News: Rockies trade Matt Holliday to A’s
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 10, 2008 2:28 pm

The A’s are close to acquiring Rockies OF Matt Holliday, according to Jon Heyman at SI.com.

oh, Billy Beane, you’re nothing if you aren’t active

by the way, at first, the SI report said, The A’s have acquired Holliday,’ and was then changed to, ‘The A’s are closing in on a deal,’ which is interesting

In 139 games for the Rockies, the 28–year-old Holliday hit .321 with 25 HR and 88 RBI, while hitting .308 away from Coors Field.

i wonder if Huston Street is involved in this deal, as it seems like he would be a nice addition for the Rockies, though that would go against beane’s style

Update3:15 pm

In a report for FoxSports.com, Ken Rosenthal writes, “Over the weekend, the teams discussed A’s outfielder Carlos Gonzalez, left-hander Greg Smith and reliever Huston Street, according to one source, but it is not known if any or all of those players will be included in the package for Holliday.”

Rosenthal adds, “The A’s are not acquiring him with the intention of flipping him or even trading him in July. The team is in position to increase its payroll to as much as $80 million, and plans to contend next season.”

Update3:47 pm

Heyman’s story has once again been revised, no reading, “The A’s have acquired Holliday.”

Update4:07 pm

In a report for the Denver Post, Troy Renck reports the two teams have agreed in principle to swap Street, Gonzalez, and relief pitcher Greg Smith for Holliday.

Update4:34 pm

According to Scott Miller at CBSSports.com, citing ‘one source,’ if the Rockies end up acquiring Street from the A’s, ‘they are prepared to turn around and trade him — though to which team he wasn’t sure.’

Got to love Billy Beane.. has more young players then he knows what to do with.. now grabs Holliday.. can either compete with him during the season.. trade him mid season.. or take the draft picks the year after.

    • Steviefan84 says:

I don’t understand how getting Holliday makes any sense in that ballpark and in that division where the Angels run away with the division by 20 or so games for a one year rental. I guess we shall see what good ol’ Beane has up his sleeve.

      • stilltheEWM says:

Look the Rays… you can’t say for sure whose winning a division

      • The Slider says:

Plus, why would Beane want a one-year max rental . . . especially if he gave up young players in return. Makes no sense to me.

        • stilltheEWM says:

Cause he can flip him at the deadline or get two draft picks if he doesnt work out….

        • HOFMets57 says:

          Ditto.

Beane is way smarter than the average GM. Reports indicate Gonzalez disappointed to a certain extent. With already declining relievers like Street and G. Smith, Beane now has the ability to trade away prospects whom he believes won’t make an impact on the Major League level for someone almost EVERY team covets (Holliday).

Even if he can’t find some nimwit GM to take him at the trading deadline next July, he gets 2 fresh draft picks and another shot at acquiring better projectable talents in the draft.

Too bad, Omar’s resume consists of mostly getting non-contributing veterans like El Duque, Alou, Pedro, Castillo and half of his Montreal Expos roster..

        • just-mlb says:

          right…cuz omar’s resume doesn’t include…

          stealing delgado and loduca…church…maine…ollie…nady…
signing beltran…signing pedro who was lights out the first 2 years…getting johan….getting wagner…who was better than looper…getting duaner sanchez for jae wong seo lol….resigning wright and reyes to multi-year deals avoiding arbitration…stealing endy…
getting valentin off the scrap heap…same with tatis…
          drafting dan murphy,,,nick evans…..niese…fernando martinez…wilmer flores…mike pelfrey…joe smith…

        • Gina says:

Did we really steal Ollie considering we gave up Nady? that seems like a pretty even trade, especially considering what the Pirates traded for him. And we absolutely didn’t steal Church.

        • bucknersankles says:

          JUST-MLB,

GOOD FREAKIN BLOG, I HEAR THESE SO CALLED MET FAN’S DOGGING OMAR ALL THE TIME THEY FORGET WHAT IT WAS LIKE BEFORE OMAR, BEING AN AVID MET FAN FOR 37 YRS I REMEMBER OH SO WELL NOT COMPETING FOR YRS ON END NOW WE HAVE AN OWNER IN MR. FRED WILPON WHO NOT ONLY WANTS TO WIN BUT IS PUTTING HIS MONEY WHERE HIS MOUTH IS AND WE HAVE AN ASTUTE GM IN OMAR MINAYA WHO HAS BROUGHT US THE PLAYERS THAT HAVE ALLOWED US TO COMPETE SINCE 06 AND WHO IS CONTINUING TO PLACE US IN THE HUNT.

