

The thing is, I wouldn’t care if the whole team was latino, except I’m concerned about the chemistry. We don’t need another Beltran or Delgado type in the clubhouse. We need a fiery vocal leader. You can’t win with a bunch of quiet nice guys. And it’s unfair that David Wright has to bear the burden of every media inquest — not only because he’s one of the most popular and accessible Mets, but because he is one of only a handful that will actually talk to the media and give thoughtful answers rather than the same brief cliche.

Maybe Hudson is the guy to shake things up. What do I know. I just think that Omar has tunnel vision sometimes. I really think that his “comfort level” with the latin players can sometimes cloud his vision and cause him to close his mind to other options. That’s the way I see it watching the Mets for 40 years. If someone wants to be self righteous and say that’s a bigoted attitude then what can I say? At least for now we are still allowed to have an opinion and express it in this country.

kingman 26 November 10, 2008 at 11:04 am

Of course we are allowed to express our opinions…and mine is that it matters not whether the players are white, black, Latino, or Latino-American like Ibanez. Sorry if it came off as self-righteous to you, but expressing anti-Latino sentiment is ridiculous to me.

And from all accounts, KRod is VERY fiery, and Ibanez is an excellent clubhouse guy.

Delgado is not a vocal leader, in my opinion, because he is not a vocal leader, not because of his ethnicity. And I would say that Beltran IS a leader, he is just not a rah-rah type guy.

And as for Omar’s “comfort level” with Latino players, perhaps that is part of the reason we have Santana and Beltran, two of the very best in the game at their positions, and why Reyes signed a VERY reasonable long-term extension.

TRex23 November 10, 2008 at 11:39 am

I wasn’t complaining about Latin players. Santana and Beltran are great and I have no quibbles with either one of them. Ollie Perez is one of my favorite Mets and I have defended him on this forum in great detail and have been slagged unmercifully for having the audacity to say that the Mets should re-sign him and pointing out that in many statistical areas he is comparable to Scott Kazmir. I’m a huge fan of Fernando Tatis and I would gladly even take on the drama known as Manny Ramirez. And I’d trade Castillo and others for Jose Guillen in a minute. Does that make me a bigot?

My problem is with guys like Luis Castillo. That was a MAJOR, MAJOR mistake on Omar’s part and for the life of me, I CANNOT think of a BASEBALL reason why he signed Castillo to a FOUR YEAR DEAL!! THAT is the kind of deal that makes me question Omar’s vision. You don’t think that David Eckstein would have signed a 4 year deal to play second base here? That probably would have been a bad deal too, but don’t you think we could have gotten more than 73 hits out of Eckstein?

I’ll take an all Latin team if it’s made up of winners — guys that can play the game. I stand behind what I said. Remember last year? Reed Johnson wasn’t good enough for the Mets to take a shot on — for nothing! He may not be great, but he played with the division winning Cubs ALL year and hit .300. You don’t think having him in left field everyday would have resulted in an extra 2 or 3 wins over the course of the season? How much did the Mets lose the division by?

I think Omar should invest in good players no mater what their race or nationality is.

kingman 26 November 10, 2008 at 12:09 pm

Well, I agree with pretty much all of that, I really do, and I appreciate the posts.

Castillo was a mistake of truly historic proportions, but, to the Mets’ credit, at least we played other guys at the end of the year, and Murphy is playing 2B in winter ball. If Slappy is still around, he will probably be a very expensive backup in 2009. Slappy did have a good career until the last two years, and played on good teams, and I think it was a good move when we picked him up. But that 4-year extension was utter insanity.

I like Ollie a lot too, but wonder what he would be like after getting the mas sive payday…but I do not think the door is closed on getting him back.

And your last sentence could not say it any better.

Sorry if I overreacted to your original post, which maybe did not really enunciate your overall ideas.