    • Gina says:

      cosign.

if there was ever any doubt that Billy Beane lives to confuse the he-ll out of baseball fans everywhere I think this squashes it.

      • stilltheEWM says:

We have to see who exactly he gave up.. but hes over flowing on young guys after the haren and swisher trades last year…

At the very least he’s getting a 1st rounder and supplemental pick draft… or he can even deal him at the deadline…

He’s made a living doing this with the Jermaine Dye, Johnny Damon’s, etc of the world…

        • Gina says:

Regardless of who he gave up I doubt it makes a dent in their farm system. They also got a few top prospects for Blanton and Harden.

        • starz31 says:

good point on Damon but he had Dye for almost 4 years.

        • stilltheEWM says:

Exactly.. if it doesnt make a dent.. why not go get this guy…

        • Coolpapabell says:

          ??????
Well, I can’t imagine they are going to sign him long term.

I guess that is good news for us. We can get that bat next year if we really want him, because it wasn’t a sign and trade.

I wonder if Beane spins him next at the trade deadline. I guess he can get some one at teh trade deadline or get that first rounder as he will surely be a type A free agent.

  2. bigchart333 says:

hope street isnt involved…i still want him for our 8th inning role to set up for K-Rod!

    • BBmetsfreak36 says:

Lemme get this straight. We barely have enough to get Street as a closer prospect wise. And now we’re playing K-Rod and tradeing for an expensive young closer in the 8th? Get your stuff straight.

  3. gorilla44 says:

The A’s may be gearing up for bigger payrolls in the future. They are likely moving into a new stadium in Fremont CA called Cisco Field that will give them more revenue and the ability to spend more. Holliday, who is relatively young, could be a cornerstone of the franchise for the near future.

    • Nate W. says:

more likely that in a year from now the A’s will get compensation draft picks when he signs with a different team. Or they will move him at the deadline for prospects they like.

  4. tonym says:

I hope Street is involved – he blows. Don’t want him here.

  5. Considering what Colorado was asking for from the Cardinals and the Phillies, Beane must have given up some interesting stuff.

  6. guierllNO MOta says:

I understand we cant compete with the A’s minor-league mlb ready talent-wise prospects…but the A’s still are bad with Holliday, this makes no sense unless they are gearing up for a 1997 Marlins run…and if they are, why havent they tried it the last 15 years when they were always just one player away

    • Gina says:

The A’s won 80 some games this year. And that was after trading like 3/5ths of their rotation. And with all the young players they have there’s no reason to think they wouldn’t have gotten better this year, and now that they have Holliday it’s almost guaranteed.

      • Gina says:

Nevermind I lied, they won 76 games, but still with a farm system overflowing with ml ready talent there’s no reason to think they wouldn’t have made it to at least above .500 next year.

    • …or maybe they are gearing up to do what the marlins did with piazza. just a thought.

    • Tidewater says:

“I understand we cant compete with the A’s minor-league mlb ready talent-wise prospects…”

But if we had any kind of long-term planning in this franchise we could some day.

This is my biggest frustration with the team — they never have enough internal parts for sustained success.

      • 4 prospects for Johan Santana has at least a little bit to do with that.

        • Tidewater says:

No, it really doesn’t as none of those guys is looking like they’ll have any real impact. When you look at the home-growns of the Rays, the Red Sox, the Phils, you see that losing players the “caliber” of what we gave up for Johan is laughable. The Twins got fleeced. There were more bodies pre-Johan, but not much more quality.

        • Gina says:

Agreed Tidewater, it would be one thing if we were trading prospects who went on to be productive major leaguers. But for the most part we’re trading guys that do nothing anyway.

  7. tonym says:

“The A’s may be gearing up for bigger payrolls in the future. They are likely moving into a new stadium in Fremont CA called Cisco”

That’s looking less likely all the time.

  8. starz31 says:

I don’t get his move…they will not re-sign him. They don’t dish out $100+ million contracts.

I guess they could try and move him at the deadline. I wonder what they gave up. Maybe a 1rst round pick after he walks is worth more to them than what they traded away.

    I’m confused.

  9. tonym says:

Is the startt of a 3 way trade?

There’s no way the A’s could ever sign him, it’s an alternative (3 way) to cashing him in at the deadline for less than they gave away…..

    • fongulalou says:

Ya know, for all the praise always heaped upon Beane
What has he won?–Whats the plan out there??

      • loqiel says:

        Truer words were seldom spoken.

      • Tidewater says:

He’s won a ton of playoff berths. And really, after that, it’s all a crap shoot.

        • Gina says:

True, but people would rather bash him than look at it objectively like that.

        • loqiel says:

I guess it all depends on what you qualify as doing something or winning. Considering eight teams make the playoffs now instead of four, making the playoffs isn’t that spectacular. Even the Brewers made the playoffs, and they’re baseball’s equivalent of the Clippers.

        • Gina says:

Considering we haven’t been able to make the post-season 3/4 years under Omar with nearly 4-5x their payroll and in a weaker league I consider making it with so little money spectacular.

        • loqiel says:

If the playoffs are such a crapshoot, and the A’s keep making it, then why haven’t they won it all recently? I mean, the odds have to come home sooner or later, right?

Money spent does not equal championships won, as you’ve so adeptly acknowledged. It’s how you use it. The fact is that Billy has gotten his team to the playoffs and they have flamed out repeatedly. In my opinion it’s no better than flaming out in September.

Making the playoffs doesn’t mean much. In the last ten years, only six teams have failed to make the playoffs at least once (Nats, Royals, Bucs, Blue Jays, Reds, Orioles). Or to put it another way, eighteen teams have made the playoffs at least once since 2006.

          Making the playoffs, spectacular? Hardly.

        • Tidewater says:

But how many teams have made it as repeatedly with that payroll? As for are the odds in his favor, I don’t really know how to calculate that, so I’ll leave it to someone smarter or with more time on their hands, or both.

I’m just saying for fans of a team that’s made the postseason 3 times in the last ten years — and 5 in the last 22 — dissing Billy Beane’s success rate seems foolish.

And if you think failing in the playoffs is similar to failing in September, I feel sorry for you. That is Yankee fan attitude and makes it very difficult to be happy with your team.

        • Reyes es el Rey says:

Nobody compares to the A’s and Twins’ front offices. Those franchises are simply outstanding.

      • Cactus says:

minaya is 1-4 in playoff births with a 4x larger payroll in a bad league and having been handed wright and reyes who have played for nearly free.

  10. chico says:

I’m wondering if he didn’t like what he could get for Street, so he sent him to Colorado and isn’t going to wait til the trade deadline to trade Holiday. Now he’s got a chip that everyone is clammering for and they will be beating down his door for him. He didn’t have that with Street, but he’s got one now. So now the highest bidder will get Holiday from Beane. Just my thoughts in trying to make sense of the madness.

  11. Heyman just changed the language to “closing in on trade” but he still seems pretty certain.

  12. zen says:

bad move. holliday is an over-rated coors field product.

no way they can pay him long-term. not to mention, he won’t be worth the huge deal he’ll get.

beane is over-rated too. tampa bay with no cash has been to a world series. the marlins have two ws titles and the twins are great every year with a couple of titles since the mets last win.

    beane + holliday = over-rated

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

He will probably trade him at the deadline for prospects or hold on to him for the draft picks. The guy is clearly an intelligent GM. He has put together teams that have won 91, 102, 103, 96, 91, 88, 93 games from 2000-2006 all while losing key contributors virtually every season. Is it his fault that his team couldn’t put the Yankees away in the NLDS? Yes the rays put together a great team and the marlins did in 03 (they basically bought 97) and yes the twins are good every year but what does that have to do with beane.

      • stilltheEWM says:

        Amen Zeile

      • zen says:

how many playoff series have his teams won? one?

the twins, marlins, and rays are his competition in terms of budget. beane is an good gm, but hardly as impressive as too many say he is.

        he’s pretty good. that’s it

        • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

Not saying hes John Schurholtz or Pat Gillick, but hes a top tier GM and that is more than I can say about Omar Minaya. I may be a little biased but I some what buy into his philosophy that he states in Moneyball about a GM being responsible for getting his team to the playoffs and then its a crap shoot. In which case he is doing better than the rays and marlins over the past 9 years.

      • Tidewater says:

Yes. These “hasn’t won a WS” arguments are really myopic. The fact is with very little Beane has put his team in a position to win year in and year out. That they haven’t gotten the ring probably has little to do with ol’ Billy.

        • zen says:

winning one playoff series is pathetic. he built weak-minded teams like the current mets.

        • Tidewater says:

Weak-minded. How very Zen of you. The fact of the matter is, it takes a ton of strong will to get to the majors in the first place. I think very few major league players are “weak minded.” It just sometimes seems that way when they lose.

        • kingman 26 says:

Zen, in the last few years the A’s have had to lose/trade/give up Giambi, Tejada, Hudson, Zito, Mulder, Harden, Haren, Blanton, and more I am forgetting.

This is 100% due to the owners not being willing to spend more money.

If Beane had half the budget of Omar or the genius in Boston, they would probably have a handful of rings right now.

Does Hudson, Harden, and Haren sound like the start of a good rotation if their ownership spent more??

What the A’s do every year after losing star player after star player is nothing short of amazing.

        • zen says:

a lot of successful people are lack toughness in tough spots. the current mets are in that category until they prove differently.

they collapsed two straight years. period.

i said beane was good. sorry. i don’t think he was just removed from the cross.

        • kingman 26 says:

LOL on the last sentence there…..

I was only commenting on what Beane has done with limited $$$ and losing a load of all-star players….

  13. tonym says:

    ^ good post.

  14. Joe Bacci says:

The news here is that the Phillies DID NOT get Holliday.

    • The other news might end up being that the Mets did not get Huston Street.

    • loqiel says:

I don’t think the Phillies were as close to obtaining him as everyone thought: they’ve been hesitant to deal any of their top flight prospects who they think are a year or two away (Marson, Donald, Carrasco), and they outright told the Rockies to go away when they wanted Victorino too.

Dealing Cardenas for Blanton was a steal for both sides: Beane wanted him and Outman, and the Phillies wanted a pitcher to fill Adam Eaton’s slot in the rotation, and they weren’t sure Happ was it. All Blanton did was not lose a game in the regular season or the playoffs while wearing the red pinstripes.

      • The Slider says:

My understanding is that the Rockies wanted Victorino or Werth and Carasco for a possibly one-year rental. The Phillies simply said “no thanks” and that was that.

  15. guierllNO MOta says:

I think we are about to read about a “Holliday and Street to the (insert team here) for 5 prospects” trade tomorrow…which for the Mets would cost at leas FMart, Murphy, Heilman and maybe Neise….im scared…I actually have no prob ridding of Murphy, sell high, he aint gonna hit 370 for his career, sell high..the other 3 are selling low right, so pelase hold onto Omar.

    • Ken Rosenthal, one of the more trustworthy rumorists, wrote an article last week about the A’s saying that they may increase their payroll to $80 million and that corner OF is one of their top priorities.

And today he is even saying that the A’s don’t plan on flipping Holliday.

This could be the start of a new Oakland A’s era. Beane With a Budget: The A’s Dynasty 2009-2015.

      • I can’t see it. If that was the case, why trade Haren, Harden, and Blanton?

        • Gina says:

Blanton because he’s worthless and the Phillies gave up way too much for him. Harden because he’s always injured and can’t pitch pa-ss 5 innings, Haren because the package the Diamondbacks gave up was insane.

        • Haren reeled in a giant package. Harden and Blanton left before the deadline because the A’s were no longer contending against the Angels and were able to sell the players over their normal value.

        • But also, I kind of agree with you. Beane has never been a buyer.

        • loqiel says:

If the Phillies don’t acquire Joe Blanton, they don’t win the World Series. I’d overpay for that, and so would you. Flags fly forever, no matter what you gave up for them.

  16. seth1280 says:

Rotoworld is stating that Huston Street, Sean Gallagher and Travis Buck are among the players we could see going to the Rockies in this deal.

I can’t see this deal happening without the Rockies getting closer. By the way, I like Dye for a one year stopgap, but I would not mortgage our future for a one year contract. With day and age of greedy players, Dye will certainly want more money to sign the following year.

  17. seth1280 says:

Rotoworld is now saying that lefty Greg Smith is in the deal, so it may not be Gallagher.

  18. chico says:

Dye has a 2yr contract with a 1M buyout at the end of next season, so he’s already signed if we want him around again. Rosenthal is reporting that Beane has no intentions of trading Holliday now or at the deadline, but plans on using him to make a run, and wants to go after Furcal as well. It sounds like Oakland is trying to go Florida Marlins on us.

  19. IAmKeithHernandez says:

If Huston Street comes to NYC, will his name change to being pronounced “House-ton” Street?

  20. Huston Street is overrated, as a closer at least. The best thing he has going for him is his name. I doubt he’s involved in this trade.

  21. Sylar says:

According to Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports, it’s LHP Greg Smith, OF Carlos Gonzalez, and RHP Huston Street.

  22. Flushing_is_Burning says:

This came out of nowhere, they were not mentioned in any Holiday talk.

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

proving yet again that baseball writers aren’t nearly as smart or in the know as they would like us to believe.

“hey espn/fox sports/cbs sports guy this big name is available where will he end up?”
“the yanks or red sox with the mets a distant third”
“and said big name has just been reportedly traded to the A’s/cardinals/brewers”

  23. Fiya Minaya says:

No to Street and Fuentes- unless we pay and play them like the set up men that they are..

  24. Seavertheman says:

Scott Miller has it as a done deal. wwwDOTsportslineDOTcom/mcc/blogs/entry/6270335/11618874 .

  25. roman411 says:

    I didn’t want him.

There is some good in this: He’s out of the NL now.

  26. steadyeddie says:

    The market is open!
Mr. Omar, the clock is tickin’
Don’t want to miss the boat…
    Let’s get it on!

  27. Gina says:

Although fwiw if the package being reported is true the A’s got a major steal.

  28. phukthephills says:

lets just forget about all of this and go sign krod…we must get a closer this offseason and the best one available is krod..just get him and get it done with.

    • kingman 26 says:

I agree and I think it is going to happen….I think Omar is gauging the market so as not to overpay, and like with Beltran and Johan, it might not happen right away, but I really think it is going to happen.

KRod seems like a good fit for NY, his agent has already indicated they are willing to negotiate down from their original demands, and if we can get him for something like 4/60 or 5/70 or less, it is going to happen.

  29. ugbmets21 says:

    I WANT MANNY!

if the phills get him, we will never win the east for atleast 4 more years…

manny is the best righthanded batter out there and we need that bat

    MANNY AND K-ROD…lets go omar

    • pedro4545 says:

I agree….we have to do something drastic this offseason

      • Gina says:

Because that usually works out for teams?

        • rustyjr says:

yeah pedro remember how we got drastic from 92-94??

        • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

remember how we got drastic from 2005-2006. then did nothing drastic after 06 and suffered the worst collapse in the history of sports.

        • Gina says:

We didn’t make the play-offs in 05 either. And if you’re saying we need to make a drastic move every off-season to make the play-offs then that says their must be something inherently flawed with this team to begin with.

  30. CaseStreet says:

    Say hello to Adam Dunn!

  31. KingWright says:

    Holliday must be so thrilled.

  32. The Slider says:

The end result of all this analyses is that (1) Huston Street is probably still available if we still think we want him (I’m not so sure we are … or ever were); and (2) a player who we probably had no chance of getting, for “all of the above” reasons, has been traded. Ok. We’re still in the same boat we were in when the day started.

    Ho-hum.

  33. rustyjr says:

btw guy the philths resigned scott (not jane) eyre

  34. phukthephills says:

    Krod, manny, biemel and affeldt

sign em all and trade our prospects for some starters
biemel and affeldt shouldnt cost too much…manny and krod will but think about this lineup
reyes, beltran, manny, delgado, wright, murph, church, schnieder
    something along those lines…its rediculous

and our pen will be that much better
    krod
    biemel
    smith
    affeldt
    stokes
    parnell
    something like that

then the rotation…it may seem like a lot but i think we would be able to sign garland on top of that…hes type B and really isnt a proven pitcher…i dont think he will be too expensive. then trade for someone cheap to be a #5 guy
    johan, pelf, maine, garland, whoever

    krod – 13 mil
    manny – 20 mil
    garland – 7 mil?
biemel and affeldt – 3 to 5 mil?
that comes out to about 40 mil in total
im not sure how much we are losing but i dont see y we cant spend…this is NY…we should be rich and should be willing to spend our money…if our payroll goes up 10 to 20 mil next year big deal…we will be that much better!

    • The Slider says:

You forgot about Derrick Lowe. I want him in the mix.

    • Gina says:

Beimel is horrible why do people want him?

      • phukthephills says:

take a look at his stats from last yr and then get back to me…he was a solid reliever and should not cost alot

        • Gina says:

Umm have you looked at his stats from last year? He had a 1.45 WHIP and a .266 BAA. That’s kind of terrible. Not to mention a high walk rate and a very low k rate. Exactly what stats are you looking at that’s making him look like a solid reliever?

  35. stickguy says:

I agree that it is nice he is off the market to cut down on the endless speculation (since he made no sense for the Mets anyway). although it is fun to see the panic starting about the mets missing out on all deals now!

  36. metz1 says:

let me offer you the WWE all star baseball team ……at 1st base the undertaker/and 2nd base ..matt hardy/ at 3rd base……….triple hhh……….at catcher the big show………………….and in the outfield………..bautista……..edge……….and rey mysterio!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  37. metz1 says:

    oops forgot shortstop!

  38. metz1 says:

but seriously folks imagine …someone charging the mound with big show grabbing them from behind the plate.

mets will end up with street and that will give them flexability to get manny and other help.

    mark my words!

    • phukthephills says:

10 bucks says that wont happen

      • The Slider says:

I agree with you. I say “no” to Street., “yes” to Fuentes, Cruz, maybe KRod, maybe Woods … I know I’m forgetting someone else right now …. hmmmm.

I’ll be back on that one.

  40. ugbmets21 says:

well phills just signed scott eyre!

  41. ugbmets21 says:

also, miami just traded olson and willingham to arizona for bonifacio.

  42. Gland says:

Did i just see that the marlins traded olsen and willingham to the nats?

  43. mdemaio says:

So Beane basically turned Haren’s two years plus an option and Street’s 1 year + arbitration into one year of Matt Holiday (who can be retained, traded or lost with 2 first round draft picks as compensation), plus good young guys they control for 5-6 years: a top lefty pitching prospect (Brett Anderson), an organizational player of the year (Chris Carter), plus Dana Eveland (another lefty who gave them 168 innings and 9 wins last year) and Aaron Cunningham… he does such a good job at balancing the organization’s short and long term needs and managing its salary constraints…

    • The Slider says:

Now I think I understand. Beane is lying in wait to swindle us at the July 31st trade deadline in a deal for Holliday. He’ll ask for some combination of Niese, Parnell and Heilman or maybe on of them and F-Mart. And we’ll probably do it if we just wading in water.

  44. alex.242 says:

who cares where holliday goes.. the mets were never in it for him anyways. he’s overrated, unless he hits 35 home runs in that humongous ball park.. good luck in your walk out year.

  45. Gina says:

How is it an epic fail by Omar? We didn’t have a shot in hell at getting him. Unless you were willing to give up most of our farm system + Pelfrey or Maine.

  46. kingman 26 says:

    I agree with Alex.

We were never going to trade our remaining top prospects for a one year rental, and even if we got the window to negotiate, giving Holliday a long-term, zillion dollar deal without seeing how he can hit in Citi Field would be nutty…..

  47. kingman 26 says:

It is not, of course….if you notice, whenever you see “DWrightUnclutch” underneath it follows something very, very silly……

  48. alex.242 says:

lol you gotta admit kingman: “DWrightUnclutch” is pretty funny.. but the guy only post negative stuff.. don’t mind him.. i’m sure he’s a front runner since 2006..

  49. kingman 26 says:

Funny you say that, because even though I think David Wright is awesome, and before this year, his “clutch” stats were all very good, I actually think that the nickname coined by another of our negative folks here “DRod” is pretty damn funny and I kind of like calling him that!!

  50. rustyjr says:

hey i find george bush funny – doesn’t mean i take him seriously though lol

  51. kingman 26 says:

Hey, that is a pretty good analogy!!
